K8TNeo - Lockup in Gigabit Boot Agent

As the subject says, I got some serious problems with booting my machine.
2 out of 3 boots, it locks up when coming to the message;
"Realtek RTL8110S/8169S Gigabit Boot Agent ...."
I can't be alone in experiencing this?
What are your solutions to this problem?
The only I can think of is a new bios (2.3), additional network card...
Thanks..

When you flasj a Bios you have to also go into Bios and reset everything. If you don't then things don't work as you are set to defaults. In this case the boot order defaults to boot from LASN which is what you are seeing. I assume that you know how to set up Bios's as you flashed yours.

  • Realtek Gigabit Boot Agent

    Hi
I have just upgraded the BIOS to V 1.7 and after going through and changing settings, the machine generally boots up fine, although it does lock up occassionally at teh "Scanning for IDE devices" and something about "Realtek Gigabit Boot Agent". I simply have to press restart and it boots up fine next time, but I would like to do what the Realtek thing bob is for. Is it to update the BIOS on the Ethernet device? I didn't get it with my previous BIOS v1.1.
If any of you learned people can help I would be gratefully appreciative.

...if you use the onboard LAN for your internet connection, leave it alone...you can confighure it to not show the message by pressing the keystroke combo to enter it, but it won't save any boot time...if you are using another network adapter or dial-up then you can disable it in Integrated Peripherals...

  • [Athlon64] K8T Neo Hangs at Gigabit Boot agent

Topic pretty much explains it all.  This morning I heard a long beep and jumped out of bed thinking my computer was overheating.  Pulled the plug and the beep continued. Turned out the beep was my alarm clock which was unplugged and was telling me the batteries were dying, but that's another story.  Anyway, I plugged the pc back in and hit the power button and now it won't boot.  It either gets to the Gigabit boot agent and hangs, or gets to the SATA Raid Bios Setting Utility, scans for serial drives, finds none, and hangs there.  I've reset the CMOS twice now, swapped harddrives around, and even swapped IDE ports around in every combo I can think of.  I currently can't even get into the BIOS setup.
After messing around for a long while it now gives me 3 long beeps and no video at all anymore.
Problem fixed.  Had to disconnect the cable for my LAN and that got me into the setup utillity so I could set up the boot sequence the way it used to be.

It happens to the best of us, glad it solved

  • Gigabit boot agent

Sorry, I do not want to irritate anyone with a stupid question, but what is the Gigabit boot agent that appears during start up used for?

The gigabit boot agent is a small piece of software in the BIOS, (on the k8T anyway) that allows you to boot your pc from the network.
If you have a dhcp server properly configured, you can give have it give your machine an IP address, and also tell it that there is a server on the network that has a boot image that it should load. You machine will then connect to that server, retrieve the boot image, and load it.
Most cards that have a boot agent use PXE, which is a Preboot eXecution Environment.
I have used netbooting in a few places that I have worked and it was very useful. I used it at a college to allow any computer connected to the network to be netbooted to a dos based ms-networking prompt,  so I could reimage the machine with ghost instead of having to carry around a network boot disk.
You could also use it for kiosks, or so that you could have machine with no local storage.
I was looking into using it to boot some pc's straight into a dos version of citrix, so that some old pc's wouldn't need hard drives at all.

  • MSI GE70 bigfoot boot agent message

    Hi dear everyone ,
I have a msi ge70 2oe , everything is fine with my gamebook but there is only 1 problem , i can not disable bigfoot boot agent message when startup it sound like not a big deal but it's really annyoing cause i dont want to wait a think that i dont really i tried to press " shift + f10 " and disabled it but it is not working so can anyone help me please.
    Thanks

I believe there's actually a setting in the computers BIOS about whether to load that ROM image or not during bootup. You should be able to disable within the BIOS (NOT the bigfoot BIOS).

    use this instead.
The problem lies in either the hdd or the motherboard connector for the hdd. So you will have figure which one is which.

  • Ultra 24 and Intel Boot Agent

I recently purchased a Sun Ultra 24, my first foray into the Intel + Solaris arena.
The machine has performed flawlessly with a number of x86 operating systems, and the BIOS has seemed rock-solid.
Yesterday, I decided that I would reduce the BIOS boot time by disabling the PXE Boot, by using the BIOS menu option to do so. Following that change, the various operating systems I've tried cannot enumerate or activate the e1000 NIC. I did attempt to re-enable the PIX option in the BIOS, although the IBA doesn't appear any longer unless I reset the defaults with ibautil from DOS. The defaults reset doesn't survive beyond a reboot (the process is: boot using CD containing DOS and the intel proboot utils, execute ibautil -all -defcfg, reboot.) At that point, the menu is present and everything is back to normal. If I again reboot, the IBA menu doesn't appear during POST/boot and I cannot get the e1000 to function an OS.
Thank you for your time, and any feedback you may be able to offer.
UPDATE: I went ahead and did something rather unorthodox: On a hunch, I invoked ibautil with the option to enable the boot menu, believing this would force invocation of the IBA and enumeration of the NIC. It does, and the NIC does display activity and link lights at the rear (which it previously wasn't doing following the disabling of IBA in the BIOS). At POST, the IBA does say that it cannot continue due to a corrupt configuration (which I can eliminate with -defcfg, even though defcfg doesn't "stick" beyond a reboot). So, the NIC is working, but I believe the root issue is in being able to access the IBA menu with the option enabled in the BIOS. The IBA menu apparently is set to disabled within the ctrl-s config menu, and with zero seconds wait, which I cannot access to change. As a result, the NIC doesn't initialize at POST, leaving it dead for all practical purposes.
If any of you know how to re-initialize the IBA ctrl-s properties so as to display ctrl-s normally without the volatile, non-lasting ibautil -defcfg, and without a BIOS update (Sun hasn't released one for this model, yet) I'd love to know how.
Thanks again, and hopefully this provides some insight into what to avoid when configuring the IBA and e1000 nic on this machine. Hopefully any answers will lead to the solution for those that have run into the issue.

I also have this problem, but I don't know how it happened. The machine came with Solaris 10 installed and the network interface worked fine. Then I wiped the machine and installed Solaris Express 01/08 and it worked fine. Then from the GRUB boot menu I booted to "Sun xVM Hipervisor" out of curiosity. It booted into Solaris Express, but the network was no longer available (not even listed in ifconfig -a). From that point onward this computer doesn't think it has a network card in it. I've reintalled the OS, tried Indiana builds, etc. The OS installers don't ask me network questions anymore, and people on the install-discuss (solaris) mailing list tell me that it means no network interface was detected.
From the BIOS's Advanced/Integrated Devices screen I see that "GbE Controller" is Enabled, and "GbE LAN Boot" is Enabled. When I try to access the Intel Management Engine Bios (CTRL-P at boot), it asks me for a password! I don't know what the password is, and it is not mentioned in the manual.
I don't like the idea of shipping the computer back because I'll just get an other one with the same problem. I guess it's time to call Sun and get some help.

  • Can't disable Bigfoot Boot Agent on GT60

Whenever I hit shift+f10 during POST to alter the BBA settings, they will stay if I restart the system, but will automatically revert to the default 3 second message if I power off the machine. This is really annoying!
A review of the GT70 on pcworld states the same issue.

    what's your current bios version?

  • Not able to boot to Windows XP all the time

My BIOS version is AMIBIOS Version 3.31a. After installing a new hard drive with a K8T Neo-FSR motherboard am I receiving the following error.
    PXE-M0F: No boot filename received
It keeps on doing the same error over and over again.
The BIOS does see the hard drive.
The boot order in the Realtek RTL8110S/8169S Gigabit Boot Agent configuration menu
is Always boot network first, then local devices.
When I change the boot order to ROM Disable I receive the following error.
    Boot Failure
Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device
    Press any key when ready
After changing the boot order to boot the devices ordered in BIOS setup it starts perfectly into Windows XP. Once I shut down and restart the computer the following message comes up.
    Boot Failure
Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device
    Press any key when ready
How can I get it to stop?

Do you ever boot from LAN? If not disable boot from LAN. When you change boot order do you simply set it to boot from drive with OS on it and restart or do you 'save changes and exit? Is your new HDD S-ATA 1.5 or 3.0? If 3.0 did you jumper to 1.5?

  • K8N Neo2-54G advice needed

This is my first attempt at building a pc so please excuse any incorrect terminology.
    AMD FX-55
    MSI K8N NEO2-54G
    ATI X800 XT PLATINUM EDITION
    2 X 512 CRUCIAL BALLISTIX DDR 4000
    2 X 160GB SAMSUNG SPINPOINT SATA HDD (plugged into SATA ports 3 & 4)
    ENERMAX NOISETAKER 600W
    PIONEER DVR-108 DVD-RW (IDE)
    SONY FDD
    LOGITECH ULTRA-X PS/2 keyboard
On initial boot the keyboard lights flash briefly and the keys won't respond (ie pressing delete to enter setup has no effect).  The diagnostic lights are all green except for the top-right which is red ('Initializing Floppy Drive Controller').  All fans are running correctly.
After about 5 minutes the CMOS setup page appears although the diagnostic lights remain the same ('Initializing Floppy Drive Controller').  At this point the keyboard keys function correctly and I can alter the CMOS settings (including enabling SATA ports 3 & 4 and disabling ports 1 & 2).  The primary boot device is set to CD-ROM and the secondary to Hard disk.  The CMOS recognises the CPU and RAM.
On saving and exiting the setup (with the Windows XP Pro CD in the DVD drive) the system reboots but once again the keys don't respond and the system seems to stop at the 'Detecting array ...' message.  At this stage the diagnostic lights are now all green except for the top left which is red ('Boot attempt').  Sometimes it remains frozen and on other occasions the CMOS set up page reappears after several minutes.
If I attempt to boot from 'power off' with the XP Pro CD in, I get a 'Detecting array ...' screen for about 5 minutes and then a 'No disk reserved for RAID use, RAID disabled' message.  At this point I am given the option to press Alt-F10 to enter  the 'Realtek Gigabit Boot Agent' but again the keyboard won't respond and so the system decides to reboot itself and freezes at the next 'Detecting array' message.
I realise that I'm probably making an incredibly basic error but would greatly appreciate any advice as to where I'm going wrong.
    Many thanks

I disconnected the DVD drive, hard drives and FDD as suggested, cleared the CMOS and booted.  I had no problem accessing the CMOS setup (using the key) although the 'Initializing Floppy Drive Controller' diagnostic lights remained.  The CPU and memory were detected correctly.
I then loaded the optimised defaults and rebooted, again with no problem.  I then connected the DVD drive and rebooted.  This was detected correctly and so I also added the FDD.  I manually selected the 1.44 3.5 FDD option and then saved and exited.  Throughout this process the diagnostic lights remained the same.
As soon as I tried to connect a hard drive via the SATA cable the system froze and wouldn't enter the CMOS setup.  The keyboard wouldn't work either.  I tried both drives together, one at a time, tried all four SATA ports in pairs and individually, swapped the SATA cables and had the drives both in and out of the case.  Still no joy.
I disconnected the SATA cables and rebooted and reached the CMOS setup with no problems, reconnected the cables & rebooted and it locked up immediately.
Throughout the entire process the diagnostic lights remained the same.
Any more advice would be most welcome.

  • BIOS flash resulting in bad game performance?

    Motherboard: K8N Neo2 Platinum
Yesterday I flashed my BIOS to version 1.C, because of problems when rebooting the computer from Windows (booting would get stuck at the Gigabit Boot Agent, until network cable was removed).  The flash was successful, however I noticed a great decrease in game performance after booting into Windows.  Games like WoW and F.E.A.R. Combat had their fps reduced to less then 30 fps, where 40-50 fps were not abnormal before the flash.
I talked to a few people about this and due to their advice I tried reinstalling the motherboard and graphics card drivers.  To no avail.  3DMark2001 benchmarks showed a score of 11000, where I got a score of 15000 when I tested my rig a few months ago.
This morning I completely formatted my Windows drive and reinstalled Windows, including all new drivers for motherboard, graphics card, you name it.  Still my 3DMark2001 score won't go beyond 11600.
I checked everything possible in BIOS and Windows:
    CPU settings are ok,
    memory settings are ok,
    harddisks are configured for UltraDMA5,
graphics card core and mem clocks are ok,
all possibly performance reducing services and programs are shut down.
I can't think of anything else reducing my computer's performance, but can't also think of the BIOS influencing this performance.
Image of new and old benchmark:
    http://www.sloefke.eu/f/benchmarks.jpg
Should I try reflashing the BIOS, and if so:
    a) to which version?
    b) is reinstalling of drivers really necessary?

    Nope.

I flashed the BIOS manually, if that's what you're asking.

I've same mobo like yours and used Bios 1C from Syar's.  Refer to my sig in order to flashed it. ALso troed to reset your BIOS by removing the CMOS battery and leave it for 10-30 min make sure you've removed the power cord as well as power connectors and load all the default setting before you need to reflashed it again. Gd luck
I don't fully understand this part of your reply.  Should I first remove the battery and then reflash the BIOS?  What's the difference between removing the battery and resetting the BIOS with the JBAT jumper?
And what are the modifications of the Syar BIOS compared to the MSI 1.C BIOS?  Will it resolve my problem?

  • Black screen on booting windows

Gday team, long time since i was here, but this one i'm not sure which path to take, and i thought you might e able to point me in the right direction
I reset CMOS yesterday with the jumper, as my ethernet keeps disappearing, and it seems to work, i decided to go the whole nine yards, and took the battery out, i have a CD drive thats playing up so i took it off line to, but on starting up, i get Windows loading and then the black screen, tried another card, still the same, some say chipset drivers, some say updating Bios, could taking the battery out mean i need to load a more recent BIOS ? And due to no screen, i cant see anything to help me out
Any body help me out here
    thanks
    norwegian

    Gday Maesus,
I am having i assume power problems, the computer shuts down when ever it wants,no error messages
my DVD drive just packed in as well
In all my reformats, i never deleted the first 8 meg partition, which i was just about to ask about ? As i use the onboard Realtek Gigabit Ethernet, which drops out unexpectedly now and then, a reset of the CMOS jumper gets it up and running again. This first 8 MB section i gather has the Realtek Boot Agent, i was thinking of nuking the drive, but i can't seem to find it on the M/B drivers, and Realtek say i need to by it, is there somewhere i can download it, or does it get detected fine if i just boot from Windows and install( i have only ever done a full clean format/install) with PCI ehternet cards
Warranty because the company i bought this off has 6 months left on it, and considering the bugs, might as well let them look at it
Hopefully i can get this sorted one way or the other
    Thanks

See if BIOS setup detect your HDD, also 'load BIOS default', then save and exit and see how its goes.
If its not detected by BIOS yes, seems to be faulty drive

  • Can't boot HDD. "PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM." Error

Hello, and thank you in advance for your help.
My Toshiba Satellite U840 is receiving the following error at startup:
    Check cable connection!
    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
I had a Hitachi HTS545050B9A300 (S1) Hard drive which no longer worked (DIsk was making a click, and S.M.A.R.T. said it was bad)
So far I have gotten into setup by holding f2 at startup. The boot tab reads:
    1. HDD/SSD (Seagate) ST500LT012-9WS142 (S1) (It's a brand new disk I bought)
    2. USB
    3. LAN Atheros Boot Agent
I have also tried disconnecting the battery and harddrive and then reconnecting them, it doesn't work. I've tried connecting to the internet directly with a cable and it gives me a DHCP error. At the beginnning, the HDD appeared on the list of hard drives to install Windows 7. It gave a "hardware error" at the end and it didn't let me install it. Then, it asked me to place a RAID 1 disk pressing Ctrl+I with a 30 GB hard drive, and now all I can see is that 30 GB hard drive but I can't even install it there.
I've tried with Hiren's disk. The mini Windows XP doesn't show the HDD. The linux distro does, but when I want to see the partitions, it gives an error on Linux on the whole screen with a bunch of words and it just stays there.

What is the full model and operating system?
    What are the Bios settings?
Are you using recovery media or a stand alone install of windows 7 ?
If you are changeing to windows 7 from windows 8 there are Bios changes that need to be done before it will let you boot and it will give you this error.
