K9 Platnium SLI problem (USB)

Hello all,  I have searched and found many results for my problem, I'm looking for a "one stop" fix if someone can help...
just built this system with the help of some folks over in "Off topic technical" and all went very well (specs in sig)  I am having just one little problem... USB......
If i have usb connected to the motherboard USB ports on the back the system will not boot, hangs at the MSI splash screen.  If I remove the two usb plugs from the back, after the boot I can do what ever I want and it is like normal, this just happens on boot up.  From reading some of the threads,, I have all the onboard usbs connected to something or the other, one to the D-bracket, and i have two usbs up front.  Nothing is in them but they are connected to the board.  Once the system is in windows, i can connect the two usbs i use, and go about my merry way, I even play MOH Airborne on hi settings with no chops or chips,,,smooth as can be.....  kinda of stumped here...... ???  I know someone is going to say "power supply" but aint 750 enough!?  I am thinking about doing the "remove all USB hubs and all references to usb in the control panel" thing that i read someplace here,  but wanted to get a take in this thread before I ventured any further.  OH,, i have the USB legacy [enabaled] in bios (read that in one of the thread also)
thanks for any help
Jake

Check the number of pins used between te front USB and the motherboard....you should only use 8 pins...not 9!
Also, try without the smartcard-reader, I have seen them giving troubles before.
Ok this is what I got, I removed the one wire from my USB header (of the 3 only one header had the extra wire) only Leaving 8 connected, result; no change.  the multi card reader is connected to usb1 header pins 1-3-5-7 (bottom row of pins) moved and connected to the top row of pins ( 2-4-6-8), results; no change.  Totally disconnected the multi card reader, results; boots like a champ.
Now what?  I like my multi card reader.  any other options to get everything working?  the only thing i can think of is use a hard wire and run it out the back of the case, and "dangle" it, and plug it in when i need it, but that seems so "wrong"....
thanks for the help thus far....

  • Problems with the Neo4 Platnium/SLI Mobo

    Hey all,
Well I just got my mobo up and running today and I have a few questions.
    1st. Why is my PCI-E only at x8 ? I have a 6600GT and I know it supports x16?!
2nd. Why every time I boot into windows, it tells me it found new ide controllers but when it tries to install it gives me errors. I try to install drivers from cd but I get the same error, I download drivers from their website but same problem. It only started happening after I installed the latest bios v3.7. I use the ide stuff for my cd rom
3rd. I read that is bad for memeory to run in 2T. When my system boots up it says something along the lines of Dual Channel 400 2T. I read that it should run in 1T but I have no idea where to change it. I have OCZ Premier Series ram (2x512)
That is all for now. Any help would be great.

  • HELP - K8N New4 Platnium SLI

I got my K8N New4 Platnium SLI back from RMA - looks used already, but that is another discussion.
Put the board back in and installed all coponents. Everthing is connected (see sig) and hit the power - A couple LED's flash and the back fan turns 1/8" - thats it.
I am sure it's been asked before - but is there a usual reason for this behaviour or will I have to start stripping the unit down to find an answer?
    Help guys, thanks.

    Mike,
All that is very odd, I would recommend removing all overclocks still you are stable.
    Take Care,
    Richard
Well, look at this. Not so much that my system was not stable, but a device managaner setting telling my Gige to wake. Why would this be a default?
So I have been on this issue since my last post. Originally, as I stated I thought the issue was resolved after I did a system restore, but nope, it came back -> computer would turn on 20 to 30 seconds after I SHUTDOWN.
DEVICEMANAGER/NETWORKADAPTERS/ (your specific adapter) /PROPERTIES/ADVANCED/WAKEUPCAPABILITIES. It was set to "Magic Packet and Pattern". I reset it to "None" and now my system shuts down and stays down!
Her is the internet link to the discussion about it that I found... one for my books for sure!
    Computer Turns On after SHUTDOWN
Just wanted to post this for reference.

  • K8N Neo 4 Platnium SLI mobo issues **DEAD**

My first K8N Neo 4 Platnium SLI mobo got RMA'ed due to the fan on the nvidia chip stopping. This replaced board is now getting RMA'ed as it just fried on me. No idea what is gone on it, but I had a local shop diagnose that it was the mobo.
So is anyone else having issues with the K8N Neo 4 Platnium SLI mobo? I've asked MSI RMA dept to replace it with a Diamond Plus mobo as the K8N Neo 4 Platnium SLI mobo is oviously crap.
Do they still make the K8N Neo 4 Platnium SLI mobo or is it now discontinued?

OK, I'm starting to understand this dual rail thingy.
Bass, did you mean THIS or THIS Powerstream?
Also, since I have your attention, what about this Enermax
I ask as it is cheaper.
Those OCZs are the same, just a different color.....
    Look at the spec's for the 520W, 33A @ 12V.
As for that Enermax, it's one of those Dual-rails ones....I would not go there.
The Enermax EG651-VE is way better, but beware, it doesn't have the SLI videocard connectors, so you may need special inbetween-cables.
If you planning to build an SLI system, better go for the OCZ Powerstream 520W, the blue one, as that one has the SLI connectors.
Other then that, they are both the same

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum: USB mouse works, other USB devices iffy or not at all.

I have a K9N2 SLI Platinum running now, and lately it's become rather flakey on me.  Windows Mobile device center cut out on me last month when I tried to update the phone software, which I guess should have been the first clue.  I notice that the flash drives I connect aren't showing up, and the new Ipod I bought last week doesn't show up at all, either.
    Symptoms include:
    1. When I connect my HTC Excalibur up, Windows 7 realizes this is a phone, and starts up or installs Windows Mobile Device Center for me.  However, midway through installing the actual device, it stops and tells me the device is disconnected.  The phone is plugged in, and I've been afraid to touch it during this process.  On rare occasions, the phone actually is detected and installed, somewhere in the next dozen connections it reverts back to the drawing board, though.
    2. I have a bunch of flash drives that never show up on the computer now.  At least one of them showed up in the past, and transferred files just fine.  When I plug them in, I don't get the new device connected noise, and they don't show up in the System screen.
    3. I've managed to completely kill the batteries of two separate Ipods.  (Which actually worked out for me when they let me upgrade the new nano to a new classic).  It doesn't detect that anything is attached to the USB line.  Doesn't matter if I hook it up in disk mode, run "the 5Rs" or what, these little buggers starve to death on the line.
    4. Throughout all of these situations, two devices work no matter which rear USB slots I hook them to: the Microsoft Mouse, and my HP PSC 2700 printer.  So long as I don't pull them out while the machine is running, I don't have to do anything special to get Windows 7 to find and use them.  Unplugging the printer will get the device disconnected noise, but does not free up any resources to detect anything else attached.
    5. The front two USB slots don't work at all.  I don't think they've ever worked for me, so I'll deal with that mess sometime later.  Turning the computer off, unplugging these, and restarting with just the 4 rear slots enabled does not help the problem.
    What I've tried so far:
    1. Reinstalling Windows 7 after formatting the partition.
    2. Reinstalling the Nvidia nforce drivers from Nvidia's site using my board/processor specs.
    3. Reinstalling the software that normally detects these devices: Itunes, Windows MDC, etc.
    4. I've attempted to uninstall the USB drivers, but as the mouse connects here, that's been forcing a hard restart instead of shutting Windows7 down as normal.  On restart, mouse is reinstalled but problem remains.
    5. I've tried disabling Legacy USB drivers in the BIOS. No dice.
    6. I can't get a BIOS flash to work from the Live Update tools, (perhaps for the better), and the USB sticks aren't working to flash from one of those.  (Granted I can still boot and I'm otherwise stable).
All I can think of is that maybe prior to reinstallation I pulled off something with CCleaner that I actually needed, but the reinstallation should have fixed that if it was a registry error.

I'm sorry, I need to be a bit clearer, apparently.  The devices on the list were not plugged in at the same time.  Instead, I decided to see which if any devices would work by plugging them in one at a time.  The printer was plugged in for all of them, as was the mouse, then I repeated the one at a time process with both the printer and the mouse unplugged to see if anything new happened.  Results were posted line by line on the list above.
Now then, I have managed to get my hands on an x86 version of Windows 7.  Surprise, surprise, it works.  Phone not only detects, but also installs.  When I plug in a Sandisk Cruiser, Windows 7 finds it, powers it up, installs drivers and assigns it a drive letter within about 5 seconds.  I haven't gotten around to installing the iTunes yet and getting the iPod running, but I suspect it'll work if everything else is showing up now.  Thus far, the only thing that hasn't worked when installed is the Logitec Gamepad, but then again I just plugged this one in to satisfy my curiousity.  There are probably some drivers I need if I want to actually play games with it.
While this seems like it would solve the issue, the problem remains that I bought the board so I could eventually upgrade the RAM well beyond the 2GB I have installed.  Since x86 seems to only go up to 3GB, that's going to kind of defeat my purpose there.  Also, I've only got 30 days on this install, then I'm back to square one where I have to either use my x64 license/disc to get a legal, crippled copy going, or reinstall another x86 build.  Pretty sure copy protection will start kicking in soon on that.
    Any Ideas?

  • K8N SLi Platinum USB keyboard boot issues

Hello, I have a K8N SLi Platinum connected via an Aten US221 USB switch (http://www.aten-usa.com/?product&cat=804&Item=US221) and a Kensington USB hub to a Logitech MX518 mouse and a Logitech multimedia pro keyboard. I use this to connect the same two input devices to two computers and toggle. Previously I used a keyboard to each, with a Dell PS/2 used on the MSI motherboard.
The problem is that the MSI motherboard fails to detect the keyboard every other boot or so. It doesn't matter if I unplug the Aten switch, the USB hub or even connect it directly to the USB root hub. The only thing that solves it to restart the MSI computer over and over until it decides to start working. And I need the keyboard since I have a bootloader (GRUB) that I select which OS to boot with. The switch and keyboard works without a hitch on an older Dell computer which is also connected in tandem.
Since I need both mouse and keyboard on a single wire I cannot use a USB-to-PS/2 connector. I've found several posts here which suggests this motherboard is buggy, if that's the case shouldn't MSI issue some sort of BIOS patch?
    Sincerely, Martin "xarragon" Persson

    Might work.
I don't like the inconsistency you describe: working sometimes and after a lot of reboots. Would you say your system parts, please. Troubleshooting this in your end must include finding a situation where it never works, and when it always work. For example, if you don't have the mouse connected at all, if you don't use the hub, etc.
Not saying motherboards can't be damaged, specially port end, but the hub thing is a more likely culprit.

  • MSI x99s SLI Plus USB 3.0 Issues

    Hi All,
Having issues with my MSI x99s SLI Plus - I recently purchased a Netgear A6210 (Network Adapter; supports USB 3.0); when plugging it into the USB 3.0 ports (I've tried all the USB 3.0 ports) on the back, the device goes into a constant disconnect/reconnect loop (not the network, the actual device, as if I'm physically removing and connecting it), sometimes 3-4 times, always at least once. It does eventually stop and then the device proceeds to work as normal, however, this does not happen on the USB 2.0 ports. I've tried to rule out the A6210 by plugging it into another computer (USB 3.0) and it works fine. I have all the latest drivers (the board is only 2 days old) for both the MOBO (latest BIOS v1.8) and A6210... its strange, anyone see anything like this?
    Specs:
    MSI x99s SLI Plus
    i7-5820k
    4GB Crucial Ballistix
    GTX 980

It sounds like an issue with the motherboard firmware in some way.
I would contact MSI directly about the issue.
    >>How to contact MSI.<<
As a side note, I looked on Netgear's forums, and it really appears that there is quite a bit of problems with the A6200 line of network adapters......

  • P7N2 SLI PROBLEMS

    Currently i have MSI P7N2 (790i ultra), G. Skill DDR3 4GB, intel Q8200 (same), GTX 260 (x2 sli same) and new RMA TX850.
with my new build, everything was fine for about a week then in opperation flashpoint 2 i would get random pauses in game for about 2 seconds and then the game would move really quickly to catch up, kind of like in high speed as if everything was waiting in teh pauses, my movement, shooting everything. this would be after 1-2 hours playing
Then in OF2 and Crysis i started to notice the textures would start flickering and sometimes apperaing higher off the ground than they should. this would happen after 5 minutes playing.
then my games and systme would crash, everything fine on desktop, youtube etc but in game i would get lock ups and crashes and now when i try to use my sytem in SLI all i get is colourful screens in game, not even the real graphics !
now i have tried this in windows 7 (RC), Windows XP. Same problem in both. i have ran each card by itself and both run completly fine with no problems at all, i have tried 182, 186, 190 and latest drivers. all same problems. i have tried multiple SLI bridge, 1 brdige alone, 2 bridges, swapped bridges. nothing works
i have had nothing but problems with this system building and im completly tired of rebuying parts and stuff breaking, RMA bla bla i hate it, i should have to RMA something brand new.
please help me with this problem. nothing in my system is overclocked, all stock. i use it purely for gaming, i am a gamer i play for a team i really need my system for practice and LAN. i have a lan at the end of the month.
please any help would be great. thanks
i would like to add i posted another thread about overclocking, this board cant have any setting changed without crashing before windows, if i change voltage, fsb (even up ONE !) it crashes.
the audio card on this board pops and clicks all day long and makes the sound go "tin" like in game and ventrillo, even transmits my voice to sound horrible, then switches back to being normal.
problem after problem on my frist msi product so im asking for some serious advice becuase i am reallyREALLY starting to regret this product

Actually, most of the time when you see artifacts on the screen during gameplays or even normal operations, the problem is usually the graphics card either being overheated or having some internal core issues. Do test out with another graphics card.

  • X58 Platnium SLI bios and ram issues

I successfully updated the bios from v3.0 to v3.1 using the MSI HQ USB BIOS Flash Tool/Utility. Greenpower confirmed it.
Unfortunately, the QPI frequency dropped from 6.4GT to 4.8GT. Using the 3.0 bios I was able to change the QPI frequency between AUTO, 4.8GT and 6.4GT. Now using bios v3.1, I can only change between AUTO and 4.8GT.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
My other problem is that my Memory is running at PC3 - 8500 (1066Mhz) instead of PC3-10666 (1333MHz)
I have 3 - 1GB sticks of RAM in triple channel mode. The specs on the ram are in the link below.

As far as I can see, resetting the power manager on this model of iMac involves resetting the SMC, which is unplugging all cables for 15 seconds, plugging back in and powering up. Tried that too, same result. In terms of third party software, nothing. Clean Leopard install is the lot.

  • Error 36 and External Drive File Copy Problem & USB Connections

In attempting to copy a folder with some 200G+ of files from my iMAC, with OSX 10.6.7, to an external portable WD 1Tb HD, newly formatted to HFS+ (journaled), and connected to the iMAC via a USB cable to the USB port on the iMAC keyboard, I kept getting an error message that Finder could not complete the operation as some data couild not be read or written and transfered, and gave the "Error Code -36". After some searching ont he internet for this error code I came across a host forums discussiong the error code BUT all referred to it being the result of MAC OS hidden "dot-underscore" companioned files being created when the MAC OS X file system copies or moves files to a FAT16 or FAT32 volume. This was not the situaion in my case a both drives were OS X formatted HFS+. Eventually I came across a very vague reference to the error also occuring when the cable connection with the external HD was not solid. I reconnected my external HD and attempted the file transfer again - with the same result. Eventually I decided to plug the external HD into a USB pot on the back of the iMA itself, rather than the keyboard set. Sure enough the error issue disappeared - the transfer successfully completed.
So my question relates to the "usb connection" challenge with iMAC. the iMAC has only 4 USB ports on the back directly. I did have two desktop external HDs plugged into 2 of these USB ports at the back of the iMAC, as well as a WACOM pad device into the 3rd, and an EPSON 3880 printer into the 4th, and so was forced to employ the ports ont he keyboard for portable HD. So - what's the answer in a situation where the 4 are insufficient and it would appear that the keyboard ports seemed to be unpowered?? Any suggestions?

It's actually a Time Machine backup drive which is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I wish I'd copied the exact error message.
I believe it was something to the effect of "Error 36: The file could not be copied because some of the date could be be read/written" or something along those lines. Next time it comes up I'll copy it. I have Drive Genius running with DrivePulse, but it doesn't ever seem to start.
My biggest concern is that this is a sign that the drive is failing. When backing up, it also slows, or stops midway through and just hangs there. Though I haven't done a lot of extensive testing on that because if the drive is failing, I don't want to speed that process up any more.
To add to the complication, there is a second external drive which Time Machine is also backing up for me. There is one particular file, the Virtual Machine file, I was trying to get off the other external drive and it produced the same problem. That's when I went into Time Machine to try and retrieve the file that way and it did the same thing. The other external drive is making some sounds, but it doesn't sound like a distinct clicking, more like a more pronounced version of the normal constipated hard-drive sound. The Time Machine drive, isn't making any obviously strange sounds at all.
So, I can't tell whether the drives are failing or if it could actually be that particular file itself causing some strange problems.

I did this years ago when I had a PM6500 running 8.6 & added a USB PCI card, but know I didn't have the problem you are having.
When I downloaded from the link you provided, I got this file USBCard_Support1.4.1.smi.bin. After using Stuffit Expander, I got this file +USB Card Support 1.4.1.smi+, which is the installer. I don't have a Mac running 8.6, so I can't try the install.
Suggest you do this. Put the smi.bin file in a folder on your desktop & then uncompress using Stuffit. This will yeild the .sim file. Then double click the .sim file. Did you get the message "+Please insert the disc: USB Adapter Card Support+" when you double clicked the .sim file? Or some other file?
When you downloaded the smi.bin file did you use a Mac or a PC & then put on a Zip disc? What computer did you use to uncompress to get the .sim file?
