K9A Platinum and POST Problems

Alright... here's the deal. I am building a brand new machine. I got a relative nice case and 650W PSU with dual fans. GOt 2GB of Corsair XMS DDR2 675 Memory (Matched Pair). I also bought an AMD X2 AM2 4600 and a Zalman CNPS9500 for AM2 Fan. My video Card is a Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro. When I power up all fans, Zalman, and GPU Fan run but I get no video as well as no POST Beeps at all. I have done the following below.
1. Used another older Video Card that verified in my existing machine works - no change
2. Changed from top X16 GPU Slot to second - no change
3. Reseated memory, tried one at a time and verified they were in DIMMS 1 and 3 for Dual Channel - No Change
4. Not running Crossfire but plugged in Power Outlet with that - no change
5. Removed cabling to Front USB and Sound - no change
6. Removed HDD and CD Combo Drive from equation - no change
7. Reset BIOS Jumper - no change
8. Reset CMOS Battery - no change
I ordered a POST Card from eBay to help diagnose the problem as I do not have spare board, proc, or mem that are AM2 or DDR2 compatable. I also sent in tech request form to MSI.
I am not quite sure what to do or where to go from here. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
P.S. I used Anti-static wrist guard while installing all components. Not that that is 100% full proof but it is good.

Remove the board from the case and try it on a peice of cardboard. This makes sure you aren't touching some contact point to the case and grounding out something critical.
Try just the hardware to absolutly need to post. Use one stick of RAM
Do a Bios Reset.

  • K9A Platinum and Sata Harddrive

    Hi,
I recently upgraded from a K8n to a K9A Platinum and unfortunately my SATA drives no longer show up in the "safely remove hardware" icon in the taskbar.
I thought this might be a Windows problem with old boarddrivers and all, so i did a clean reinstall. Still not there. (In the disk policies tab under the drives property the  "write caching and safe removal" is grayed out and set to "optimise for performance", the only thing can select is "enable write caching on the disk". I have no idea if this makes any difference, I just thought I'd mention it!)
Does anyone know how I could get the Sata drives to show up in the taskbar again??
I mostly found people wanting to get rid of the Sata drives in the taskbar, so call me weird! I want them back!!!
    Thanks for your help!

Yea, that's what i gather from all the post on the internet, I'm just not happy with what i have!
Is there anyone out there who can tell me why my "write caching and safe removal" policies under the harddrive properties is grayed out??
    Thanks!!

because those options are valid for removable storages only.

  • K9a platinum and ocz memory cas 4-5-4-15

    Hi ,
I need help and i need it fast
I have k9a platinum and i want to buy this memory:
    OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800, 4-5-4-15,
Is it compatible with my mobo and do u have opinion about this ram?
    Thanx

Well my OCZ RAM which is meant to run @ 800MHz 4-4-4-15 timings. Runs very fine @ 800MHz w/ 4-4-4-10. 4-4-4-10 works up until about 870MHz.
OCZ seem to state their timings lower then the RAM sticks can actually cope for some reason.
I'm pretty sure it'll work, but contact OCZ for a correct answer.

  • K9A platinum and RX3870/3850 Series Graphics Card

RX3870/3850 Series Graphics Card are capable of CrossFireX, K9A Platinum have just CrossFire. I plan too later upgrade to K9APlatinum plus that suld support ADM Spider achritecture. Question is if I will buy in this time two pcs RX3870 will they run at K9A Platinum CrossFire or isn't supported ? Thanks for answer I bought full HD resolution LCD and my present x1950 is not enought for this res. so I need to upgrade. Thanks

I'm quite happy I have so fast responce. It's very hard to find info about that. I learned to trust people at this forum beucase they help me to solve my problem with 4GB RAM. Nothing against you personally but did you seens this somwhere running or some test. Two pcs of H3870 will be quite expensive and I don't want to have than one pcs lie at shelf. Thanks

Well, from what I understood in your post you want to crossfire two 3870 in a K9A Platinum. That's possible because it is a crossfire board and running two 3870 is just normal crossfire.
Spider or crossfire X is the able to run three or four vgas in triple/quad crossfire. That's of course not supported by K9A Plat. You would need a K9A2 Platinum which supports Crossfire X and has the necessary four PCIE Graphic slots.

  • MSI K9A Platinum and VIA drivers issue? XP 0x0000007B stop error.

I get a Windows Stop error when trying to boot into Windows XP with new components. The SATA hard drive (and Windows XP installation) is from the old computer.
    The new computer components are:
MB: MSI K9A Platinum, chipset: RD580 (North Bridge), SB600 (South Bridge)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 5600+, boxed (the cooler and fan came with the CPU).
    Video: MSI Radeon 1950 XTX
The old (and working) computer setup is:
    OS: XP Professional
    MB: Abit AV8-3rd Eye, chipset: VIA K8T800Pro + VT8237
    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
    Video: Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro All-in-Wonder, videodriver: atidvag.dll version 6.14.10.6542
HD: Maxtor 6B200M0 SCSI Disk Device
    BIOS: Phoenix 6.00PG 20.04.2005
System drivers with "via" in the name: VIAAGP1.SYS, viaide.sys, viasride.sys
VIA 4in1 (Hyperion) version: 4.55 (that can be found at HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Via4in1Driver).
VIA 2.20e SATA/RAID driver was used when installing this computer setup.
    The precise stop error is:
    0x0000007B (0xba4c3528, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
From many sites I have gathered that the error is related to Windows XP not being able to access a critical system drive. Most probably the SATA hard drive issue.
The problem probably is the VIA drivers of the old motherboard and/or the SATA driver.
First I should mention, that MSI K9A Platinum does not have a hard disk SATA driver. If it does, I have been unable to find one. Certainly no such floppy disk included, and no such driver in the MSI's Web page for this motherboard.
Second important point: I never used RAID. I did use VIA 2.20e SATA/RAID driver disk when installing Windows XP to the old computer.
Strange that the hard drive model is reported as a "SCSI Disk Device". It's not a SCSI drive however: it's a SATA disk.
I have tried to uninstal the motherboard chipset drivers (Hyperion v4.55), but there seems to be a bug here: the drivers should be uninstalled using the installation program, and select the uninstall option. However, I do not get the uninstallation option to choose at all! Yes, I'm using the normal installation mode, not the quick installation (although tried that, too). The Hyperion setup program just installs, and asks to reboot the computer. After rebooting and trying again, it still does not offer me an uninstallation choise.
I know how to install hard drive VIA SATA driver, but I have no idea how to uninstall it. And I'm afraid to do that without certainty that it IS the solution, since I could not access the hard drive any more in the old computer setup (and return to read this forum). Also, I do not have a floppy drive any more. Anyone know if there is an issue with K9A and XP having VIA SATA driver installed?
When I tried the new computer setup, I first tried the simplest possible hardware combination: there were no CD/DVD-drives, no (parallel)IDE hard drives, and no PCI cards, except the MSI video adapter.
My BIOS Setup experiments. None of these helped: got the same stop error each time.
    1) I didn't much touch the BIOS setting first. Just tried to boot with the settings BIOS came with.
    2) Next I disabled the integrated audio, LAN and IEE1394 devices and floppy drive and disabled all other choises except the SATA drive as a boot device.
    3) Next I tried with the fail-safe BIOS defaults.
    4) Cleared CMOS.
    5) Changed OnChip SATA type from Native IDE to Legacy IDE. (Only one boot attempt with the setting as Legacy.)
    6) Disabled PCI IDE BusMaster.
    7) Never touched anything in the Cell Menu: so the settings are in minimum.
A step I have taken after the last attempt: run Windows XP hard drive error-checking tool to every logical drive with the fix option selected, and the system drive also with scan the bad sectors option selected.
    My plans next are:
    1) to install a newer Hyperion driver. If that would correct the no-unistallation-choice-bug,
    2) to disable USB-devices in the BIOS (desperate),
    3) to choose the Windows general video display driver (although I seriously doubt this is a display driver problem!).
    4) to uninstall the Anti-Virus software (Avira Antivir).
I've read a numerous Web pages so far about the 0x0000007B stop error. Here are some links:

    Stop 0x0000007B or INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
This Stop message, also known as Stop 0x7B, indicates that Windows XP Professional lost access to the system volume or boot volume during the startup process. This error always occurs while the system is starting and is often caused by one of the following:
        * Hardware problems
        * Corrupted or incompatible storage drivers
        * File system problems
        * Boot sector viruses
        * Outdated firmware
During I/O system initialization, this error can occur when:
        * The controller or driver for the startup device (typically the hard disk) failed to initialize the necessary hardware.
        * File system initialization failed because the system did not recognize the data on the boot device.

You receive a Stop 0x0000007B error after you move the Windows XP system disk to another computer
    SYMPTOMS
After you move the Microsoft Windows XP system (boot) disk to a backup computer, you may receive the following Stop error when you try to start the Windows XP-based backup computer:
    STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF741B84C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
    CAUSE
This error may occur if the registry entries and the drivers for the mass storage controller hardware in the backup computer are not installed in Windows XP.
    RESOLUTION
To resolve this error, use the same hardware for the backup computer.
Heh, heh! Very nice Microsoft, but I plan to update my computer, so I NEED to use different components

    Device Driver Issues
You may receive a "Stop 0x0000007B" error message in the following scenarios:
    •   A device driver that the computer boot controller needs is not configured to start during the startup process.
    •   A device driver that the computer boot controller needs is corrupted.
    •   Information in the Windows XP registry (information related to how the device drivers load during startup) is corrupted.
    Hardware Issues
You may receive a "Stop 0x0000007B" error message if there is a resource conflict between the boot controller and another controller or between SCSI devices. You may also receive this Stop error message if drive translation is not being performed or if drive translation was changed. To troubleshoot this issue:
    1.   If an IRQ or I/O port address conflict exists between the boot controller and another controller, Windows XP either stops responding (hangs) or displays a "Stop 0x0000007B" error message. If you recently added new hardware, remove the new hardware or reconfigure it so that it does not conflict with the resources of any other installed controllers.
    2.   If you are using a SCSI hard disk, check the SCSI chain for correct termination. Remove any unused SCSI devices or make sure that each SCSI ID is unique.
    3.   Make sure that drive translation is turned on (if it is required) and that it has not been changed. For example, if you recently switched controllers, this issue may occur. SYMPTOMS
When you start your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer after you replace the motherboard on the computer, you may receive a Stop error message that is similar to the following:
    STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE
    CAUSE
This issue may occur if the new motherboard contains an embedded IDE controller that has a different chipset than the original motherboard.
    RESOLUTION
Method 1: Perform an in-place upgrade of Windows XP [<- That means repair installation of Windows XP]
    •   Do not use a repair or in-place upgrade if you suspect disk problems.
Method 2: Repartition and format your hard disk and reinstall Windows XP

Alright I got the situation over.

I did try all all the above, and none of them helped.
And by the way: after installing the new Hyperion (VIA chipset drivers), I was finally able to also uninstall. It also uninstalled the IDE SATA (I think) and PATA drivers.
But what I had to do, was to make a REPAIR installation of Windows XP.
So, I was wondering now afterwards: this is really, really silly. Why the hell we need to re-install Windows if we move the SYSTEM SATA drive to another computer? We don't have similar problem with parallel IDE drives. Whom should we thank here??
The issue is to insert the driver files and the information of the ide drivers Windows should use with the next boot. How can it be this difficult?
    What you basically need is..
    - the information about the new chipset's PCIIDE.SYS/[VENDOR_PROVIDED_FILE].SYS and ATAPIIDE.SYS inserted into the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSetXXX\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase
    - and the vendor's IDE drivers to the %SYSTEMROOT%/System32/drivers folder.
Maybe something else, I don't know. But the problem was, Windows didn't know how, or what drivers to use. That can't be so big problem you need to install the whole OS anew!

  • K9A Platinum and 4GB DDR2-800

I'm a major MSI fan and have been for a long time. My computers (even my customer's) are MSI boards.
Recently, I upgraded my motherboard, ram and processor to the new AM2 core (ok, not really new, but w/e). I have the following items:
    MSI K9A Platinum
    4GB DDR2 800 (2x2GB) G.Skill 5-5-5-15
    Athlon X2 5200+ Windsor 65w w/2x1MB cache
    2x ATI Radeon x1650 256 DDR2 (Crossfire'd)
    1x 200GB SATA2
    1x 300GB SATA2
    2x 500GB SATA2
    My previous system had:
    MSI K8N Neo-4F
    4x 1GB Kingston DDR 400
    Athlon X2 4800+
    Ok. So heres my problem:
I installed each 2GB stick into slot 1 to verify they work and I got all 2GB. Shut down and installed each 2GB at each channel (DIMM1 and DIMM3) and BIOS reports 2544MB total. I look in BIOS and it says Physical Memory = 4096MB, Usable Memory = 2544MB. (This is before I even installed windows.) So, I tried to see if windows would report differently and after installing, it reported the same 2.48GB of ram. Now I know that Windows 32-bit can only go up to 3.2GB and I have no problem with that. My previous setup reported all 4GB of ram... so whats different about this board that it doesn't use all the memory available?
If this is an issue with the Processor, then let me know. I paid for 4GB, not 2.5GB. I expected at most 3.2GB.
And no. I won't go Vista. And Windows x64 has little to no support for a lot of what I do/have. So I won't use it either.
Thanks for your help in advance.

    @ BOSSKILLER:
I've done the single and dual vga test. I even placed the ram in single channel mode and it did the same.
    @ Bas:
Its default. I'll paste it here.

  • New K9A Platinum no POST

    Hi folks
Have bought some shiney new kit, but cannot get it posting, have trawled the forums for a solution to this issue but none found, so any help appreciated:
    New K9A platinum V1.0
    New AM2 X2 5600
    New TWIN2X2048-6400C4 (4-4-4-12 800MHz)
    New Sapphire 2900XT
    New Hiper Type-M 730W (HPU-4M730-SK)
I dont have any other kit connected, but cannot get a POST, the D-Bracket loops with the following leds status:
    1 red 2 red 3 red 4 red
    1 green 2 red 3 red 4 red
    1 red 2 green 3 red 4 red
    1 green 2 green 3 red 3 red
doesnt get any further and loops back to the first state
    Have tried the following:
removed power cabled - grounded, reset bios (jbat1)
1 ram stick in all slots, 2 ram in all combinations of slots
    swapped psu
    reseated cpu
    removed all ram
tested gfx - working in other system
tested psu - powers other system
    Still to:
test cpu & ram (but need to drop into retailer tomorrow)
Any suggestions appreciated but dont think I've missed anything...?

Many thanks for the suggestions but all to no avail.
Took the board back to retailer who posted sucessfully posted using some 667mhz value ram, then stepped up the timings to my shiney new Twinx sticks. Seems this is a reg occurrence of 800mhz ram not posting for the initial startup and some lower speed being required to do the job, so now i'm armed with my £8 jump stater stick, i shouldn't have any further issues when i trip the board o/c. Seem to remember this being an issue in the past with other boards, but didnt consider it as an issue.
Ho-hum all is well and peace has returned to our house once more.

  • K9A Platinum and DualCoreCenter

Asi there anyone who is able to run this SW on Vista x64 Ultimate on K9A Platinum? I had downloaded version 2.0.1.3. Installed and trying to get it working. At this forum in section of Intel based MB I found it work when .NET 3.0 is installed, so I enabled funcionality of .NET 3.0 in Vistas and also turn of WMI over SNMP. I still have same error, but now it take longer time to recieve this error. No application screen appear just error message after some time (20 sec.) Program CoreCell MFC Application stopped working.

    Why bother?
There are far better ways of controlling the board.
E.g. fan speed, just enable smartfan in the BIOS and never look at it again.
As for C&Q just enable minimal energy in Vista and be done with it too.
    Anything else?

  • K9A platinum and USB power.

So, This Christmas I decided to give my HTPC a M-play 202 plus as a little nice extra feature.
It is a Display module with IR-receiver and remote, and it has the nice feature of Remote power-on. This of course achieved by routing the power-switch cable through it.
But, this of course requires that the M-play 202 has operating power in itself, through USB.
Now, I have 10 computers at home, including a few other MSI-boards, and while some of them do not by default provide USB-power when switched off, all of them either have BIOS-settings or a Motherboard jumperswitch for this. The K9A platinum has neither. The other motherboards that does not show settings for this all have power on USB as default.
So, What am I missing? Where is my USB-power when the computer are switched off?
I can solve this by changing the M-play 202 plus USB-cable from internal type to an external and simply route it through an powered USB2 hub. But this is a very ugly solution.
Anyway, just writing this in hopes that there is something obvious I am missing here that will solve this.
    Best Regards
    Bo Eriksson

I have confirmed that other uses on CNN have same problems with firefox.
Problem doesn't occur when using I.E.8

  • P35 Platinum and eSata problem

I recently bought a WD My Book Premium ES 500GB and when i try to connect it via eSata cable, it doesn't work.My system can't recognize the drive, it doesn't show up in BIOS screen where HDD's are. I tried 2 different eSata cables but nothing.Via USB2 connection it works fine.
My system Specs are: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600,MSI P35 Platinum Mobo with latest BIOS update 1.1, 2GB RAM DDR2, Asus X1950XT VGA,Tagan 500W PSU.
I tried both eSata ports at the Back Panel of my motherboard but none worked with My Book.
Is there a problem with My Book? or is a compatibility issue?

Make sure you have set the switch or whatever your external drive has, to E-Sata mode.  I'm sure you probably already did that but just sayin!
I have a different board AND different external drive but after playing with my setup for a whole day trying to get the esata to work, it finally dawned on me that I had not set the switch from  USB to Esata (no wisecracks please
As soon as I did the switch, the Esata started working just fine.

  • K9A Platinum cold boot problems + Other stuff

      Hi lads,
Have a few things to ask about the K9A
First the cold boot issue. If the machine is fully powered off for a while and i boot it, it seems to loop at the point where it powers the IDE drives over and over again. This is all before display initializes If i power it off and back on again it will then boot fine. Sometimes i even get an error about overclocking failure even though i'm not OC'n
Second : Anyone else with a K9A. Do the Sata controllers in XP show up as using drivers from 2001? ie. XP drivers. Even after installing chipset drivers.
They just come up as 2 primary and 2 secondary controllers. I'd have expected these to at least have some ATI referance.
Third : USB problems in XP. External drives cause the machine to hard lock, but using a belkin USB card, there are no issues at all. Very annoying
    Machine specs are
    AM2 5600
    2gb of Corsair PC6400
    Corsair 620w
    6800 PCI-E
    4 SATA HDD's
    2x DVD IDE Drives
X-Fi (have tried onboard audio aswell)
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Think Bas meant the drivers for the motherboard, not the hard disks. Mostly in America, a drive is a hard disk, while in Europe a driver is a software program for a particular device, for example the network card.
    yup i know that
The soutbridbge drivers are installed. lastest version. old versions, same problems

    Hi all,
Ok so I said I'd report back once all working and here i am (touches wood  )
So my system is now Phenom less, I'm a bit gutted it's going back for RMA for refund. I have in the mean time replaced it with an x2 5000+ BE.
So just a recap on my spec
    K9a2 Platinum
    x2 5000+ BE Running stock 2.6Ghz
    8GB OCZ DDR2 800 Platinum
    2 x 3870x2 in crossfire X mode.
    Windows Vista x64 OEM
This OS now installed no issues no BSOD for secondary clock interrupt. But i did have issues installing it on the Promise raid array. Though it was the old more than 2GB ram thing so did the install with one stick and then Patch vista install the other 6GB but no still got system rebooting after the progress bar 9 times out of 10.
So i have the HDDs on the standard SB600 sata ports as individual drives, installed x64 all 8GB still installed. Not knowing yet if it was driver related I let vista install all the drivers, the only other driver my system needed were the cat 8.3s and I only installed the graphics driver and CCC not the IDE or north bridge filter as the system is using vistas default drivers.
I have installed all updates and everything seems rock solid. (touches more wood!!) I have spent the last week relentlessly trying to get this OS installed,  but hey I learnt a few things along the way..
    Paul
But now it is and I have my 8GB and crossfire X I'm happy and when the good Phenoms arrive I'll get one but I'll read all the reviews on the web first....
    Hi,
Right then resurecting an oldish thread, I have just purchased a Phenom 9750 and installed with the new 1.4 bios, and all is well. The same Vista x64 install is rock solid and damn quick now.
Buy the B3 Phenoms with confidence they (AMD) have pulled back some ground and in my case some confidence.
