K9A Platinum doesn't run 3D Apps

Ok, first than all.. Thnx 4 ur help.
This is my trouble:
Any time that I start a 3D App or activate the Windows Aero, my PC hangs up. Windows Basic and 2D apps runs just fine.This is my system:
AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+
4 GB RAM DDR2 800Mhz (2 VDATA and 2 Kingston Value)
Windows Vista Business 32Bits
MSI K9A Platinum Bios Ver. 1.8
1x PowerColor ATI x1600 Pro 512
1x PowerColor ATI x1650 Pro 512 (both in xfire mode)
1xHDD 160 Seagate SATAII
1xHDD 320 WesternDigital SATAII
1x DVD+/-RW LG H42N 18x
1x DVD+/-RW LiteON 20x
Power Supply: Cooler Master eXtremePower 550W
I had tried this:
1. Punt only the x1650 (new, I bought it 1 week ago), the system crash.
2. Reinstall Windows (yesterday), the system crash.
3. I had a Generic 500W power supply and I change it for the cooler master 2 days ago. No luck
4. Take out the memorys and put newones, no luck
Also, I had some problems installing Windows and have de SATA in AHCI mode, the installation time was around 3 hours, and the first reboot never happen, because the windows loading bar was showed around 4 hours and nothing. When I change it (the SATA config) to Native IDE the system starts normally. Could be a HDD Issue all of this trouble?

Yes, I use it... also, sometimes when I restart the PC, I get a message from the Bios Post that says somenthing like "The overclocking config was caused an error, the default parameters has been stablished" or something like that... and I had never made a Overclock to this PC.
2. Do a memory check whit Memtest86
I had already done, don't get any error.
3. Does it work in XP?

Well, like this one is the best that I can get from less than 60 USD, I don't have tried other one because a better PSU here (Guadalajara, MX) are more than 120USD... sooo is too expensive for me at the time... but acording to my sys spechs this one has to be enought... or not?

Well, something like I was noted in my search, is that in the MSI Miami Forum, all the other guys that have problems whit the same mainboard have installed an Athlon 6400+ "Black Edition" or an 6000+.... I was thinking that probably the MB doesn't have full support of the 125W procesors?... I think on this because in other post around here said that the K9A2 Platinum doesn't support them...

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
Next try:

Problem:
1. I bought the Hardcover Package (Box) Logic Pro 6 (Power PC Software) years ago
2. Then I bought the Upgrade to Logic Pro 7 (still got this Upgrade CD)
3. When I try to re-install the Logic Pro 7 now from the Upgrade CD > it says something like "No Power PC software running on Max OS X (Mountain Lion)"
Some suggestions:
Your installer is most likely a PowerPC app which won't work in Lion or Mountain Lion.
If you have an existing working setup of Logic 7.x on your drive, that should work, but only if it's the later Intel-compatible version. I have Logic 7.2.1 working just fine in Lion.
Do you maybe have a partition or boot drive that still has Snow Leopard or earlier? You could try re-installing on there, though it could be a big task finding all the related files to copy across.

What model iPod do you have? A 2G only can go to 4.2.1. The 3G and 4G can go to the latest. 4.3.3. Identify your iPod here:

Automator App doesn't run from doc

I built the "Quit All" automator app to close all running apps. Basically, it just uses the automator "Quit All Applications" action. The app works fine when run out of the applications folder or the desktop but, when in the dock, it does not run.
The same app works fine out of the dock in SL 10.6.8 and Lion 10.7.4 but not ML 10.8.0 or ML 10.8.1. I have been using it with no problems since Lion was released. I have rebuilt it using the ML Auomator but still no joy.
It's no big deal, but is there something I am missing ?

Perhaps you should check the Console logs to find out what's going on. One thing that I would examine is that if you run the app in the Dock, then it cannot quit the Dock hence the app fails to properly run. Just a thought.

Help with GeForce 8400 GS on K9A Platinum

Hello,
I changed my video card to PNY GeForce 8400 GS, the machine boots up fine but doesn't look like the video card is being recognized properly. I get only 800x600 and the colors are all messed up. In Device Manager, when I click on the video card it says "Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device. ... (Code 35)". I have the latest drivers from NVIDIA, I just updated my BIOS to the latest version (1.9), but still the same problem.

Sounds like there could be a conflict with the old driver fragments from the X1900 GT. Uninstall all graphics drivers, run >>Driver Sweeper<< and this time install the graphics drivers supplied by MSI.

Overclocking K9A Platinum

I was wondering if there are any overclockers who have gotten a K9A Platinum with a 5200+ Windsor (2.6GHz) to run over 3.3 GHz?
I'm pretty experienced as an overclocker and I have a liquid cooling system. I can't cross the 3.3 Gig threshold to save my life. I'm not talking instability..I post, all looks good but then it doesn't even bother to boot to Windows. I only get as far as 3.27 GHz and it is rock solid at around 40C under load. It just seems odd to me that my overclock would stop so abruptly at 3.3

I'm running 252 X 13 with voltage at 1.350 + 20%. I have my memory base at 667 with an adjusted freq of like 830 or in that area. The only HT link speed setting on my board is "Standard" or "For Overclocking", whatever that means. I've tried lowering my divider to 12 and all kinds of other things. In every case, I can't get to 3.30 GHz.
I'm considering lowering the proc freq so I can get more out of my memory by starting at 800 and trying to reach a balance of max memory freq along with a lower overclock. I guess the question is; which will benefit me more: A maxed out proc with a lower memory freq? or ,a lower proc overclock with maxed out memory?

K9A Platinum RAID - Be careful if you're considering this MB

Unbeknownst to me when I purchased this board to replace my ASUS P4S8X which had a Promise FastTrak 376 SATA RAID controller, when you create a mirrorset on the K9A Platinum you *cannot* preserve data. In my wildest dreams I didn't think that would be that way so I never thought to ask before I bought it. A RAID controller that can't preserve that data on one of its members?? Mind boggling to say the least.
Yes folks and it's true, confirmed by MSI support:
"ATI Raid Controller does not support this feature which is the chipset limitation which you will need to create the raid array and have a fresh install."
That's real nice eh? Completely re-install everything from scratch? <<Removed>> I just did that a week and an a half ago when I lost the MBR after a failed disk and Windoze fixmbr clobbered the partition table. That took 16 hours not including the Windoze install time. Don't want to do that again.
Plan B: Boot a knoppix CD and use dd_rescue to duplicate the disks then create the mirrorset, sync them and cross my fingers.
But that's only the half of it. In playing around with changing the IDE setting from Native IDE to raid, XP blue screens after the Logo with a 7b error. Haven't looked into that yet but I suspect it's because it doesn't have the drivers for the now raid controller. I'll worry about that once I have a sync'd mirrorset created.
When the IDE chipset is set to RAID in the BOIS I tried booting Windoze install disk and adding in the drivers for the now RAID chipset, it fails every time. I think I'm using the right drivers, need to confirm that, ahci8086, but every time it tries to load the driver it tells me that ahci8086.sys is corrupt. I've downloaded it numerous times with the same result. Same thing with the one off the included CD. The ahci8086.sys file is dated 5/18/2006 and I've got the latest which is dated 7/27/2006 which I don't think I tried yet but plan too. If I'm using the wrong driver for when the IDE BOIS is in RAID mode, please let me know but that's what is delivered in the ATI SB600 IDE RAID download so I assume that would be correct. Or maybe I'm supposed to be using one of the Silicon Image driver sets, I couldn't find any information anywhere on what is the correct driver.

I got censored?!?! I don't know where this Forum is headquartered or based, but here in the United States of America we have a thing called "Free Speech" that protects the citizens of our Country from exactly what has just occurred here.
What was censored wasn't really that bad, no profane language or anything, just a reference to the shortsightedness of some engineers. I hope this isn't a Forum where you're only Welcome if you post "MSI is GREAT!" and are not allowed to even whisper anything even slightly negative about them...
As a background I've been in IT support roles for around 25 years. Managed Digital Equipment Corp. VAX's and Alpha's (VMS, ULTIRX, and Tru64 UNIX, started using VAX's in 1978), Sun's Enterprise large servers and assortment of other SPARC boxes (Solaris), IBM 6x0's, and a host of smaller systems running both UNIX and Linux. I cut my teeth on DEC's ULTRIX.
That said, to come across a RAID controller in the year 2006 that will not allow you to preserve the data on one of its members when creating a mirrorset is just unconscionable. So I made reference to the shortsightedness of the engineers by referring that they might be something, and that got censored. I was hoping that might be a wakeup call to these engineers, sort of like a 2x4 upside the head, so they don't make a mistake like this again.
And I learned something else about the ATI SB600 South Bridge RAID controller which once again is just unconscionable. If you take a disk with a filesystem on it, with data, and have the SB600 present it to the OS as a JBOD, it clears the partition table. What!?!? Yes. There is no warning that this is going to occur. Promise's FastTrak controllers *do not* wipe out the partition table. They just present any disk that is not part of a mirrorset to the OS. That seems like a really good idea, ya think? But the SB600 don't do that, it doesn't present the disk to the OS unless it is part of and LD so you have to assign it to one as a JBOD. Poof! Partition table gone!
I just cannot fathom the mindset of the engineers that created the ATI SB600 South Bridge RAID functionality. They just do not seem to be aware of what is expected of a RAID controller in this day and age. They must live their life very sheltered and not have any idea of what other vendors are doing and what the users of their products expect.
Bottom line: The MSI K9A Platinum seems to be a decent MB, but better suited for an full install from scratch then as a replacement MB for an existing, running, seasoned system, if the objective is to use the SB600 RAID controller and preserve existing data on existing disks. I know there's multiple ways to get around this, but that's jumping through hoops that I never had to jump through before.
If anyone is interested I was able to use my existing disk's mirrorset and preserve the OS and data on them.
The steps:
1. Know which is the disk you want to use and duplicate the data from, like Port 1 Master (this is related to SATA drives connected to the MB).
2. Using the FastBuild BIOS Utility create a mirrorset using the two drives. Set Gigabyte Boundary to OFF, set Fast Init to OFF. DO NOT SET Fast Init TO ON, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MBR!
NOTE! NOTE! NOTE! If you're so inclined to use the ATI SATA RAID Utility that you can get from MSI's website to initially create the mirrorset that comes along with WebPAM which you put and use on a bootable floppy, DO NOT "Initialize Array", DO NOT "Synchronize Array", NO, NO, NO!
3. Boot the OS if it will boot but I doubt it BUT DON'T LET IT BOOT INTO THE OS. With the OS only really on one of the disks I don't know what would happened and if the RAID controller uses the "Read Least Busy" algorithm who knows what will happened.
4. Power down the system and unplug the SATA drive that DOES NOT have the OS on it.
5. See if the system will boot. If so great, proceed to step 7.
6. Do what you have to do to get the system to boot with only the one, original drive connected and in the mirrorset. Ignore for now the FastBuild warnings on boot that mirrorset is CRITICAL. In my case I had to use the Windows XP install CD and Repair an existing installation.
7. Install from MSI ATI's WebPAM utility.
8. Power down the system.
9. Connect the SATA drive that is to be the second member of the mirrorset that you disconnected in step 4. Power up the system. When you get FastBuild's warning that your mirrorset is CRITICAL ignore it. DO NOT GO INTO THE FASTBUILD BIOS AND DO A REBUILD THERE. NO! NO! NO! I tried that once on a 500GB mirrorset and after 8 hours with the drive activity light blinking sort of dimly it's progress was still at 0%.
10. Once the OS is running (Windows I presume, XP Pro in my case), start WebPAM. if all went well you will see that WebPAM knew the mirrorset was missing a member, found the FREE drive you reconnected in step 9, and is already in the process of rebuilding the mirrorset. If not, you can manually start the rebuilding process in WebPAM.
Of note, WebPAM only took somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 hours to rebuild the 500GB mirrorset as opposed to the BIOS rebuild running for 8 hours and accomplishing nothing. (This wasn't a one time anomaly, I had tried it before letting it run a few hours and saw no progress. The 8 hour run was just to be sure.) While the WebPAM rebuild is running you are in Windows and it is running and you could do other things. I didn't though, I left it run until it finished.
There ya go, a rather unorthodox way to make a mirrorset on a MSI K9A Platinum preserving your OS and data and getting around the shortcomings of the ATI SB600 South Bridge RAID implementation.
And I know I could have used Ghost. But that is in hindsight. I would have had to know I needed to do that *before* removing and replacing the MB. But I didn't do that, because I didn't know I was dealing with a brain dead RAID controller.

K9A Platinum temps reading

I have a dilemma. It is about CPU temp readings. I have k9a platinum, 2 gigs of ram (patriot 4-4-4-12) , athlon64 x2 4000+ Brisbane. I have zalman 9500fan with Arctic silver 5 thermal paste. I didn`t overclocked and cool`n`quite is off. I am using SpeedFan v4.31 and MSI Core Center. I have different reading SpeedFan says CPU temp is 39 C and CoreCell says it is 33C. Both of these when CPU is on idle. When I use let say Orthos for couple of hours temps go up to 50C. These readings a bit too high. What is the difference between these two programs? which is better and if these too a bad what to use. Wht is normal temp for my cpu?
PS computer case is open. Outside temp is 16C.

I wouldn't be concerned 50C isn't extremely hot. It's a little hot for my own personaly standards, but AMD CPU's are supposed to work (well) up to or around 70C. So that's well under the "max"
This just reminded me of the Duron Processor that my Mother had in her PC. The CPU Fan Stopped working, well we didn't know it and she just kept on using it since she's not very inclined as far as computers go. She calls me one day saying that The Comp's locking up from time to time, runs pretty slow, and my little brother couldn't play games cause they would just crash. I was thinkin spy-ware/Ad-ware/Virus/etc. I went to her house and while I was looking at it I noticed it wasn't too clogged as far as those things go, I also noticed the CPU Temp was pretty high, like 70C+, So I thought maybe the case was just real dirty or something, Sure enough I open the case and the fan wasn't spinning, I was like omg I can't believe this thing still runs!
The CPU still works to this day. We have dubbed it the Durable Duron lol. It's like an old 800MHz or something, but I just found it funny that it was running for weeks on end with just a stock AMD heatsink with no fan, which at the Duron stage, were very poor in design lol, nothing at all like the new heatsink/fans that are packaged with the CPU's. I was really suprised when I opened up my 6000+ and looked at the fan/heatsink assembly. I was like wow I don't even need an aftermarket fan with this thing! Kinda felt like I just wasted money on the Fan I bought at the time lol.
Anyways, if you are wondering why there is a difference in the temps between the 2 programs, check out EVEREST. You'll notice it has 3 seperate sensors for CPU, CPU Core #1, and CPU Core #2, all of which will be different, mine for example right now show... 29C for the CPU, but the Cores show 39C and 32C. So One of those programs might be reading the CPU Cores Directly, and the other might be reading the MotherBoard's Sensor or something like that. But I have noticed that the MSI CoreCenter App shows the same temp as the Everest's plain CPU temp, not the Cores, so I judge my personal readings on that instead of the Cores, which are inherently higher.
I use a Zalman 9700 and Arctic Silver 5 as well. CPU can still get in the mid 40's under high load. But I'm also O/C'd @ 3.2 from 3.0, not a hugh O/C but still enough to cause a slight increase in temp.
Anyways, that's my explination of it. Take it for what you will.

After the 1.5 BIOS of the K9A Platinum , BIOS went downhill .... I'm not using either 1.6 or 1.7 now cause my 8800GTX doesn't run ok.It seems it runs downclocked.For example when 3Dmark06 starts , with 1.5 i have 65FPS , with 1,6 and 1.7 i have 37FPS .I had in the past opened a thread here having that prob and in the end it was the BIOS.I was really hoping the 1.7 would solve this issue , but no ... And except that i have an AMD X2 5200+ and i wonna put extra voltage to o/c it but 1.25 is way low.My pc posts just fine in the beginning but doesn't boot on windows.I really think that if the highest vcore voltage value to set to M/B was 1.5 i would be able to o/c my CPU and boot in windows.Hope 1.8 will fix those probs ...

Stick with the BIOS that works best!
BIOS versions are NOT updates! they are bug-fixes....
Newer revisions doe not nessesary offer better OC or better workings...
Also, do not count on too much OC fixes, as they don't make new revisions to solve OC problems.

So go back to 1.5

K9A Platinum - Periodic lock up

Hey folks,
New to this forum and MSI boards in general. Having an issue where my PC is locking up periodically in XP (32 bit) that I can't quite figure out. Initially after performing a fresh install of XP my machine locked up occasionally while unattended. Basically it seemed that if I walked away for 5-15 minutes, when i'd come back it would have locked up (while running windows update, for example).
After being sure I had installed all the drivers (and updating to the latest bios) I could find for the motherboard, including AMD's dual core optimizer, this problem seemed to have been resolved - until last evening. I ran a torrent program and again, after leaving the PC unattended for a few minutes, it locked up. This happens like clockwork when using either Burst! or uTorrent.
Any suggestions?

ONLY thing important is amps per rail! 3 rails with each 18a doesn't mean you have 54a total! They can't be simply added as the component using one rail can't use another when the used one doesn't provide enough power. That's why a strong single rail is the best to have.

Memory setting to be found in bios "dram settings". The CMD Rate is the chipset latency, the time the chipset needs to select the ram chips.
2T is the slower but safer setting as many AM2 systems have problems with 1T.

Applescript won't run as .app but runs fine in AppleScript Editor

I'm an experienced web developer.. but total applescript noob. so forgive me if this is a silly question.
I'm calling my script it from Flash via fscommand to launch a PDF using finder, rather than a browser.
The script works great from AppleScript Editor when i hit run but when saved as a .app it doesn't run.
any ideas?

A script application is actually an application bundle - a bundle is a kind of folder that gets treated like a single item (in this case, an application). Getting path to me results in a path that ends with a colon (since it is a folder), so when you try to use text item delimiters to get the container you are actually just stripping off the trailing colon, so the path built for your file won't point to the correct location.
As previously posted, the Finder can get the container, so you can just do everything in a tell application "Finder" statement:
