K9A Platinum memory question

I have just purchased  1 x (249621) MSI K9A Platinum Xpress 3200 Sempron/Athlon 64(FX)(X2) SktAM2 DDR2 ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA Retail mother board. My question is about the memory - On the MSI web it says this mother board supports Supports Dual DDR2 533/667/800 and 4 DDR2 DIMMs (240pin / 1.8V). What memory brands and models does this mother board support? Can I get memory what has higher volts than 1.8 like 2.0 or higher? I was looking on www.zipzoomfly.com for memory but I don't want to get the wrong memory please help. I want to get 2 gigs of memory can I just run one 2 gig sim by it self or do I need to have 2 1 gig sims and what is cheaper. I would like to get something around $200.00. please help.

vonbarter,
I did find two options which meet your criteria:
OCZ S.O.E 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory $190 after MIR
OCZ Gold Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory $200 after MIR
Take Care,
Richard

  • K9A Platinum ~ Purchasing Questions and Setup

Hi, I'm trying to build a new system and I'm just having a TERRIBLE time getting a good motherboard to actually work.... I was running a Crossfire 939 AMD system and I wanted to upgrade it.
I had originally purchased a DFI Lanparty 3200 Crossfire Intel board and a core duo 2 chip.  After the fact, I found out the board is very buggy and has a bad problem with memory post.  It got stuck in a C1 error and I could not fix it and had to send it back.
I then decided to stick with AMD and I got a Asus M2R32-MVP board and a Athlon 64 FX-62 chip... again, I'm having problems as the motherboard will turn itself off within 2 seconds of turning it on.
I am considering running out to Microcenter this weekend and grabbing a K9A Platinum but I wanted to get some feedback before I bought it as to setting it up, if its compatible with my ram and power supply... I did read that the board is defaulted to 1.8v memory and the ram I have is 2.1v.
I'm kinda at my wits end about this and I'm really frustrated.  I'll list the other components below:
    Thermaltake toughpower W0105RU ATX12V / EPS12V 700W Power Supply - Retail
    OCZ ATI CrossFire 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2A8002GK - Retail (4 sticks = 4 gigs)
NZXT Apollo BLACK NP Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail
Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
    And the AMD 64 FX-62 AM2
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the input...
Also if you note... I do NOT  have any components hooked up to the board except the cpu, 1 ram stick and the psu.  I do not have my cards, my hard drives or my sound card hooked up.
Its turning off by itself with nothing but the ram, the cpu and the psu hooked up.
Can you recommend a higher wattage single rail than a 610?
You really think its my power supply?

"Also how do i set my HT link speed, all i've got is "overclocking" and "standard"? "
if you are OC, use/select "overclocking" HT setting. if you use stock parameters use "standard" HT setting.
"Also my 1T/2T option is greyed out, how do i change it?"
should be able to change it, you may need to apply memory config to manually 1st.(parrent menu)
"Lastly, how can i run 2 HDD's on raid and another non-raid."
enable raid(from BIOS) for channels where are connected your 2HDD which gonna be part of the RAID, then create an array(from RAID utility just after bios post), pickup desired RAID mode and assign your 2 HDDs(don't forget to make them active(bootable, with "B" key at the end of process).
for 3th drive, just use it like regular drive, disable RAID for the channel where it is connected.

  • P35 Platinum memory question.

    Hello!
Im new on this forum and I have a little question. I have two Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5 Kit w/two matched CM2X1024A-6400 Dimm's and just want to now wich slots they should be in. I currently have them in slot 1 (green) and 3 (orange). But I have heard that when using two ddrmem they should be placed in the right way for the best stability.
    regards
    Nav

ok, thanks. Then I don't have to wonder about that anymore

Right! Now you heard it from someone else, msiguy (Told him so in another thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=110924.0).
Remember oc is a matter of luck, it depends on the individual sample.

  • K9a platinum and ocz memory cas 4-5-4-15

    Hi ,
I need help and i need it fast
I have k9a platinum and i want to buy this memory:
    OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800, 4-5-4-15,
Is it compatible with my mobo and do u have opinion about this ram?
    Thanx

Well my OCZ RAM which is meant to run @ 800MHz 4-4-4-15 timings. Runs very fine @ 800MHz w/ 4-4-4-10. 4-4-4-10 works up until about 870MHz.
OCZ seem to state their timings lower then the RAM sticks can actually cope for some reason.
I'm pretty sure it'll work, but contact OCZ for a correct answer.
Also like Bas said: Sig should be updated

  • Why no CPU support of Phenoms on K9A Platinum ?

    Hi there people,
I know I am rather new to the board...or at least I didn't post in a long time.
First I hope I choose the right forum for my question. If I didn't I am sorry and hope that a moderator will be so kind and move my topic accordingly.
Now to my question, as a happy owner of a K9A Platinum board, which I had choosen last X-Mas because it was common consensus that it will be able to use Phenom cores later on since the use the same "Socket" basically apart from the memory controller and HT differences between AM2 and AM2+.
Now it looks like MSI is not going to release a BIOS capable of supporting the new phenoms ? Or is it just they are waiting for the new steppings with the fixed TLB bug to release a BIOS for those CPUs ?
Does anyone have more insight in this matter ? I mean I can understand MSI policy in that they want to sell K9A2 (or any other AM2+) boards but I find it rather unfair to those customers who had bought a K9A (or generally a Socket AM2 board, because K9A2 wasnt out back then when I bought it). And as other companies do show it is possible to switch the BIOS on the exact same chipsets to support Phenom cores. So why not the MSI board(s).
    See here: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&prod_no=259&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=171&cat3_no=#menu
I am a longterm MSI customer having had MSI mainboards for years now and this is the first time I actually have a "problem". I paid 100€ for my mainboard last year and I am not willing to spend another 100€ to circle around a limitation which should be fixable with a BIOS update (see ASUS) ?
Maybe I should reconsider my longterm customership with MSI and switch to ASUS...which I would not like as an option.
Is there any chance that MSI will bring out a Phenom supporting BIOS ? They did bring out such BIOSes for other mainboards so why not the K9A ? Its basically the same as the K9A2 afaik ?
Lastly I want to partly apologize for my little "rant" above...I am just at the moment so disappointed.

I see...however then I find it quite strange that the same chipset mainboard from ASUS for example allows for that update ?
Do those have really differing BIOS chipsizes ? I though the BIOS is stored in a piece of hardware provided by the chipset manufacturer ?
    http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=149&l3=624
As you probably already realized I am no expert when it comes to BIOSes...suffice to say that I tend to know what I am doing when flashing it and I know a little about hardware in general.
Perhaps you could elaborate further on this ?
"Do those have really differing BIOS chipsizes ? I though the BIOS is stored in a piece of hardware provided by the chipset manufacturer ?
    http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=149&l3=624"
Yes that which you linked is using 8Mbit BIOS chip, while your mainboard is using 4Mbit BIOS chip.
    However:
"I see...however then I find it quite strange that the same chipset mainboard from ASUS for example allows for that update ?"
We don't care for other brands than MSI. Please stop link to different manufacturers.
You can view list of Phenom Ready MSI mainboards here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=113759.0
As you can see there is a budget models as well. Its the matter of BIOS capacity.

  • Overclocking K9A Platinum

I was wondering if there are any overclockers who have gotten a K9A Platinum with a 5200+ Windsor (2.6GHz) to run over 3.3 GHz?
I'm pretty experienced as an overclocker and I have a liquid cooling system. I can't cross the 3.3 Gig threshold to save my life. I'm not talking instability..I post, all looks good but then it doesn't even bother to boot to Windows. I only get as far as 3.27 GHz and it is rock solid at around 40C under load. It just seems odd to me that my overclock would stop so abruptly at 3.3
    Thanks!
    gg

I'm running 252 X 13 with voltage at 1.350 + 20%. I have my memory base at 667 with an adjusted freq of like 830 or in that area. The only HT link speed setting on my board is "Standard" or "For Overclocking", whatever that means. I've tried lowering my divider to 12 and all kinds of other things. In every case, I can't get to 3.30 GHz.
I'm considering lowering the proc freq so I can get more out of my memory by starting at 800 and trying to reach a balance of max memory freq along with a lower overclock. I guess the question is; which will benefit me more: A maxed out proc with a lower memory freq? or ,a lower proc overclock with maxed out memory?

    the problem in question is
I pressed the power button, I got the LEDs, and fans on for about a second, then poof, dead again. I pressed the power button, and nothing happens. If I unplug and plug the power cord back in, it happens all over again, no sounds, no leds, no fans, even the PSU fans are dead, nothing on the screen, some one says the may be the ram, but i dont think so cuz i try it with other diferent module and didnt work, and with out the ram at all, and the same problem, and if the ram were the problem at least without any of it, the system will let me know the is not ram place it, with a sound alarm or something like that !!! i think ....  well i Really hope the some one can help me please and thks

  • K9A Platinum Won't load XP PRO 64

I have a K9A Platinum board, Athlon 64 x2 4800+, 4 x 1 GB OCZ Gold ram.  The system boots up, recognizes the raid drive, starts to install Windows, I specify the driver for the raid controller, it loads it, finishes loading all the rest of the drivers, and then sits there with a blank blue screen with the text "Starting Windows"  at the bottom.
It will not go past this point.  Any ideas?

It has nothing to do with the board!
But everything with the CPU and number of memory banks.
The CPU only supports 4 banks at full speed, this is:
2 sticks double sided (=4 banks)
4 sticks single sided (=4 banks)
This is a CPU limitation, not board.
Normaly you can get it running with more then 4 banks by reducing the memory speed.

  • 915P Neo2 Platinum - Memory?

Have devoured the MSI website & various others & I'm still not sure if DDR2 667 - PC2 5300 or DDR2 667 PC2 5400 is safe to use in the 915P Neo2 Platinum.  One very tiny phrase, in one place, on MSI's website IMPLIES that it is OK, ". . . Support Dual Channel DDR2 533/400 MHz and up", BOLD emphasis mine.  "and up"?  I just can't interpret this.
At the price of these DDR2 DIMMS, this is no place to make a mistake, but the DDR2 667 PC2 5400 modules seem to be more plentiful, & even more competitively priced, than the DDR2 533/400 modules.
This is my third MSI build, & some of the posts here make me think I've made a mistake this time.
    I would appreciate any advice/observations/experiences.

Some early, tentative answers to my memory question(s) are beginning to trickle in.  As many of you undoubtedly know, DDR2-675 is a still-developing area, leading edge stuff.  I did not heretofore know this . . . maybe I should have.
I am not a lazy PC enthusiast.  Maybe I missed some of the available resources in my earlier searches & too soon resorted to pleading my case in this Forum (a dandy, if anyone cares what I think), & by writing Corsair.   The "RAM Guy" at Corsair emailed me back with a nice, informative answer, & in the meantime I had just located some apparent answers on my own. Maybe these resources had been updated since I first looked, maybe I missed them, whatever, here are a few links that shed blinding light on the entire subject of DDR2-675 and some "wicked" latencies:

I am a 59-year old retiree geek-guy, with enough time to buy PC component parts & then build PCs and PC systems (this one for a grandson), & to research my choices.  But, it's still difficult to track down the information novice builders like me need to make informed choices.  The build process is infinitely rewarding, challenging, and, yes, at times very frustrating.  I know . . . not exactly a news flash to any of you reading this.
Sorry if I previously whined in this fine Forum, & on this especially useful Board, "Intel P4 & Celeron P4 based board".

  • K9A BIOS Flashing Question.

Ok this is a quick question regarding BIOS flashing,
When flashing the BIOS of the K9A Platinum, I should follow the AMI BIOS Flash Procedure
Instructions NOT the Award BIOS Flash Procedure or Flashing the BIOS for Non-FAT file system instructions, right? (my hdd drives are NTFS formatted).

Quote from: AlexTG on 15-July-07, 22:28:40
I downloaded yesterday the Windows Proggie AMI gives for flashing the BIOS ... works like a charm
    nice as well
so 1.6 is hurting VGA performance you got 8800 GTX with lower scores when using 1.6 and just fine scores with 1.5.
crackedd got the same result, but with x1950 VGA.(https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=109699.msg814859#msg814859)

  • K9a platinum problems

    Hi,  new member here.
I'm sorry that my first post is to ask for help, but this is my problem:
    I have a K9a platinum, x1900gt 254mb, 1G ram pc6400, Xp SP2.
For some reason,  my pc won't pass the drect3D 7 test (and only the 7, I have no problem with the 8 or 9), it just freezes..(so there are a lot of programs that don't work)
I have the 6.9 ati catalyst, and the october release of directx.
I've been fighting with this problem for a week, I did it all, uninstalled all the dirvers, installed again, tried all the downloads at the support page...
The only thing I didn't do is update the BIOS. My bios is the 1.1 version and I cannot update to 1.2 the AMi flash utility (windows based) freezes at the moment of the flash, and the floppy flash hangs when it loads the menu...
Is there a bios protecion? I couldn't find anything about it at the bios setup :(
    a jumper maybe?
Thanks for reading, I'm really desperate, I've no idea what to do.
    leomanya.

Hey XANADUSERVERS!!!   GOOD news!!! EXTRA EXTRA!!
I was trying what you said, i tried to flash from floppy whith no hard drive, no nothing, and it failed, but then I connected the hdds (I had just 1 memory stick from the other test) and I did a direct3d test and WORKED fine!!, It was the f**king memory in dual channel that's somehow messing up..
UF, I'm really happy, at least I know the mother is fine...
humm .. I have to figure up how to make the memory work maybe I have to clock the correct speeds manually.. the problem is that I have no idea of the timming of this memory, is a Tyrex (?) pc6400 kinda generic.
    I'm a cheapsake, I don't wanna buy a new pair of RAMS
PS- Thanks man, for all your replies and help , cheers.

  • K9a Platinum MOBO Drivers or Sapphire?

    Hello,
I am set up on a k9a Platinum and am also running two Sapphire Radeon 1950 Pro (w/crossfire).  My question is simple and ask forgiveness if its already been addressed.  When I am installing from anew, MSI provides the AMD Chipset driver, which is just a bundled AMD/ATI Catylyst Control Center (w/display, c++ Vis basic, etc.)   Do I also install/update with the package from Sapphire Tech?

Yes, the MSI driver is for Chipset (although it seems to install CCC) but not Graphics drivers (unless you have integrated video).
