K9A Platinum SATA RAID issue

Hi! I'm new to the forums..I have built a new system with the K9a Plat mobo and its a great board. I can't seem to RAID my 2 WD2500YS hard drives to save my life.Though this is my first RAID attempt..(sigh) I tried changing the BIOS setting for my SATA from Native IDE to Raid, the Fast Build utility comes up showing both of my drives but I can't make any changes from there (should I be able to?) and then my system wont boot to XP. I put the SATA back to native IDE, reinstalled Windows XP using F6 to load the x86 RAID driver off of floppy, it proceeds to the XP install showing my 2 drives (C and F). I install XP on my C drive but it just installs as normal. I must be doing something wrong to run hardware RAID.
I tried to go with software RAID within XP Pro but I cant convert my C drive to dynamic, it says "one or more drives dont have enough room..etc". My F drive shows as dynamic... I'm really at a loss! I would like to run a hardware RAID 0.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Gerry

I got it going! Woohoo! I wasnt sure about some of the options such as stripe size, fast init, and cache something ..heh.. I left the stripe size as 64, went with fast init, and did writethru cache. Are these OK? I'm looking for performance...
Windows XP seems to be happy..it shows the 2 drive Raid 0 array when I look at the C drive properties. Do i need to do anything else in XP Pro?
Thanks again for all the help!
Gerry

  • K8N Platinum - SATA RAID issue

Hey there everyone, I have recently decided to reinstall XP on my system and I require the drivers that were included on the two floppy disks that came with my Mobo. I have recently moved houses and lost both of the disks in the process. I have tried a variety of drivers from the internet but to no prevail. I cannot remember what the disks were labeled as but Im hoping somebody out there has them!

    read Moan Guide
do you mean K8N Neo Platinum board? if yes you can find drivers which you need here:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=574
if no be more specific for the exact mainboard model.

  • K9A Platinum Low Raid 0 Performance?

hi i just build this pc a few days ago and i did some tests on my raid using HD Tach (and on a website called pcpitstop.com)
both of these seem to be reporting my hard drives are doing no more than 80MB/s ... even though i have setup RAID 0 for 3 drives on the utility with the motherboard,
a friend of mine (who uses 4 drives in raid 0 of EXACTLY the same type of hard drive) gets more than 320MB/s on his drives ....
    i fail to see how 3 of my drives = 80 MB/s, whilst 4 of his = 320MB/s
I installed the driver and took off the jumper at the back of the drive (to make them SATA II)
I checked the RAID config utility and all the settings seem to be perfect, however the drives seem to be failing to deliver the transfer speed i am looking for ...
My IDE drive is comparable to this setup, which kind of defies the point of me paying so much money for a RAID setup that's giving me the performance of only one of my drives
Windows recognises one drive, and says RAID 0 so i guess the RAID is working it's just not performing properly
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
    thanks

    Hi!
    Please read Moan Guide first.
In general: RAID-0 performance is often exaggerated, although your speed seems to be too low. RAID-0 speeds depend on many things: the way the RAID has been set up (block/chunk size, driver, disks, controller, etc). Furthermore, different bench tools will show you different speeds, so don't depend too much on what a tool tells you.
*Edit: don't confuse burst speed with average read/write speeds! The burst speed can exceed the read/write speeds by a factor more than 2!
Some tips you may want to try:
    - enable/disable NCQ (Device Manager -> SCSI/RAID-devices);
    - try a different block size;
    - try a different/newer driver or try the driver that came with the board;
    - use the manufacturer's disk tool to have all disks checked for any errors. You may need to connect them as if they are IDE's to make them being recognized properly.
Then this: As far as I'm aware, Windows will not show RAID-0, unless you set up the RAID through Windows disk manager (system tools). If you did setup through Windows disk manager, please setup RAID again using the RAID bios on you board.
    hey thanks for the reply, i'll try and give you some more info on what's going on;
    firstly some more computer specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 bit dual core 5000+
Graphics: ATI x1950XT-X Crossfire Edition (Single card at the moment)
Mobo: K9A Platinum (havent updated bios yet)
    PSU: OCZ GameXStream 700W
    RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator DHX PC2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)
HDD: 3xSeagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache  - (Took the jumpers off the back to make them SATA II)
The motherboard uses the ATI XPRESS 3200 chipset, which supports up to 4x SATA II Drives, this is what i have used to connect the hard drives to. The Motherboard also offers a RAID utility for 0,1, and 0+1 RAID - i have used raid 0 with block size 128KB (it offered 64 or 128), FastInit was ON, and the other 2 settings i couldnt change, i activated all drives to the array and setup (in the BIOS) for the SATA's to be seen as a RAID configuration.
The latest drivers i used was catalyst 7.5 available from ATI website, the drivers on the CD dont work because i use Vista 64, and the CD says it doesnt support my OS, so i downloaded them.
In response to windows seeing the RAID .... i meant it see's one normal hard drive but the disk comes up as a RAID SCSI device in Propeties -> Hardware, that is the name the RAID utility (straight after POST) gives to the array i think, and so windows recognises it as one.

  • P965 Platinum SATA RAID drivers to slipstream

    Hey guys,
Once in a while I slipstream SATA and SATA RAID drivers into my WinXP Pro setup cd, so I will not need a floppy on any system. My setup cd now contains drivers for VIA VT8237, nForce3, Promise 20378 and Promise 20579 controllers. I would like to add Intel ICH8R drivers...
I know how to do it, that's not the issue. But on MSI's download section for my P965 Platinum I can find two drivers:
Which one is to be used to setup RAID arrays on the ICH8R? Both contain contents for a floppy, both folders and files look the same. It's just that they differ in size, so I'm not sure which one I need. Do I need to slipstream both drivers to setup a RAID 0, 1 or 5 array?
    Thnx in advance...

Quote from: Quadrifoglio Verde on 03-March-07, 23:47:11
Alright, thanks. Why the first one and not the second one? Is there a difference between the two? I can not slipstream both, as they are both named "iastor.sys"...
"I can not slipstream both, as they are both named "iastor.sys"..."
you no need to put them both, only one of them.
they are the same version, all files match except iastor.sys size (in same time both iastor.sys are "same version" too.. 6.0.0.1022)
"Why the first one and not the second one?"
just guess, because MSI put them as ICH8R SATA RAID Driver as primary. if you have any problems you can try drivers from second achieve.

  • P35 PLATINUM sata performance issue.

    p35 plat
    c2d 6850
    2 x maxtor 200 gig sata 2 drives
    1 seagate 320 gig sata 2 drive
    4 gig 1066 mem
    winxp32 sp 2
Hi all, I'm on my second p35 as my first one died due to a duff mem slot and I think this ones developed a fault to. Up until about 3 weeks ago the board and 3 individual sata 2 drives have performed flawlessly but then while burning a dvd with nero the buffer emptied and the disk failed. I also noticed that winrar extraction of dvdr in .rar format that normally takes 1min 25 secs to unrar to a drive was taking as long as 4 minutes if not more.
The normal sata performance seems to have halved for no apparent reason, hdd tach was reporting problems with 2 drives but these have now disappeared. It seems like there is a problem but I cant pin it down to one specific thing because the system runs fine other than that. No crashes, bosd's or anything else; just really crap hdd drive performance when transferring files and and unraring file between the drives.I'm even seeing cyclic redundancy errors from my hdd when transferring files. I have just tried encoding a dvd image [ on 1 drive to another ] using dvdshrink and where in the past I would see 40,000kbs speed now it crawled along at 19,000.
So is my sata contoller on the board broken/failing and how can I test it to prove it? Thanks in advance people.

The system ran fine for weeks with no probs. Same psu no change [ enermax is not a cheap generic psu plus its a carry over from my old sytem that ran 2 7800 gtx's in sli with the same hdd's]. I find it hard to believe that sustained data transfer between drives would be a psu issue all of a sudden. Burning a dvd to disk would not be an excessive power drain, that was the first time the fault maifested itself. Also that was the only thing happening at the time. Im not a multi tasker, one thing at a time. I do appreciate you guys throwing idea's my way. I'm hedging towards an intermitent hdd problem but as its not all the time its going to be a bugger to pin down as which drive it is. I would love it to be as simple as a dodgey hdd as otherwise how do you recreate a sata controller issue when faulting a mobo

  • K8N Neo2 platinum & 750g sata RAID issue

Hi there I have an issue with booting up. I have 1 200g Western digital HDD where windows is installed and I have 1 further 500g WD drive which were both fine until I decided to buy 2 samsung 750g HDD's to run in RAID. I have installed the drives in RAID and formatted but I am having a problem with booting.
If I reset, the computer keeps rebooting at the detection stage, powers off and keeps doing it over and over. Sometimes it will go through if you wait long enough. When I turn the power on and off it will go through the detection stage no worries every time but then at the XP loading screen it will freeze there. Sometimes it goes through and I will boot into XP fine and other times I can't get in.
I have the latest Bios 7025V1D but I am wondering if this issue is bios related because of the 750g size... The problem has only started since I have installed the two 750g HDD's in RAID. Does this bios version support 750g HDD's? Is there an updated BIOS to fix this problem somewhere?
I have 2gig of ram, 3500+ processor, latest Nforce3 drivers from Nvidia, RAID drives on sata ports/3/4, 500gig WD on sata port 1, 200 gig WD is HDD is IDE, Windows SP2 and all updated, ummmmmm everything else is fine I'm fairly sure.
I had a few troubles installing the RAID drivers because windows didn't want to accept the drivers I downloaded from here and did not want to accept the drivers in windows. I ended up getting it the drives to come on-line through the use of START/NVIDIA corp/ NVIDIA RAID program (cant remember the name, typing this on another computer).
Any ideas would be greatly and very muchly appreciated!
    Terry.

    Ok My PSU is: WideTECH 550w, +3.3v=33a, +5v=36a, +12v=25a, -12v=1.0a, +5vsb=2.5a.
I am only running 3 HDD's at the moment, the 2 750's and the 1 200gig. I have left the other 500gig unplugged until I get this problem sorted. I don't have a cd rom plugged in or a floppy. I only connect them when I need to because this computer is setup to be a storage server and I use my other pc for anything dvd related etc. The only other thing which is chewing power is the video card which is an old 6800gt ultra. So basically the power issue was fine until I installed the two extra HDD's and as I have unplugged the 500gig for the time being its only really one extra HDD which shouldn't be an issue. Oh I have two 80mm case fans using the psu aswell.
As for my other specs: I have 1 gig of Geil dual channel RAM 2x512 sticks, CPU=AMD Athlon64 3500+, MB is MSI K8n Neo2 Platinum, Vid card= Leadtek geforce 6800gt ultra 256 agp, You know about my HDD's but here they are again= 1x 200g WD caviar IDE, 1x 500g WD caviar sata(1 I think), 2 x 750g samsung sata (2 I think), OS = XP Home SP2 with all lasest automatic updates, latest BIOS etc etc etc....
My windows is a legit copy as well.
You mentioned putting my HDD's into sata 1 mode... I was of the opinion that my motherboard does not support sata2 anyway and would not allow them to run in anything but sata1?? If I did want to change the sata mode where would I do this anyway?
Thanks for your reply but I don't think it has to do with psu or sata mode although I'm interested about this sata2 thing, please explain.
    Thanks in advance,
    Terry.

  • K9A2 Platinum Sata Raid Problems

I could not get my 2 500 gb seagate 7200.11 drives to work on the sb600 raid controller, in raid 1 (set to raid mode in bios).  I'd set it up and it would remain functional until I formatted it and put stuff on it. Then when I restarted, it says critical and can't locate the second drive, but it shows up in the list of definable drives.  My older 200 gb seagates 7200.9 in the same setup do not have this problem.  I finally got my 500s working by hooking them up to the promise controller instead.  (Although no longer a current problem, I wouldn't mind knowing what would cause this for future occasions.)
My new problem is, I had to unhook all but the drive I wanted to install Windows XP on (A separate 120 JBOD configured drive) so I could get it to be C:/.  This all went fine.  However when I hooked up the 500s again, Windows XP would not boot, the screen just stayed black, with them not hooked up, it boots just fine, with the 200s as well.  When running the Windows XP setup again, the 500s appear as C:/ instead of the 120 in the disk select screen of the install.  It's like the 500s took over the drive letter when they are hooked up and thus can't load.  Is there some way to stop it from doing this or am I completely off on this.
    My computer spec is:
    K9A2 Platinum
    AMD X2 6000
    2*2gb OCZ PC6400
    ATI Radeon 3870
    700 Watt OCZ PSU
Update: Installing XP ignoring the fact its not C: fails.  It copies all the files onto it, then after restarting I get a black screen.
Another Update: On a whim I tried disabling the SB600 raid and set it to AHCI instead as I read that other people were having problems with it and it all works perfectly now.  It's too bad this doesn't work, but I'll just put the 200s back in my old computer instead.

I'm having the exact same problem you did. Same Mobo. Except I started off with Promise RAID 1 because when I tried using SB600 RAID, my SATA DVD drive would not function in Vista Ultimate x64. So I had my Raid 1 configured on Promise T3 with BIOS 2.8.1030.0021 using 2 320GB drives. One of them Seagate, one WD, both 3GB/s transfer, only difference was that Seagate has 16MB cache, while the WD has 8MB. But both drives worked fine in the array for some time, and then after doing some updates from Windows Updates now the Raid config shows that encountered a critial status, "A disk member of an array has failed or is not responding", "Problem is detected with Array : 1". And when I go to the see the Array status it shows the Seagate drive on ID channel 1, but for the 2nd drive it shows questions marks all the way through the item line. I checked the drive, it seems fine. And even when I go to define a second Array, it shows the WD available on channel ID 3. So it definitely see both drives, but how do I re-add that WD drive that it doesn't see to my earlier defined array without loosing data on my Seagate drive?

  • P965 Platinum / SATA / RAID

Because of my case and power supply I had to connect my two hard drives to the 2nd and 3rd SATA connectors on the motherboard.  It was too tight when using the first SATA connector.  Although everything is working the thought occurred to me that there might be an issue.  Is performance affected by doing this?  Any issues that I'm not seeing by doing this?  I have setup RAID 1 with two HITACHI 320GB 0A33435 SATA2 7200RPM 16MB ROHS drives.  I have installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and it appears to be running fine.  Thanks in advance.

Looks fine.  I don't think the Intel ICH8R RAID controller really cares which of its SATA ports you are using.  If everything seems to work fine there is no reason to suspect any hidden issues.

  • K9A2 Platinum SATA Raid driver floppy

Made the disk per directions. Choices in winXP install are X64 & X86. Manual says should be X32 & X64. I tried 86, XP installed, but wont boot. Is there more needed than what the manual states on the floppy? What drivers do you use for the promise raid. I have raid enabled. Plugged into sata 1 & 2. Using 2 raptors. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Got it working. Not sure which setting fixed it though.

  • MSI X58 Platinum SLI RAID Issues

I recently bought another 300GB WD VelociRaptor and I am trying to set up a RAID 0 array through the BIOS using the JMicron controller. (sata7 and 8) I have set it up in the bios through the DriveBooster Manager or whatever and selected RAID 0.  Windows setup detects a 600gb stripe but will not let me install due to drivers.  I have put the JMicron drivers on my flash drive and they dont seem to work.  Any insight on this?
EDIT: strangely enough I unplugged my drives and reseated the connections and in windows setup I didnt get any errors; it didnt even ask for a driver but I installed them anyway.  I remember reading somewhere that if a SATA cable is bent in several ways it might cause problems like this.

SATA cables should never be bent sharply.  Use rounded bends that don't exert much pressure at the turn.

    Hi guys,
I've bought a new SATA MAXTOR HD but it doesn't work !!!
Somtimes it's not recognised in bios and the system doesn't boot.
Is it possible that the BIOS is too old.
May I flash the bios with the new version ?
    Best regards

Please excuse my english. I'm french.

WinXp is on my SATA disk and this HD is the only one in my PC (I've unplugged the IDE HDD). I've instaled WinXP on SATA disk and no previous OS was installed on it.
In the BIOS, SATA channel option is enabled and SATA type is set to Native IDE because AHCI position doesn't work on reboot (blue screen) but installation of OS is OK.
I've also try Legacy IDE and RAID position without success.

  • K9A Platinum Chipset Driver Issue in XP

hey,  found an old copy of XP Pro in my CD's.  Installed, but having some issues when I am trying to install chipset driver package.  With chipset package it starts up, gets to where you choose 'Express' or 'Custom' (with custom brings up the available installs) then pops up a dialog box saying "Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or OS.  Setup will now exit", then another saying "Setup was unable to complete the Installation.  Try to set up your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup"?  My VGA driver package from Sapphire (specifically for my cards installed just fine.

Will add this to my signature just so all know that I have updated my Windows.  That would probably be a great  !

  • K9A Platinum Bios Flashing Issue

Hey Guys I have this problem....I recently purchased an AMD X2 6400 CPU, in hopes of upgrading my current processor. As I understand it I need to flash my Bios in order to recognize the new CPU. Current Bios version is 1.3, When I use MSI live update to retrieve my correct bios version (1.8) download the file and run the program (via windows, my floppy drive doesn't work actually could never figure out the correct pins it plugged into on MB) my computer just freezes up upon initiation of the bios flash and I am forced to restart my computer without any problems.
I have done this a few times and the same problem occurs each time. I don't believe this MB has any Bios Protection in the CMOS that I need to Disable I have already checked. Any Thoughts what could be the problem???
Will I be able to run AMD X2 6400 CPU without version 1.8 bios update...Maybe?

There's the problem I am having. I have tried all BIOS updates and I still get these errors in my event viewer when using XP.
If I try to use Vista, I get a BSOD , BIOS is not Fully ACPI compliant.
So I have finally ruled out all hardware problems and this indeed appears to be a BIOS problem with this motherboard. I have contacted MSI Support and they say to check the FAQ, check the Manual, check the Forums. So here I am. Manual is no help, there is nothing in the FAQ and I have searched the forums. I think the only way this will be resolved is with another BIOS update from MSI for this Motherboard.
    Anyone have any input?
Edit: Additional Info. I've tried every BIOS version. I have tried setting BIOS to defaults. I have removed all but necessary hardware. I have upped my PSU. I have tested all memory with Vista's memory checker and memtest and it passes everything. I have tried everything I can think of and the error still persists.

Yes, but I can't see your RAM from here. It might not run at the speed/timings the memory controller/processor would like.
    Not sure I understand.
My RAM is GOOD. I have run it at every possible setting. I have run it at Auto, I have run it at factory recommended and everything in between. I still get ACPI error. Seeing my ram has nothing to do with it does it? Or am I missing what you are meaning?

  • P7N SLI Platinum - SATA Boot RAID issue

Hello Folks... I posted this issue on another thread (but, with different subject) as a follow up issue. I figured it might be better if this issue has it's own thread.. so, here it goes
Now, this is an upgrade for me.... from my previous MOBO. My boot drive in the old MOBO was RAIDed (RAID 0). Both old and new MOBO have nVidia RAID.. do, I don't think there is any compatibility issue here and the new MOBO detects the old RAID with  no issues too.
So, now, I will have to RAID my drives again and run Win XP repair. I was able to RAID my drives and all good... now, I went into Windows installation and did F6 to install NVIDIA Raid.... but, here is my problem, when the prompt asks me to input the floppy drive, and when I did it.... it re-prompts me to put the floppy drive again... I see that the floppy drive is read... but, for some reason it doesn't detect the files in there properly....  I downloaded nVidia C72+MCP55 SATA RAID / AHCI Driver (For floppy driver) for windows xp 32-bit and copied the sataraid folder contents into the floppy. For some reason the files are not detected at all...
Anybody experienced this problem? what could be the problem here?
