K9A2 CF Suspend to RAM not working?

Suspend to RAM worked for a little while but the last three restarts have failed.  I'm using beta BIOS 1.21 and 32-bit WinXP.  BIOS 1.1 never worked.  Is anyone else having problems?  I've set the BIOS to use S3 instead of the default S1 and tried enabling force GPU to POST on restart (or whatever it's called).

Yes, I installed the Phenom drivers from amd.com.
My old board had a nForce 570 Ultra chipset.
I want 64-bit Vista for the 64-bit part.  Only being able to use 3.25GB of my 4GB RAM annoys me.  I could put Fedora 8 on it but then I couldn't play games very well (yes, I know about Cedega).  Could run other stuff in a 32-bit WinXP VMWare Player instance though, and upgrade to 8GB RAM, hmm.

  • [Solved] Suspend to RAM not working.

I just installed Arch on an old box with an MSI K8T Neo motherboard and I can't get suspend to RAM working. On the BIOS I have two ACPI modes: S1/POS  and S3/STR. If I set it to S1 it does suspend but the hardware is not actually shut off (the fans, LEDs, and monitor backlight says on). With the S3 setting it does a complete shutdown so when I turn it back on it fresh boots instead of resuming. Suspend to both effectively hibernates when the BIOS setting is S3, with S1 it behaves just as suspend to disk. I've tried using systemd, pm-utils, and writing to /sys/power/state directly. All the same.
Just until last night I had Windows XP x64 installed and suspend was working just fine. I mostly use it as a file and printer server but I don't want it running all the time so I use Wake-on-Lan so it wakes up on demand and I'll be using a cron script (or whatever is called on systemd) to put it back to sleep after a while.
    Any suggestions?

Flashing the bios fixed the problem. I didn't do it before because the readme that comes with the bios firmware said it was the version I had but it's actually 5 major versions newer.

    I have a Dell Studio 1555 - ATI 4570 with stock kernel26_x86_64 (2.6.33.3-1), catalyst 10.3 and all is woking ok (hibernate/suspend/restore).
The "multibyte access to EC" patch is added to stock kernel and all related problems is gone for me.
It is a problem with restore from suspend (black screen) because of catalyst 10.4, but until that problem is solved I keep catalyst 10.3.
    I posted that problem here:

If you use xf86-video-ati driver, I don't know what is the problem.
When I tested open source ati driver to see if powersave features is added, suspend/resume was working for me, but no luck with powersave features, so I stay with catalyst driver)

in the future, i would definately use yaourt to upgrade since it displays better what is being updated and from where.
edit: if pm-suspend fails, check its log (/var/log/pm-suspend.log)

  • Systemd: Suspend and Hibernate not working

    Hi,
When I try to hibernate my Notebook using systemd with 'systemctl hibernate', it sometimes (from time to time it even works) fails with the error message "a dependency job for hibernate.target failed". In the journal I see the following:

    :x
Any ideas? Furthermore, during hibernate (when it works) my screen first gets black, the system comes back and only then it really hibernates.
Others suggest switching to linux-lts. Does that really make sense? Isn't this a systemd issue?
suspend sometimes fails to work either (screen gets blank, but system weaks up after a few seconds again):

    Thanks,

Thanks, but I do not call systemd-sleep manually, I just do the ordinary "systemctl hibernate".
Unfortunately, the error "A dependency job for hibernate.target failed. See 'journalctl -xn' for details" just happened again. Alas, I'm not able to debug it according to the manual (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/sy … emd_errors). When I try to get the log messages for the PID that causes hibernate.service to fail, I don't see anything suspicious in the logs:

  • 2 x 1GB 533/667 RAM not working in Satellite M40-289 notebook

    Hi all.
I have recently tried to upgrade the RAM in my Satellite M40-289 notebook.
The support site says it can take up to 2Gb of 533MHz RAM, in two 1GB sticks.
So, I bought two AData PC2 4200S 533/667MHz RAM sticks and installed them, but they do not work, either singly or together - the computer just goes into a beeping hard drive grinding death spiral until I remove the battery.
They do, however, work if I install one of them with the original stick. What I am figuring is that as they are 533/667 RAM sticks, on their own they are trying to run at their top speed, but with the factory stick installed too they are slowing down to its speed and running correctly.
So, I have increased my RAM from 512 to 1.5Gb for the price of 2Gb, and have a useless stick of laptop RAM.
Flashing the BIOS did not help this - the update which was posted on the Toshiba site last year for my notebook upgraded the BIOS from v1.2 to v1.2. Go figure.
Is there any way of forcing the RAM to run at the correct speed? Is there a hidden BIOS update that could solve my problem or is this likely to be something with the RAM?
    All help is gratefully received.
    kind regards
    Grey_Area

Hmm. The matched pair I bought said they would run at 533 or 667, but didn't run together. I only got one to work when laid next to the 512Mb module that came with the laptop and only runs at 533. Fortunately the reseller bought the RAM back from me so I am not out of pocket, but I think then I have to try and get hold of another 1Gb module that only runs at 533 if I want to have access to the full 2Gb max RAM that the laptop will take.
Thanks for you response, I did not know about the FSB thing though. Cheers. We'll have to see what I can get up to!
    kind regards
    GA

  • Hibernate and suspend to RAM dont work!

    Hi
whenever I try to suspend to RAM or hibernate my PC, they never get back! In both situations I get a screen full of garbage! Any ideas?
    My PC is
    K8N Neo2 Platinum
    A64 3500
    1GB RAM
    X800XT Ocuk Edition (unlocked X800Pro)

You may try different suspend states in the bios.
As for Hibernate, it should always work. Hibernate is more of a windows feature and has nothing to do with Suspend. Basicly windows writes the content of the ram to the harddrive and shutdowns completly. When booting it will load the saved state instead of the regular boot. In theory, even a 486 should support Hibernate.

  • Suspending service does not work and I keep getting an error message (South Korea)

Hi, I am currently back at home at South Korea during the summer and I cannot seem to suspend my service.
I continue to get this error message saying that suspending service is not available at the time and that I should try again later.
I got this message over the past 10 days and I cannot seem to suspend my service.
Since I am in South Korea, customer service live chat does not even work.
Is there anyway possible I could suspend my line before I get into a new billing cycle?

As the title says dual RAM is not working, when I put all 4 RAM sticks in their slots or even just two in dual channel mode my monitor will not respond and the screen is just black, can't even go to BIOs.
The BIOs settings are at 1333 MHz and 1.5 v, I've tried raising the volt and lowering it, anyone have any ideas?
I've tried the 1-3 and 2-4 slots with two 4gb sticks and it does not work, but the 1-2 and 2-4 works fine, have also tried all the individual sticks so none of them are faulty.

Please clarify. You mean a single stick works in 2 or 4 but not 2 and 4 together? So that means DIMM slot #3 is the only one that doesn't work at all? My suspicion is a grounding or short under the mainboard by an errant standoff, or the DIMM slot has some debris in it, or the slot is just plain faulty. Other possible is a pin problem in the CPU socket.

  • New RAM not working

I have a macbook pro 13 inch from mid 2010, with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz. I recently got a 1 TB WD Scorpio Blue for it that made a loud buzzing noise and after having the OS installed, wouldn't boot properly. I will be exchange this drive for a new one of the same type because I know it works since it worked in my sister's MBP mid 2009.
I also got some 2x4G of mushkin RAM (996644) for the computer. This is not apple certified but fits all the required specifications. The guy at the store told me that apple approved memory is the same thing just tested on a mac giving them an excuse to charge mor for it so this saved me six bucks. I tried installing both the hard drive and the ram and I got a POST error of one beep which means a RAM problem. I reinstalled the ram and instead of a POST error I got a black screen with no sounds. The LED was on. I put the old RAM in and it worked letting me install the OS. The hard drive had problems so I took it out, put the old one back in and the new RAM in. Same black screen.
Is there any solution here, or is the RAM defective and should I get a new chips?

If the old RAM works and the new does not, it makes no sense to keep it.  The two most reliable sources for MBP RAM are OWC and Crucial.
Sometimes inexpensive RAM does work but as you can see what you have is a lemon.  To a degree the sales person was correct, biut only that Apple does charge a lot for the RAM they sell.  I suggest spend a bit more and get the afore mentioned RAM.  If you search Amazon.com, the Crucial prices are quite good,
    The RAM specifications for a 2010 MBP are:   204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
    Ciao.

The machine has a 1 year warranty, book an appointment with your local Apple Store or AASP to have it looked at.
You can try doing a SMC reset however I don't think that is the solution.
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-• Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

Yes, that's normal and should work.
Looking at the module list maybe try stopping the video4linux before suspend.
To double check: boast, you rebuilt the kernel, yes?

  • Ram not working after 2.8 firmware update

Installed the 2.8 firmware update on my late '08 macbook pro and after restarting it, it would just beep 3 times and not start up. I pulled my 8 gig kingston ram out, repositioned back and still the same issue. Slapping in the original 4 gigs of apple ram, it will start up and work fine though. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix to get the 8 gigs working again on the machine?

That's the correct RAM for your computer. Those computers were originally spec'd to only use 4GB's max, a "secret" firmware update was found to let them use 8GB's max. I wonder if this firmware update set things back to 4GB's max. And before you ask, no you can't downgrade firmware.

  • K9N4 Ultra-F 2x 2gig ram not working?! (Resolved, indirectly)

So I can boot off one stick, either one works, but not both. With both sticks in the board the system wont even post.
    Ram is OCZ OCZ2G8004GK DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz
    Other info:
    CPU: AMD Athlon AM2 5200+
    Video: Geforce 8800 GTS
    PSU: Antec 450w Smart Power
I have not yet been able to flash the bios, as I cannot get the system to boot off the floppy drive either :(
No trouble booting off CD, so I will make a bootable CD if needed to flash the bios

The only suggestion i have been given so far is to install an older 'beta' BIOS version, which made no difference.  That was before the suggestions to disable spread spectrum etc.  So I just re-flashed to the old version (btw how many times can i flash this bios lol?). then went in and set all the memory timing and freq, disabled spread spectrum etc. and it still does not post with 2 sticks of memory in.  I am beginning to think that this motherboard was the wrong choice, as I was looking for a real nForce 500 chipset anyway and not a re-labled nForce4.
"The only suggestion i have been given so far is to install an older 'beta' BIOS version, which made no difference. "
which version exactly? the BIOS version which deserve attempt are those with NVMM changes, that means BIOS versions 1.3 & 1.4

if you got USB key, you can use our tools to flash your BIOS quick & safe:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
"(btw how many times can i flash this bios lol?)"
depend of BIOS chip, but usually can do up to 10 000 times if im correct.(told you that for statistic only, each BIOS update is a risky..)
"then went in and set all the memory timing and freq, disabled spread spectrum etc. and it still does not post with 2 sticks of memory in.  I am beginning to think that this motherboard was the wrong choice, as I was looking for a real nForce 500 chipset anyway and not a re-labled nForce4."
there is other reasons.. --> the memory used: if you switch and try another brand or another memory type its possible to be ok.(e.g. compatibility issue),
other thing you may have bad CPU, since memory controller is integrated in CPU... but can be bad DIMM slot too... PSU...(which Bas notice you before but as i can see you didn't tried his suggestion yet) or something else..

  • Upgrading MBP to 4GB RAM not working

I have a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.5 17" (08) (EMC 2199) which accordingly can be upgrade to 4GB RAM. The memory type required for the model is PC2-5300 DDR2. So I went and bought two 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 modules. When I installed both 2GB for a total of 4GB, the MBP won't boot or make a sound. If I install one of the original 1GB + new 2GB for a total of 3GB, the MBP boots. I have swapped the modules around from slot to another slot. I have tested both 2GB modules with one of the original 1GB module and it will boot. But when I put in both 2GB PC-6400 DDR2, the computer will not boot. Anyone have a suggestion on what I should do? Thank you.

Incorrect. If you do indeed have the Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 17" from early 2008, the maximum RAM it can hold is 3GB. Read the second table on http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1270#link5 (the table titled "+Refer to this table for the maximum+...").
