K9A2 PCI slots: What voltages?
I'm looking at adding a parallel port for legacy printer support, but don't know if this board is 3.3v only 3.3/5, or whether 5v only cards have any chance of working well in it.
Quote from: Bas on 08-April-08, 17:09:30
PCI = PCI, any card will work.
Only AGP had some difficulties with voltages.
That's the theory, but I have a single parallel / single serial board (v1.0) from SIIG that declines to play nice, and I'm just looking for compatability problems between PCI products and this mainboard. Consider the product review on the Rosewill RC-303 at Newegg by jcrwim:
http://tinyurl.com/23z8ad
He's not the only reviewer that references this as a 5v only card:
"Manufacturer Response:Dear Customer,
The Rosewill RC-303 works only with 5V PCI slot system. Please contact [email protected] for a possible replacement or refund. "We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you."
Now this isn't a system board problem, but rather an incompatibility. I'm just unsure of how to tell the difference between a "5v only" PCI slot. And some other kind.
I know that there are newer versions of similar boards out there that sell for between $45 and $60 at newegg, I just hate the idea of spending that big a percentage of the K9A2's original purchase price for a pretty modest added capability.

Satellite A500-1GH What is a empty PCI slot with JGPS sign
Almost a year ago I bought a Toshiba Satellite A500-1GH.
I cannot say that I am not satisfied with the computer or the company.
The problems that I had was the Display problem (stop working for seconds) which was software problem (updated nVidia 8.16.11.8875) and with the HDD which stop working but company changed with a new one.
Now I wanted to upgrade the second memory module from 2GB to 4GB so I can have 2x4GB, but when I opened the memory compartment, I saw next to them an empty PCI slot with the sign JGPS.
Does anybody know what that is?
And if yes what is the part number?
Thank you in advance.Hi mate
As far as I know JGPS is an GPS connector.
Possibly this connector would be shared by 3G miniPCI card.
As far as I know this Satellite A500-1GH has not been equipped with an 3G module and therefore the miniPCI slot is empty.
> And if yes what is the part number?
I don't know the part number but all parts can be ordered from local Toshiba ASP -
What does 64-bit 33 MHz mean for my PCI slots?
Hi all,
I was looking at my specs for my G4 and saw this under the PCI slot expansion section, 64-bit 33 MHz. What does it mean and what can I add to these slots to expand my Mac to the max? I know I can add video cards, controller cards, etc. What else?
Thanks
web dudeHi! PCI cards that are Mac compatible. Graphics cards, usb/firewire, gigabit ethernet cards, wireless cards and disk controller cards are the main ones. Tom

PCIE slots 1 & 3 & what we should get, X16+X16, or X16+X8?
Hello, I always look for new reports from customers that got this Mobo from New Egg like I did.
I just read a customers report who stated he has his GPU's in PCIE slots 1 & 3 & he is getting X16 + X8.
I dont know how he knows this, I wish I did. How can we tell? & is this true?. What slots should we use for 2 GPU's in SLI mode so we get X16 + X16?>>Posting Guide<<

What cards can I put into G4/350 Sawtooth PCI slots?
Hi,
I have a generic PC TV tuner card and some video and modem cards for PCI slots.
Can any of these cards be used in my Mac running either Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X 10.4?
Are there drivers for these PC cards in Mac OS X at all?
Just trying to fill these lots since I have these cards laying around...Yeah, I know ... the key is getting the Mac OS X drivers...
I'd love to get that TV tuner PCI card to work in my G4. heheh, but I just know most/many PC PCI cards dont have Mac drivers... d'oh... I'll Google search for the specific Tuner card name, etc..
It seems a waste to leave those PCI slots empty. heh. -
Upgrading Mac Pro (2009) from to NVIDIA Quadro 4000, what PCI slot to use ?
I am upgrading my Mac Pro (2009) from the Nvidia GT120 (stock) to the Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac. The GT120 was installed in the PCI Slot #1 and I would like to install the Nvidia Quadro 4000 in the PCI Slot #2, that way the Fan in the Graphics Card (Quadro 4000) will have better air circulation, is there any limitation or recommendation regarding the PCI slot to use ?, thanks a lot
I have an early Mac Pro 3,1.
The user manual I downloaded states:
Slot 1 PCI Express 2.0 16-lane
Slot 2 PCI Express 2.0 16-lane
So I'm assuming that means both slots 1 and 2 are the same and it doesn't matter which of my two graphics cards go in which slots?
Also, my second graphics card is a Quadro 4000 which is for Adobe Applications that use the CUDA engine. I don't have any monitors hooked up to it. -
What voltage from the motherboard?
In order to use FCP X, I had to upgrade my video graphics card from the original one that came with the Mac Pro (first generation, 2,1). I bought a EVGA 8800 GT board on ebay and also bought the necessary 6-pin power cable.
I installed the board in the same slot as the old card and turned the Mac on. Immediately there was a loud, high-pitched whistle which wouldn't go away until I turned off the computer and removed the card. Then I realized I had forgotten to install the 6-pin PCI power cable from the motherboard to the PCI-e card. I pulled the original card out again and installed the Geforce 8800 again, this time I plugged in the power cable to the 6-pin output on the motherboard (very hard to get to. Too bad you can't pull the fans out like you could with the G5.)
When I powered up again, the same loud whistle. I contacted the seller and he suggested that the whistle is a result of the card not getting power. Although he offered a refund, I told him I wold try again and would also test the cable and see what voltage (if any) I am getting out of it. He also suggested to try the other output on the motherboard.
My question is this: what voltage should I expect? What should I see as the output voltage? Also, is there a difference between the two outputs on the motherboard?
Thanks
B.you would need to use a card with Apple ROM though I don't know any success stories using an EVGA 8800GT.
It isn't a matter of power as long as you hooked up the two 6-pin power cables.
for FCP-X, the Apple ATI 5770 is probably more but works fine as is. $249. -
Does changing pci slots reassign irqs?
i've tried sticking my soundcard in every pci slot on my nforce mobo but the irq never changes. i thought it was supposed to. is this something to do with the mobo?
in the bios, there is an option to 'reserve' irqs. what's that about?
thxQuote
hi,
tried reinstall and managed to get up to 22 irqs (yay!), but pci slots don't correspond to the ones you listed. my graphics card agp is on irq 5 and sharing with something else. changing soundcard from pci 5 to 4 still doesn't change irq, it sits on 11.
what bios settings did you use? my configuration during reinstall:
high performance defaults
apic = enabled, 1.4
pnp os = no (maybe have to make this 'yes'?)
reset escd = no
escd = auto
windows xp pro
thanks
Something is definitely wrong with the install. Once APIC has been enabled no PCI device (other than system management) is supposed to use IRQ's below 15. Those IRQ's are left alone for "legacy" purposes.
BIOS 2.6 (2.4 is an option assuming you don't mind the PCI performance hit).

Also make sure to adjust your CPU/MEM/AGP and Clock Ratio setting to the one that correspond with your system.
Begin Windows 2000 install. When text stating, "Setup is inspecting your hardware" appears hit F5. Doing so several times is okay to make sure the keystroke is recognized. Choose "ACPI Uniprocessor" from the menu that appears shortly after.
As a side note, it would appear that installing SP2 before installing the chipset drivers can cause problems. Always NVIDIA chipset drivers first and then SP2.
The end result should turn out like so:

The results do vary some. My current install has chosen some different values than the one pictured above, but nothing radical. -
Can anyone help, in the bios under frequency/voltage control the first option is unused pci slot clock. The manual doesn’t explain what this does or whether it’s better to have it enabled/disabled. Can anyone help?
Hi
It is just a check on unused PCI slots, if enabled the post screens sometimes show Network boot page or other items that are disabled, I always have it disabled for a cleaner boot. If you were using an unsupported PCI card, it may be useful, else leave it disabled.
cheers

K8N Diamond Plus. Which PCI slot for Adaptec 39320
Hi
I understand the Orange slot is not sharing resources with the other PCI slots.
Would this be best for my RAID card (its a 64bit RAID card going into a 32bit slot) or would it not work at all?
thanks
CharkerCharker,
You will have to contact MSI Tech Support on that one, that question has crossed my mind to whether that is a full function PCI slot or not. It is the only open PCI slot if you have a Graphics Card in the Secondary x16 slot. If it is full function PCI slot, the only thing I know of that stop you using your 64-bit Controller in it are two Caps that may get in the way of the card over hang.
Burmo,
You should know your subject before you make comments like that on the Forum. Most all PCI 64-bit I/O cards will auto sense the slot type they are plugged into and adjust the interface to fit the slot capabilities. Only problems using a 64-bit PCI card in a 32-bit PCI slot is you loss interface bandwidth and there maybe physical components mounted behind the 32-bit slot that will not allow the PCI 64-bit card to be inserted.
Luckily I have communicated with Charker enough, that I do not think you statement would have steed him wrong, but someone with a low level of computer knowledge, you could have cost him/her a lot of money. Those Controller cards he is talking about cost two or three times what the Diamond Plus motherboard costs. Next time research you answers before you make it, if you not sure and if you do not know do not comment.
Roger
When submitting a problem, include a complete list of your system components; include part numbers, all Power Supply Voltages, and their output ratings. It is almost impossible to estimate what your problem is without knowing something about it. -
PCI slot in Thinkpad Dock II unusable
Hello, I have a Thinkpad a22m 2628-S1U which can be used with the Thinkpad Dock II. To avoid feeling tempted to buy a new laptop I bought that dock as well as an ATI Radeon x1550 to put in its PCI slot. These items were said to be compatible on http://thinkwiki.org the Linux thinkpad wiki.
Now that I've tried it out, I'm starting to think the contributors to that site were windows users who didn't read the topic. Starting up docked gave the following lspci output (notice there's no radeon card):

For comparison, here's what my lspci looks like undocked:

00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge (rev 03)

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
So a few parts of the dock are getting detected but not the most important parts. The error that I think is related to the absence of the graphics card appears in dmesg. Look for the part about "cannot allocate resource region":

I've tried multiple options in the BIOS. You can select AGP or PCI as the card for the root display device. The default is PCI so if there's a docked PCI card at POST, the BIOS will use that for the root display device... otherwise it will use the built in card. You can also select the root display device as LCD or CRT or both. The default is CRT so if there is an external monitor that's where the bootloader menu and such will appear, otherwise the laptop's own display gets used. Even if I've understood these incorrectly, all combinations yield a PCI video card that is not detected by lspci.
I've also tried loading the module dock right after thinkpad_acpi. It loads and appears in lsmod but it doesn't help the situation at all. It also doesn't add a dock file to /proc/acpi/ibm. I also tried passing pci=routirq to the kernel, whatever that does and I've tried changing the four PCI related IRQ numbers in the BIOS and this has not helped.I did upgrade the kernel yesterday and it caused the syntax of dmesg to change somewhat. Here is a docked dmesg from 2.6.27:

The strangest thing has also happened recently. The laptop refuses to use its own display when starting up in the dock unless an external monitor is plugged in. If a CRT is plugged in, the docked laptop starts up and shows the splash screen on its LCD. If no CRT is plugged in, turning on the docked laptop results in a blank screen. This might have happened because I fiddled with the BIOS which would make alot of sense but resetting the BIOS to default configuration hasn't fixed the problem. I also could have broken a pin but the last thing I remember doing before this happened is running cat /sys/module/snd_ac97_codec/parameters/power_save. It's one of those untouchable virtual files that causes a kernel oops when I try to read it sometimes. I have no idea how this would break the dock but it doesn't matter. Even if using the dock requires some external monitor jazz, I still want the card to be detected and it isn't.
Sorry to bombard you with obscure information but I don't know where else to turn. I've asked on the thinkpad mailing list and IRC channel to no response and I've seen one other "knowledgeable person" mention these errors on the LKML. I will subscribe to that and ask him too. I'm just very surprised... this gave me the impression that what I wanted to do would work trivially and automatically on Linux and now I'm finding that it's broken for me and possibly every other Linux user. I will seek out thinkpad users from around here with all types of models and distros and see if they have any luck. So far Arch, Arch install CD and an ancient Ubuntu install CD don't work here. If anyone has this and can test it or can decipher some ideas from the posted output (new kernel parameters, new kernel config flags, new udev rules, new modules?) I'd really appreciate it. -
Z97 Gaming 5 PCIe slots empty?
New build and mobo has never detected any graphics cards. I have flashed the bios and now have latest versions of bios (1.9) and me (9.1.25.1005), cleared CMOS and reset bios defaults but still no joy, PCIe slots still show as empty.
Anyone else had this issue?have you done this? if yes what are the results?

have you attached all power cables to the video card?
and have you connected monitor cable to it? -
Won't really see a video card in the PCI slots
I have a G4 MDD 1.23 GHz. I have a 32 MB video card in the AGP slot, but I also have 2 PCI 128 MB video cards lying around.
Every time I try to throw a PCI video card in, though, I have problems. The image is only 640 x 480 grayscale, nothing else. I tried to change the settings, but those are the only options.
I have a 3DFX Voodoo 2 and a TwinTurbo 128. Do I need drivers? Does the MDD not support video cards in the PCI slots? What's wrong with this picture? For what it's worth, here's a few quotes:
[IX Micro Twin Turbo 128 video card, and I understand that OS X does not like that particular card|http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg43189.html]
[The TwinTurbo cards are no longer supported by OS X (10.3).|http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-30258.html]
[Just think of this along the lines of 3dfx's unsupport for the Voodoo3 on Macs.|http://www.insidemacgames.com/news/story.php?ArticleID=4213]
[Voodoo is not supported with OSX...but forget it for Jaguar and most other versions|http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02720 .html] -
X121e, other uses for WWAN mini PCIe slot?
Does anyone know whether the mini PCIe slot in the X121e that the optional WWAN card goes in can be used for other cards?
I'm aware of the whitelist, which had been suggested may only apply to wireless devices (e.g. WLAN and WWAN) - although I'm not sure whether that's certain (i.e. doesn't apply for non-wireless devices).
I've heard some people have tried mSATA devices in this slot with no success (which isn't suprising as whilst mini PCIe is physically compatible with mSATA it isn't electrically, and so you need mSATA support in the hardware). However I've been wondering about mini PCIe SSD cards and whether they would work. I've heard that they're not brilliant when compared to mSATA devices - however I can't afford to get a large SSD for this machine, and in general, people don't need to store all their MP3/videos on SSD, as the best benefit comes with the OS and applications being stored on the SSD, with user data being fine on an HDD. My using a mini PCIe SSD, I could potentially put the OS etc onto a cheaper/smaller SSD, with the hard drive for 'data'.
Has anyone tried this, or any other non-wireless mini PCIe devices in the X121e?
ThanksMight be of interest to you that I tried a half mini pcie micro sd card reader in my X301. It would allow 64gb if it worked. However I got an error message on boot up - can't remember exactly what it was. Other than that the only other option was the intel turbo memory which was of little benefit to me.

How to reconfigure Cards installed in PCI slots
Hi All
My customer has OEL linux. installed on his HP DL380 G7 server. It has 4 Emulex LPe11002 dual port cards installed. The cards in PCI slot 3 and 5 are needed for network connection.
So he needs to configure the cards in PCI slot 3 and 5 to be used for the network using port 0 on the cards.
Any guidance help would be appreciated.
Thanksthose are HBA FC cards
What protocol your costumer want to have on those cards?
IPoFC ?if yes, I haven't done my self, how ever, I did read about time ago, and looks like due the costs of the hardware/switch, all the progress went to 10GE/24GE and infini band.
not sure if IPoFC is something in the normal skill set of a linux sysadmin.
What's the speed of those FC cards and switches?
Alvaro
