K9A2 Platinum 9950 and AMD overdrive

Ive been gathering overclocking info for ages now and Ive never really tried much. Ive just upgraded to the AM2+ platform from my old 939 box. Ive just discovered the AMD overdrive utility and have been playing with it in novice mode. I slid the bar notch by notch until I reached level 10, the highest in novice mode. It really didnt do much it seems, now my 2.6ghz cpu is running at a blazing 2665.36 after using the novice mode to max  . Looks like all its done is raise the PCIe clock to 110, HT ref. clock to 205 and the memory clock to 410. Nice little baby steps . It passed the stability test no sweat. What I was wondering was how effective is the auto clock feature? Does it overclock until it finds a max oc or can you stop the process when you are satisfied with the progress (example whan it reaches 2.8 can I just stop it and test the stability?). How is the utility overall? I know its better to do it in the BIOS but for a novice like me it seems like a safer option.

It's the BIOS. Just tested it with beta v1.21 and gave me the 700 chipset message too. Also with v2.10.
With BIOS v1.1 it gave me the unsigned driver message.
After booting Vista X64 with the option F8 and then "Don't check for unsigned drivers" Overdrive starts.
And showed to be a very nice tool.
I'm sorry for the above post.
I was WRONG...
With the K9A2 CF use: Overdrive from the MSI download page
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=6176&type=utility
Only still the unsigned driver thing so boot Vista X64 with the option F8 and then "Don't check for unsigned drivers".
The chipset shows as RD790

  • K9A2 Platinum Audio and Video Driver problems.

I put together my new rig last night and am having a lot of problems with drivers.  The rig installed windows XP SP2 in about 10 minutes though
    Rig:
    MSI K9A2 Platinum Bios 1.3
    Phenom 9850 BE
    G.SKILL 1066 5-5-5-15 2T
    MSI HD 3870 OC
    WD Raptor
    CoolerMaster 550watt
Several fans to keep cool air flowing.
My problem is that I can not find good audio or video drivers.  I started by trying the audio drivers included with the board, but they would not complete the install.  I ended up downloading audio drivers from the MSI site, however they also would not install with the "#-0001" error message.  I followed the instructions on the forum: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=115396.msg866810#msg866810 including installing the MS HD Audio Driver Hotfix but still cannot get sound working.
To further complicate my problem the 3870 has HD onboard, which makes a second instance of Microsoft UAA HD Audio driver in the device manager, and also tries to find drivers for bits of it's audio hardware.
Currently I have disabled on-board audio completely through the bios, and now everytime I boot-up I get new hardware found for UAA HD Audio, and also some Media interface.  Clearly this is the HD on the 3870, however I can't seem to get drivers installed that will agree with the hardware thus the message continue to pop-up!
Does anyone have suggestions or similar experiences?

    Thanks for the links.
The standard AMD ATI Drivers + South Bridge chipset drivers worked flawlessly.  I've made a clean run through 3dmark06 so i feel good about them.
    As for the audio.
I've worked through both of those suggestions but haven't gotten anywhere.  A few times I have been able to get the drivers to install without the "error code -0001" message, but that doesn't give me sound.  Under device manager I still end up with yellow exclamations.  It seems no matter what I disable or try to do nothing works.  I've tried updating drivers manually like was explained in the first link, but when the update is complete I get the messages lile: "There was a problem installing this device  MEDIA  An error occured...  The data is invalid"
Does anyone know if this indicates a hardware of driver problem?

Firstly thanks for the quick reply!
In my experience PCI-E speeds effect stability, sometimes raising just past 100MHz actually increases stability.
AMD OverDrive seems to have a few limits (unless its user error) whereby it limits the voltage I can use, max of 1.35 which isn't enough. I take it the OverDrive does allow me to alter HT speeds however?
Is that bios tested? If I flash and it fails do I have the option to flash back to the old one? I.e. I don't want to kill my mobo! :D
    Thanks in advance.
" I take it the OverDrive does allow me to alter HT speeds however?"
simply install it and go and see
"Is that bios tested? If I flash and it fails do I have the option to flash back to the old one? I.e. I don't want to kill my mobo! :D"
    "Is that bios tested?"
some users is using it, without problems if you asking that.
"If I flash and it fails do I have the option to flash back to the old one? I.e. I don't want to kill my mobo! :D"
maybe yes, maybe no.. BIOS flashing is always risky, if you decide to use it do it at own risk.
else just be patient and wait for official version.

  • K9A2 Platinum - ColdBoot and S3 Resume Lockups

I have basically 2 Problems with my K9A2 Platinum. Beside those, my system runs very fine.
    1) Randomly when cold booting, the PC freezes, before getting even to the MSI full screen logo. Using the reset button works and lets the PC boot just fine. The screens just stay blank and in Standby mode, there are no beeps or whatsoever
    2) Randomly from resuming from S3 Mode, it will lockup, too. Screens stay blank and I have to reset the PC.
I also noticed that the ODDs are taking very long to be detected. Sometimes longer than at other times. In another forum someone mentioned having a similar problem and he fixed it by disconnecting all of his IDE optical disc drives.
I also tried to flash BIOS v1.2 but it didn't help, plus I got a worse performing system due to the TLB Bug-Fix for the Phenom.
    Any ideas!?

Do you use system stock settings?
Have you done Clear CMOS with power cord removed?
Do a memory check with Memtest86
Do you have any USB device attached?
Nothing is overclocked, all stock settings.
I have done various CMOS clears, tried Optimized, Fail Safe BIOS Settings. Tried various custom settings. Raised Memory Voltage to 1.9V (Default 1.8V according to Team)
I have connected a USB mouse and a multi card reader directly to the board. Connected via a USB HUB is a scanner, external HDD, USB keyboard (actually the wireless stick for the keyboard). Via another USB theres a gamepad and a Joystick connected. Both Hubs and the external HDD have their own power supplys.

    Two other ideas:
    - PSU isn't enough from cold.
    - You didn't do a reinstallation of Windows after a major hardware change, like motherboard or processor.
The PSU is brand new, I bought it, because I had the same idea. Had the same problems with my old Enermax 460 Watt PSU
Under Windows there's everything just fine. As I said, whenever it comes on correctly, everything is just fine. No unstable system or whatsoever.

Check IDE devices for properly jumper configuration.(disconnect them one by one if its necessary)
    Try without maxtor drive too.
I will try that, tomorrow/later this day. But shouldn't they don't even get recognized when not correctly jumpered!? I can burn DVDs/CDs without problems (LG) and play games/watch DVDs without problems (Samsung)
I'm downloading memtest86+ at the moment to check the ram.
    /*Edit:
IDE optical drives are correctly jumpered as Master respectively Slave.

  • FSB OCing kills suspend and AMD Overdrive

Using the FSB OC switch on my motherboard to increase the FSB 10% works. However my PC wont suspend properly now and when I try to run AMD's Overdrive software, it crashes. Any thoughts?
    Brad

I've never been keen on OC'ing using switches.
The only advice I have for you is to set it back to default and change the FSB in the BIOS instead, leaving everything else as is. See how you go. Even if you bump it by just a few MHZ, see what happens.
You tend to get far more fine tuning out of the BIOS as well, and can push things right to the limit.

  • K9A2 Platinum - Install to RAID - Memory issue

    Hello all,
    I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard with a AMD Phenom 9950 BLACK EDITION Agena 2.6GHz Socket AM2+ 140W Quad-Core Processor Model HD995ZFAGHBOX.
I have (2) OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P10664GK, installed for a total of 8G, but can not get it to work at 1066, is this even possible?  The system runs fine at 800, but keeps getting BSoD when switched to 1066.  The timings from OCZ are EPP 5-5-5-18 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS), and I have played with the voltages in the range of 2.1 - 2.2V.  Power should not be a problem as I have a COOLMAX CUQ-1200B 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply.  Anyone have any suggestions?

It won't run 1066 with all four sticks. Simple as this you already found the solution either you have 8 gigs and ddr2-800 or 4gigs at 1066.

  • MSI k9a2 platinum trouble

I came home from work yesterday after installing a vista update on shutdown. turned the computer on and walked away. came back and it was blank everything was seemingly on but nothing on the screen. So I had to do a hard reset. Took a few times but finally I got a screen telling me that something on the north bridge I believe (bad recollection of what was on there I was tired and angry) failed due to overclocking... now I had tried to overclock this motherboard a LONG time ago. results were undesirable so I reset it back to factory defaults and uninstalled the overclocking software that came with it. now I was just playing some games and had a critical error (no time to read it) that resulted in the PC not booting up at all no beep no post just turns on everything spins but it seems like it is in a perpetual loop of restarts.. any and all help would be great. Email me if you know how to fix it or if you know for sure I am screwed.
seems like just the video card is resetting nothing else slows and speed up besides that

  • Msi K9a2 platinum with memory

    Dear,
I have bought a MSI K9a2 platinum with a AMD Phenom 9600. I have placed 2 sets of these memory G.E.I.L GX22GB6400UDC4. In the manual they said that I have to change the memory settings in the bios to run at 4-4-4-12.
When I look in the bios, I see a lot of memory settings to change. Which one do I need to change to run at these settings?
    Thanks,
    Rafael

    1. If 40 represents tRC (which it probably does not): it's too high. Set this value to Auto in your BIOS, and set tRC to 20 or 21.
    2. You can't, there isn't any setting for it. But since you have four sticks of memory that fill up all of the DIMMs, there is no other option than to run it in dual channel. Software might detect it as single channel because of the Unganged Mode setting, which creates two separate 64 bit channels (but is obviously still dual channel)...

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum Phenom 9550 slow as hell

    hi guyz
i just recently put 2gether a new rig at long last, not as grand as some i've seen on AMDzone but its a good start. i was using an old Athlon XP which is far too slow to run pinnacle 12 (video editing s/w) hence the new upgrade. after purchasing the phenom 9550 i was expecting to fly, i mean compared to my Athlon who wldn't. i stuck with XP although i play games vista is too system hungrey so i've heard. anywayz after getting my rig up installing the latest sp3, m/b drivers, bios upgrade the whole works, the performance was almost the same as my Athlon which really freak me out. i splash so much on the new rig n got my old Athlon back
i've chk on AMDzone n haven't really got any sold solution. i've email to AMD n they replied telling me all the things a newbee wld get confused on. even during boot up is slow, i remove all those fancy interface (graphics) stop all those unwanted staff in services n startup is very minimal. when i start pinnacle for example its real slow. i saw on youtube a guy who showedoff his 9550 n it was flying nothing like mine. i wld appreciate if any wld has any suggestion as to what might b my problem...

prince_terry ,this was my first impression too, in the first month.
After i installed all drivers in the proper order  ,after i assured the RAM is in dual channel ,after i have put the SATA HDD at SATA 1 specs (to make the computer boot up faster ),after i updated to latest BIOS -es ( the video and mobo) ,the computer started to be what it should have been.
Make sure you have good drivers for the SB 600 ( if your HDD is conected to its SATA ports) ,in XP SP 3 you should use older drivers ,that are not available on the MSI website at this moment (there were available somewhere in the 2008 spring-summer).The package available now doesnt have the PATA drivers(IDE emulation) and this may show poor performance for the drive in games(choppyness).
On the other hand the 9550 is inferior, in my opinion ,to a X2 6400+.Sure 6400+ is only dual core ,but there is a lot of software that doesnt know what a quad is.
Also make sure you disable Cool and Quiet in BIOS options and HPET option (recomended OFF for XP) and in On Chip SATA BIOS section under Integrated Peripherals make sure PCI IDE Busmaster option is on (a legacy option that will speed up Windows installation for ex.).
Also a poor PSU with low voltages may lead to same poor performance, check the voltages (with a digital multimeter) and make sure they are in spec.
do u hv any good location for the SB600 that i can download from. all my bio update r from MSI website. C&Q has been disable will look into the rest n let u knw the outcome. thanks

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum + ocz 1066 runs 800mhz?!?

Ive tried all i can do to get this memory to run at proper speeds. I updated the bios to the most current version 1.6. I tried setting the voltage and latency settings in there manually. The ratio button does not give me a option higher that 1:2. It makes the memory run at 800mhz. Im not the first to have this problem as i have googled and found many with the same problem yet i haven't come across a solution that helps me.

Might want to help out a provider of your motherboards from receiving future negative feedback and have them correct the way they display the memory standard. To those that don't research a board from the providers site. I feel deceived and i don't think i will use a msi product ever again. But thats all talk and if the price is right i might. Im just a little pissed off about this. Know of anything that can get it to 1066? why does it only work with am2+?
"Might want to help out a provider of your motherboards from receiving future negative feedback and have them correct the way they display the memory standard."
As you can see its stated clear at MSI Web ==> http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1332
"I feel deceived and i don't think i will use a msi product ever again. But thats all talk and if the price is right i might. Im just a little pissed off about this."
That's pure no sense. As i already told you that has nothing to do with the mainboard.
Newegg is not MSI problem, but there is listed correctly too. Board can support 1066 memory sticks.
As you can see you are currently use 1066 memory sticks without problem,
at what frequency will they run that's another story and do not depend from the mainboard, but from the CPU used.
"Know of anything that can get it to 1066? why does it only work with am2+?"
Because the CPU works in that way. Memory controller integrated in the CPU can works at 800 max.
For 1066, you need latest AM2+ generation CPU which memory controller support 1066.
For more info you can ask AMD or to read AMD Tech docs.

  • K9A2 Platinum + 2xATI 3870 CF + x8 PCI-E Adaptec Raid 5405?

I have a K9A2 Platinum mainboard and 2x Ati HD3870 videocards (Crossfire-X). Would a x8 PCI-E Adaptec Raid 5405 card work in one of the remaining x16 PCI-E slots? Or are those x16 PCI-E slots reserved for videocards only?
The mainboard manual says: "When 4 PCI Express x16 slots are all installed, the PCIE x 16 lanes will auto arrange form x16/ x0/ x16/ x0 to x8/ x8/ x8/ x8". Does this mean if i install 2 videocards, the other 2 x16 PCI-E slots will be disabled?

And the card you mention will not have a higher speed because it is in a fast lane.

  • K9A2 Platinum Cannot Use RAID and PCI IDE card [SOLVED]

    Hello,
I am trying to do the following set-up on my K9A2 Platinum, using a Phenom 9600 processor:
    - 2xSATA2 250GB Seagate drives on Promise T3 SATA controller (to be used as RAID 1 devices)
    - 1xSATA DVD-RW on Sb600
    - 2xIDE DVD-RW on onboard IDE
    - One PCI HiPoint RocketRAID ATA100 card (operating in IDE mode) on PCI slot 2 with 1xIDE 40GB hard disk (my Linux partition)
On the BIOS I have enabled the Extra RAID function, in order to enable Promise to work as RAID.
    The system POSTs as follows:
    - Initial detection (CPU, RAM e.tc)
    - RocketRAID gets initialized and detects the IDE disk attached (40GB)
    - Promise RAID tries to detect the disks (the RAID array) and the whole system hangs.
I've tried to relocate the two SATA hard disks to the SB600 controller (SATA 1&2 ports), but the same thing happens (after changing the BIOS to disable extra RAID function and enable RAID mode on onboard SATA SB600). The only way to POST the machine, is to remove the RocketRAID PCI card, but this way I can no longer boot my Linux disk.
Using BIOS 1.2 and 1.3beta 2 (sent to me by MSI support).
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the replies.
Now, I'm going to surprise you: I managed to make both cards (the Promise and HighPoint) work together! Read how...
Somehow, I got the impression that the problems I had were either caused by the BIOS or the hard disks (the SATA ones). I flashed the motherboard back to the official 1.2, doing a complete BIOS reset (removed the battery) and tried again without the RocketRAID card installed. This time, the Promise BIOS (which btw is an earlier version from the one the 1.3b2 BIOS had) reported that the one SATA drive was malfunctioning (and it was a sealed brand-new Seagate). Removed the drive, installed it on SB600 and SeaTools indeed reported that it was failing (it didn't manage to pass even the quick test...).
Now I was curious: could it be that this - together with the beta BIOS - was the cause of my problems? I installed the other SATA disk to Promise T3 (the red socket) and the controller detected it, but all I could do is to set it up as a RAID 0 array (which pretty much does nothing). Next, I installed the RocketRAID also together with the IDE Linux disk and the system detected both disks; I can boot Linux fine and enter both the RocketRAID BIOS and Promise T3 BIOS. I can delete and recreate the array in Promise T3 as I please, but due to the fact that I only have one SATA disk now, I get limited options (RAID 0 and JBOD).
Is it safe to assume that since the Promise BIOS is working with the RocketRAID installed, that my SATA RAID controller is working?
Tomorrow, I shall return the SATA drive to the store I bought it and get a replacement, so that I can set up my RAID 1.
The plan is to have Linux boot from the IDE (I've never managed to set up a Linux disk to boot from RAID) where Windows Server 2003 will boot from RAID.
Will keep you posted about the progress I make.
BTW Bas, I'm sorry I couldn't make out much of your brainstorming
Regarding the Promise controller: the board has a Promise chip right above the SATA ports, which has the number 42819 on it. I can also verify that both SB600 RAID and Promise T3 RAID have EXACTLY the same BIOS menu interface (the only differences are the texts "ATi SB600" and "Promise T3" on the menus, plus that the SB600 has also an option to securely erase the drives which Promise does not have). Are you suggesting that the SB600 RAID is actually the Promise T3? I do not know if it would be possible to have BOTH RAID controllers (SB600 and T3) working at the same time (I do not have enough disks to try...).
