K9A2 Platinum and 4 Memory Modules

Hey gang, the saga continues.
BIOS 1.2
With Vista Enterprise x64 SP1 RC and 4x DDR2-800 OCZ modules (see my signature) my system will POST but not boot properly (even in safe mode!) at either 3-4-4-15-2T-2.4V or at 5-5-5-15-2T-2.4V.  It gets almost to the point where it wants to bring up the vista logo after loading all the drivers however then the screen resets to "no signal" and the system reboots from POST.
I removed 2 of the memory modules, leaving 2 in the slots closest to the CPU.  At 3-4-4-15-2T-2.4V (which is what the memory is rated for) the ATI kernel driver gets a page fault during load, blue screen, memory dump.  However at 5-5-5-15-2T-2.4V the system is stable.  I expected 2 memory modules to work at the rated speed of the memory.  I expected 4 memory modules to work at looser timings.  I'll try 5-5-5-18-2T-2.4V with 4 modules just to see.
I'm getting 8GB/s throughput in Sandra XII at 5-5-5-15-2T-2.4V.
With BIOS P.0D I was getting 9.5GB/s at 5-5-5-18-2T-2.3V with the mushkin XP8500.
Maybe P.0D doesn't have the erratum in it, and tighter memory controller timings.
Oh and the Sandra disk benchmark test posted a RAID0 score of 140.5 MB/s throughput.  WD360JD was 55 MB/s.  I need to run a better benchmark though.  I bought EVEREST Personal Ultimate, maybe it'll have something more useful in it.  I can tell you the EVEREST benchmarks for memory performance on my system absolutely suck.  They're pinning it around midrange in all the tests. :<  I cannot run HDTach on this system because it doesn't recognize me as an Administrator (although I am one).
I have my final water cooling parts arriving on Wednesday - an inline temperature sensor which will hang right off the egress on the video card stack, for accurate CPU + video card heat levels on the liquid for the fan control.
At idle this system keeps the CPU at 99F temp, HD at 105F (I removed the front case fan, it would probably be cooler with it in there, but slightly noisier).  Memory therefore is probably around 102F.  I haven't gotten to stress testing yet because of the stability issues.
I also am trying Catalyst 8.1 beta to see if CrossFireX will work.
** At least the system is POSTing BOOTing **

AaronYuri: Using Vista Enterprise x64 SP1 RC, no fixes come up through Windows Update, I assume I have everything... point me to something that wouldn't be in the service pack RC?
Quad: So you think with an X2 CPU this wouldn't be a problem, but the Phenom is inferior?
Russ: I'm using fixed memory voltage as specified in the test.  2.4V and 2.1V.  Both of which should have worked.  Since I can do DDR2-800 2x 3-4-4-15-1T-2.4V stable (running Prime95 now...), I would expect to be able to do DDR2-533 5-5-5-18-2T-2.1V.  Also this board originally posted with the memory at DDR2-1066 5-7-7-20-2T-2.4V so I know the memory isn't the issue.
One additional comment I would like to add to this discussion is that with all 4 memory modules loaded I can install the Vista operating system.  It is only after I reboot, after the initial install, that it won't complete the boot cycle any longer.  So the install boot works (which is probably a limited kernel?) but the real thing won't work.
As for DDR2-400 I might give it a try but I have to say if that's the only way I could do 4gb memory, I wouldn't do it.
Hello, I have the SAME sort of problems except with the K9A Platinum
Here is the fix/update they are talking about
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777/en-us
I have applied it and did not work for me. You are getting a BSOD likely. Boot to 2gb, go to System Settings under Control Panel. Click Advanced Setting on the left. Then click Settings button under Startup and recovery. UN-check automatically restart. You may then see the BSOD when you try booting with 4gb again.
I a using latest bios on my MSIK9A and I still cannot boot Windows to 4gb.
I have read thru all 20 pages here:
http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?postid=1292561&siteid=17&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=10
Even though I do not run 64bit, this still seems to be a very common problem with running 4gb on 32bit and 64bit. It is not just a Windows problem. I have read Linux has exhibited this as well.
I even did a clean install of Vista on a spare drive last night with only 2gb installed. I then updated all drivers in order and then applied MS Hotfix I linked to above. I shutdown, put in all 4gb and BAM!! same exact BSOD. I have tried setting timings to many different settings. I have tried all "suggested fixes" to no avail. All 4gb of Memory all passes memtest86 v1.7 scans. Ran 17 passes overnight and all passed.

  • Msi K9a2 platinum with memory

    Dear,
I have bought a MSI K9a2 platinum with a AMD Phenom 9600. I have placed 2 sets of these memory G.E.I.L GX22GB6400UDC4. In the manual they said that I have to change the memory settings in the bios to run at 4-4-4-12.
When I look in the bios, I see a lot of memory settings to change. Which one do I need to change to run at these settings?
    Thanks,
    Rafael

    1. If 40 represents tRC (which it probably does not): it's too high. Set this value to Auto in your BIOS, and set tRC to 20 or 21.
    2. You can't, there isn't any setting for it. But since you have four sticks of memory that fill up all of the DIMMs, there is no other option than to run it in dual channel. Software might detect it as single channel because of the Unganged Mode setting, which creates two separate 64 bit channels (but is obviously still dual channel)...

  • MSI 785GM-E51 and memory modules problems

Could anyone help me with one problem. I have motherboard MSI 785GM-E51 and 4 memory modules GOODRAM GR 1333D364L9/2G. But when I'm inserting ALL modules my system not starting (even POST procedure). So working variants - when I'm inserting:
    - one module in first (boot) slot
    or
    - they inserted in first and third memory slots
    Any ideas?

It is not motherboard problem, but processor itself - I have AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3,4 Ghz Core Revision C2 and this revision (according to the article: http://www.fcenter.ru/online.shtml?articles/hardware/processors/27650#02) has problems with support memory modules DDR3-1333 Mhz more than 2 modules. Conclusion - either adjust BIOS settings concerning memory timings and memory controller voltage or replace this kind of processor with the same type but with core revision C3

  • Pavilion g6 laptop with start-up and memory module issue + beeping

My laptop is a g6-1c58dx. I was(?) having problems with my cooling fan, so I went about disassembling it to get into the fan to clean the fan out. So far, so good. I think I'm having some kind of problem putting the memory module back in now though. I'm not positive which side of the memory module was facing up when I took it out and I forgot which of the two slots it was in. However, I've tried with both sides in both slots and still no dice. Every time I hit the power button, the capslock button blinks, the screen doesn't turn on and I get three long beeps followed by two short beeps. I've been trying to find a good picture of the memory module in the laptop some place online to see if I'm doing something wrong, but I haven't been able to find a good enough one. I went digging into part of the support rescources here that mentioned having some video and such which might be related to my problem, but I couldn't find g6, only g1, g2, and g3. So, it's very late here. I've been working on this all night. Could anybody tell me what I need to do to end the maddness?

No, that is not what I said. VistaX64 supports a lot of memory. Remember you have also a lot of memory on the video card. Your configuration might not, if the combination of the four sticks - of two different models - makes the system freeze.
Mixing memory is never good because it makes things harder for the processor (and it's memory controller).
You could still try reducing the speed of the memory, and/or increase the memory voltage a little bit.
I have 4 same memory moduls. I didn't mix modules. I just say, that same happens with my OLD 4 memory moduls(worked fine in my old motherboard Asus m2n-e sli), and with my new 4(exact same) modules.
Memory is on default speed....btw. These memory modules are DDR2-1066, but running on 800. Where should I lower speed more?

  • DKA790GX Platinum and memory issues

I've had my dka790gx platinum now for approximately 2 weeks.
    Build is as follows
    DKA790GX-Plat - bios v1.6
    AMD Phenom II X4 940
    2 x 2gb Corsair Dominator 1066 (5-5-5-15 @ 2.1)
    Gigabyte HD 4870x2
    Creative X-Fi Extreme GF-PS
    Tagan 900BZ
It has been working fine but all off a sudden I started getting the dreaded BSOD in vista 'apc_index_mismatch' and 'memory_management' - I've ran memtest and on the first test @ 45% the system reboots with 4gb of memory in. This happens whether it is running @ 800mhz or 1066mhz, I've also tried 4 x 1gb of corsair xms2 ddr 800mhz and get actually the same issue. If I run 2gb of memory then all tests are ran without any problems and again this is for both the dominator memory running @ 800 and 1066mhz, and also the xms2 memory.
I've then ran another test using the 2 x 1gb xms2 + 2 x 512mb xms2 (all ddr2 800) to give total of 3gb and ensuring all 4 memory slots are populated, and again all tests run fine.
I've tried the memory in ganged mode and unganged mode, but it doesn't make a difference, once i go over 3gb I have the problem, so is this a motherboard fault (i've opened support ticket but had to miss some info as it meant fully stripping down the pc to get hold of the sticker on the side of the pci slot) or a cpu fault seeing the memory controllers are on the cpu?

As far as overheating is concerned, it really shouldn't be a problem. Before getting a cooler for my RAM, it would get too hot to touch during full load, but would never run into any sort of problem. If you don't believe me have a look at what a SUPER*TALENT Stick looks like: http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/200702/supertalentT1000UX2G4_full.jpg - Compare that to the dominator, The SuperTalent has to be just about the ugliest MEM-SINK you could ever lay eyes on  EXCELLENT RAM though
Kind of a really silly question here: when testing below 4gb, you are testing both sticks, right? I mean they look identical, a small distraction & you're putting the same one back in...happened to me...
yep memory was tested as single chips, also as stated previously testing 4 x 1gb of other memory caused memtest to fail, but 4 x 512mb passed, so did 2 x 1gb + 2 x 512mb
memtest fails all the time when have 4gb of memory in this mother in any combination, but using pc-check all memory passes, if my works had a ddr-2 memory checker then I would have also teste the memory in that as that will pick out memory faults better than any software
Also when the dominator is in slot 1 there is about 1cm between heatsink and dominator fins at the most, so this be a possible cause of the memory getting too hot especially as I would leave the machine on 24/7, but as I've re-setup another machine to do the stuff this machine was doing then i'm hoping i don't see the problem..

I can put memory in slot 1 and 3 it will boot fine.
If I install DDR3 in slot 1 and 2 the system will not boot. If I full populate all the memory slots it will not boot
In both scenario's after the system does not boot and go back to just using slots 1 and 3 the system boot with CMOS checksum error and need to go in to BIOS setup. All the changes need to be made again, saved and exit and it reboots fine.
I have already attempted to setup the memory speed to 1333 and 1066 with no luck. Any ideas?

  • Msi p4n diamond and memory module setup for dual channel reading

    hi,
ive just built my mum a pc using a msi p4n diamond mainboard which has 2 gig of ddr2 667 mhz memory, just wondering how to go about setting it up to dual channel as its currently showing up in boot post screen as being single channel.. Now correct me if i'm doing wrong but it has 2 green slots and 2 orange slots, should there be 1 stick of ram in green and one stick of ram in the oarnage slot to show dual channel or both sticks as they are situe at present in green slots please..
    system spec is below..
    mainboard - msi p4n diamond
cpu - intel pentium 4 @stock speed 3.0 ghz HT
geforce 8800 gs @ 512 meg of ram
    500 gig s-ata hard drive
    600 w coolmaster  psu
    2x1 gig kingston ddr2@667 mhz
    first release bios
thank you and hope you can advise me..

It's in the manual, if you don't have one you can download from here:
    http://www.msi.com/service/download/manual-4385.html
If both sticks are in green as you say then yes it's single channel. For dual channel you want to leave 1 stick in DIMM1, green slot nearest CPU & move the 2nd stick to the orange DIMM3 slot.
From left to right DIMM1/2-green, DIMM3/4-orange, dual is 1 stick DIMM1 & 1 stick DIMM3 or 1 stick DIMM2 & 1 stick DIMM4 or 4 sticks all four slots filled. Single channel is 2 sticks in green slots or 2 sticks in orange slots or not recommended is 3 sticks in 3 of the 4 slots.

  • Memory modules and hard drive not recognized

I removed and reinserted the factory installed Satellite L505D-LS5007 laptop hard drive and memory modules just as practice for installing a hard drive upgrade and an 8GB memory upgrade. The problem is obviously with the memory and not with the hard drive.
After the first practice try, one memory module was recognized. Also for a few seconds after the first practice try, I ran the PC with the battery installed, but no memory installed. I did not look in the User's Guide first to see that I should have removed the battery before removing the memory.
Now the System Indicator Lights for the HDD Activity and Memory Card Reader do not light up. The PC turns on and the display is solid black with no messages.
Before buying new memory modules, what possible ways might there be to get the PC to recognize the factory installed memory modules and hard drive again?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.

  • K9A2 Platinum trouble with mouse.

Hello all, Im having trouble with my K9A2 Platinum and my Razerr Lachesis usb plug in mouse. I have to unplug and plug my mouse in several times a day due to my mouse curser jumping all over the place. I have downloaded the 1.94 razer firmware and still does not work. At first I thought this was a Razer issue, Now I know its a msi issue. I know several people who have the K9A2 and have the same trouble with there mouse. The mice they have are all random and not just razers, different products. I have tried every driver. Old drivers, new drivers, different combinations of drivers and nothing works. Have tried plugging to the back of my Razer tarantule. Have tried different usb ports, nothing. Will take all the help I can get please. I have googled this and have tried everything. To the point if I have to get a new motherboard, trust me it will not be a MSI one. I have spent a lot of money building this rig. Any advise please. Thank you all for reading.

Enter SafeMode and DeviceManager. What relevant mouse(s) and possibly HID-devices do you find?
The skipping mouse can come from an auto-starting program or virus. That is something that would not be seen in SafeMode, too.

  • K9A2 Platinum, freezing (total lockup) + running 4x1GB 1066MHz ram

    Hi,
just built a pc using the K9A2, after i got it built it was freezing all the time (like 20 to 30 times in the first day) most of the time in IE7, it hasn't in a game yet, it didn't show any errors in an hour of memtest86 nor in 2 hours of prime95 long and short FFT, but after the first day and a half it stoped doing it, but now a few days on it just locked up again in IE7 again.
    any ideas
    thanks
edit: update, ran a newer version of memtest, and it freezes at about the same time both times at 11'ish minutes so i'm now guessing it's a ram issue, i'm in contact with amd support (who a few days ago assured me it wasn't a CPU problem, it was a MS problem even though i asked about the ram and speed), to ask again if the cpu can run the amount of ram at the speed it's running.

ok, i will ask them about the LEDs.
.. will be interesting to see if they know, as most of the time my problems seem to much for technical support this one should be right in there area, unless they just get up a pdf of my manual, cos it won't be in there.
got my reply from support about the LED's, not as good as bas's
    Question
    LED's on my motherboard
Hi i have 3 LED's on my motherboard (K9A2 platinum) and they are not in the manual can you tell me what they are for,.

    now thats funny!!
there aren't even lights on the usb ports, there on the LAN port,.. i'm guessing that as there not in the manual there not there in their mind, and the only led's they could find in the manual were the LAN ones, but i still haven't got a clue why they're calling them USB LED's,.. hay bas how do you get a line to a real tech?

  • P7N SLI Plat. and memory settings

Hey guy! Again, great forums! Thanks for all the help. Noob question coming up.
I have a couple of questions about the P7N SLI Platinum and memory settings. Oh, before I begin, let me say that I bought this stuff as part of deal, and ended up with the 1066 ram.
I have a few options under my belt, and I don't know which would be the best. I'm also looking for some kind of software to test RAM speeds; test between MHZ and timings performance? Does Sandra do that? Anyone know of any other programs?
Some recommend that I run 1:1 FSB:RAM ratio (looks like the most favored), but some say some boards can do better if everything is running as fast as it can, and not to worry about the ratio.
So which is it with the P7N, which is a 750i chipset?
Here's the rest of the situation:
    I have a set of 2x2GB DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15; 2T  @2.1v.
    I have a Q6600 2.4GHz   @ 3.0Ghz (1333x9) OC-ed.
I have run this memory at 1066 on this board with no hitches (overclocking the board essentially, but it handles it like a champ)
I can also run it at 800; but I have not tried tighter timings on this.
I can run it at 667 and lower timings to 4-4-4-14; 1T with no problems (so far). This gives me a 1:1 ratio as well.
This is what I am running right now.
What should I do with this board and this CPU? Should I keep 1:1 and tighten timings? I don't know if I can go below 4-4-4-14; I haven't tried yet.
Or should I run at 1066 with the stock timings?
I have been reading, but I keep hearing conflicting information (though I will admit, it's hard to find info that is very recent; articles varied from '06-'08) Some say 1:1 is best, others say that it's not necessary these days, with modern boards?
The different performance preferences also seem to vary from chipset to chipset? Is that correct?
Thank You very much for helping a lost noob!

Remus this is no bulldash, i had two 1GB DDR2 1066 cl5 1.8 volt and i sold it on ebay a week ago for £21.00 . i used it on my p6 which would take only ddr2 800 (it ran at 800mhz 1.8 volt but these were not suitable at all in terms of stability) and also on my asus which would take ddr21066 but only after overclocking fsb but keeping the default voltage at 1.8volt. those who say ddr2 1066 1.8 volt does not exist should review their comments. i believe crucial does ddr2 1066  1.8 volt and also ddr2 1066 2.1 volt
here is the proof of ebay

a memory has an oscillator and we  refer to them as 800mhz or 1066mhz. because memory sticks have 240 terminals or pins for transfer of data in order to be able to increase the rate of transfer not only the oscillator speed has to be increased other parameters has to change.
DDR2 1066 1.8 volt is a memory which it's  oscillator oscillate at 1066mhz when 1.8 volt is applied to, it's terminals with cas latency 5 or Cl5.
DDR2 1066 2.1 or 2.2 volt is a memory which it's oscillator oscillate at 1066mhz when 2.1 or 2,2 voltage is applied to it's terminals otherwise it will oscillate at 800mhz. these kind of DDR2 1066 are referred to as DRR2 800 overclocked.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184
I would just get a 2nd set of corsair memory.... but if I get a quad kit I know I am getting 4 matching modules ( Or at least should ).  Instead of memory manufactured a year ago or longer (for original set) and up to this year (for 2nd set).   I don't want problems between same type of memory using different chip sets.  Oh btw,  I would really prefer PC2 8500 or so.
Anyone out there had or have any of these combinations.  Or is there other memory that you would recommend instead.  Overclockability is a plus.
Oh ya I have also thought about upgrading motherboard as well and get something with the 790X or 790FX/SB750 chip sets instead of the 790FX/SB600.  But not quite sure what to get on that end either.
    My system specs are below.

Anyone of the above should work fine. I would consider Mushkin XP2-8500 modules, but with 4 x 2 GB modules you will probably have bad overclockability with any memory.
If you have a K9A2 Platinum now, it's not really useful upgrading to a 790FX + SB750 board. Granted, SATA and USB performance should be a bit better with the SB750 and it has RAID 5 support. For the rest, you will not notice the difference...

  • K9A2 Platinum Memory/RAID config Prob.

I have an MSI K9A2 Plat mobo and a phenom 9500 processor. I bought Mushkin 8500 DDR2 memory. In Bios it sets it at 800 mhz. What do I need to do to get it to run at the advertised speed? This is my first MSI mobo. What are the optimal settings for this set up in bios? HT speed? its at auto but im sure its not at the clocking it should be. Also the memory has a timing of 5-5-4-12 at 2.2-2.35v. When i go into the bios and try to select timing it has about 15 different fields to input. Thats the first problem....
The second issue is that I have 2 raptor HDD's. I initially set them up in a RAID 0 configuration. when the computer restarted after the config it gets to the screen where it detects the two hard drives in raid 0 and says FUNCTIONAL... Thats were it freezes..... I have to do ctrl+alt+del to restart and go back in the BIOS and select IDE under the sata menu. I can format both hard drives and both are working correctly. I was going to try and set up the raid again by hitting ctrl+f but I cannot access the SB600 RAID bios on the board anymore, It just sticks at FUNCTIONAL. Any Ideas? BTW i have bios vers 1.1 850w coolermaster ps and 2 radeon 3870s.

I connected both raptors to the PROMISE controller and I get the same thing FUNCTIONAL, then it stops!
Also whats the best HT speed and how can I get my memory to run dual channel?
everytime I boot up it says single channel.

"and how can I get my memory to run dual channel?

Its already in dual CH(since you have placed memory sticks in correct slots DIMM1 & DIMM2):
AMD's OverDrive Utility, note that it reads the memory controller as single channel because Phenom actually has two independent 64-bit memory controllers instead of a single 128-bit one. Current BIOSes and the AMD utility incorrectly report this as being single-channel.
        * A single-channel mode, when only one of the 64-bit controllers is active (occupied with memory modules)
        * Dual-channel ganged mode, the integrated memory controller is detected by a processor as a single 128-bit controller
        * Dual-channel unganged mode, the integrated memory controller is detected by a processor as two independent 64-bit controllers.
    Read this one as well:

Regarding the dual channel thing, I found the following on the OCZ memory forums:
Just some info for you guys.
ganged mode is 1x128bit dual channel
unganged is 2x64 bit dual channel
Some motherboards are reporting unganged as single channel at boot, this is not true, if you see anyone saying they have defective memory please point them to this post.
Ganged will give higher sandra bandwidth at this time than unganged, this is because sandra does not fully support phenom and is working in 1 thread mode. Once sandra supports Phenom unganged 2x64bit will take the lead
If you are running multi threaded benchmarks you need to be in unganged mode, this is the fastest way of running the system.
CPUID also reports my 9500 as single channel.
You can change it from "advanced dram configuration" locate "Unganged Mode".
Do a memcheck with Memtest86 as well.
Another note about RAID problems, according to promise SS above, you have running BIOS 1.1 or 113, in 1.0,112,P0C Promise version is different(2.8.10.30.0012) you may try to flash back to one of those.
But since problem persist when you connect them to SB600 RAID, probably problem is not there...
Can you retry with different brand HDD's(not Raptors, but with hitachi or seagate for example)?

  • K9A2 Platinum - Install to RAID - Memory issue

    Hello all,
    I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard with a AMD Phenom 9950 BLACK EDITION Agena 2.6GHz Socket AM2+ 140W Quad-Core Processor Model HD995ZFAGHBOX.
I have (2) OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P10664GK, installed for a total of 8G, but can not get it to work at 1066, is this even possible?  The system runs fine at 800, but keeps getting BSoD when switched to 1066.  The timings from OCZ are EPP 5-5-5-18 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS), and I have played with the voltages in the range of 2.1 - 2.2V.  Power should not be a problem as I have a COOLMAX CUQ-1200B 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply.  Anyone have any suggestions?

It won't run 1066 with all four sticks. Simple as this you already found the solution either you have 8 gigs and ddr2-800 or 4gigs at 1066.
