K9A2 Platinum - Will not post... need help.

mobo: k9a2 platinum
cpu: am2 6400 black edition OR phenom 9750
ram: super talent ddr2 800 OR corsair dominator ddr2 1066  - have both been tried single stick only
video card: msi nvidia 9600gt OR ati x300 - used ati card to test video card failure
power supply: 610w pc power and cooling
hdd: seagate barracuda 250gb 32mb cache
OK... original configuration, being the phenom 9750 with the corsair dominator ram, and the nvidia 9600gt.
would not post, black screen... with 2 fast short beeps(1 long beep?) and 6 short beeps, for a beep code... which isn't even covered in the manual or anywhere online for some reason
it has been stated that the bios has to be flashed to the latest version in order to accept the phenom processors... so i then took a am2 6400 and put it in.
proceeding with the same beeps, i took out the ram and replaced it with a stick of super talent ddr2 800, dimm1 slot, single channel. it's also been stated in various comments that this motherboard doesn't initially accept dual channel, nor 1066 ram. i get the same beeps out of the dimm1 slot. i take the stick out and place it in the dimm3 slot... beeps go away, but the black screen remains.
i try different video card configurations, trying the two different video cards in either of the two pci-x 16 slots, black screen remains. in my last configuration, the beeps come back, so i am at a total loss.
anybody able to help me out?

Have you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< yet? (With power cord removed from the PSU)
What keyboard you use?
Have you connected power cable for VGA?

  • K9A2 Platinum will not post - nothing on screen

    System info:
    CPU:      Phenom 9850
    Memory: Corsair dominator 2x1GB 1066
Graphics: DIAMOND VIPER HD RADEON 3850 512MB/VISIONTEK HD RADEON 3650 512MB
    Power:    ANTEC 850W TPQ
    Disks:     WD RAPTOR SATA 150GB 10,000 RPM x 2
I put my system together this weekend and when I powered on, I got nothing on the screen. Unfortunately I don't have a PC speaker in the case, so I cannot here any audio beeps.
Before power on the motherboard shows an orange LED on. When I power on. two additional motherboard lights are on, both bluish - nothing in the documentation about what these are. The graphics card powers on as far as I can tell - the fan is running - as is the CPU fan. I have removed all other components like CD, disks etc. to just try to get POST screen visible. I also changed the graphics card to one that required a lot less power (VISIONTEK), but nothing happens. I tried moving the graphics cards around into different PCI-E slots as well, still no luck.
Its likely that the motherboard BIOS version is not correct for the CPU - 9850 requires BIOS 1.4 and I doubt that this MB BIOS is this version, but MSI tech support tell me that the board should still POST. Obviously I can't flash the BIOS if I have no screen.
I have reset the using jumper switch and removed CMOS battery; no luck. I also just put in one memory stick and this made no difference. Tried placing the graphics card in different PCI-E slots as well.
There is no information for me to determine the motherboard state so its very hard to figure out what to do next other than send it back.
    Thanks, Rick.

Vista would not install either from my SATA DVD player; I don't think it has the drivers to do this from a SATA DVD, so I assume I'll have to use an IDE attached one for the install. I am sure it will be fun!
    Rick.
Vista should install just fine from your SATA DVD drive since it should have all the drivers built in needed to use the SATA drives.  All I did when I installed Vista; was go into the bios and tell it to boot off the DVD drive first and put the Vista DVD in the drive.
What message do you see when you try to install Vista?  It could be more of a memory issue; since Vista is very tempermental and not as tolerant as XP; when it comes to the memory voltages and timings.

  • Dka790gx platinum will not post

    Hi
Just started a new build and the above board will not post.
    I have radeon 4850, 1 x hdd, 1 x dvd, 1 x 2 gig ram 1066, phenom II 940, antec earthwatt 850.
I went through the following process of elimination.
taken board out of chasis, only used 1 stick of ram, used onboard vga and dvi, cleared cmos, removed battery, tried another psu but this is a 550 watt hiper.
the green sticker on the bios reads 160 so i guess it has the correct bios.
Stumped now..Dont know whether its the board or the cpu thats the problem.
    Any ideas thanks

    Update.
The vendor tested the board and it posted for them ok. I spoke to their technical dept and they tried it with an older processor. I sent my processor and ram and they tested these and the board posted.
I received the board, ram and cpu back today. Set it up with a minimum of hardware and it still wont post.
I havent been able to speak to the technician but the only thing I can think of is the psu.
I have an antec eathwatt 650 (not 850 as previously posted..typo). This psu works as it has been use in my current setup with an intel core 2 duo 6400.
What psu's are people using with this board and processor. Phenom II x4 940.
    thanks

  • Houston, we have a problem.. My new K9A2 Platinum will not install an OS

I purchased a K9A2 Platinum (Version 1) and everything went fine with the hookup and install until I went to install the OS.
    Here's the set up:
    1) 9600 Phenom
    2) 4 GB A-Data DDR2 800 RAM (2 2GB Sticks)
    3) Diamond HD3870 Video Card.
    4) 260 GB WD Caviar Sata Drive
    5) LG 18x DVD
note I also Have a 160 GB PATA WD Caviar as well.. more about the in a minute.
I hooked everything up Sata drive as Sata 1 and DVD as Sata 2,
Checked BIOS to be sure everyone was recognized.
Tried to install Vista 64 bit.
    Entered Location, activations etc..
    and Install began
    1) Copied files
    2) Expanded files
    3) Updated system
(no errors occured during these steps)
System rebooted and got the message Windows is booting for the first time etc...
Then to the finalizing Installation line, which... well.. never gets final (I've left it on that screen for 3+ hours).. Sometimes it locks up.
I tried installing Windows XP and I get through all of the installation, but when it reboots to WIndows from the DVD.. It can't find the OS..
I installed the PATA drive and tried installing Vista to it with no difference in the results.  I suspect I am doing something stupid here (I have done this before.. it's my fifth build and never a problem before). A note that on the PATA if I use the Chip Select jumper (Out of the box settings) Everything's recognized but it sets it up as a slave. IF I set it as a lone master  the BIOS recoginizes it, but windows doesn't. If I set it up as a master.. the system doesn't post. I am going to try to install XP on the PATA and see if that works, However I want to run Vista on this beast, so even if it does, well I still need help..
Yes I promise, this is all a cry for help... If anyone has any ideas I'd surely be apreciative..  In fact I'd be so appreciative I'd help you remove an garbage (viruses, spyware etc..) for free (ok I do that for free anyway.. I'm cajuntek everywhere I go on the net.. You can find me in the Security Cleanup forum at dslreports most often..  Thanks again for any help you guys can provide on this.

I don't trust [Auto] Vmem in the BIOS.
First, Cajuntek, I would try beta BIOS 1.33.
You can download it from http://www.magnaroute.com/deliver/
This BIOS has been very stable for me, MSI Tech Support gave it to me to attempt to solve memory stability I have had with 4x dual rank memory modules.  It doesn't fix that problem but it does make the system more stable and compatible over the publicly released BIOSes as far as I can tell.
I would also suggest you put in a fixed voltage value in the BIOS for your memory.  I use 2.3V because I am overclocking.  You can probably use 2.0V or 2.1V.  It is possible that the [Auto] setting may be giving your system too little voltage on the memory and that may be causing your lockup.

  • Camera will not open need help

i have the 4th generation ipod touch and i have very few complaints the only thing i can really complain about its that when i try to open up my camera instead of opening up the screen stays black is there anything i can do to stop  this from happening

I am trying to open some *.avi files in quicktime, they are from my security camera at home.  It will not open them, would anyone be able to help me?  It says I need a plugin but it does not tell me which one.
Basically your player is telling you that you need to install the codecs that will play the compressed data within the AVI file.
AVI is a legacy file container in which the tracks of data are interleaved to maintain synchronization. This data can be encoded using many different audio and video codecs. Your problem is to determine which codecs you need for the player you are trying to use and install them if they are available. Failing that, your will either have to play the files in a different player which has the codec support your require built into the app or convert the content to a compression format that is natively compatible with the player you wish to use.
Since you have not stated what platform, operating system, and particular player you are targeting for playback, it is difficult to provide precise instructions for fixing your specific problem at this point. Suggest you try alternative players compatible with your system and platform to see if they will play the files, use a dedicated media information utility to determine the codecs needed for playback, or post a sample file for analysis.

  • Ringtones will not work - need help!

Ok, so assuming I have done everything right, here is my problem.  I have ringtones I downloaded.  I set my phone to a special ring tone and I set a contact to have a different ring tone.
When my phone rings from that contact it does not ring with the tone I specified, only the main ring tone I set for my phone.
In my options it says that it will use the ring tone for all calls except important calls and the call from my contact.
I got on the phone with BB tech support at Verizon who had me re-verify how I set my ring tones, and then even had my reset my phone.  The phone will still only recognize the one ring tone.  It will not ruse the ring tone I set for a particular contact.  They think my phone may be defective.
Does anyone know of a setting that may need to be changed somewhere else to get this to work?  It should be very easy to get a ring tone to work, but I also know there are so many sub menus and settings on this phone maybe there is another step.
    Can some one help?

  • P35D3 Platinum will not POST, CPU: E8500, RAM: KVR1333D3N9/1G RAM HELP!

    Ok guys please help me...
I received this item (P35D3 Platinum) back from MSI today after sending it to them RMA, they said there is nothing wrong with it, sent it back, and it is still doing the same thing.
    Here is the issue:
1st when i boot it up the computer turns off and on 4 times by it self, then it freezes up on "testing Base and extended memory Testing base memory from 240k to 640k and extended memory above 1mb using various patterns" (light pattern is as follows: Group 4 - Green, Group 3 - Red, Group 2 - Green, Group 1 - red).  On the screen/monitor it shows your "MSI" logo and says "press TAB to switch to POST or DEL to run BIOS setup."  But it does not respond my pressing any buttons on computer.
Here is a link to your website that states my ram is compatible: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=38177&mfr=MSI&model=P35D3+Platinum+Motherboard&root=&LinkBack=&Sys=38177-MSI-P35D3+Platinum+Motherboard&distributor=0&submit1=Search
I have KVR1333D3N9/1G RAM i have tried a single dimm in all 4 slots (item is new)
I have a Intel E8500 Dual Core Processor (item is new)
I have a invidia 8800GTX OC, (pulled from working computer, and i know it works)
I am using a USB mouse and keyboard.  <-- (is that ok or do i need PS2 keyboard since no OS is installed??)
Why am i stuck, what am i missing here? Any help would be great
Thanks for your help on this issue..

Okay, from the symptoms you describe, your problem is rather minor.  You seem to have the E0-Revision of the E8500 (which requires BIOS Version 1.6).  Your BIOS is probably older than that and does not include the proper microcode to fully support that processor.  The signs you describe are well known on P35 Mainboards.
    Please check the following:
    1) The sSpec-Number of your processor:
    ---> SLB9K = E8500/E0
    ---> SLAPK = E8500/C0
    2) Check the factory BIOS-Version:
It should be printed on a small sticker on the BIOS Chip itself. You can find the BIOS Chip here:
Look for "A7356 IMS ? ? ?".  If it says "160" where I put the question marks, you have v1.6 (120 would be v1.20).
Now, if your BIOS Version is older than v1.6, please try this:
    - Download the latest BIOS Archive from the product site of your board and unpack the BIOS File (A7356IMS.160)
    - Rename A7356IMS.160 to AMIBOOT.ROM and copy this file to an empty, formated and flawlesse floppy disk
    - attach an internal floppy drive to the mainboard (make sure that it is properly connected)
    - attach a PS/2 Keyboard
    - start-up the system and hit CTRL+Home on the keyboard continiously and check if the system accesses the floppy drive and initiates an AMI BIOS Recovery Flash
If the you are able to update the BIOS via the AMI Recovery Routine, your processor should be properly supported and the system should be able to start-up properly after that.
If the procedure does not start after pressing CTRL + Home, try to get you hands on an older processor to be able to flash the BIOS the regular way to support your E8500/E0.
In case you cannot get your hands on a supported processor, I suggest you ask in a local computer shop for assistance.  This looks like a solvable problem.
Ok Jack the newbie, i got a floppy disk and renamed the file, got a PS2 keyboard (and tab worked i was able to see i have v1.4 before it locked up on me.), did just as you instructed me...  New the computer keeps turning off and on when i press CTRL + Home, i hear it start reading the floppy but then it just turns off and on over and over and does not update.
The only other processor i have is a intel P45 dual core, i think the mobo supports it but i dont know if it will work with the DDR3 ram i have.  Thanks for you help,
One more thing, just so you know, after it started turning off and on i did pull the battery and press the reset bios button and tried again, but still it just turns off and on.
    Thanks,
    shawn

  • Internal Hard Drive will not mount -- need help!

My Mac Dual 450 has been a constant problem since I installed Tiger several weeks ago. There have been crashes every day. Disk First Aid did not help. Then I discovered I had TechTool Deluxe which I had gotten from Apple a few months ago. It has diagnostics for just about everything you can think of. I tried it. Big mistake.
Everything came out OK except it said there were some bad blocks, and an invalid BTree node size 8.0 (whatever that is). I tried to get it to repair the HD and it said it could not, that the HD was not mounted (I had booted from TechTool disk). Then I tried to reboot from the internal HD and I got a big bad black box saying that I had to restart. I tried that many times and kept getting the message. I booted from the Apple Tiger install disk and tried to run Disk First Aid on my HD but it said there were problems and Disk First Aid could not correct them because the HD was not mounted. I tried this and the TechTools Disk many times. Same result.
I then booted from an external system 9.2.2 HD and tried to use the Disk First Aid on that. Same result: it said the Macintosh HD (my internal) was not mounted so Disk First Aid could not repair it.
I have tried everything I could think of (option-boot, C-boot, etc) and nothing will let me boot from the internal HD or even mount it. I spent quite a bit of time with AppleCare rep and he could not succeed in getting the HD to mount.
He suggested either trying Disc Warrior which I do not have, or possibly resetting the PMU on the logic board and he sent me instructions for that, which seem ominous to say the least. And I doubt that it would solve my problem since the computer sees the HD, it just can't mount it. Resetting the PMU seems to be for computers that can't see the HD and won't start. But mine does just fine with other start-up disks.
Are there any suggestions on what else I can try? Is there a program that can be downloaded that mounts hard drives?
My Mac Dual 450 has 1.25 gb of RAM.
Thanks for any help. I need it fast.

Thank you for your suggestions and your continuing interest in trying to solve my problem. I rebooted with CMD + S and got the black screen with white text. Unfortunately I could not type anything on it. I typed /sbin/fsck -y and hit return. Nothing showed on the screen. I waited awhile in case this was one of those situations where it is hidden. But nothing happened. I tried the whole sequence a couple more times and same thing: I was unable to type anything that would show up on the screen.
Am I missing something here? I tried typing holding down various keys and could not get anything to register.
For what it is worth, the last line that showed on the screen is "panic. We are hanging here..."
I do not think that is related to what I typed since it was there when the screen first appeared, but could it nonetheless have somethng to do with my computer or hard drive?
I am right now installing system X.4 onto an external HD. If I can get that to boot and work OK, I can just use that for awhile until I get the internal either replaced or repaired.
If you see my previous posts, I had a devil of a time installing system X.4 to begin with. Maybe my HD was troubled all this time??? Or could there be some other underlying problem with my Dual 450? I suppose I will find out when I try to boot from the external.
Incidentally, I have an external HD with 9.2.2 on it and have had no trouble booting from it or using it.
    Thanks again for your help.

i click on the icon to open iTunes and get a message that says:

iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
then it has (- Debug - Send Error Report - Don't Send) as options to do.
i have uninstalled itunes and quicktime about 3 times and still having this issue... please help!

    thanks for the help....
after searching for about another half hour i came across this post.. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=800151&tstart=135
i followed the directions in here and then i finally got it. after you install the quicktime stand alone version, check and make sure it works as stated in that post... then install the iTunes. when i then opened itunes it said that i had a previous version of quicktime and that iTunes requires the newer version of quicktime.
    - go to control pannel add/remove programs then scroll down to quicktime
    - there should be two(2)Quicktime programs installed.
    - click "click here for support information"
    - then you should see which version of Quicktime is installed---do this to both of the quicktimes installed.
    - whichever has the lower version number ex: 7.0.1 and 7.0.3... delete the 7.0.1 version.
    - after deletion then go to the quicktime version that you did not uninstall-in the example i used (7.0.3) click -CHANGE- then -REPAIR- on the following window that repairs.
this should then repair the version that is installed so that iTunes and quicktime function properly. run quicktime and make sure that it works. if it works then close the programs completely and make sure that it is "exit ed" from the bottom right hand of the screen.
after this run iTunes. if it works Fantastic!!
if not try to uninstall iTunes and quicktime and then follow the directions that "Stephenb." has posted
Hope this helps.. Email me for ?s if desired

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum will not POST, but fans spin.

I bought this board about 2 months ago.
I install the board and it works fine, until a few weeks ago. Im playing fear and it crashes into BSOD...then every time i try to load a game BSOD. This points to the memory- so i look at my DDR booster, and teh memory is a little off...i correct it and the game loads fine. I play for a little longer, then exit to windows and then the computer just starts BSODing like every 5 minutes. So i was like " it" im going to cut the memory back...strangly, the only dividers that work were 133 and 183...the rest just did not work.
Then finally, i restart the computer, and no POST screen. I clear CMOS, nothing. Take the battery out for an hour, nothing. Take the memory out, no POST...I dont get it...the fans spin and everything powers on, but no signal is sent to the monitor.
Then today, a few weeks later, I plug in just a PSU and a video card.  Same thing happens:  Fans spin, no POST.  oddly enough, whenever power is supplied to teh mobo it turns on, it doesnt wait for a power button to be pushed.
2 things that might help diagnose the problem:
Almost every BSOD pointed to ntfs.sys
The PSU makes that clicking sound like its restarting about every 10 seconds when i boot up and there is no POST.
Anyone know what i need to do? All other componants work fine in a AV8 3rd Eye, so it is the mobo.
    Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum.  Please post complete system specs by creating a "sig" as described in the forum rules. Be sure to include complete power supply specs (brand, model and amps on 3.3, 5 and 12 volts) as shown on the label on the side of the power supply itself.  The fact that a component works in the ABIT board does not mean that it is not the problem in your board, so don't forget to list all components in reasonable detail (e.g., memory size brand specs, hd, cards).  Please confirm that you board is MSI #7025 too.  Good luck.
EDIT - We need to know your Bios version and whether you flashed, and if so, how and from and to what versions.
fixed.  All info should be in sig.  I have tried 2 different PSUs, my Powersream 520 and my Antec SL400 all to no avail.
I did flash my bios via booting off a floppy to the most recent beta bios, but it worked fine for a good while before eventually failing.
All the componants in the sig were working fine in the mobo, and my HTT was 305x9 Stable.  I was using a DDR Booster.
And im sorry, what do you mean by MSI #7025?

  • P35 Platinum - will not POST

    Hi all,
PC has been stable for nearly 2 years now.  Problem started after a clean install of Vista 64-bit, while installing updates (had software problems, so clean install).
After one set of updates the PC hung while trying to shut down Windows for a restart - sat at the shutting down screen for a couple of hours.
Eventually I shut down by holding the power button.
On restart I wanted to enter Safe mode, so was trying to hit F1, but the machine seemed to be stuck on the logo screen - F1 doing nothing, Del doing nothing, tab doing nothing, so I restarted the PC again.
On reboot this time the fans span up, then immediately machine went into a reboot loop, every 3 seconds or so.
Checked diagnostic LEDs - first RRRR, then machine rebooted and gave RRGR - memory test, then reboot to RRRR, RRGR, etc.
I reset CMOS and dumped all but one RAM chip - still no post, blank screen etc, but now the diag LEDs go to RRGG (decompressing BIOS to RAM), and nothing else happens except I get a single beep every 10 seconds or so.
I've tried changing the single RAM chip, tried in different RAM slots, changed the PSU, but still the same.
    Any advice please?
    Thanks all

I almost certainly flashed to the latest BIOS when building the PC (September 2007)
When it September? Do you remember that?  There were some serious issues with memory compatibility in BIOS v1.3 (released in July 2007) which were finally fixed in v1.5 (2007-09-28)).  If you are using v1.3 or v1.4 your current problem may have to do with that memory bug.  The symptoms were precisely the same and it sometimes happened that everything ran perfectly fine until the problem was triggered by a certain event.  The solution was ususally to install a DDR2-667 memory stick and then update the BIOS to the latest version.
    Quote
At this stage I'm thinking either the CPU or the motherboard is dead...
Not necessarely.  Try a DDR2-667 memory stick (an old but functional 256MByte stick would be enough) and see if that changes anything.  If it does not, please hook up an internal floppy drive to the board and a PS/2 keyboard and follow this procedure using the latest BIOS Release:

    My Current System is : i7  875k [email protected] GHz,on OC Genie- - P55 Big Bang-Fuzion (MS-7582)- -BIOS v1.5 --CORSAIR CMT4GX3M2A2133C9 4GB 2133MHz, 9-10-9-27, 1.65V, with Intel XMP -- NSI R5850 Twin Frozr II-- Real Power M520, with two WD Caviar Black 500 GB SATA Hard Drives ( WD5001AALS) in Raid 0

like Xmad said get a good 600W PSU from a trusted manufacturer of a single +12V kind. split rails are only good when there very high ampage ones (over 30A per rail) and the single rail ones are a better pick all-round!
and like Xmad also pointed out id also recomend a Corsair or seatronic unit of 600W or more!
it doesn't matter how the power went out as any thing that pulls over the load a PSU can supply will fead back and cause damage to the PSU itself!
alot of PSU makers cannot be trusted much as they put lables on the psu that are no where neer the real units performance level as they use a bench version that have uprated VRM's and bigger heatsinks and high end refrigerated coolers to stop them overloading thats totally un-realistic!
