K9A2GM V2 mobo with sata III 6.0Gb/sec... make sense?

I have just upgraded to a WD Caviar Black drive capable of 6.0Gb/sec transfer. Does it make sense for me to add a PCI Express Sata III controller to utilize this transfer speed? Or is there a limitation in my mobo that will just "waste" the extra transfer speed. How do I test the current transfer speed of my hard drives?

'Capable of' doesn't meant it is 'able to'.
Mechanical hard disks are limited in their transfer speeds by their own physical actions. SATA 6Gb/s is pretty pointless for mechanical hard drives as they are simply not fast enough to utilise the bandwidth available. So no, there would not be any performance increase even if you added a SATA 6Gb/s SATA controller card.

Tecra R850 - SSD support for SATA III 6.0GB

Hi.
I bought R850 with SSD.
The bad thing is that SSD 256gb installed is limited to SATA II with transfer up to 300/mb. I read that Sandy Bridge Supports SATA III which covers 600/mb.
Is somebody successfuly installed better SSD disk capable with SATA3?
I tried Sisoft Sandra and it reported that SSD SATA is II, the same for Motherboard. The HwINFO reported that chipset is capable with SATA 3. The Everest shows only SSD data with SATA 2.
Is the bios blocked for higher transfers ? I got 180mb/s read, 150 mb/write - which is 3x worse than normal SATA 3 256gb SSD harddisks.
Can anybody help me and tell - if it is matter of R850 bios ? or just only the old Toshiba SSD firmware ? if I buy better SSD with SATA3 - will it fully support higher speed ?

HI. this is Tecra R850-1D8 with Toshiba's SSD 256gb. I know that laptop has Sandy bridge and should support 6.0gb SATA III, but in strange way Toshiba limited it and Sandra and other programs sees that it its SATA II only compatible. I think the problem is hidden in the bios.
I think there is no hardware limits - only slow old SSD and limited bios.
Maybe this could be unblocked ? or Toshiba upgrade the bios - to allow user to use newer SSD drives ?
May they would like to sell new R850 with newer SSDs so they will need unblock it.

I used a OCZ Agility 3 (Sata III) on the T410 previously then I moved to SSD to a W520 (support Sata III)... Both laptop boots fast and open applications at an amazing speed.... Not sure how to explain my experience though ...
I am not sure how to measure the performance cause I didn't do any benchmarking during that time ... but all I can say is .... SSDs are amazing ... hahaha

X220 msata slot compatible with SATA III

I do have a msata II 60gb in my x220, but would like to upgrade it with a bigger model from http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT120M500SSD3
that one is msata III but claims to be SATA 2 compatible.
Will this combination work with my x220? In another blog post I read that it has major drawbacks (much slower) to use a msata3 drive in a msata2 slot. Is that true?

I can't comment on Sandforce-based SSDs, but the Crucial m4 mSATA uses a Marvell controller.
This article: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6884/ states that the m500 is also Marvell-based.
Please post back with your impressions once you're up and running on the SSD.

How can I have two fields with the same name if it makes sense?

Hello, folks :)
I have a pretty hard time figuring out how I can have two text fields with the same binding name.
The whole problem is that when I need two fields with the same binding name they are still differnent coz they have the same name but differnt indices.
I should make a form filled at runtime by merging a pdf form file and an fdf file data file. And I have no choice to do it differently. And my form file needs some data like customerName, companyName twice in one form. But there's only one possible buinding name indexed zero.
How can I create a field with absolutely the same name or is it just impossible due to possible name conflicts? And is there a workaround to this problem? I just need one piece of data repeated in different places.

One pdf should be mergred with an fdf with as the result of their merge a new filled and flattened form. I have no control over fdfs their are generated by Oracle and I can not fill the form using XML files coz this process should be integrated in a working application.

I just thought about a really ugly workaround with a server-side script adding values to fdf files but it's a bit of work and tests and personally i think it's a bad idea :-(

[Solved] Beachballs on late 2008 15" MacBook Pro MacBookPro5,1 with SATA II HD

Each time I upgraded hard disks in my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro ( MacBookPro5,1 ) I experienced increasing beachballs. The worst was my recent upgrade to a Seagate 1TB SSD hybrid drive.
I had lived with this pain for years and it appears a simple jumper change could have solved it. In my opinion all or at least some models of the late 2008 MacBook 15" Pros do not reliably support SATA II 3 Gbit/second.
See jumper diagram for Seagate drives. Note the diagram is showing drive laying hard disk circuit board side up. Other manufacturers may differ.

From what I uderstand my late 2008 MacBook Pro was designed to support SATA II 3 Gbit/second with it's Nvidia chip set. In fact every model from late 2008 appears to have support for SATA II.
Then in early 2011 they added support for SATA III 6 Gbit/sec which the 1TB ST1000LM014 hybrid drive also supports. ( Hopefully they got SATA III right in their first 2011 model year. ) Unfortunately for me I do not think they got SATA II right in their first late 2008 model year.

Hi Mike,
I am not sure it is same issue if drive is not even recognized. But I would not give up hope. I know my late 2008 MacBookPro5,1 has this problem even though it was designed to work at SATA II 3 Gbit/second. It may be possible that your 2009 model has a similar issue.
If the jumper works for you, then please cut and paste your MacBook's Hardware Overview. It would be nice to see the Serial-ATA hardware too. Go to:

Sata-II or Sata-III?

Hey everyone. Me again. I'm back to my hard drive replacement for my Macbook Pro Mid-'10 again, but this time it's about compatability. I've done extensive reasearch on what hard drive I want and I've narrowed it down to one (shown in the first link) but I keep getting mixed opinions on running Sata II vs Sata III in a Macbook Pro Mid-'10. Some say that you can only run a Sata II because that's the interface they were built with and wont communicate with an Sata III while others disagree. I even did a search from OWC's website (shown in the second link below) on what upgrade options I have and they have a hard drive with Sata III listed. I'm so confused. Is there anyone who can give me a straight answer?

Your computer supports SATA II - 3.0 Gb/s drives. Neither of those two are SATA II drives. Instead look at:

How to limit SATA III to SATA II speed on MBP 2011

I've bought an 240 GB SSD with SATA III interface. The SATA controller detects the device correctly and sets up a 6Gbit/s connection.
With this set up my system - and according to many public postings many other systems, too - experience temporary failures of the connection, i.e. the system repeatedly stops sending data over the sata connection. Some information hint that the SATA cable doesn't support 6Gbit/s because it's not shielded well.
I would like to solve this issue by limiting the SATA-sped to 3Gbit/s. This should be possible somehow...
Does anybody know how to configure the SATA-controller to set up a SATA II / 3Gbit/s connection to the SSD?

The author tested one sata II and three sata III solid state drives in an MacBook pro 13" early 2011.
There are many articles in the net describing problems with MBP 2011 and sata III ssds.
I hope that limiting the sata controller to 3Gbit/s will solve the problem.
I would prefer this solution over buying a sata II ssd. First, because all modern ssd have sata III support and second, because I will be able to use the ssd when I switch to the MBP 2012 at some time in the future.

i don't think bios update will solve your issue. it's about hardware support and it seems your g565 doesn't support sata 2 interface.

TP T60 SATA port / SATA III SSD?

Hi, I have an old IBM/Lenovo TP T60 1952-CTO and I need a new hard drive. I immediately thought of buying some SSD (probably Micron RealSSD C400 128/256GB used in new ThinkPads). The problem is that these new SSDs are equipped with SATA III interface. My question is if my T60 has a SATA II port and if I can use that (or similar) SSD with this laptop.

Yes, that should work fine. Unlike with older computers, there really is no capacity limitation for machines with SATA interfaces.
Two other recommendations for upgrading are to bring your ThinkPad T60 up to 3GB of RAM (you can install 2×2GB of RAM, but the last 1GB of RAM will not be accessible due to chipset limitations) and to use a newer version of Windows than Windows XP on it, as the SSD, like all modern disk drives, uses a different sector size that Windows XP does not handle very well. Windows Vista, 7 and 8 will all work fine, but most people seem to prefer Windows 7 due to its improvements over Vista.

Sata III hard drive cable compatible with older generation of macbook pro

Would my macbook ( 17 in mid 2009 ) be compatible with a new hard drive cable ( sata III ) ? I upgraded my hard drive to Samsung Pro 840 and wanted to upgrade my sata II cable to a sata III for faster read and write. Is this possible?

replacing the cable will not increase the interface speed, just as putting racing slicks on a minivan won’t make it a dragster. I have the same model SSD in my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and my MacBook Pro’s SATA interface is limited to SATA II, just like yours. Unless you’re planning on mainly running disk-bound apps, it’s not something that you’ll need to worry about — just enjoy the SSD as is.

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.

W520 support for SATA III or 6GB with Vertex 3 240GB SSD

I need a laptop that supports 16GB memory, HD display (1920 X 1080) and SATA 3 with 6Gb speeds to leverage my existing Vertex 3 240GB SSD.
Looking up PSREF, I find the W520 specs state SATA 3Gb/s (SATA II?) while the chipset is QM67 which is supposed to support SATA III 6Gb/s.
So the question is, does the W520 support SATA 3 at 6Gb/s? I need the throughput to leverage the throughput of the Vertex 3 240GB SSD for multiple VM's on my laptop.

Just for the record i been using several SSDs with the W520 including the OCZ Vertex 3 and OCZ Vertex 3 max and they both fit fine with the rubber rails in the W520. Just don't mount the case that is normally around the HDD/SSD. You won't need that case anyway when using the SSD in the W520. Use only the rubber rails and the SSD will fit fine and should be seated fine as well.

Big Problems with Samsung Series 830 SSD SATA III (256GB) and W520

i get my W520 last week with an normal SATA 500 GB Drive, at home i changed it to a Samsung Series 830 SSD SATA III (256GB) and install windows 7 64bit pro via recovery media.
I was wondering, startup was taking very long .... from starting windows to the logon screen 1.45 minutes ... Now i tried a new recovery, same issue, tested the harddisk which is in good state.
I changed back to the 500GB Drive, startup take only 30 seconds around....
Are there any known issues?

1. RST is installed

3. latest Lenovo Updates are all installed
4. latest Windows Updates are all installed
5. Clean Install i have tried, but first startup has shown the same issue
6. Tried the SSD via main bay and via multibay
7. checked BIOS for AHCI Mode
8. switched to Diagnostic mode (where can i view the report, machine goes driectly further in Booting windows)?

What speaks again Samsung SSD's, at the moment it is the fastest SDD on the market and so far i've seen no bad rewiews.
I can't find any thread with same (SSD and problem) ... i have seen some SSD issues in another community thread, but not with same symtoms. I don't know where to locate, at the SSD, at W520, whereeever.

MSI GT60 with Vertex 4 SSD - Freezing, won't load Windows only in SATA III port

Hello,
New to the world of SSD's and trying to get my Vertex 4 to be able to operate at 6 Gb/s. I know that in my MSI GT60 that it has to be in port 1 because that is where the SATA III controller is, port 4 is just a SATA II. I was able to update the Vertex 4 to firmware version 1.5 and when it is plugged into port 4, no issues at all. It will run and take anything i throw it while running at 3 Gb/s in SATA II mode. My port 1 currently houses a 500gb Western Digital Scorpio drive.
As soon as i throw the Vertex 4 in port 1, issues arise. Sometimes i get a disk read error right after bios, sometimes it just freezes. On the latest Intel RST for my board, 11.2.0.1006 it can actually boot on occasion but 90% of the time freezes but still only reads 3 Gb/s when it does boot. It does the same thing in version 11.1.0.1006 and any older RST it just freezes or says disk read error and never boots.
I have my bios set to AHCI mode and i have tried the Vertex 4 by itself and also with the WD 500gb in the other port. When i switch back to Vertex 4 in port 4 and WD in port 1, no issues at all. Just trying to see if this is a known issue or anything else i can look at. I made sure to break the RAID 0 and it was a clean install of windows 7 to the drive.
Running on bios E16F3IMS.10M. The Vertex 4 is at its latest firmware as well. I do have one PCI device i can't identify in Windows and thinking it might be the issue but can't narrow it down. I have the Intel RST installed.
I also posted this on the OCZ forum and did their tips as well.
