K9N NEO-BIOS ver 1.3: Cool 'n Quiet option missing

Hey guys,
I recently flashed my BIOS (AMI) to 1.3 for the K9N NEO motherboard and noticed that the Cool 'n Quiet option in the H/W menu group is missing.  I don't know if it was already missing prior to flashing the BIOS, but I am assuming that it was removed since it was already enabled by default.  Is this correct?
I observed the behavior of the machine using CPU-Z after setting the Power Scheme to Minimal Power Management in Windows, but did not notice any drop in voltage nor CPU speed.
Any thoughts on this?  Did they really remove the option from version 1.3 of the BIOS?  How long must the machine remain idle while in Windows for the Cool 'n Quiet feature to kick in?
Thanks in advance for your response!  Here are the specifications of my machine:
Processor: Sempron 3000+ 1.6GHz
Motherboard: K9N Neo
Memory: 1-Generic 512MB DDR2 PC533
O/S: Windows XP Professional SP2
Thanks again!

There is no CnQ support for that model Am2 Sempron 3000+
http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/am2sempron-1.htm
(so it's just logical the BIOS detects it and hides the CnQ option)
Reason : It runs at just 1.6ghz and as semprons also has the low amount of cache so it already
runs with very little wattage/heat.No sense in having CnQ on it.

Can I get some BIOS with AMD Cool n Quiet option enabled?
I get irritate when my A8 5550m cant get higher than 2.1GHz when the CPU can handle even 3.1GHz. I can fix this with restarting only, and it get back to 2.1GHz when I power on my laptop
    G405s-7577 users. Thanks.
nb. Sorry for my bad english

64 bit I hope. Go into the device manager and look for the processor. Right click on the processor and choose properties then driver, then driver details. It should say amd processor rather than generic processor. The driver name should have amd in it (amdk8.sys) and not just processor.sys or something generic. For mobile processors the correct name is PowerNow! not Cool 'n Quiet although I cannot recall if the zv5000z actually uses a mobile processor or a desktop processor. I believe it is mobile.

  • Crackling! When AMD Cool'n'Quiet is enab

I was wondering why that is, recently because summer, I have enabled AMD Cool'n'Quiet option, when I switch it on, the X-Fi (Elite Pro) begins to crackle. I turn it off, it becomes flawless once again.
    I'm on nForce 4 chipset (A8N32-SLI)

I am running MSI K8N Neo Platinum/SLI 64FX? with 4gbram?I have never really used the cool n quiet utility becasue it always seemed to make the motherboard fans whine somewhat, for this purpose I enabled and disabled cool n quiet several times, and I honestly didnt hear any difference in sound, albeit the fan whinning was there. I dont know if this is conected or not, its possible cool N quiet creates other noise as well. I never did like the util. But, it might stand to reason that if the utility was creating voltage or signal variations it could cause the rice krispies syndrome so many people have been talking about. Have to get some more feedback on this issue.

  • Cool and Quiet ok to use on NF980-G65 / 965 CPU?

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's safe to use the cool and quiet option in the bios on the NF980-G65 motherboard with the AMD 965 Black Edition CPU.
I had the MSI overclocking center open (I'm not overclocking just monitoring the temperatures) and heard this faint siren sound, thought it was one of my neighbors car alarms.  Once I discovered that it was coming from my computer I opened HWMonitor and noted that the CPU fan was only running at 3%, and I guess that's lower than what ever is configured in the MSI Overclocking center since the alarm noise was coming from the overclocking center.
The CPU was still in the safe zone at about 54°c at the time that the CPU fan was down running at 3%, my guess was due to cool and quiet taking over maybe.
I've read that this CPU can go pretty high in temps but of course we should try to keep it as cool as possible so this leaves me baffled about the cool and quiet (if that's what causes it) to drop the CPU fan down to about 1680RPM since the temps seem like they would have kept rising if the fan doesn't speed up.
Anyway, is it safe to use Cool and Quiet on this mainboard with this CPU?

Unfortunately, I live in a 40+ year old house, in the desert, where our now summer month temps are into the 3 digit marks (100-121°f) and this house doesn't have insulation in the walls so the temps inside are only maintained at 76°f and the computer room is a bit hotter than that even with the central air going and an additional window a/c unit in the computer room.
I am using the Thermaltake Element G box which has a huge fan on the side door, a very large fan on the front, an equally large fan to exhaust on the back, an large fan again on the top of the case and finally, 2 60mm fans on the back to exhaust near the video cards and so my CPU runs probably warmer than the average person that is able to keep their rooms down to 65°f unfortunately.
Anyway, the cool and quiet used to be turned off and I had the other options on so that it would try to maintain the CPU at 45°c which it's perfectly capable of doing when I'm not playing games, and of course it's still capable fo keeping it under 60°c when playing games, and most of the time the temps dont' get above 57°c when playing demanding games but it concerns me that the CPU fan would drop to only 3% using cool and quiet and I'll likely turn it off again but I'm still curious if there is any known issues with running cool and quiet on this mainboard and CPU.
    Thanks for the reply

It's kind of hard for us to understand you, sorry. I think you want to know if there is a known overheating issue with K9N Neo, MS-7260. Your neighbour told you so as his died because of overheating. Now you want to know whether this could be true or not.
Well there is no real issue. The passive heatsink is not very good and the northbridge gets pretty warm. That would cause trouble if there is not a good airflow inside of your case. But getting to critical temp should only happen in cases with very bad or no ventilation at all. So the K9N very unlikely dies because of overheating. Of course it could when the inside temp gets far too hot what shouldn't happen. Besides you would get instabilities long before it would die. You don't need to worry the dead of the other guy's K9N has nothing to do with a general K9N issue.
    Thanx for answer....

  • Black screen after BIOS update on K9N Neo V2, help pls?

    Hi guys!
    I have K9N Neo V2 motherboard and Athlon X2 5400, I've decided to upgrade and bought Phenom x4 9750.
So I've updated the bios to 3.0O from https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=124305.0 using the instruction, it went fine, I've been using it for a week but found out some bugs (windows blue screen and applications and OS hangups), then I got to restore OS from acronis true image - failed. And then I decided to check if the new bios supports my old athlon or not, I've changed the CPU and started - failed, dark screen no bios, I plugged back Phenom and now it also is not working :((. Have no idea why and what to do now..
Would really appreciate any suggestions and help.
    Thank you in advance

Yesterday I recorded the Bios of another version (Ultra), in my K9N Neo-F. It recorded correctly, the MoBo starts, enters in the Bios with all the options of the Ultra, but when I leave and it normally has to read the HD or floppy, he stops. Don´t freeze, just tries to make the verification of some component of the Ultra that the Neo-F does not have. What I can make, since I do not have as to rewrite the certain Bios, since it stops before reading the floppy?
If I disable the correct option in Bios, it will work?

no idea for Abit KN9S, to your main question again don't think MSI will add more OC options in futures BIOS in that board, but that is my guess only.

  • K8n neo bios 1.4 temps and cool n quiet

    Hi,
I recently flashed to bios 1.4 and it has been fine thus far.  However I have two issues that may be related to this new bios.
Windows XP utilties (mbm, sandra, speedfan, even corecell) all report my temps to be in the mid 30 degrees C, however the bios reports them as 45 degrees, which should I trust?
Also I think I've gotten half of cool n quiet working, vcore is down when cpu is not doing intensive work and so is the multiplier, making it run approx 1 GHz give or take.  However, I believe that my AMD stock fan always spins around the same speed (approx 3200 rpm), regardless whether the cpu is doing intensive work or idles, is something wrong?  I have the cool, wheres the quiet where my fan is supposed to slow down?
    Any help is appreciated!

well the temperature in bios is very likely to to be above of that in windows, because cool n quiet doesnt work in bios and processor runs at normal frequencies there. The fan speed problem can be either of two things i know, first is that you haven't enabled smart cpu fan in bios and other is if you go to standby and then resume, it seems that cool n quiet works after it but mobo doesn't control the fan speed after standby. These are just some things i have noticed. The bios 1.4 is very good btw (atleast for normal use, i dont't overclock so no idea about that).

  • K9N Neo ver 1.0 - no boot

    Here's my specs
    Athlon X2 5600+
    MSI K9N Neo ver 1.0
    2GB Corsair XMS 6400 RAM
    I have a Radeon x1800xt and a HD4850 (Gainward GS).
When I replaced the X1800XT with the HD4850 a few months ago I had problems with the new graphics card constantly having to be reseated in the PCI-E slot to get it working.
Last night after not having turned on the PC for 2 weeks, I got a blue screen of death while trying to boot into XP and when I tried to boot into Vista it froze the very second the Vista loading screen came up.
This morning when I tried to boot the PC there was no video feed at all and I heard no POST beeps. I replaced the HD4850 with the old X1800XT and tried booting up with that installed. No joy, the X1800XTs fan just spins at full load and nothing happens.
I tried to boot up with no video card installed to see would I get the "no video card installed" 7 beeps error from the motherboard but nothing.
Ok as I was typing this post I tried it one more time and I got the 7 beeps, installed the X1800XT and it's after booting properly. It's giving me a warning message "Previous performance of overclocking failed, and the system is restored to the default settings".
I used to get that message every now and again when I needed to reseat the HD4850.
Maybe it's just me, but it feels like things only work when the components are warmed up a little bit.
So what do you think is the route cause of these problems? Faulty motherboard? faulty graphics cards?

    PSU - Hiper Type M 530W
    +3.3v 0.5A - 28A
    +5v    2A - 34A
    +12V1  1A - 18A
    +12V2  1A - 17A
    System not working again btw.
If I remove the RAM and CPU and only have the motherboard connected to the PSU should it give me a specific beep code error, or will it stay silent?

  • K8N Neo FSR, possible BIOS bug: setting Vcore with Cool'n Quiet enabled broken?

    Athlon 64 3400+, socket 754
    K8N Neo FSR, Pheonix-Award BIOS V1,5
    WinXP SP2
Having Cool'n Quiet disabled in BIOS setup, CPU core voltage adjustment
using 'Adjust CPU VID' below the Athlon 64 default 1,5V core voltage
    works like a charm. Fine!
But with Cool'n Quiet enabled in BIOS setup (and WinXP), under load the
CPU core voltage raises to 1,5V in any case, independently of what I did
define in BIOS setup with 'Adjust CPU VID' (e.g. 1,4V). Software tools setting
Vcore like Core Center are not running.
So I can choose to either run a silent system in idle mode with Cool'n Quiet
enabled or under heavy CPU load with Cool'n Quiet disabled but Vcore
reduced :-( Am I missing something or does it rather look like a BIOS
    bug?
    Greetings, Falo

As undervolting is not considured standard operating proceedures then how can it be considured a bug.
nor is overclocking but MSI mobo manual reads 'This motherboard is designed to support overclocking.'
So this mobo is designed for supporting at least one non standard operating procedure
Seriously, if BIOS offers a feature I suppose it to work as expected.

  • K9N Neo-F, just over a week old and now won't boot.

Having trouble with a new build using a MSI K9N Neo-F motherboard.  I suspect my Motherboard is faulty :( and plan on sending it back to Newegg for replacement unless someone has something else for me to try.  Here’s the original configuration:
    MSI K9N Neo-F motherboard (MS-7260 Ver 1.0 w/ 1.3 BIOS)
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (65W – 2.4 GHz Windsor ADO4600CUBOX)
    Gskill F2-6400CL4D-2GBPK (DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 @ 1.9~2.0V)
Gigabyte GV-NX76T256D-RH (GeForce 7600 GT) video card
    Rosewill AP-500X (3.3V 30A, 5V 45A, 12V 22A)
    NEC ND-3520A CD/DVD Burner
    Seagate ST3320620AS SATA2 hard drive
For the first few days, everything appeared to work ok (though I had to leave the SATA 150 compatibility jumper on the hard drive in order for the motherboard to recognize it  ).  After day 3, it started locking up randomly (no blue screen) and restarting automatically, both while under high load and virtually no load at all.  Past day 5, it’s now to the point where it locks up even in the BIOS, and that’s only when I can get it to POST (otherwise, all I get is fan spinning and a blank screen, not even a beep).
The first thing I tried after day 5 was replacing the PSU with a Silverstone SST-ST56F 560 W PSU I have on hand for another build (this PSU is extremely well made and heavy by the way  ).  I figured this 560W monster could easily power the setup above, however the setup remained as unstable as ever.  I did notice in the BIOS while looking at the voltages before it locked up that the Vcore is jumping all over the place, from 1.240V to 1.372V!   I’ve built a fair share of A64 setups and never seen anything like this before.  It seems to point to a failure of a power regulator on the motherboard, just hope it didn’t damage my CPU as a result.
Next suspect was the memory, which I memtested overnight on another AM2 board and passed with no errors.  However, I read on a few other forums that the nVidia 550MCP chipset on the board doesn’t like RAM with a Tras under 15, so I swapped the RAM for another set of Gskill I had on hand (F2-6400CL5D-1GBNQ, DDR2-800 5-5-5-15 @ 1.8~1.9V) and reset the CMOS.  Unfortunately still no luck, it won’t POST half the time and when it does, it locks up less than a minute later while still in the BIOS.
My last shot was removing the 7600GT video card and replacing it with an old Matrox Milenium PCI one I had laying around.  My theory was not only to eliminate the video card from the list of suspects, but also the high power draw on the board that PCIe video cards tend to have.  However, it still fails to POST half the time.  Does anyone have any suggestions of things for me to try before sending back?  Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for quick replies guys!
Bosskiller - Yes, I tested both memory kits on another AM2 motherboard (Asus M2N) for ~24 hours each and both passed with no errors.  I tried setting the Vdim to 2.1 volts in the BIOS (while I was still able to get it to POST fully), but no luck.  However, since it's gotten very unstable and I reset the CMOS, the Vdim is probably back at the default 1.8 volts.  If I could just get it stable enough to make changes in the BIOS without it locking up, at least that would be an improvement.
BAS - As mentioned, I tried using a Silverstone 560W PSU I had on hand with no luck either, that's when I noticed the big fluctuations in Vcore.  Speaking of which, are such fluctuation in the Vcore normal?  I've read several contradictor forum post on the topic and don't know if this is "normal" behavior for the k9n neo-f.
    Thanks again in advance.

  • Front panel audio jack is not working on K9N Neo V2

My front panel audio jack is not working on K9N Neo V2. I check the JAUD1 cable and it appears to be connected to the front panel audio jack. My soundcard driver cannot detect any gadgets when I plug it in the front panel. My audio drivers and BIOS are up to date.  Is there any known solution to this? My computer is only a few months old and I have not tried the front audio jack until recently. I'm on Vista home premium btw.
Also, I've got another problem, my processor is AMD 64x2 4400+ overclocked to 2.63Ghz. I've been using that clock value ever since I built this computer and stress tested the processor and found that it would not cause any problems like hanging or overheating. However, I recently decided the need for AMD's Cool & Quiet technology and enabled it. It caused BSODs every few days or per week that didn't happen before. I tried it with the default clock value and it still causes BSODs. Can someone help me?

    Quote
Thanks. Its ironic that disabling it actually enables it.
It has to day with the front panel audio wiring of your case.  How many wires are there that can be connected to the board's pin header?

    Sound quality isn't very good
Can you be more descriptive?  Is the quality better if you plug the headphone into one of the jack at the back panel?  (Also, make sure you tell the Realtek HD Audio Manager, that a headphone is connected (and not regular speakers).
