K9N Platinum, 4GB of RAM, XP shows 3.25GB

I have a K9N Platinum with 4 sticks of 1024MB Corsair.  On POST it detects full 4096MB of memory.  CPU-Z also shows 4GB.
However, in XP, right-click My Computer, properties, it shows 3.25GB of RAM.
Now, I did some googling and the solution to this seems to be that you must enable H/W memory hole remapping in the BIOS.  However, the only option I see in my BIOS (v1.1) is Software Memory Hole.  I have tried enabling and disabling this, but it has no effect -- XP still shows only 3.25GB.
So I guess I am wondering if there is a newer BIOS available that has the H/W memory hole option and hopefully that might solve my problem.
Any other suggestions or insights?

Win XP Pro (32 bit) will only show 3.25GB of RAM, the rest is then used as virtual memory (as far as i am aware) If you install 8GB of RAM, while in Win XP Pro (32 bit) it will only see 3.25GB. If it doesnt show that and you have installed more than 2GB, you may need to use the /3GB switch in the boot loader of Win XP Pro.
The BIOS should see the full amount of RAM anyway.

the problem is i cant boot up into the bios screen. everytime i turn on the pc the monitor doesnt seem to show the computers there, just shows the amber light as if on sleep mode. first off i tried the mobo with just the cpu and graphics card, and still nothin. then the graphics card, cpu, and ram and no results. then just no ram, no cpu and no graphics card to test if the motherboard will give me a beep. i didnt get any beep whatsoever. i also tried this on multiple monitors and still no prevail.
    any help would be appreciated

uhh how can i find out what the amps are? also im sure the ram isnt the problem since the motherboard doesnt even beep with or w/o memory... but who knows?? so i am somewhat narrowed down to the motherboard or the psu..
on the PSU sticker. (read +12V xx Ampers)
move your memory stick to the 1st orange slot DIMM3, close to the CPU socket.
remove power cord from the PSU, hit power button several time to drain caps electrify, touch with hands some metal for ES discharge, and Clear CMOS.
move jumper(JBAT1, green jumper near to the battery) to Clear Data position, wait 1 minute, then move jumper to the Keep Data position:
pull back power cord, ensure all power cables are connected to the mainboard.(24 ATX connector, 4pin JPW1, and 4pin HDD style JPW2) then  turn on PC.
    post back results.

  • K9N PLATINUM RAM Issue

    Hello there,

    Issue:
Installed 4GB of RAM and on boot-RAMcheck shows 4BG RAM OK.
Windows sees and reports this: Physical Memory, Total: 3070MB
I removed one by one the sticks and also swapped slots but the result is always the same.
    Any ideas?

You are using a 32bit version of Windows.  A 32bit operating system provides an address decode space of 4GB.  Not all of the address space can be used for the system memory.  Part of it needs to be reserved for addressing other devices (so that they can function).  That is why it is actually impossible to full address 4GB of RAM with a 32bit OS.  The amount of usable memory may very between 2.5 and 3.5 GB, depending on the system configuration.
Solution:  Use a 64bit operating system.

I have the K9N Platinum motherboard aswell, and the standard DDR voltage is 1.80
OK, let me make it clear. there is no standard voltage on the mobos. the default voltage depends on the memory you are using. different memory modules will default at different voltages, as per the data that the manufacturer placed in their SPDs.
if you are talking about JEDEC default voltage for DDR2, then yes, it is 1.8V, with a maximum of 2.3V. you can read about timings and voltages for the JEDEC standard here:

  • Control Panel shows only 4GB of RAM but product specs say I should have 8GB

My HP Pavilion Elite HPE-250f desktop is supposed to have 8GB of RAM factory installed, but the control panel only shows 4GB. When I run diagnostics with the Support Assistant software it says everything is working fine but also shows only 4GB of RAM. I've had the computer for several months now and the warranty recently expired. In the past I noticed it said 4GB and thought I must have purchased a computer with only 4GB, but it always seemed odd to me. I looked up the specs online and it says the HPE-250f has 8GB, and it also says 8GB on the box it came in. I have not made any modifications to the computer, and have never opened the cabinet. I am hesitant to open the cabinet, but don't feel I should have to pay a lot of money to figure this out.

    Hi,
Shut down the PC.  Tap away at f10 as soon as you start the PC to enter the Bios Menu - on the first page, you should be able to see the ammount of physical ram installed.

  • K9N Diamond Not Recognizing 4GB of RAM

I recently decided to get another kit of 2 x 1GB of RAM (since they're so cheap nowadays), but somehow it's not being reported during bootup that I now have 4GB.
RAM settings are all set to defaults in the BIOS.  I've tried a combination of my old set with one and the other sticks from the new set.  Boots up ok, but where's the other 1GB?
Funny thing is, CPU-Z reports that I have 4GB, so does the system info section of the Nvidia Control Panel.
    Am I missing something here?

Look for option "SoftWare Memory hole" and Enable it, in "Memory Configuration" under "Cell Menu", location BIOS.
But also you have to use x64bit OS, read here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108883.0

  • K9n platinum voltage question

    Hello everyone,
I'm new to the boards and I hope someone can help me out.
Let me throw my specs out first:
    mobo: msi k9n platinum 1.0 (bios 1.5)  (ms-7250-20)
cpu:   opteron 1212  (voltage should be 1.3/1.35)
    ram:   ocz 6400 platinum (5,5,5,15 2t) (2.1v)
    gfx:    evga 7800gt
    ps:     sunbeamtech 550w(+3.3v=28A, +5v=36A,+12v1=20A,+12v2=18A(30A/35*A))
This board does have the shut down problems, but I have done the work arounds and fixed 98% of them(memory timings were the most important to fix these)
My question is how do I set the volage for the cpu? I know go into the cell menu->cpu freq config->and change the voltage...but when I set it to 1.3~1.35, the cpu voltage in the H/W monitor & on the main cell menu page will show a .28 voltage increase. My cpu temps are also through the roof (35 idle/ 68+ load).
Right now I have my cpu voltage set at 1.25 and it seems mostly stable, but the cpu Vcore shows 1.528v in H/W monitor, and cell menu.
Also if I keep my voltage at 1.2 my temps are very low (20 idle/ 38 load)
When I use cpu-z it shows the voltage that I actually set.
Anyone have an answer or fix?
Thanks for any and all replies.

leave CPU vid to Auto, you no need to change CPU vcore. voltage moving -/+ 0.05 is normal.
take care about CPU temp... your CPU is overheating and become instable, 68C+ is very high... re seat CPU ensure its mounted well, aplly new thermal paste, but do not put too much!! here are few wrong examples:
your under load temp should not exceed 55C. you may need to get better CPU cooler if no change.

  • Planning To buy MSI K9N Platinum + AMD X2 3800+

    Hello everyone,
as the title as Iam planning to buy a MSI K9N Platinum board with an AMD X2 3800+ for a new system build. Ive been out of the game for a while, the last time I was really up to date on computer technology is when the AMD XP 2500+ Barton was the hottest thing on the market, some what of a new comer to dual core technology. I have a few questions, mainly about the board it self. I did a little searching and that answered some of my question but I have a few more.
Ive read a lot about the shutdown problems from the board when transferring large files or burning DVDs. I have a few questions about that.
From what I see so far, this is a very informative forum and I appreciate any and all information. So here goes:
    1) It says on the MSI website that the ram slot for this motherboard is at 1.8 volts. The ram Iam planning to get is OCZ Platinum EL XTC PC2-6400 1GB 2X512 DDR2 CL4-5-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit. On the OCZ website it says that the ram modules run at 2.1 volts. My Question is if I stick this ram in the mother board will it boot long enough for me to go into the bios and change the ram voltage to 2.1 volts?
    2) Now Ive read about the shutdown problems with this board. Ive seen a lot of people up the VCore to 1.35V. If I do this along with a bios flash, will this take care of the problems?
    3) Now the dealer that Iam buying my PC from didn't have this board in stock for the last week. He just got them in 2 days ago this week. Therefore Iam assuming he has the lastest version of these boards. Now are these problems taken care of on the new version of these boards? If not what can I do to get rid of them?
    4) Is there anything else I should know about this motherboard?
    Thanks for the the help.

Yes, you could set up manually the voltage to 2.1v perfectly I've got one k9nsli p, with an amdx2 3800+ whit 2gb ddr2 (512x4 twins pack corsair xms2 ddr2 800) that works at 1,9v

My shutdowns problems was resolved by unnistallin' nvidia IDE controller, nothing about vcore or flashin bios... I keep original bios version 1.0 & Core center shows vcore at 1.33v

Good question... 2morrow I'll check on the box of my k9 the part number and will post it

The first week, I was desire burn my k9  shutdowns... shutdowns.... shutdowns... after I find the cause of that ShiX$/#(! (nvidi IDesuxs controller) my life is happy!

  • K9N Platinum and OCZ2P8001GK

Hi. I bought 2 OCZ PC2-6400 512MB DIMM (OCZ2P8001GK) and I am thinking of buying the MSI K9N Platinum (non-SLI) board to run with AMD Athlon X2 3800+. Will it be any compatibility problems running the system with those memory modules? [Running at stock speed (at least), both CPU and RAM (800)].
    thnx for any info.

    amd athlon x2 3800+ am2
    msi k9n platinum ver1.0
    ocz ddr2 800 platinum * 2
    psu thermaltake TR2-550PP
    gainward 7600GS
    wdc 250gb ks sata2
    nec 3550A dvd-r
    floppy
    hec-6ar6 case
i plugged all the above together, inserted only one ram module in dimm no2 socket and the system boot just fine...the cpu clock on memtest86+ v1.65 says athlon x2 1005mhz, is that correct?i will let memtest run for half an hour and then plug in the second ram module. the m/b has bios version 1.0 (!!) but the memory is normally recognized at 800 mhz as it should be.more soon...

  • K9N Platinum bios version & cpu support

    Hi!
I need some help to clear up some questions regarding my MB.
MB: K9N Platinum, Cpu-z states my bios version is 080014, but i cant see it in the bios list for my MB, so what version is it?
Im currently running with a Athlon X2 5200+ Windsor, and i have got my hands on an Athlon X2 6400+ Black Edition, as far as i can see my MB is supporting that cpu, but is my current bios up to date for the cpu?
I have downloaded the MSI usb bios flashtool and i have set it up, and it boots in dos, but when i run memtest the program just says in one line memtest and a flashing + nothing more happens (i have left the pc for about 3-4min but no change) i feel that im starting to push my luck, and i dont want to kill this MB since its my work and gaming rig.
    System spec:
    MB: K9N Platinum
    CPU: Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (want to install Athlon 64 x2 6400+ BE ID: ADX6400IAA6CZ)

Memtest do have some bugs. You can do test with Orthos instead:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=103598.msg760534#msg760534
To check is your system is stable or not.
Once done you can ignore Memtest when asking after booting from the USB key
Also leave 1 memory stick only temporary in the 1st DIMM close to CPU socket before BIOS flash.[put remaining sticks back when BIOS flash is done/finished].

  • K9N Platinum Supported CPU's

    Hi everyone,
My question is fairly straightforward.  I currently have a MSI K9N Platinum AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP in my HTPC.  Long story short I found out that my CPU was not powerful enough to decode 1080p content so I have purchased a new CPU, a  AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103228
According to the CPU support list here:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&prod_no=252&maincat_no=1
I should be able to use this processor with my motherboard with BIOS 1.A, so I downloaded Live Update and flashed the BIOS to 1.A (I believe it now shows it as 1.10, though I am not sure where that is noted in POST) in preparation for the new CPU (the flash went fine).
I am wondering if anyone has any experience using this motherboard with this CPU?  Is it truly compatible or the CPU simply too new an edition for my motherboard?  I can probably still cancel my order and get a 5600+ or equivalent if necessary.
    I appreciate any feedback/responses.

I bet it's your videocard not handling it very well.
Somewhere rings a bell that nVidia is lacking hardware decoding with videocards, but can't remember exactly what it was.
Well that is the long story short part  :D.  In a nutshell yes it is my video card, I have a 7900GT and essentially nvidia's purevideo decoder for HD content has NEVER worked properly.  This basically means that the CPU has to handle the entire decoding load, which my old CPU is incapable of doing (hence all the stuttering, audio/video out of sync issues I get).  Basically I had two options:
    A) Buy an ATI, one of the 3xxx series that actually does x264 decoding
    B) Replace the CPU with a faster/better/dual core one (many codecs can now use dual-core CPU's for decoding HD content)
In the end I made the decision to replace the CPU to resolve the problem because while buying a 3xxx series card does appear to work WONDERS for HD content decodes (it reduces the CPU load to 5-10% in some cases) if the file is encoded in some non-standard way that the GPU decoder doesn't recognize the load is going straight back to the CPU (like my Nvidia 7900GT is doing).  This way I figure I get a better CPU and it should be able to muscle it's way through decoding anything I throw at it.  If I need to replace the GPU someday or want to do it in order to reduce the load on the CPU I can always look into one of the 3xxx series (I hear that the nvidia 8600's might actually do some HD decoding as well) though I have really become skeptical of ATI cards lately.

  • K9n Platinum Won't Post!!! Memory Incompatible or Mobo failure???

Like so many others, I am having trouble with my K9N PLatinum.  When I turn the system on, everything powers on, CPU fan, case fans, leds.  It begins to post, no video, but the D bracket just hangs on (1, 3, 4, red and 2, green).  I have tried all of the usual troubleshooting.  Using just one stick of memory in each DIMM slot, reseating CPU, only having CPU/memory/video card plugged in.  I even went and bought some cheap RAM from a local retailer and the same thing, D bracket just hangs.  Taking out battery, resetting CMOS switch, etc.  This build has been very frustrating.  I have read there are BIOS updates, but have never updated bios before.  How would I do an update when the system won't even post?  PLEASE HELP!!!

I got it to post and install windows on the Kingston valueram.  I did a live update via MSI's website to BIOS version 1.2.  But version 1.2 would still not post using my OCZ memory.  I wanted to try to flash the beta 1.31 bios, ut I am having difficulty flashing the beta 1.31 bios version ins DOS mode.  Has anyone else done this?  Also, when is MSI going to put the newest bios version up for Live Update.  That would make a lot of unsatisfied customers, happy.  I was about ready to return my board and go ASUS.  But I wanted to stick it out with MSI because I like you guys the best!  Any info on flashing bios would be great!
