K9N platinum - AHCI for Intel x25 SSD

Hello... I intend to set up an 80Gb Intel x25 SSD 2nd Gen (Win 7 - 64bit) on my system in a week or so its a K9N platinum v1, apparently I need AHCI set on the SATA channel - looking through the BIOS setup (Rev1.8) I can't seam to find this option - would someone be kind enough to advise.

I'm planning on buying a MSI K9N Platinum mainboard for the purpose of a HTPC with plenty of storage. I was planning on buying either 3 500GB drives or 3 750 GB drives as budget allows. Since this board holds 6 SATA II connections it is ideal for adding more disks later when prices drop a bit. I would like to use RAID5 for data protection and am wondering if I can expand the raid partition later when I add more drives to the PC.

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.

HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating

Lenovo ideapad u310 with 24 GB SSD Partition , only 4GB has been configured as Hibernate partition for Intel rapid start, rest of the 18.36 GB has been labelled as Healthy(Primary partition).Can this 18.36 GB of SSD be configured to store data files on it without affecting Intel rapid start.

I think I have discovered the answer to my own question!
I have disabled Adobe Reader plug-in, and can now see PDFs in Chrome.
(Steps: Chrome Menu, Settings option, Click Advanced Settings link, then Content Settings button, then select Disable Individual Plug-Ins, and a list of plug-ins is offered to enable or disable).
I then get a different result depending on whether or not Chrome PDF viewer is enabled - with it enabled I see the PDF document in Chrome, or with it disabled then the option is offered to download it, but either way I can get it it via Chrome without having to run Internet explorer in another browser window.

Unable to use Intel 530 SSD with M5400

Hello!
I finally decided to write over here, after reading and viewing a lot of forums lately on this subject.
Context:
I have an Lenovo M5400 (but don't think this is definitory to the problem, as I've seen that the same simptoms seem to exist to other lenovo models as well) with the SSHD drive. I bought an Intel 530 SSD (don't think the brand mathers either) and wanted to replace the SSHD with it.
Upon replacing the original drive with the SSD, in order to make a clean windows install, the Windows 8 installer is unable to correctly detect my drive.
The drive is visible in the BIOS (at times?!) and seems to interfere somehow with the booting process, as sometimes, the boot stucks with a blank screen and the green light of the drive is on permanently. (this doesn't happen all the time).
What I tried:
1) At first, I had the drive unitialized: no GPT or MBR, no partitions on it. I tried to install it as such, but failed. It was not visible to the Windows installer, only in BIOS, in the boot order, I could see it. This was done in BIOS legacy mode.
2) I tried loading drivers in the Windows installer, via the "Load driver" option, when you get the message "W couldn't find any drives" or something like that. That was unsuccessful with the following: a) lenovo ahci drivers, from the online driver store, b) my previous windows drivers, which I took on a USB stick, c) some drivers from intel site.
3) At this point, the Intel firmware update bootable tool was not seeing my drive either.
4) I then initialized my drive by connecting it via a SATA-to-USB cable to my computer and repeated step 2), with no success still. I initialized it as MBR but I doubt that initializing it as GPT would have made a diffrence. I tried both with creating a primary and active partition and with leaving the drive initialized with all the space unallocated. No success.
5) I tried to update lenovo BIOS, because I suspect it's the cause of the problem, but was unable to do so. Downloaded the bios utility but it gives me an error "Bios folder ... ". With the bootable bios cd, it doesn't work: it doesn't boot. Has anyone managed to flash a newer bios? There is one posted on 09/30/2013 on the site, and my current one is 09/26/2013, as shown in BIOS.
6) I then fiddled with various BIOS modes: uefi, legacy, both with priority, but with no success.
At one point, I managed to see the drive in the windows installer, it was in UEFI mode only, with WIn 8 Optimized defaults ( I think) but I feared that it was just a single happening and didn't do anything, instead tried to see which settings worked in order to be able to reproduce this. I completly lost my chance, as after that, I didn't see the drive again in the windows installer. When it worked, I didn't have to load any driver. It saw it as MBR and prompted to format is as GPT, in order to use with UEFI booting.
The things I noticed:
On some occasions, in the bios boot order menu, the drive is identified as an Intel ssd, and on others just as an generic ATA HDD. I think there is a bad link between those two. When I reboot, restart, on some occasions I see it as the Intel drive and on others as the generic one. I think that in the case of generic drive, the windows installer has no chance on recognizing it.
When it is seen in the bios though, I get all sort of problems when trying to boot a CD or USB, as it seems to ignore them and get stuck in the boot process. I think that in this situations it correctly detects the SSD, if I were to look in the BIOS. But when I try to boot the CD or the USB in these situations, it just stucks with the green drive light permanently on, and with the CPU working on something ( I hear the fans starting) and the boot stops here indefinetly. I have to restart, and then, depending on the case, I get the same results, or I can boot the CD but don't find the drive.
I don't know by what chance I managed to "capture" it once in the windows installer but think this should be the common case.
After all these, what I suspect is that the Lenovo BIOS is broken somehow. It messes up with the boot order, because although I have priority for the DVD, the boot gets stuck on trying to do something with the SSD, as described above.
I am in the situation of returning the SSD back to the shop, as it is unusable with the current Lenovo m5400 motherboard/bios or whatever other hardware interferes with making it properly work ( ahci controller?).
I am very upset by this, and have seen that on these very boards, there are other posts as well, not on this model, but on other lenovo models, with the same scenarios and simptopms as mine, which didn't get any solution.
So, is there an answer to my problem? To update the BIOS? How to make the BIOS to not mess up with the boot order and get stuck? I tried all the possible combinations with no success and it's really frustrating.
Another update:
A lot of people seem to be having problem with the particular Intel 530 SSD. So this issue may not be related only to the motherboard/bios. I will post links to the corresponding threads from the intel boards:

Does anyone have any idea or hint if using other software for initializing the SSD than Computer Management/diskpart is of any help? Like EASUS partition manager or Gparted? Maybe the disk isn't partitioned correctly.
The disk isn't detected as an Intel SSD with the SATA-to-USB cable, instead being masked by it. Maybe this is another problem?

I tried to connect OCZ Vertex 2 60GBSSD but I failed. It has the same conntroller SandForce but the older generation.
Maybe that's the problem?
I was unable to install it on Windows 8.1, when I switched to the BIOS to ACHI mode Capability mode. But later he again loaded with it, then the BIOS will not see it to be.
I think the problem in the BIOS! I have 2.03 the latest.

Tweaks for OS after SSD installation

I believe there are some SSD users around. Any tweaks are done on the OS? or any recommended/proven settings could be used? What are your opinions and views? Really appreciate your feedback.(New SSD user)

FWIW, I think the points made by mac@home are valid -- a 'zero data' erase is not likely to be a substitute for TRIM functionality & probably will just do exactly what users of SSD's should avoid, which is unnecessarily subjecting SSD data cells to wear. (They do wear out, which is why "overprovisioning" & wear leveling techniques are provided in SSD's.) It seems to me that a 'zero data' erase would defeat the purpose of wear leveling; I would not do it without more research.
From what I can tell, at least the original Intel X25-series SSD's Apple provided as OEM parts do not support TRIM & were engineered to perform well without it. (I have no idea about the latest, supposedly Toshiba supplied ones.) The newer SSD's, especially those using the 'Sandforce' controllers, are higher performance but without TRIM that performance will degrade over time.
The bottom line is that SSD's cannot not (as yet anyway) be treated as exact aftermarket replacements for conventional hard drives in Macs running OS X. The Apple OEM parts are engineered to be the closest approach to that. If you use something else, you may have slightly crossed over the line from the cutting to the bleeding edge, or at least into DIY territory with the associated need for self-support & product-specific research to get the best results.

Is Intel 160GB SSD in X220 SATA 3?

Anyone know if the X220's optional Intel 160GB SSd is SATA 3 yet?

Lenovo does not currently ship any SATA 3 drives. It is probably either the X25-M or an Intel 320 series. There have been reports of some recent orders shipping with a special (with a part number suffix) 320.
Edit: FYI the Intel 320 is only a SATA II SSD. The Intel 510 SSD is SATA III and does not come in a 160GB version.

How to enable AHCI for HP ENVY TouchSmart m6-k015dx Sleekbook

Hello,
I upgraded my hard drive to a SSD and that is done. Laptop works fine. Installed the Samsung SSD software and it says I need to Enable AHCI to get the SSD running at full potential.
I searched the BIOS and do not see anyplace to change this. I then went to the Device Manager in Windows 8.1and I do not see any ATA/SATA controller. All I see is a RAID controller. RAID controller in a laptop?
Can someone tell me how to enable the AHCI?

Hi:
Because your notebook is a consumer notebook there is no way to change the BIOS setting to AHCI.
The BIOS is defaulted to RAID on your model series because some models come with one of those hybid drives with a SSD cache and for some technical reason those have to be configured in RAID 0 mode in order for the setup to work right.
It is my understanding that if you install the latest Intel RST driver, that is supposed to provide TRIM support for SSD's starting with the Intel Series 7 chipset, and yours has the series 8, so it should have full support for using an SSD even in RAID mode.

K9N Platinum and OCZ2P8001GK

Hi. I bought 2 OCZ PC2-6400 512MB DIMM (OCZ2P8001GK) and I am thinking of buying the MSI K9N Platinum (non-SLI) board to run with AMD Athlon X2 3800+. Will it be any compatibility problems running the system with those memory modules? [Running at stock speed (at least), both CPU and RAM (800)].

i plugged all the above together, inserted only one ram module in dimm no2 socket and the system boot just fine...the cpu clock on memtest86+ v1.65 says athlon x2 1005mhz, is that correct?i will let memtest run for half an hour and then plug in the second ram module. the m/b has bios version 1.0 (!!) but the memory is normally recognized at 800 mhz as it should be.more soon...

K9N Platinum Beta Bios?

Can anyone tell me or show me if there is a new beta bios out for the K9N Platinum?
Right now I'm using beta 1.45 and it works great! Except...I just want something that will fix the stupid cpu temp reading!!!

K9N Platinum: upgrade to X2 5600+ or X2 6400+?

Hi. This is my first post. I would like to upgrade my CPU on my K9N Platinum and I have a couple of questions:
1. I have narrowed down to two: X2 5600+ (89w) or X2 6400+ (125w)?
- both have the same L2 cache, but the speed and wattage differ
- I play some games and some video encoding
2. Will the power supply that I have be sufficient for the X2 6400+ and support a video card upgrade to a GeForce 8800 series?

I have a XP1700+ In a MSI K7N2 Delta L, which is default 1.47 and I have had it at 2.0 for nearly four years, aftermarket Copper Core air cooler. The 5000+ Blackie's that I have are at a 16 Multiplier for 3.2 speed. I have one in a abit KN9 SLI and the other in my MSI K9A2 CF both run cool. I had a Overclocked ATI 9500 Pro and it died after two and a half years, but I really had it cranked, so yes and no to your question. Good cooling alleviates most of the possible damage. If you are Cool then you are usually okay.

K9N Platinum onboard ethernet resource problem

I am having a problem getting my onboard ethernet to work on the MSI K9N Platinum motherboard.
The device manager is giving me Error Code 12 which stands for Not enough available resources.
I have tried everything short of reinstalling Windows to get this resolved. This is a fresh windows install. Right after the install I installed the chipset drivers. Since then I have reinstalled the drivers, disabled anything that I am not using in the device manager, and even disabled everything but the onboard lan and IDE controller in the bios. Nothing has worked.
Does anybody know what I could do to get the onboard ethernet to work?
Specs:
AMD AM2 3800X2
MSI K9N Platinum (non-SLI)
Old Nvidia PCI graphics card (X1800XT is not working)
Western Digital IDE 80 gig hard drive
Generic DVD burner
XCLIO 450 watt power supply

Sounds to me windows didn't install the correct HAL ,meaning you may have had wrong bios settings for ACPI & MPS.

K9N Platinum Sli trouble

so i have assembled my new system:
Athlon 64 x2 AM2 4200+
Zalman CNPS9500
K9N Platinum Sli
OCZ DDR2 PC2-5400 667MHz EL Gold Edition 2GB Dual Channel Kit
XFX Geforce 7600GT 256mb XXX edition (another one will be added today for SLI)
a SATA drive and a DVD burner (these arent important for the issue)
temps = idle 30-34 c, load - no idea havent checked that yet

ever since ive assembled the system i ran into some strange thing - during the changing of setting in the BIOS it froze a few times.
Neverthless i was able to run the system, install windows, start to install other software (yesterday)
and today when i turned on the system, windows booted up, and sudenly it restarts and freezes up in pre bios stage...
Reset or Shutdown resulted in power up, but nothing happening, the monitor did even got out of standby...
after a few tries, and about ten minutes without power, it started up and went to a bios stage, giving a CMOS Bad Checksum Error... loaded bios with fail-safe settings, system worked fine and booted up windows... windows worked fine aswell, attempt to reboot and change the bios settings, gave a Bad Checksum from start and a freeze in bios. System is not getting to bios stage once again...
A Mobo problem that warrants a vist to the store, to return it?

trust me, enermax doesn't have problems with math. this is actually how it works. you cannot just add up the 12v rails to get the max amps on the 12v.

try to increase the memory voltage a bit. i think you should be safe up to 2.1V. if you still get errors in memtest, then you have a faulty memory module.

K9N Platinum: CPU upgrade = Random shutdowns..

I just installed a new AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ EE in my MSI K9N Platinum motherboard (MS-7250 v1.0, the 070 model according to the box). I had updated the BIOS to version 1.7 before installing the CPU. Anyhow, I got the CPU installed and it seemed to be running fine. Until I started playing my games. Upon playing fifteen (!!!) minutes of Day of Defeat, the system completely turned off. COMPLETELY. No error messages. I check core temp's log to make sure the CPU wasnt overheating; it wasnt. The max temp was 38C on one of the cores. Just to make sure the CPU wasnt the problem, I ran two instances of prime95 for 5 hours and there were no calculation errors whatsoever. I also ran 3-4 loops of SuperPi, using the 32M test. No errors.
I have come to the conclusion that it must be the motherboard, and possibly it does not like the CPU. Or else it is having the same random shutdown problems as many other K9N Platinum/Ultra boards are experiencing. From what i have read, this issue only relates to boards that are 040, 050, or 060 models. I have a 070 model, and I AM GETTING THIS PROBLEM!!

well, i know that ACPI has to do with power saving features.

K9N Platinum bios version & cpu support

I need some help to clear up some questions regarding my MB.
MB: K9N Platinum, Cpu-z states my bios version is 080014, but i cant see it in the bios list for my MB, so what version is it?
Im currently running with a Athlon X2 5200+ Windsor, and i have got my hands on an Athlon X2 6400+ Black Edition, as far as i can see my MB is supporting that cpu, but is my current bios up to date for the cpu?
I have downloaded the MSI usb bios flashtool and i have set it up, and it boots in dos, but when i run memtest the program just says in one line memtest and a flashing + nothing more happens (i have left the pc for about 3-4min but no change) i feel that im starting to push my luck, and i dont want to kill this MB since its my work and gaming rig.
System spec:

CPU: Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (want to install Athlon 64 x2 6400+ BE ID: ADX6400IAA6CZ)

Memtest do have some bugs. You can do test with Orthos instead:

To check is your system is stable or not.
Once done you can ignore Memtest when asking after booting from the USB key
Also leave 1 memory stick only temporary in the 1st DIMM close to CPU socket before BIOS flash.[put remaining sticks back when BIOS flash is done/finished].
