K9N SLI-F V2 problem with 1TB HD in bios

Hello all.
I am to build a new system. All parts are new just purchased over the net.
MB part# 601-7390-010B0806405072 with AMD 6000+ CPU
HD is Samsung HD103UJ
on POST it read A7390NMS Bio version 1.1
On the Bios it sees the Samsung HD but only as 8GB in size.
I checked the MSI website for bios update and for this MB 1.1 is the current version.
Tried different SATA cable, power cable and different SATA slots
Called MSI tech support in USA and was told MSI only tested SATA drives up to 500GB. But he said there should be no reason why it wouldn't work with 1TB.
I only have this one HD right now, so I can't even install Window XP.
Any suggestions or should I just go return the 1TB HD and get a 500GB version?

Right, but this is SATA drive, not PATA. Samsung isn't going to 'accidentally' put Master/Slave jumpers on a SATA drive.
Hard drives attached via USB mass storage controller specification do not depend on BIOS INT13 geometry translation support, except when booting from the USB storage drive or accessing it in a non-USB aware environment (e.g. DOS). In USB-aware environment (e.g. any modern OS), drive capacity support is handled entirely by the embedded USB-ATA/ATAPI bridge controller and firmware located in the USB enclosure. Ergo, nothing can be inferred about the MSI BIOS from the drive's behavior in an external USB enclosure, unless you attempted to boot from it or access it in DOS.
The drive's behavior in an external USB enclosure could suggest one of three possible things:
- the drive is defective
- the drive has buggy firmware
- the embedded controller or firmware in the external USB enclosure has some problem with drives this large
However, since the drive is acting up in BOTH scenarios, it points to the drive as the problem. Samsung drives are developing a reputation for having buggy firmware, particularly models over 750GB, which lends additional support to the drive as the most likely suspect. Test the drive by connecting it to another SATA controller, not USB or Firewire. Samsung's ES-Tool Utility may also be useful here:

Mac Pro (First Generation) problem with 1TB Seagate Barracuda

Hi Macianer,
I have a first generation Mac Pro which was sold with max. 750GB Hard drives for each bay. At this time I am grabbing for straws and maybe someone has any info on this problem.
I purchased 4 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives ( Model: ST31000340AS / Firmware: SD15 ), did a regular format after I purchased them ( GUID Partition Table, Journaled HFS+ File System). I am using 2 of them internally (they get quite hot and i didn't want to put all 4 of them in there) and two of them externally (backup purposes). The other two internal bays are covered by 2x 500GB Barracuda drives.
I put all four 1 TB hard drived through a 1 week stress test to make sure I am not dealing with bad apples. So far this practice served me well.
Now 2 weeks later one completely crashed (internal boot drive). It sounded to spin up alright but was not accessible at all. I went to BestBuy and GeekSquad said this drive is crashed and I returned it.
Since I had a backup I didn't worry too much. I put the back up hard drive in as the new boot drive (since it was a SuperDuper duplicat) it worked like a charm. Now the second hard drive starts temporarily freezing the system for 2-4 minutes and seems to get stuck showing the great colored ball of doom. After the freeze it continues to operate normal again and I am able to continue my work.
I ran the Disk Utility and I got the following message:
INVALID KEY LENGTH
VOLUME CHECK FAILED.
ERROR: FILESYSTEM VERIFY OR REPAIR FAILED.
It just seems weird, I never had problems with hard drives and now I get these problems with 3-4 week old hard drives.
I was in a chat with seagate support. First question to trouble shoot: Do you have access to a PC. My answer was no since Microsoft Vista I donated all of them to the Salvation Army. He asked if I formatted the hard drives low level and MBR with HFS+. I said since I do not have access to PC nor do I plan on using my hard drives for PC I formatted it regular with GUID and HFS+. I asked if there is any history of these drives that would help explain my experience. I was hoping for a recall or something of that sort or something that a firmware upgrade would remedy.
I guess my question is, is the first generation Mac Pro, even though it seems to format and run them fine, not able to handle 1TB hard drives on a daily basis. Or am I dealing with hard drive problems? The Seagate guy didn't seem to be of any help.
Any help is appreciated or even pointers that would help me in finding the problem.

Excellent questions, I too am looking at SSD.
Some things I know about SSD:
1. Intel recently released new firmware for their SSD drives to improve long term performance including Trim/Garbage collection.
2. SSD drives can be setup as SLC or MLC - SLC is faster read 2X, write 4X over MLC, however SLC is smaller capacity. SLC also has a longer life span.
3. Intel plans to have an 320GB X25-M (MLC) and a 128GB X25-E (SLC) out soon.
OSX does not fully support Trim and I'm not aware of any 3rd party software for OSX that helps in the garbage collection area. Diskeeper 2010 for Windows 7 provides full support for all variants of SSD, but nothing on the Mac side.
I'm probably going to wait for 2010 to see what comes out, SSD appears to be good news, but it still also seems to have issues. Given the cost of these drivers and the frequent firmware updates, a wait and see is my choice.
I've thought about going with a SAS RAID controller and 15K RAID drivers, but the cost/performance ratio comes out about the same and the 15K drives are noisey and power hungry but they're a "known" entity.

NEO4 Plat Sli SIL3231 Raid problem - Can't boot after BIOS Flash!

Hi, I have and Neo4 Platinum SLI. I had "the problem" a while back with the nVida raid where there was a hang on shutdown. I then created a RAID0 using my two Rators on the SIL3132 controller, and have three hitachi drives hooked up to SATA1 - SATA3. Back then, I had trouble getting my SIL3132 array to be the main boot volume. I could boot when no other drives were attached, but as soon as I attached them, I get the boot disk error after post. Somehow I got it to work, but not think this time, I flashed the BIOS and ran into the same problems, as the BIOS got reset.
First, I went in and re-enabled RAID on the sil3132 controller, and change the boot order to have the RAID voluime be the first boot device, and my other drivers be the next on down the line. Upon rebooting, my system hangs after verifying DMI pool at a blanksscreen for 5 - 10 minutes then gives my the "missing HAL.dll error". if I go back into the BIOS and disable SATA1/SATA2 and SATA3/SATA4 my computer boots just fine. I even completley disconnected my three drives an my system boots just fine. I have searched these forums and could not find anything close to my issue and wondered if it is something I am just missing in the setup. I will say that at POST my IDE devices has always read:
IDE Primary Master [None]
IDE Secondary Master [None]
IDE Primary Slave (my first DVD/R drive)
IDE Secondary Slave (My second DVD/R drive)
IDE Third Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fourth Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fifth Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Sixth Master [None]
Is this normal? all my hard drives are SATA. the raptors and three SATAII drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since the Nvida raid problem seems to have been fixed (as far as I read) I would like to go back to using the nVidia raid controller. I just need to back up my system first!

I have noted the same problem, with a USB Pen drive.
If I leave it plugged in and shut down, the next time I cold boot it tries to boot for the pen drive. What I found out the any time you add a drive before booting the BIOS places it at the top of the Hard Drive Priority list making it the boot drive. Same thing happens when I plug in a new SATA and does not mater where it is connected. So, what I have to do any time you add a drive with the power off you have to boot to BIOS reset the Hard drive priority list, then save, exit and reboot to boot from you windows drive.
I am sure this is a BIOS Bug, but MSI states that the way it should would work.

K9n neo 1.0 problems with compatibility of memory?

i have a k9n neo 1.0 with bios version 1.3 and linux ubuntu Linux ubux2 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Tue Feb 12 05:41:34 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
cpu AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+
2 gb of ram KVR667D2N5K2/2G 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 DIMM (Kit of 2) (installed in dimm1 and dimm2
hard disk sata western digital WDC WD3200JS-00P
ide DVD reader HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4522B

with that configuration works smooth (the only detail with that configuration is a message in the startup from bios about the cpuid )
My problem began when i try to add 2gb to the motherboard, i search a list of compatible memory and... i choose 2 of KVR667D2N5/1G 1GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 DIMM, and i try of put them in dimm2 and dimm3, results? some times can't boot my hard disk give errors, some times i can startup but when i start to launch programs i get disk errors, and just stop of respond, i need reboot.
1. i run memtest86 and don't report any error.
2. i take off the 2 gb KVR667D2N5/1G and all is fine again.
3. i put the original 2gb KVR667D2N5K2/2G but now in dimms3 and dimm4, and... seem works fine for a minutes, but same problem in some moment sda stop to respond and reboot again.
4. i remove the original memory and put 2gb KVR667D2N5/1G in dimm1 and dimm2, same results
5. i back to the original configuration, just 2gb KVR667D2N5K2/2G in dimm1 and dimm2 and i working without problems.
* note in every step i reset to the optimal values.
first i was thinking that my motherboard have sockets dimm3 and dimm4 damaged, but after of all that i don't know
any suggestion?

i am not an expert on your motherboard but to be honest first you must download the manual for your motherboard and go through it thoroughly and then look at the memory selection and type and make sure you have the right one in the right slot. you can also go to crucial memory and test your current memory with their software. although in the bios section i wonder if you have got your setting correct. if not sure just try enable those which are currently disabled and see the difference.sometimes you just have to try and error method as the manual is very basic and gives very little information. good luck

Problems with 1TB external HDD

I have two external HDD, one a LaCie 2TB and one a Maxtor Basics 1.5TB. Both devices come formatted as FAT32. I have tried reformatting using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended but the process fails on both devices, whichever of my iMac I use. The only thing I can then do is re-partition them as FAT32 again.
Equally frustrating, the devices are not visible when I try to access them from other machines on the network whereas other drives connected to the same machine are fully visible.
Is there a size limit for formatting using Mac OS Extended or something?
Any suggestions of how I might at least get them visible for sharing across the network - even if they have to stay as FAT32 drives?

Connect the External HD directly up to one of the iMac's and follow the Formatting and Partitioning instructions in Ken's article: (but note that doing so will erase the data on the drive)

Have tried several other USB mice and the only mouse that works is a PS/2. More importantly, the USB mouse in quesiton works on at least 4 other machines, all running WinXP Pro SP3.

Not sure what testing you are referring to. Perhaps you could send me the link to that thread. Have only tested different mice. Have compared the the HID, Mice and USB settings in the Device Mangers on a computer the mouses works on to the computer it doesn't work on and they are different. I will be happy to supply those to you if you like.

Problem with NEO 875P FISR2 BIOS v1.8

Hello,
I own a MSI NEO 8750 FISR2 mainboard and really like it
a lot. I just recently updated the BIOS to version 1.8
(which I obtained from MSI website). The updation went
on successfully. Windows seemed to be working fine. But
all of my 3D games became very slow. I tested the
performance under 3D Mark 2001 SE and the results had
been cut down by half! Here's the configuration of my PC:
Intel Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz
MSI Mainboard NEO 875P FISR2
512 MB DDR - 266 MHz (single dimm)
MSI Ti4800SE-VTD8X Graphics Card
Western Digital 80.0 GB UATA Hard Drive

I re-flashed the BIOS back to version 1.7 and everything
became fast again!
I don't know the reason for this but surely the update
doesn't suit me. Can you tell me what is it that I'm
doing wrong and whether I should stick to the old
version.

I installed the Intel INF update both from the supplied CD and from the website. It doesn't indentify the Intel SATA controller. When I install the Intel Aplication Accelerator RAID Edition, it halts at the start of the setup and exits by displaying a message. I can't recall the message exactly, but it was something like "Chipset not supported ..." I have tried to set the mode to both Legacy and Native but still no results.
Do I need to connect a hard drive to the Intel SATA controller in order to get it detected in Windows? And while I was going through the manuals, I saw a setup menu for Intel SATA controller (similar to Promise controller) before the PC boots to the OS. It doesn't appear in my PC. The Promise menu appears and I can use the Promise controller without problems. At first I thought that either the Intel or the Promise controller can work at one time. So, I disabled the Promise controller. It was no use. It just seems to appear that the Intel controller is simply absent !
Wondering if the samething has happened to anyone else?

Problem with Z77A-G43 After bios updating

I purchased my main a week ago, the bus of my rams are 1600 but main detect it 1333. So i updated my bios of 2.7 to 2.10 with live update 5, after the updating progress finished my pc restarted, it doest give any picture and after 20 sec reastart again and again!
I shorted the jumper, i brought out the battery but it didn't have any result. Please tell me a solution. And forgave me for my poor english. My pc:

Core i5 3570k
Sapphire 7790 dualX

RAM defaulting to DDR3 1333 is common as the SPD profile of the chips is set for that. For 1600, either manual setting is required or X.M.P. can be tried if the modules have X.M.P. profile.
Live Update bricked your board. Solution is to take the mainboard to a shop with an SPI flash programming device, or obtain RMA for an MSI Service Center, or contact your reseller for instruction.

K9N SLI-F V2 Versus K9N SLI V2

The box my MB came in says in big letters on the front: K9N SLI V2
The sticker with the bar codes says K9N SLI-F V2. What is the difference? Which do I have? How can I tell?
The first page in the manual that came with the board says MS 7930 (V1.X) Mainboard. Some are V2.X, again, what the difference?
The manual also says I have an am2 cpu socket.
I have Bios version 1.1
Does the Bios 1.1 version give my MB the ability to take full advantage of AM2+ cpu's?
Will all of the cpu's in the compatabilty list that have 7930v11.zip listed in the last column work in my MB? Will they have full (speed) functionallity?
I understand that I am limited to 95 watts, maximum. My current processor is a Athlon 64 X2 4200+, which I believe is 65 watts. Do you think I would need to upgrade my cooling fan if I get a 95 watt cpu?
I would like to upgrade to a substantially faster CPU. Does anybody have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Thanks to all for the replys. I've been reading a LOT about upgrading CPU's in this board. The more I read, the more confused I get. I have looked at MSI's CPU compatability list. I just want to verify that If I get a CPU that is on the list, and has 7930v11.zip in the last column, (my current bios rev is 1.1) then that CPU will work with full functionality and speed.
I read on wikipeodia that am2+ CPU's will work in am2 sockets, but with limited function, ergo, not the full speed the CPU is capable of. If I understood it correctly, wikipeodia goes on to say that am2 boards can be changed to am2+ capable by means of a bios change. Is that correct?
As I understand it this board originally had an am2 setup. Does the version 1.1 bios make it an am2+ setup? Or is it still an am2 setup?
My current CPU is an am2 Athlon 64, X2 4200+.
Will I be able to get a significantly faster CPU for this board? (I would rather not flash the bios unless I absolutely have to.)

P67a gd55 problem with a new gpu

Hi!
I just upgraded to an hd7970. Now I don't get any signal at all to my screen. Not even bios is loading. I've made sure everything is properly in place and connected on 8-pin and one 6-pin pci-express cable. When I plug in old gpu it works again. When I plug in the new card the fans start as usual at startup. I got a thermaltake tough power 750w psu. I've tried to rule it out to three things that can be wrong.
1. Gpu was dead on arrival.
2. My psu is too weak to fully drive the new gpu.
3. My motherboard won't recognize the new gpu.
I recently had problems with trying to flash bios with live update and had to flash back to version 1c.

Need help with bios for k9n sli v2(ms-7390)

I recently got a phenom 2 720 black edition CPU, and I flashed my bios with the beta bios for my board(7390v123).
Everything runs fine, except for now I can't change the CPU multiplier or CPU voltage(there locked on auto). Yes I do know about +/- and pgup/pgdn, the problem is it won't allow me to even select these options, it skips right over them to the next option. My motherboard is K9N SLI V2(Ms-7390). If anyone could help me out I'd be grateful thanks.

K9N SLI Platinum MS7250 ver1.1 ... need help with Windows 7 install

Having an intermittant issue with Windows 7 32bit. During startup Windows 7 gets stuck at the logo screen. Not always though. Every 7-8th reboot it will make it past and go all the way into Windows 7. I've tried all sorts of combinations of "ebabling/disabling". This system ran XP professional for 3 years without any issues. Currently, I have the most luck by connecting the keyboard and mouse to PS2 and leaving USB disabled. This may not be the issue though. Once I got Win7 to boot I performed driver updates etc.
If someone has suggestions please let me know. I'm about to try the USB bios flash but have never done it before.

- Yes it is a fresh install of Windows7 on a drive that originally had XP Pro
- If I boot into safe mode it does go into Win7 most of the time.
- I posted on the MSI tech support page (http://support.msi.com/index.php) and the response was to upgrade the BIOS. What do you think?
- I've been using this graphics card for three years and is nowhere near as powerful as what's out there now. In fact all of the components are three years old except the RAM
- I tried the old RAM (2GB Corsair) and it also had the same issue. Even at default RAM settings or otherwise. Now I'm back to the 4GB Patriot Vipers.
- What is this capacitor problem people are referring to? Is it a problem specifically on this model board?

When I run the install though nothing happens Nvidia splash then nothing and the files are not recognized by the device manager.
Any idea what the issue could be? sadly need the ethernet update so I can connect to the internet lol also the 2 discs have no effect neither work vista or the xp (tried vista since the x64 drives actually worked on it)

Vista x64 ultimate. I wanted to try X64 XP but I ran into problems thus the original post ^-^
Vista is nice I could live with it for Dx10 but man UAC sucks every attempt to disable = vista freak out and repair the file ^-^
ATM I use XP Home with the DX10 crack (I own vista so I don't see a issue) but yet to install any games on it. I will load up and check it out Still the fact I get medium with x8 aa is good imo. Game looks fantastic and with luck the FC2 engine won't be such a resource whore like crysis. I recall the Sandune (think thats the name) for FC1 even on low settings things still looked fantastic.
