K9N2 Diamond and Radeon HD 4890 Crossfire

Hey guys.  Just your general noob question here.  My mobo is a K9N2 Diamond SLI.  It has support for 3-way SLI and as far as I can tell, the Nvida based chipsets don't support Radeon XFire.  I was just wondering, though, does the board support the use of, say, a Radeon HD 4870x2 card?  I was hoping maybe it would since it's one card with 2 onboard GPUs, but just wanted to make sure it does.  I'm using an Nvidia GPU right now, but I've always like the ATIs better.

OK, this is back to what Bas said.  He informed me that Crossfire works on any board. I've installed two 4890s on my K9N2 Diamond and connected the appropriate power connectors and crossfire ribbons.  When my computer loads up, it sees both cards, but it does not recognize it as crossfire.  Neither does CCC.  Is it possible that the K9N2 won't run Crossfire setups (I mean, it is an SLI board and not AMD).

  • K9N2 Diamond and Sata ports 5&6

This is on a K9N2 Diamond MOBO
So I installed 2 SSD drives in my computer.  I also have a Blu-Ray drive and 2 HDDs.  I've installed the SSDs to SATA ports 1&2 and my HDDs to 3&4.  My Blu-Ray drive is on SATA port 5.  In this configuration the Blu-Ray drive doesn't show up.  If I swap it with one of the HDDs, My 2 SSDs, Blu-Ray and one HDD show up, but the second HDD does not.
How can I get all of the components to show, or are SATA ports 5&6 there just to say you have them?  Thank you in advance.

Think I read this FAQ before, but it was too long and complicated to my eyes:
The Southbridge of this motherboard (ICH6)could support 1 IDE channel and 4SATA interface. There are three items about SATA devices settings in BIOS Setup (Integrated peripherals->SATA Devices Configuration):
a.Combined: The mode is a traditional mode which contains 2 IDE channel combined by one IDE channel and 2 SATA interface, and could connect 4 devices. If you choose this item, you could get other two items: PATA IDE Mode & SATA IDE Mode, PATA IDE Mode is used to set IDE as primary/secondary channel, and the SATA as secondary/primary channel automatically. It’s mentioned that if you choose PATA as the primary channel, SATA3&SATA4 will be as secondary, if you set PATA as secondary channel, SATA1&SATA2 will be used as primary channel. If you choose combined mode, you’ll get 2 IDE channels in Standard CMOS Features:
    Primary IDE Master
    Primary IDE Slave
    Secondary IDE Master
    Secondary IDE Slave
b.Enhanced: Choose this mode, you could use 1 PATA and 4 SATA, which could connect 6 devices, and you’ll get 4 IDE channels in Standard CMOS Features:
    Primary IDE Master
    Primary IDE Slave
    Secondary IDE Master
    Secondary IDE Slave
    Third IDE Master
    Third IDE Slave
    Fourth IDE Master
    Fourth IDE Slave
Indeed we could just use 3 channels of them, (the secondary channel has canceled according to the Intel spec), the primary channel is the IDE channel, the third and the forth channel are bridged by SATA.
c.SATA: It’s the mode shield the IDE, and just use the 4 SATA. Choose this mode, in Standard CMOS Feature, you’ll get 2 IDE channels:
    Primary IDE Master
    Primary IDE Slave
    Secondary IDE Master
    Secondary IDE Slave

  • K9N2 Diamond and Xtreme Audio Card

The sound card that came with this board came with a driver/program CD. I've followed directions and ran the installation, but when I click on the Audio Console Launcher to configure it, I get a warning that, "The current selected audio device is not supported by the application. Do you want to select another audio device now?"
    If I click "NO"...thats it.
If I click "YES", I get another warning saying, "The Creative Audio Device Selection module cannot be launched. The module may be missing from your system. You may need to reinstall your application."
If I run the CD again, to reinstall the so-called module, I still run into the same problem.
The problem really is I can't use my headset w/mic for online gaming. Headset shows up in the Playback Devices but there is no "configure" option--greyed out.
What seems to be the malfunction?

  • MSI K9N2 Diamond and SSD OCZ Vertex 3

    Hello all,
I bought an OCZ SSD Drive Vertex 3 80GB and installed it on my system. I also have 2 WD Caviar Black HDDs /1TB/ running with NVIDIA Stripe, where my OS is, and 2 other hdds. After I installed the SSD drive and rebooted the system the nvidia raid controller froze. It displays the 'Detecting disk drives' or something like that meesage and freezes there. When I disconnect the SSD drive and reboot - it detects everything and boots normally again.
If I hot-plug is while running my OS, the SSD gets detected and works fine. But this doesn't work for me, because eveytime I reboot the PC, I must disconnect the drive... more, I wanted to install my OS there and if it doesn't get detected at reboot... it wont work. Any ideas?

Never mind that, I changed the RAID mode to IDE (it was SATA, didn't work, AHCI didn't work either). But now it's ok!

Hi,  were can I find info about  the Memory timings thats possible to configure  in the  BIOS CELL  menu ?
The memory installed is the CORSAIR Dominator PC8500C5D   mem sticks.
the four familiar timings, CAS tRCD tRP and tRAS  is O.K. ofcourse since they are printed on the memory stick one buy's .
     But the other timings:
    tRTP
    tRC
    tWR
    tRRD
    tWTR
    tRFC0
    tRFC1
    tRFC2
    tRFC3
Is there a document somewhere to read  about these ?
also  has  anyone used  the  "SLI-READY Memory"  option with any succes ?

  • K9N2 Diamond and Memory voltage ?

The default voltage on my  DIMMS  seems to be  1.9 volts.
This from info from the MSI  overclocking utlity.
Presently the machine is stable  at 800 Mhz  Dimm Clock.
But it is unstable  at 1066 Mhz Dimm Clock.
Corsair , the memory vendor,   says  that  the  TwinX4096-8500CD  DIMMS
needs 2.1 Volts   to run at  1066 Mhz .
The BIOS entries in the CELL  menu for Voltages  is Grayed out.
Is there any arcane  knowledge   needed  to  get at the Voltage setting.

     Thanks,
Well it seems to much better at 1066 Mhz with 2.1 volts on the dimms.  ,  used to crash  within minutes,  but does'nt do that now.

  • MSI K9N2 Diamond CPU FAN SPEED

It is not much of a problem, but, recently I changed my msi k9n platinum with k9n2 diamond and, of course, I transfered the old hardware to the new mainboard.
My CPU is x2 64 athlon 6000+ and my fan is Cooler Master Susurro (http://www.overclockersonline.net/?page=articles&num=354). On my platinum board my fan
acted quietly, around 1000-1100 rpms and the cpu temp. around 42-44 degrees celsius. As I changed the mainboard the cpu temp. fell on 34-36 BUT the cpu fan
is now cooling faster, around 1400-1600 rpms. I don't mind my cpu 8 degrees hotter and a better sleep at night :D. I've tried latest drivers, cool&quiet drivers, bios
cool&quiet, smart fan target.. nothing helps. It is the same. I run windows XP SP2. Updated to the last released bios. Tied speedfan, but it doesn't support that
mainboard. And my fan is now too loud, can someone help me

When changing motherboard you need to do at least a repair installation of Windows. Can't really be avoided.
That would mean you reinstall motherboard drivers. Maybe things work better this time.
You set Cooln'quiet to minimal savings, if I'm not mistaken.
Your Susurro got a few years. Are you sure it is up to the job? The test you link to was with a Socket 939 processor, at about half to 2/3 the power and heat output to the one you got.
Oh, and please mention your PSU, too.

I just put my system together and can't get it to boot. I've found out that it could be a bios problem , is there any way to tell what bios version it is without getting to the boot screen. Also is there anyway to change the bios with no boot screen.

    = Processor Initialization
You have pretty much three options right now:
    1) Install a processor officially supported by BIOS Version 2.3 to start the system and then update your BIOS.
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Alternatively, you can try this (at your own risk, of course, and there is no guarantee that it will work):
    - Download the latest BIOS Archive: http://download1.msi.com/files/downloads/bos_exe/7375v24.zip
    - Unpack the BIOS File (A7375NMS.240) and rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM
    - Copy the AMIBOOT.ROM file to an empty floppy disk
    - hook up a floppy disk drive to your K9N2 Diamond and insert the floppy disk with AMIBOOT.ROM on it
    - hook up a PS/2 Keyboard and disconnect all hard drives, optical drives and USB Devices (and use one memory stick only)
    - Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU
    - Start-up the system and press CTRL + Home on your PS/2 Keyboard multiple times after start-up
    - If you are lucky, the key command will trigger the AMI BIOS Recovery Routine which will attempt to read and program the AMIBOOT.ROM File on the floppy disk.
If option number 3) does not work for you, go back to 1) or 2).

  • MSI K9N2 Diamond w/ AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE Overheating

    Motherboard Version = 1.1
BIOS = ? (Just purchased, but have an RMA on the processor for the issue listed below, so I'm not sure of the version)
I purchased the MSI K9N2 Diamond and an AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE. According to the CPU support page, this processor does work with the board. Also, MSI Tech Support said:
    Quote
Yes, this board could support Phenom II X4 955.

We have verified this CPU for this board on our lab with no problem
As far as I can tell, the processor works with the board because it does boot and recognizes it. However, it overheats extremely fast. The processor temps exceed 62C (Max Recommended CPU Temp) in under 30 seconds. I reseated the cooler several times with various thermal pastes so I'm sure that is not the issue. I was wondering if anyone knew of an existing problem between this processor or board, or if it was probably just a defective core.

Try your setup outside of pc case on a piece of non-conducting material to see if temp will drop.
I'll try this tomorrow when the new CPU arrives if the issue persists.
Quote from: Hans on 03-July-09, 01:42:40
Just to be 100% sure -- do check that the fan is placed correctly onto the heatsink. the air should be blown into the heatsink, not be sucked through. (Hollow side of the fans down).
Fan is indeed situated to suck air through the cooler.
Quote from: Hans on 03-July-09, 01:42:40
    Check the heatsink is clean.
Yeah it was pristine, brand new.
Quote from: Hans on 03-July-09, 01:42:40
And then this: does the heatsink feel hot when the system overheats? Or warm to the touch?
Yes, it was very warm to the touch. Almost too hot to want to keep my finger there, actually did cause a layer of flesh to disappear from repeatedly testing it in this manner >.< (to see if the heatsink was warm each time, that is).

  • K9n2 diamond Ram timings help.

So I've got a k9n2 diamond, and GeIL Green Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500). The problem that I'm having is that after 2 weeks of owning the ram i realized it was running at 800mhz and not its advertised 1066mhz. So I went into the bios and set it to 1066, and upon the next boot it told me i had bad ram settings and I needed to go back and fix them. I assume its not working because I didn't set the recommended manufacturer timing which is 6-6-6-18. And I believe the ram is 2t because the system wont post at all if set to 1t. So my question is: How do I set the timings I assume in advance dram settings? although there are a lot of options in there which i don't understand. Oh and I'm also running the latest bios 2.61
    Link to the ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144347
    Any help would be appreciated.

Actually I notice the difference in Battlefield bad company 2. You see I went from these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220334   (Patriot Viper 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)) if you don't trust the link. I switched because I kinda destroyed 3/4 other sticks of the Patriot memory I had taking off the heat spreaders...
Edit: So you're saying that I can get it to 1066 through adjusting the timings right? If so how?

  • K9N2 Diamond & Gigabyte 8800 GT SLI

Hi. I recently had a K9N Diamond with 2 Gigabyte 8800 GT (GV-NX88T512HP TypeB) in SLi, worked perfectly. One fo them fried and sent it to rma. In this time, changed motherboard (to K9N2 Diamond) and PSU (NOX Urano 600w to Corsair TX750). Worked all ok, but with only one Gigabyte VGA. Gigabyte rma gave me an identical card, but Type A. Tried SLI with the other one and it didn't worked. Both cards in solo work fine. Together, the monitor power led flashes but no image, I even hear the music of windows starting, but no image. Can you help.

Sorry this is a Gigabyte problem not MSI.

I read the manual, and it says that i need to connect the two 3way SLI connectors for a dual sli config. Rather confusing. It also refers to "SLI Drivers" ?. Never heard of it. Please help!!

No. But i achieved sli yesterday. I disabled the onboard graphics card (this board has Hybrid SLI) on the driver settings. The sli is running but only when windows starts. I can't see post, so i can't enter bios.

  • PowerMac G5 and Diamond ATI Radeon HD 2600PRO not working?

Recently bought and restored a 1.8GHz DP PCI-X PowerMac G5 off Craigslist. In the process of restoration, I decided to upgrade the original 64mb AGP card to a Diamond ATI Radeon HD 2600PRO 256MB AGP card. While ordering said card, I did not realize it required a power supply cord; fortunately, after I dug through the myriad of adapters I had, I found a SATA power to 2 molex power Y-splitter, as well as a 2 molex power to 1 graphics power Y-splitter. I plugged these into each other and ran the contraption from the 2nd HDD power supply to the card. After booting, I realized neither of the 2 monitors connected to the card were displaying video; in fact, they were in "standby" mode. The computer sounds and looks fine in terms of lights and beeps; the fan on the graphics card spins up and works fine; the keyboard and mouse light up for a second or two a few seconds after the bootup chime, and then go unresponsive. After a few minutes of staying on, the fans on the computer clearly and audibly spin faster and faster until the computer sounds like a jet engine. I attempted to allow this process to run for almost an hour the other day after reading on a forum that it's a memory test or something, but the computer was still unresponsive with no video. I've tried every kind of PRAM, SMC, etc. power reset. I replaced the onboard battery twice with brand new ones of different brands. The computer worked fine with the other card but it just doesn't want to with this one, so it seems. What are my options?

    Hi David,
    Isn't that only a Windows® card?

  • K9N2 DIAMOND - Wrong DRIVER VERSION on CD and WEBSITE????

The driver version found in CD and in MSI website for K9N2 Diamond are correct?
That MOBO in 780a SLI and, as far as I know,  the correct driver version is the 15.26 found in nVidia driver site.
MSI provide 18.11 in CD and in WEB site as well but those are referred to a different chipset, isn’t it?
    Thank you!

That's the question ..... using the CD driver (18.11) I had a lot of problems (lack of performance and stability), now after the 15.26 installation everything seems working fine....

  • K9N2 Diamond dual SLI--will PCI_E1 and PCI_E4 still work?

I've got a K9N2 Diamond mobo. Two things: If I SLI two MSI N280GTXs in PCI_E2 and PCI_E3, will the remaining two PCIe slots still work? If so, do you think there will be room to leave my SCSI card in PCI_E1? The reason I ask about PCI_E4 is that the manual says, "If you intend to install two expansion cards...these three PCIe x16 lanes will configure to x16/ x16/ x0." That looks to me like the third one will be dead. Thanks.
P.S.--Sorry if I seemed a little harsh last time I was in here. I was trying to be funny and seem annoyed at the same time. And no fair changing your sig so it looks like I was calling you a moron for no reason. I gave up on running RAID and booting SCSI.
    P.P.S.--I don't use smileys.

Hybrid SLI, read the mainboard manual if need to apply properly BIOS options.
