K9N2 Platinum Sli and onboard

quick question , don't know if this will work , could i hook up a second monitor to the onboard vga , so i can have sli and dual monitors? I have read that you can run both if you add the third vid , but would i be able to do it with the onboard as the 3rd?

ok no one wants to have fun with this one?
so far , 180.48 drivers support dual mon and sli , yet for some unknown reason , i can't get both 2 work after a reboot. I can get a 22 lcd and a 19 lcd both on dvi (digital) to work in sli after changing and detecting and screwing around for about 30 minutes , and it works great BUT soon as i reboot , the second monitor goes away and thats the end of it . i have tried it with just the 2 9800gt's and also with the 9800gt's and the igpu .kinda screwey but hey , light fun for a saturday. no crashes or anything and gives me something to do while i fix the neighbor's pc. now i can get dual and sli to work , after reboot , if and only if , my second monitor uses the dvi-vga adapter and then it works fine. strange i say . works for me , cause the plan for the 2nd one is to just shpw temps and other monitoring apps while i game , plus the random page or 2 off the net. doesnt need to show pure digital bliss to do its job . I just find all of this rather odd , but hey , its nvidia for yah......
any thoughts?

  • Msi K9N2 Platinum SLI and Windows Server 2003 r2 32 bit edition

Does anyone know or have tried to get this board to work on server 2003 32 bit edition. I seem to get past the raid part but the realtek 8211bl and audio are giving me fits. Any links to good drivers would be appreciated.
    Spec of system:
    Amd 9950 Quad
    4 gig memory
    Msi K9N2 Platinum SLI
    2 500 gig sata

Ok overall solution this board works awesome with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 with Sp 2.
Here are a few tricks for the Co processor controller, Sm Bus, Audio and finally the networking controller.
When you finally get windows loaded. Make sure you put Service Pack 2 or 3 on before u install drivers.
The raid drivers are simple for the 32 bit version use the xp ones and load both raid drivers during setup. Requires 2 floppys or Slipstream disk.
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=7067&i=2
Once you get windows loaded and Sp 2 or better on. Stick in your windows vista driver disk in. Once there do not install anything.
Goto device manager and update drivers on all that are with the yellow ? excpet the networking drivers and just do an automatic search and boom your done. It will also ask you if you want to enable your audio at this time. Do so but do not reboot untill u finish installing all drivers but networking. Than reboot pc
Last part is for networking card. We need you to be in safe mode for this. So once u install all drivers and start reboot hit F8 and goto safe mode. Once in safe mode take out vista driver disk and put in xp driver disk. Goto device manager and update driver on network controller and let it do an automatic search and it will installl it. It will say it needs to be rebooted to work. Go ahead and reboot and your networking card will work.
Probably simpliar solution. But just wanted to give my help.

  • Difference between K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and K8N-SLI Platinum

Hey guys.... I have one question and i hope you can help me.
I'm about to get an MSI SLI Platinum motherboard, but it seems that there are two versions, the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and the K8N-SLI Platinum.
What is the real difference between them? As i can see in the manual, the Neo4 version has the additional SATA2 and Gbit LAN controller.
Anyone: Does your K8N-SLI board have 4 or 6 SATA2 ports? and 1 or 2 LANs?
At this picture  http://www.midtdata.dk/asp/index.asp?varernr=K8N-SLI-PLAT&goto=productinfo&mainfunc=link I can see that there are 6 blue SATA connectors (lower right corner), and 2 LAN ports left to the LPT port... But the description says 4 SATA and 1 LAN, and so says the manual.
To all owners of this mobo:  Does this picture look like your K8N-SLI Platinum or does it look like your K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI ?

    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?board=36.0
d/l a raid manual and all should be clear

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI and BIOS goofiness

A couple nights ago I figured I'd flash my K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI to the latest BIOS version, since I hadn't touched it in over a year. I was using 3.1, and I decided to use the 3.A. Big mistake. Computer boots fine, but immediately bluescreens as soon as Windows tries to load. After diddling around on my brother's computer trying to make a bootable CD, I manage to get back to a state where I can flash again, and try the 3.7. Same problem...bluescreen on Windows startup. At that point I just gave up and went back to 3.1, ignoring the 3.3 and 3.2 BIOSes.
Is anyone else having issues trying to flash the more recent BIOSes?
(I just recently found out that MSI's US site doesn't have a complete list of available BIOSes, while the Taiwanese site does. I might have to give 3.9 and 3.8 a try.)
EDIT: My system specs are in the link in my sig.

Ok, quick update. I just spent about half an hour with 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, and 3.A. None of them work except 3.1...they all bluescreen while starting Windows. I made sure to clear the CMOS completely, yes I left APIC/MPS settings the same (they've always been on default so that hasn't been an issue), and I tried the various safe modes.
    Here's the error code given on the BSOD: 0x0000007B (0xF78A6528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
A quick search on the 0x0000007B error code gives a fairly lengthy MS KB article, but no real solution. I'm at a loss as to why 3.1 works great but nothing else does.

  • P7N platinum sli and qx9650 overclock issues

    Hey all,
Just wondering if someone could help me with overclocking my qx9650 on my P7N platinum sli.
I have tried throwing all kinds of voltages at the cpu, fsb, and nb and I still can't run stable for over a few seconds. I thought it might be due to a fsb hole and have tried a range from 1550-1650. My goal is to get it at 400mhz(1600 in bios) and get a 5:4 ratio with my ram at 1000.  I tried updating to the p06 performance bios from ami 1.3 and still can't get it stable. I don't want to end up frying my board. I got it to run stable at 350 for an hour in prime 95 but would really like to achieve 1600.  at 350x8.5 for 1500 my temps did not get above 54c under full load
I am not looking for a huge oc, just get to 9x400 for a 3.6 ghz clock speed for 24/7 use. I ran prime 95 for 5 hours with everything at stock so I know it is not a bad cpu, ram, mobo. I also ran memtest86+ at stock and every test passed. I have d.o.t disabled, eist disabled, and spread spectrum disabled.
Memory timings right now are 5-5-5-18-2T at 2.1v and memtest+ passed with those settings at speed 800mhz.
    any suggestions would be great

just wanted to let everyone know that i got it stable at 3.75ghz for 26 hours in prime 95. Don't know why but it still won't boot from 1550-1650 (must be a FSB hole or something) so i just put it at 1500(375) with a 10 multiplier and ram at 1000 for a 3:4 fsb:ram ratio.

  • Troubleshooting K9N2 Platinum SLI Board

I received my Newegg.com package today including:
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail
MOBO: MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
    CPU: AMD Phenom 9850 BLACK EDITION 2.5GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HD985ZXAGHBOX - Retail
    RAM(8GB total, 4x2GB chips): G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Retail
VIDEO: HIS Hightech H487F1GP Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail
This is all going into a tall tower case with 5 SATA HDD + 1 SATA DVD/RW drive.
I kept the initial hookup basic assuming there would be problems.  Motherboard, Power Supply, using Onboard Video (Radeon not installed yet), and only 1 RAM chip in DIMM 1 socket.
Turns on, fans spin, and the 4 status LEDs were red.  Shutdown, reseated memory, checked connections, restart and booted Windows Vista 64 Ultimate (was already loaded on the drive).  I loaded all the new motherboard drivers.
    Reboot.  Hangs during Post.  Reboot.
Starts Windows & then shuts down for no apparent cause - as if someone pulled the cord, not a graceful shutdown.
Reboot, load optimized BIOS settings.  noticed board is on v3.1.  Decide not to flash to v3.2 yet.
Run Windows Vista Memory check - FINE.  Try the other 3 sticks individually to be sure - Test "stopped" & shutdown machine (not gracefully).
Put back in the 1st "good" memory stick.  Windows starts again.  Load up the nVidia Control Panel & use the performance tool to test CPU/Memory/etc.  No issues for an hour.
Add 2nd memory stick in:  No issues for an hour.
I am about to add in the next memory stick.  I thought CPU overheating was the problem at first but apparently not since it runs fine for an hour under heavy load without any issue.  Now I am thinking either a memory chip is bad or possibly one of the DIMM slots itself.
    Any other thoughts?

Good - My CPU Temperature has never exceeded 49C.
Here is what I know so far:
2, 2GB RAM chips (4GB total) ran through MemTest with no problem.  I also used the nVidia Stability Test suite to hammer the CPU & Memory for hours yesterday and this morning.  In this configuration, I was using the onboard video too to rule out PCI-E video card.
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate (all latest patches applied)
Motherboard Bios:  v3.1 (there is a newer v3.2 but haven't applied it)
The problems left at this point are:
        1. Need to test the last 2 RAM chips to confirm if they are a problem.
        2. The system "shuts off" now after about 5 minutes with the new HIS branded ATI RADEON HD 4870 card.  This occurred with my older nVidia GeForce 7800GTX too.  Remember, using the integrated DVI adapter I've been working all morning without any sudden shut offs.
        3. If I tell Windows to reboot, it will shutdown gracefully, momentarily shut off the motherboard, and reset.  Restarts just fine.  However, if I shutdown & cold boot, I usually have to shut the system off 2-3 times before it will finally POST & boot the operating system correctly.
If anyone has thoughts about #2 or #3 - let me know.

  • K8N SLI and onboard PCIE_PW1 connection

Does anyone know if I need to connect the power to the onboard "PCIE_PW1" if i have already connected power directly to my 6800gs card?  The power connection from my psu to the 6800gs card is specifically for a pci express graphics card so im presuming its getting enough power..... The power supply is a hiper 580 Type R

    • All power connectors, ATX1 (24 Pin) & JPW1 (4 Pin, for CPU Power) & PCIE_PW1 (4 pin, for PCI-E VGA) must be attached to this model to ensure operation of the Mainboard. • A Power Supply of 450 watts, or above, is highly recommended for system stability.
    • ATX 12V power connection should be 20A or greater.

so it looks to me that you just have to plug the one on the mobo and not the one on your graphic card.

  • Strange findings with K8N DIamond/Platinum SLI and BIOS 3.6

Having toiled for weeks trying to get my machine to run at 1T timings fully stable at memory speed 550DDR, I have finally done it.
What you have to do is this...make sure that your NB voltage is the same or greater than your CPU Voltage.
I had my CPU at 1.45+6.6% =1.546v and my NB at 1.5v. This would not work.
I found out by accidentally putting 1.6v through the NB and Voila!
Not only that but the RAM is now doing great at 285MHz (570DDR with 2.5-4-4-8 1T at 2.80v).
All been stable through all benchmarks and SuperPi/Memtest for 2 days in total now.
    Updating my profile to match.
    My God it feels good.
I hope that this helps some folk who have stability problems in any area.
    K6dude

I have not tried the 3.7 BIOS, as it is all working well. I don't want to inherit any new bugs...I'll wait until someone tests it all properly.
I wish that the 183 mem divider would be put back, I'm having to adjust it from 166 to 183 with A64Tweaker on startup.
Anyone know if 3.7/1.7 has the 183 divider?
Yes I was only successful current CPU speed with BIOS 3.2, 3.5 and 3.6, so try 3.6 and maybe 3.7 with my settings...you might be lucky.
After you have flashed your BIOS, reset the CMOS button TWICE...and make sure that the PSU has no power going into it and you have no seperately powered USB devices attached while you reset it (This has found to be the case for me with my USB Keyboard/mouse devices), otherwise it will not reset properly and some of your old bugs could still be there.
What week Venice CPU do you have...0517 is mine and it is so far one of the best batches...this could make a difference in some cases.

  • K8n Neo4 platinum sli and RAM placement

Hi all,Im a bit of a spazz when it comes to upgrading so was hoping you guys could help.
I have just purchased two 1 gig ram sticks to add to my 1 gig in the machine,Ram sticks are as follows:
    1 gig pc3200 ddr400(double sided)
    1 gig pc3200 ddr400(double sided)
    512mb pc3200 ddr400(double sided)
    512mb pc3200 ddr400(single sided)
Now ive noticed there is different colours on the slots so was wondering if the ram listed above should be put onto the motherboard in a certain order, and after installing it do i need to change any settings on teh pc or bios.
Thanks to anyone who can advice me on this issue.

should be fine to put straight in
    the manual says
"Always insert the memory modules into the GREEN slots first, and
it is strongly recommended not to insert the memory modules into
the PURPLE slots while the GREEN slots are left empty."
also you do know that your ram will run at ddr333 rather than ddr400 - this is due to using all four slots on the mainboard

  • Neo4 Platinum SLI and win98se

Hey all,  I was wondering if anyone has used this combination.  Cursory searches show that win98se doesn't support pci-express, however, I'm wondering if I can use a pci video card to get this up and running.  I've invested a lot of equipment and software for my Digital Audio Workstation that only works in win98se.  I was interested in dual booting with win2k/xp. Thanks for the input.

well, I tried to install win98se and there were portions of the install that went very fast.  However, upon reboot the little animated bars at the bottom of the screen when win98se is loading was very slow and would take around 5-10 minutes to completely load windows.  I tried disabling many things in the bios but nothing seemed to make the boot time quicker.   In the end win98se is installed but i'm sure because there are no real drivers for the chipset my attempts at having my digital audio software work are probably a waste of time.  Thanks for lookin....

    Hello all,
a friend of mine is thinking about buying this board with a new X2 cpu, but the question is if the mb is going to boot with this cpu without being flased at first with the right bios version which supports this cpu... might be it work although being detected as a lower one?
Thx very much for the answer.

If you can, verify the board revision number, and or the BIOS version.

  • K8N Platinum SLI

Their is a review over at Xbitlabs on the Diamond board. Xbitlabs - Diamond Review
It states that the K8N Platinum SLI board is actually using the nForce4 Ultra chipset?? and not the nForce4 SLI chipset?
MSI’s product range also includes an analogous mainboard called K8N SLI Platinum which is a little bit less expensive than the K8N Diamond, is based on the nForce4 Ultra and, accordingly, doesn’t support the SLI mode. So, one of the PCI Express x16 slots of the K8N SLI Platinum works as PCI Express x2 on the logical level. Otherwise the two mainboard models are identical.
Yet the specs on MSI's web site definatly state it is using the nForce4 SLI chipset.
    K8N Platinum SLI
Can someone from MSI clear this up, is it the SLI or Ultra chipset and is it capable of 8x/8x and not 16x/2x as Xbitlabs have stated.

XBit got it wrong.  MSI Taiwan first listed these boards, (three of them) named K8N SLI Platinum, K8N Diamond, and K8N Neo 4 Platinum.  Both the SLI Platinum and the K8N Diamond use the NF4 SLI chip.
The confussion begins when MSI USA renames the K8N SLI Platinum to K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI.  These are the same boards.  Both the K8N Diamond & K8N SLI Platinum//NEO 4 Platinum SLI use the same  NF4 SLI chip.  Only the K8N Neo 4 Platinum uses the Ultra chip.
I've looked at the Diamond specs and the actuall board the US has, (K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI) and they are identical.  Same amount of sata ports, same amount of onboard lan ports.   The only difference between these two boards was A)where they are being marketed, & B)The Diamond was to include the BT & WiFi, plus the piece of plastic for the Diamond Club.
These are actual .jpg's of the actual boards.

The Ultra listing is also wrong in both countries, it is actually shipping with two onboard lan connections, four nv sata connectors, four silicon image sata connectors.  Link to Ultra Pic

  • MSI K9N2 Platinum Power Supply Recommendations

Hi, I am looking for a new power supply as my original burned out.  Come to find out that since I upgraded my 2gb Corsair RAM to 4gb, it was not enough to supply power to it.  *silly me*
    My specs:
    MSI K9N2 Platinum SLI
    AMD64 X2 4000+ 2.81Ghz OC'D
320 GB Seagate SATA ( I plan to purchase and install a new hard drive soon. Probably a 1TB Western Digital drive so will be running 2 Hard drives)
    4 GB Corsair DDR2 DHX (Orginally 2GB Corsair DDR2)
    EVGA 8800 GT 512MB DDR3
    DVD-R/W
My original power supply was a 450 Watts PSU.  Now that its burned out, I will need a new one to replace it.  I use my computer mainly for gaming, web browsing, etc.
I aim to look at the Corsair PSU brand because it is a very good PSU.  Can anyone suggest the amount of watts that I will need?
    Thanks in advance.

With the 8800GT, you should have a PSU that's capable of 26A, or 30A if you have many HDD and ODD and PCI cards. The Corsair VX450(33A) would work, but the VX550(41A) would be better(the TX 650 even better). If you're in the USA, NewEgg has the PC P&C after MIR, mail-in-rebates, competitively priced with the Corsairs.
Now, as long as the failed PSU didn't take out any components, the new PSU should serve you well.

  • Fan noise MSI Platinum SLI

    Hi everyone!
I'm determined to buy a MSI Platinum SLI, but I read the fan noise is too loud. I know basing your purchase in the fan noise is a bit silly, but I want a quiet PC (at least reasonably quiet), and I've heard that you lose your waranty if you change any of the components of the motherboard, including the fan, and that doesn't appeal to me.
    Opinions?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi fafner,
As a matter of fact it as 2, one on the southbridge an one on the power regulators, but are of 30 mm not that much noise
    Be well....
I thought only the K8N Diamond SLI has the fan on the power regulators.  I have the USA "non diamond club" version of the K8N Diamond, the K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI, and it only has a fan on the Northbridge, the power regulators/MOSFET's have a passive heatsink.
Regardless, IMO the Northbridge fan on my board isn't loud at all, I didn't worry about silence when I built, but my case fans are all medium RPM 120mm fans and my CPU watercooled, so if it was obnoxious I'd notice it.  It isn't.
