K9N2 SLI platinum - another problem w/ Phenom II

I decided to upgrade my K9N2 SLI Platinum from Phenom 9850BE to Phenom II 940 3.0GHz.  I switched the CPUs but I didn't update the bios from 3.2 to 3.3.  When I powered up the bios 3.2 system with the Phenom II it posted and booted but then blue screened.  I restarted and went into the bios settings and checked the hardware monitor and it showed the CPU temperature at 80C!  I looked at the voltage and this bios was giving the Phenom II 1.8 volts.  I immediately shut down and felt the CPU sink and it was quite warm after only 60 seconds or so.  That wasn't a stock heatsink either - it was a CNPS9700 with AS5 - a lot of copper to heat up.
It seems that the 3.2 bios, if it didn't recognize the CPU, should not have set the VCORE to the maximum of 1.8 volts and continue to run.
Also, I replaced the Phenom II with a sempron to upgrade the bios and had a problem after successfully flashing 3.3.  I spent the weekend back and forth with MSI support and they sent a beta bios 3.3.3 that did work.  My problem with 3.3 was that the machine would freeze before POST with the Group 2 LED flashing green/red.
I'm waiting for a new CPU and wondering if I should also RMA the motherboard.  How come so many people seem to have flashed 3.3 with no problem but mine didn't work?

Thanks for all the information.  As I said, I have the MB working on a spare Sempron and I am waiting for a new 940, but here are some facts I'm still curious about:
1. With a plain vanilla Sempron 3400+ and a plain vanilla one stick of slow memory my K9N2 SLI Platinum will not boot correctly with bios 3.3, even after resetting cmos, unplugging, etc.   MSI tech had to send me 3.3B3.  Anyone know why that would be.   Is there something wrong or different about my MB compared with everyone else that has 3.3?  What bug in 3.3 is fixed with 3.3B3?
The sempron should boot correctly. (3.3Beta3 is a pre-3.30)
Quote
2. I'm sorry but I think that with 3.2 or 3.3 or 3.3B3, before flashing, after flashing, with cmos reset, with cmos not reset, the bios should never put the red maximum 1.8 volts on a CPU it doesn't recognize.  I never set that parameter. It is a bios bug for it to switch up to 1.8 Vcore.  I had the 9850BE at Auto (about 1.1V I think).
You need 3.30 and after reset the cmos.
Quote
3. "I doubt it burned the CPU"  Really? The max case temp for 940 is 60C.  Mine got to 80C.  That's not good, even if it does still work.  Fortunately I purchased from NE who will RMA it.
I doubt yours even got 80C as you where using the wrong BIOS...did you measure it with a digital temp-meter?
Did you burn your fingers on the heatsink?
It's not the first time a CPU temp is being read wrong in the BIOS.

4. digit123abc said "i have the same board and 940BE, 3.3 sets the cpu voltage to 1.8volts even after bios reset and loading defaults"  So, when I get the new 940, with 3.3B3 am I really going to have to rush into the bios and change the 1.8Volts to auto before I burn that CPU also?  If so, that's a bad bios bug.
A BIOS default is Vcore at Auto, never seen anything else....not a BIOS-bug but he didn't reset the cmos after flashing.
And again 3.3Beta3 is older then 3.30 that is release version.
Same as with Windows7 Beta....thats prior to Windows7 Release.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum memory problems

I just built my first computer with the K9N2 SLI Platinum.  The computer will not boot up with my ozr memory (2x2GB) SLI-Ready Edition DDR2 PC2-6400 4 GB Dual Channel.  Here is the link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XFI1EE .  I can get it to boot with my old kingston ram (2x512MB).  Once and a while it will start up with one stick of the 2GB with the Kingston but not all 4 at once.  When I do get it to start up I eventually get the blue screen of death.  The screen never stays on for long to write stuff down.  This is my first build and I used my old hard drive with the same windows on it.  It is vista home premium 32-bit.  Would changing all the hardware mess up the software on the hard drive?  Let me know what you all think.  Thanks!

Could be the seating of the processor. Think it would be good to take the motherboard out and reseat the processor. Clean off old before applying new thermal grease.
If you want to learn what the BSOD says, normally they a r e  a Windows/software problem,  disable Windows' automatic restart. Right-click This computer and choose Properties. Click Advanced, and un-tic the 'Restart automatically'.
Could it be a cpu problem?  I do notice when i have both of my 2x2GB rams in i get four red LED lights which my manuel does not say anything about.  I have read on other forums that this could be the cpu is not seated right.  Is there any software that will tell me if the cpu is not installed correctly?

  • MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum overclock problem

I'm using a K9N2 SLI motherboard, but I'm not very good at manual overclock so I choose D.O.T option, it like some ranking system, but I choose any of them and start to playing game it cause my PC
    lockup
It very unstable.  Any idea for overclock my CPU?

Um, Yes, The Regulator failing is true, since Voltages are constantly being changed... D.O.T. is not a very cool way to overclock, since D.O.T. will constantly change the whole FSB, meaning that not only the FSB will go up, but memory as well. Most memory modules don't accept this "Constant Frequency Change", especially while it's powered on, the "Performance Level" Latency will not allow this. Manual overclock are the best, it will cause less lockups. D.O.T. will not cause trouble on all Ram modules, but in almost 90% cases it will! And please do remember that nVIDIA Chipsets doesn't overclock well, you are better off running the system at stock than overclocking nVIDIA chipsets. I'ts because nVIDIA uses BSEL pins, on the chipset itself, meaning it can only lock to a specific frequency like 667 / 800 / 1066 / 1333, etc. You're going to struggle with this one, unfortunately, but you can try lowering your RAM's latencies. Remember that when upping RAM Frequency, requires you to lower the latency. D.O.T. Will detect the "Power" command & will overclock, as said, all Frequencies goes up, including the RAM... So, you might have luck, but anything upt to 20% overclock doesn't require you to adjuct any chipset voltages, only RAM, depending on how your latencies vs. Frequency are set. The processor should still beable to reach ajn overclock, without a nice cooler. I overclocked my Q6600 on my P35 Platinum to 3600Mhz, FSB 1800, with a stock Intel Cooler (I didn't use it like this for 24/7 use). Test the OC first, before buying a new cooler, you only need the cooler once you know the CPU is able to OC up to where you want it, otherwise, the cooler won't make it Overclock more, it'll only decrease the risk of blowing the CPU due to Overheat. Intel Processors don't Blow when they overheat, they have an Internal SCR which switches off the current before the CPU reaches a specific temperature (which is pre-determined by Intel). I think the newer generation AMD's also have it, I'm not sure. You can always try Lowering the latencies of your RAM & boost the voltage of it a little bit. Then don't use D.O.T. & OC manually, not from Windows.

I have a K9N2 SLI Platinum and have a Phenom 940 on the way. Are there still issues with bios 3.4? what is the proper way to flash to 3.4 so the volatge is normal ? I just flashed via the usb meathod but dont i have to reset and clear cmos? also what is the stock proper voltage for the phenom 940? is it 1.375 or 1.350?

have you tried uping the voltage, the black dragon works perfect at 1066 from 2.2v to 2.4v, however the gskill requires 2.3v to work perfect at 1066 (so my setup its 2x1gb geil and 2x1gb gskill (total 4gb) voltage set to 2.3v) if i dont set 2.3v i get completely random restarts (could be after afew hours or afew days), all passed with prime and occt.
just in case, after bios reset ddr is set to 800 as default ,go into bios and set divider to 1066, then set timings to 5-5-5-15 (dont use auto/sli ready) bios sets strange timings by default at 1066 then set voltage and save.
I've tried everything and even chatted with MSI Techs over it all, been back and forth between MSI and OCZ for about a month now.. bottom line, MSI told me was that they don't certify or support OCZ ddr1066 on the K9N2 SLI Plat; which OCZ Techs told me, basically. B.S!  ...claiming they tested the Board themselves when it came out.   However OCZ doesn't even have the Board listed on their RAM Configurator on their website; which they claim is MSI's fault... and so on, and so on...
Anyway, OCZ is offering to swap my Reaper Set for a different Model set which they claim is more reliable on AMD processors.  Probably their Gold or SLI model set I'd guess; they don't even advertise on their website any difference in their sticks being "Intel Certified" or "AMD Certified" ... and so on.
Worse case scenario; if in the end whatever they give me still doesn't work, I'll EBAY it and try a set of those geIL Black Dragons.

  • MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum - No Mem Voltage Settings?

I recently bought an MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum; along with a Phenom II 940 Black Edition and a set of OCZ Reaper 4gb PC8500/1066 DDR2.
I had, for awhile read that this motherboard was a great board and an excellent buy.
However, I can't seem to find a way to adjust the DRAM Voltage settings.  I can change and adjust the memory timings, but not the voltage settings.
CPUz shows that my RAM is running at 1.8volts but it requires 2.1v!  It also shows that all the mem timings are different from what they're set at in the BIOS.
Is there a way to unlock the Mem Voltage settings on this Motherboard?
If not, I may have to RMA it and get something else.

Don't have every bit of that info in front of my at the moment, but I can say, and show, where links are available...

Creative also came out with some new Drivers for that X-Fi sometime in 2008.  I do not remember the Driver version or the exact date they were released, but I have tried them.
Also, I have tried rolling back the Geforce drivers back through several prior versions and ran tests with those as well, always with the same result.
I'll be removing one of the 8800GT's later on tonight when I get the chance and see what happens there.
One thing I noticed last night, is that the Mobo's Hybrid SLI is enabled with the OnBoard Video Port.  I can not disable the Onboard, unless the Hybrid is disabled first.  The cursor just skips over the listing for OnBoard when the Hybrid is enabled which is understandable.
However, when Hybrid is disabled and the settings saved, and system rebooted... its gets up to the WinXP Splash Screen then flashes a blue screen and automatically reboots and does this in a loop; until Hybrid is re-enabled.
At present, DRAM is manual configured in BIOS for 5.5.5.18 timings, and 2.20 voltage; as per manufacturer specs.  CPU, is manually set at v1.350; which became available after re-flashing BIOS last night, and re-clearing CMOS.

  • K9N2 Sli Platinum - won't boot? Can't figure out problem.

Hey guys. My computer practically crapped itself the other day, and there were so many symptoms I'm not quite sure
    what to even search for.
I've had this computer for about a year now. no problems since the day i built it.
    specs:
    Msi K9n2 Sli Platinum mobo
    AMD Athlon 64x2 3.2 Ghz
    2x BFG Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX+
    2x Cosair xms2 2gb ddr2
    1000 watt BFG EX Series
    Sony DvD drive
    1tb western digital drive
So i was playing SC2 and my computer froze. So i restarted and it hung during windows loading.
I turned it off waited a few seconds and started... still hung. Cycled it and tried a couple more times.
Still nothing. Naturally i assumed it was a virus so i repaired my windows installation. After it finished it hung on
Windows has finished repairing your computer will now restart. I waited about an hour and decided to just restart
myself. Next time it booted asked me if i wanted to boot from cd and then it just shutdown like i pulled the plug.
Then i thought well i ruined my windows install. I tried booting again it did the same thing. So i just said screw it
ill reformat. But this time there was no signal from my graphics card. When i turn the computer on it will normally
be loud and then get quiet after everything has booted. But now it just turns on and stays loud because i suspect
it's still booting. So i took everything apart. Tried connecting and unconnecting everything. moving ram etc...
Ive got it to boot twice but after that it crashes before windows loads like a plug pull and it wont boot again.
I cant tell whats wrong it could be everything but nothing makes sense. I've built about 7 or 8 computers.
gotten rid of several viruses and bad hardware but I've never seen anything like this.
I tried checking the LED codes for the board. Leds 11 and 10 and 9 and 8 alternate red and green which means HDD and floppy drive are trying to boot.
but it does that even when my harddrive is not connected and it still wont show video. Ive even rotated the graphics cards and tried a 7900gs. nothing.
Edit: now led 6 and 7 are red.
    please help me out. Thanks.

Yeah the case i have is the antec 1200. Never had a problem with heat before.
Ive tried it with just the ram and the cpu and it still gives me the lights so i
guess it must be the mobo or processor. I don't have another motherboard to test everything else on
all my other pcs are 5 to 7 years old.
I was thinking about keeping all my old parts and buying these as replacements:

  • K9N2 Sli Platinum + SSD OCZ Vertex 3 = Slow Speed Problem [PARTIALLY SOLVED]

    Hey folks,
I have a problem with my new SSD. I only get sequential reads of 140MB/s and writes of 114MB/s.
I think it is a driver related issue. I once got faster SATA2-like speeds but cannot reproduce the system settings again... Everything back to SATA1-like speeds after reboot.
    First my pc specs:
MSI K9N2 Sli Platinum, BIOS v3.9
    - 6 SATAII ports by nForce 750a SLI
    - 2 ESATA (External-SATA) ports (back panel) by JMB363
    - Supports storage and data transfers at up to 3 Gb/s
    AMD Phenom II 965 Black
    Patriot PV224G8500ELKB Viper II Series DDR2 4GB (2 x 2GB, CL5 PC-8500/1066MHz)
SSD SATAIII OCZ Vertex 3, 120GB, FW v2.11
    LG Internal BlueRay BH10LS30
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I only get very slow speeds with the SSD. I tried so many things that I am getting very frustrated now, I am even thinking about getting a new board and ram just to get the SSD up to speed...
    1)
I installed Win7 first with all the default settings in Windows Setup from DVD. Default "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" driver was "Standard AHCI1.0 Serial ATA Controller".
SSD was connected to SATA1-port,  On-Chip Sata Controller AHCI enabled in BIOS,  Extra RAID/IDE Controller disabled.
All fine, but whichever benchmark I used (AS SSD, HD Tune Pro, Atto Disk Benchmark, CrystalDiskMark; other tools used: DriveControllerInfo, AIDA64/Everest, CrystalDiskInfo ) I got e.g. 140MB/s Read and 114MB/s Write sequentially (CrystalDiskmark, similar with random data AND only zeros ).
Trim working (it seems) with AHCI driver. I also changed to nvstor64 driver (nforce driver setup 15.56), with is marginally faster but not what you would expect from a SATAIII drive on SATAII controller.
    2)
I installed Win7 using "diskpart" (Shift-F10) during disk setup, setting a cluster size of 64k instead of default. No real change.
    3)
After reinstall of Win7 x64 (again...), I changed from SATA1 port to SATA6 port, also enabled Extra Raid/IDE controller set to AHCI as well.
Nothing changed. With all settings to default in Windows (ahci default driver), I then manually updated the ahci to nvstore64 driver in Device Management, rebooted.
Then a minute later after reboot I got the following Sequential speeds with CrystalDiskMark:
273MB/s read and 137MB/s write (random data)  +  274MB/s read and 220MB/s write (with zeros) !!!
While I ran this benchmark Windows came up with a message: "You must restart your computer to apply these changes - Restart Now/Restart Later".
After the previos reboot, when I changed manually from AHCI to NVSTORE, I had changed nothing in the current session, apart from running CrystalDiskMark.
I did reboot and I was back to the slow SSD speeds again = 140/114 MB/s...
    4)
I have tried every possible combination of mainboard SATA ports, drivers changing with nvidia setup/manually, deleting and disabling controllers (incl BSOD and startup repair :D ), chaning bios settings around, but I just cannot get back the faster speeds
There is never any change in speed, whether I use ahci or nvstore64, whichever benchmark I use, whether random or zeros...
    5)
Could the SSD be broken, something internally preventing it from faster speeds (with this one random exception)?
Could it be that my K9N2 SataPorts only allows for / reduced to SATA1 speeds?
Am I missing something with the driver setup?
Do I need additional drivers for the extra JMicron Controller when using SataPorts 5/6 ?
I have no other mainboard to test this with...
Please guys, I am going to jump out of the window if I can't fix it... :(
    Thanks, Mike

    Hey guys - problem 'solved':
I tested the OCZ SSD Vertex 3 120GB with following sata3 controller card http://www.lycom.com.tw/PE-115H.htm.
The card itself works immediately (needs at least PCIe x4 slot, will work slower otherwise but still faster than the OCZ SSD @sata1 with nvidia chipset).
There is some raid setup, doesn't apply to me, the boot even with the card is really only a few seconds longer and not annoying at all. Windows (7 x64) needed a driver, supplied on CD (which is cheap and making noise like h**l). The card works w/o the driver but doesn't harm to install it...
Also, just to clarify, this sata controller card did not need any specific setup at all. Just put it in, plug in sata cable (I use akasa sata3-rated), maybe change boot device in BIOS (I didn't even have to), done - booting Windows as usual.
Benchmark CDM with sata controller card Lycom PE-115H:
    http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3845/cdmpe115hahci0x00.png
    http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/7549/cdmpe115hahcirand.png
Speed is much better than before with nvidia chipset 750a SLI controller: sata1 (sata2 whenever it randomly worked):

    http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/6258/cdmahci0x0sata6contnv64.png
    Final thoughts:
Well, I am happy with the SSD speed now (PCIe limited to 5Gbps). However, I had to spent quite some time to get it working on my sata2-cabable mainboard. Finally, I had to buy a extra controller card to get it working reliably at speeds faster than sata1. There is hardly any useful information on why this problem occurs with (older) nvidia chipsets and OCZ (sata3) SSDs. I still think that OCZ must know about this problem, but regards this issue as low priority, while at the same time not planning on giving up on sales to people with nvidia chipsets. Maybe OCZ should just make a big sticker on the box the drives come in with something like "Does/Might not work with nvidia chipsets, please use third-party sata controller card or different SSD manufacturer".   But then none of these potential customers would buy OCZ SSDs...
I will keep the sata3 controller, anyway handy to have, but return the OCZ Vertex 3 120GB and replace it with a SSD from a different manufacturer (Corsair Force GT, Patriot and OWC are not that great to get around here). The benchmarks for most people will not achieve the maximum advertised OCZ speeds anyway, so why not go with a brand that allows for some plug'n'play with some customer support.
Hope this post helps others like me with their nvidia chipset  + sata1 speed problem
    Cheers, Mike

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum / Phenom II 940BE overvolting and buzzing at load

I have seen many posts related to this issue, but have found no solution.  The only thread which seemed to be going somewhere went off topic and was closed before anything could be resolved
My Phenom II 940BE, at load, is constantly being overvolted between 1.37-.38 and 1.40v.  In the BIOS, after a fresh CMOS reset, I see the processor is set to 1.80v in the cell menu.  This is a false reading, though, since the hardware monitor still has it between the aforementioned 1.37-.38 and 1.40v.  Regardless, the lowest setting I have available with the CPU voltage setting in the Cell Menu is 1.375v then AUTO.
I have tried using many BIOS images with freshly cleared CMOS (remove battery, power cables from motherboard, wait a few minutes etc.): 3.4 3.5 and a MSI tech provided 3.6B1 BIOS all produce the same behavior.
When my CPU is at load, a light buzzing sound can be heard from the CPU area of the motherboard.  This is especially noticeable when cool n quiet is enabled and the system decides to go from 800MHz to 3GHz, the buzzing is for the duration of the up-clocking until clocked back to 800MHz.  I had the same issue on Vista x64 as well as Win 7.  After some time at 3GHz the buzzing seems to go away, but may be drowned out by a fan or two.
Has anyone found some sort of resolve for this issue?
    System Specs:
    K9N2 SLI Platinum
    Phenom II 940BE stock
    Stock AMD cooler
8 gig of OCZ DDR-II 800 RAM (OCZ2N800SR2G) at stock
    BFG GeForce 9800GT 1gig stock
    Windows 7 X64 RTM
    EDIMAX Wireless card 802.11n
Enermax Liberty Power Supply 500W (link)
    2x Samsung Ecogreen 500gig in RAID0
    Pioneer DVD-RW (SATA)
    Onboard sound

Problem 1: solved.  The metal curly thing by the RAM was buzzing.  Unfortunately I do not have a hot glue gun and pressing on it with an eraser from a pencil did not alleviate buzzing, so removing 2 sticks of ram did it.  I had 4x 2gb sticks.  Taking out 2 stopped almost all of the buzzing sound, but sadly now I am running with only 4 gig of ram vs my mighty 8
Problem 2 still remains, the mystery of my CPU being at 1.38 - 1.40V instead of 1.350 when set to AUTO in the BIOS.

  • MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum nForce 750a Problem

I bought this barebone kit a couple days ago http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4692741&CatId=3508 and I had no troubles, I installed the 4GB Sli-READY 2GB RAM and thought that it wouldn't hurt to have another 4GB. So I bought the same RAM, and installed it, I started to get BSOD when I start programs, or games like "Lineage 2". I tried changing the voltage on DRAM but l can't change it to 1.8v, or 2.1v (2.1v says that the pc might be unstable) so l set it to auto. l also made it [AUTO] for SLI-READY DRAM. l still get BSOD.
Help would be greatly appreciated, the specs on the computer are:
    MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum Motherboard
    AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Ed. 2.50GHz
    OCZ SLI 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 / 8GB
Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB Hard Drive
    Ultra LSP550 550-Watt Power Supply
    (2) XFX nVidia 9800GT 512MB (1GB cause l have 2) SLI - Ready
    Sound Blaster Audigy SE
My operating system is a Windows XP 64bit Edition.

By default it should be already 2T, verify that with CPU-Z memory tab{Command Rate} ==> http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz/cpuz_151_setup.exe

  • MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum problems again

Like many of you all who suggested me to RMA my board couple weeks ago.  Well, looks like I finally got the board back and I decided to give it a go.  Put in my computer parts (CPU, Ram, using on-board vga/dvi) and gave it a go.  I turned on and then I see the same red light that occurred to me in the previous problem that I had before sending it in.  I am thinking MSI didn't thoroughly test the board enough?  I tried sticking the memory stick in different slots to see if that would help, still no go.  I switched/changed cpu   I contacted MSI and they said to reseat the CPU and check PSU. I told them that my PSU is brand new (Corsair 650TX) and confirmed them that it is indeed working.  I took it out of the case to test by putting a cardboard underneath the motherboard using only 1 stick of ram in DIMM1 slot.  Reseat/re-inserted the CPU and heatsink fan in.  Connect the DVI cable to the on-board dvi connection.  Then I took a flat screw driver and turned it on, I saw the CPU fan spin and the PSU fan spinning but the same red light showed up.  I am still stuck and wonder what other options I have left.
    MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
    AMD64 X2 5400
2x2GB Corsair (I am only using 1 stick to test at the moment)
Using onboard video instead of my 8800GT
Corsair 650TX watts (tested and it is brand new)
I feel like I don't know what else to do except I could take it to a computer technician to have a second look at it.  If anyone have suggestion, I'd be happy to try.

I have done all of the following you listed except for testing the CPU in another machine.  I will bring the two cpu to a local shop and have them tested.  I will report back.

Do you have power cable for the CPU connected?
Does the CPU works in another machine?
Have you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed?
    Have you tested with mainboard out of PC case too? {With one memory stick in 1st DIMM close to CPU socket}
Does the CPU is properly installed?
Checked CPU for bent pins too?

  • MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum problem

I just got my Corsair 650TX PSU from the mail today. Installed it and connected everything.  When I turned the power on, nothing showed up.  I did see red lights, and I thought "oh no...".  So I went to check the manual and said if it red, then my old PSU must've taken out my CPU out at the same time.  I did see my graphic card spinning, *relief*  So I just wanted to double check with you guys if that's my CPU is totally gone/dead for good?  I checked all connectors and made sure there was no problem.  Everything was connected and well plugged.
My specs under sig as usual:
    MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
    AMD 64 X2 4000+ 2.8Ghz (OC'D)
    Bios Version 3.1 (6/3/2008)
    2X 2 GB Corsair RAM 5-5-5-18  468.8 MHZ
    EVGA 8800GT 512MB DDR3
    16X DVD+/- RW Dual Layer
    Corsair 650TX Watts PSU
Any help would be deeply appreciated.

I agree, probably other parts went up in smoke as well.
The first thing comes to mind it the board is damaged too, as it's the first part being connected to the PSU.
    Quote from: a4m4d64 on 15-January-09, 22:25:39
Most likely,  the board shorted and fried the PS,   Board RMA ????
Oh no...I hope the board isn't dead.  I am going to be getting a new CPU and I will find out if it works or not.  *Keeping my fingers cross.*
Another thing, I doubt the board is dead, because when I turned it back on, all the light is still lit upon powering up.  So its obviously still working.  But no post screen, and like I said before, upon looking at the LED lights according to page 2-26 on my manual, I got the first box.  It states "System PowerOn- The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly".  So I know first thing come to mind is that I am certain the processor is installed properly when my original PSU died.  I never took it out.  Which left me the final choice, the CPU is officially dead/fried or however you want to call it.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum w/ Phenom II 940BE - Overclocking Advice?

So I am wondering if any other USERS out there, can give any advice on how they've managed to overclock their Phenom II 940 "BE"s on an MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum motherboard?
Now that I got my board running rock solid and stable, I am interested in venturing in this territory and I am curious as to what sort of "stable overclocks" others have achieved and how you configured to achieve such?

Quote from: TheCello on 02-April-09, 01:55:00
I have mine @ 3.4GHz on stock vCore w/ bios 3.3 (vCore is at 1.375ish) with the multiplier settings and the FSB at 200.
Which sucks, because I don't want the extra voltage.  I need my proc to stay under 50C and playing crysis, it reaches exaclty 50C.
This is only a minimal increase in perfrormance tho.   What I really want, is to be able to overclock the HT link.  unfortunately, if I set it to 2000mhz, I get instant freeze at boot, if it even posts at all.  Trying to install BIOS 3.4 today.    lets see how it works =)
How are you getting it 2000mhz HT? Raising the HT multiplier will not render a bootup. Incrementally raising HT will get you there....with CPU multiplier raised, a little bit of HT will give better Numbers on the CPU - Say 17 x 215 as opposed to stock 17 x 200. My brother has that board, 215+HT no problem, he has a thermaltake active Heatpipe Northbridge cooler attached to the stock cooling.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum Problem? please help.

I have a K9N2 SLi Platinum board and i set it up yesterday.  I'm having problems with some stuff though.
Situation: I can start up the comp and all lights turn up bright and pretty, all fans work; good news.  But the video card stuff won't display on the screen... I doubt this is a motherboard issue but that's not what i'm asking help with.  What i'm truly asking is what does 4 RED LIGHTS on the motherbaord RIGHT ABOVE the 16x PCI-E 16 x2 slot mean???
    -Thanks in advance!
    LOOK AT POST AT BOTTOM!
    VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

thank youall for helping with that problem, now i feel stupid for not noticing that should b eplugged in!...
    but if you guys would like to help me with 1 more problem that'd be great;
Trying to get it so i can Install Vista via CD-ROM.
When i started up the computer yesterday it would go to a screen that i could access the bios by pushing the delete button during that time... Now it doesn't come up thus i can't access BIOS.  Small problem but whatever.  Also when i start it now it goes to the black screen (console i believe everyone calls it) and it says:
"Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device or Instert Boot Media in selected Boot Device and press a key_"
Please tell me what to do!  I believe the boot device is the HDD or the CD-ROM.  But in BIOS the other day neither the HDD or CD-ROM Drive would show in the boot devices thing.
    -Thanks in advance again!

My Conclusion is that the lights are messed.
I have both yellow and Green light at the bottom of my motherboard.
    In the instructions it says
Green light means the computer is powered on
    Yellow means computer is standby.
The yellow light is on 24/7 even if the computer is off
The green light is on when i turn the computer (which is right)
I installed DualCoreCenter From MSI and it causes bsod.
The computer was working fine until I ran Prime95. It shutdown. And than it shutdown twice a starting windows screen. It worked fine after a while, but it shutdown again now. I dont wonna turn it on again.
My problem is somewhat similar to this persons.

Recently installed a 1090T on N9N2 Diamond and did testing on K9N2 SLI Platinum.  All good after I flashed to 2.8 (the correct BIOS for that CPU).  I Had the same problem with CPU sticking to heatsink, It was not caused by heat, I suspect the socket is weak.  I just carefully pried it off.
Did I miss something?  How did everyone jump on the CPU cooler without knowing what sort of case it's installed in/# of fans/what size fans, etc...?
did you have the same problem with different bios?

    Hi guys,
Had my lovely new  M/B for a few months now and It has been a wonderful board.
despite one hiccup where the PCIE bus had a moment / died ( flashing the BIOS to latest fixed it )
    My setup currently :
    Jeantech Storm 700w Modular PSU
    MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
    AMD Phenom 9550
    with Zalman silent fan
4GB crap ass RAM  (that's a real brand .. honest)
2 x BFG 9800GTX+OC in SLI    I likes these .. they make lovely noises in my dark room  .. VrrrrUmmmmmmm mmm mmmm mmm
500 GB slow ass HDD  (Again the marketing dept of this brand were out to lunch when they launched it)
    Windows 7 RC. latest build
    Nvidia Det's  190.xxx  latest driver
mostly playing Fallout 3  (graphics are beautiful but notice the CPU is lagging behind now)
So to the Crux of my issues :-
I'm looking to upgrade a few things here though,
as you can see a few components are severely bottlenecking performance.
    First off the RAM.
going to get some nice Kingston 1066 DDR2 (4GB or should I go for 8GB ?)
next .. a WD VelociRaptor 10k rpm HDD  probably just a small 74GB or the 150GB drive
and finally the pies de resistance  ( yes PIES ! .. I like PIES !!)   shiny new AMD Phenom 965 CPU
SO...   Will the 965 phenom work in this board ?   I've logged on tech support but no answer,
latest BIOS is installed already 7374v35 i think.
    I know it's a 140W CPU so okay there,
    the Socket AM2+/AM3 is good
.. I just NEED to be sure before spending £200.00
if not .. is it worth getting the 945 or 955 BE and clocking them ... could the board handle clocking the 965  ??
and last of all,  if any one has any opinions on the build .. let me know...   have you built a similar rig ?
    cheers all
    PIES out ~!
    OCD

    WoW !!
Thanks for the replies guys,  I really appreciate it...
and after a drunken bout of spontaneous cash wastage on the internet last night  :
    1) AMDOA06KNF PHENOM II X4 965          £151.07
    2) WDGA060T2  WD VELOCI RAPT 150GB   £99.07
    3) KTEA069M4  4GB 1066MHZ DDR2          £41.70
     ... goods on the way...
So I guess in a few days I'll be able to update you all on the build and will more than likely be updating this post with my random moronic questions and queries when the next thing goes wrong
    looking into Power requirements
9800GTX+ SLI requires a min 550w PSU .. and so far in top gaming and 3D benchs hasn't gone over 250w on the meter ( pretty good I think)
the Zalman CNPS9700 LED  seems to keep everything cool without any power to the fan... but I leave power on low just for the pretty blue lights
I'm happy to listen to any advice though,
One thing I will need is any pointers you can give on the K9N2  built in OC facility in the BIOS .. is it any good .. can I TRUST it to not fry my CPU by running it on auto ?   is there any recommended settings ?  etc.   your thoughts and experiences welcomed
