K9N2 SLI Platinum: LED Codes and System Freezes

This morning I was working to resolve an issue with system freezes I have been having over the last few days. Upon restarting the computer I noticed that all four of my LEDs are currently red. If I remember correctly, this indicates a CPU issue. Due to this, I believe that the system freezes are being caused by the CPU, however I have yet to notice any issues other than the occasional freeze. According to CoreCenter my CPU temp idles at about 40-43c and peaks at about 50c when gaming, so I do not believe that the CPU is overheating. Is it possible that the CPU is still the problem if it is not overheating and I am not noticing diminished performance?
I have had this system over a year and have never had these issues before, nor have I replaced any hardware. The only software changes have been Windows updates and games. Nothing major. I am currently using Comodo and SuperAntiSpyware for my firewall/antivirus/antispyware programs.
If any additional information is needed, please ask. Thank you for your time.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum led questions

Hello all, I have the K9N2 SLI Platinum, everything is working pretty well for me, I just have a couple questions about the motherboard LED lights..
    from the manual>> "LED 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11
These four LEDs allow users to identify system problems through 16 various combinations
    of LED signals."
First question: All are leds in that group are "green" meaning "Operating System Booting".....these LEDS stay on the whole time though when running Windows, is that normal? Everything is running fine in Windows XP SP2
Second question: Also on the board near the bottem LED15 and LED16, now led15 lights whens the system is power on, I understand that, but LED16 constantly stays lit as well, a orange color, states it's for "standy mode", so basicly I don't get why it would stay on all the time, doesn't seem to be causing problems though.
    my specs:  AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ AM2 125W,  Thermaltake Toughpower 850W ATX12V / EPS12V,  mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB)DDR2 800 1.8V,  DIAMOND Viper Radeon HD 3870 PCI Express 2.0 x16,  MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum (MS-7374) BIOS version 3.1

Everything you describe is perfectly normal for the LEDs.
1 - normal, will show all green after successful POST and loading OS and remain lit from there on untill shut down.
2 - LED 15 lit when PC is powered on, normal
LED 16 shows that PSU is on and providing stand by power to MB, basically shows that PSU is plugged in, turned on and ready to power PC and will stay lit as long as PSU is on, again normal.
    If that's it then

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum: LED's not 4 greens but system appears to work

I'm getting an LED error code but my system works. The error is reds on groups 1 & 2 and greens on groups 3 & 4 which the manual describes as "Initializing Hard Drive Controller. This will initialize IDE drive and controller.". I would have guessed that once the OS is starting to load everything should be green (I know that's how it used to be).
    What does this mean?
    Thanks in advance.

I realized later that it has also been unstable. That is, I have had instances of it running with two red lights and instances of it crashing (4 red lights and perhaps other LED codes). I think that I might have enabled something in the Green Power Center. Perhaps it's been undervolting something or doing something else which is producing instability? Just wild speculation on my part as I can't even tell what is actually happening when it's crashed because I don't have a monitor at the moment* (I've been running it remotely).
I'll see if I have green lights when I get home (I left it on --I have it running some sort of program now called Stress Prime 2004).
    * I've sent it for RMA service.
4 greens after 4 hours with a cpu load after uninstalling Dual Core vs. unstable without a load a short time after booting or stable but with 2 red lights also unloaded. Let's see if the trend continues after a few reboots.
Also unmentioned is the fact that Green Power Center crashes on program close for me. This happened with the version on the cd as well as with the newest version.

  • K9N2 Sli Platinum led and hibernate problem

Hello all. I built a system in October 2008. The system was fine or appeared to be.I have the 4 red diagnostic leds. I was about to add more ram when I noticed the 4 red diagnostic lights.I had it below my desk so I am not sure for how long. If I reboot the system the lights are green and they will stay green as long as i do not suspend. But once I suspend it always comes back from suspend with red leds. I have built several systems so I have tested every component in the system except CPU. Taken everything out of case, reseated, everything I can think of. I know the red lights are supposed to mean a bad CPU but wouldn't they be red at all times rather than awake from suspend only? Could the logic board of mobo be bad? I always had it setup for S3 suspend so I decided to try S1 and it does not work. Any help is appreciated.

    alnbob,

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum LED Status Lights

    System Info
    9950BE
    4x2 GB 1066 DDR2
    GTX 260
OCZ 600W Stealth X Stream PSU
I just purchased the MB, CPU, and Ram last week and have been reinstalling Vista the last couple days (had to do it a couple times due to my personal screwups).  I haven't had time to really test out stability and all of that, but 3D Mark Vantage runs fine, and any games I have briefly tested do well too.  I noticed, though, that the LED Status Lights are dancing around.
Group 4 - Flashing Between Red and Green
    Group 5 - Red
    Group 6 - Red
Group 7 - Flashing twice as fast between Red and Green than Group 4.
Does anyone know what this configuration of lights means?  It does it as soon as I turn on the system, and stays like this.  I can not find any info online to help me out, and the manual doesn't give info on "flashing" lights either.  I know my PSU isn't ideal, but since everything else I have done works, I'm wondering if it truly is the problem or not.
I just basically want to know if this is something I should be genuinely worried about?  And if I should, does it mean the board has a problem or another component?
    Thanks for your time!

I have lowered the memory down to 800, no difference.  I haven't done anything with the processor FSB and don't plan to (just spent a lot of money on this system and I'm not going to kill it now).
I'm beginning to think I just shouldn't worry about it.  I just got through the FEAR 2 demo on this PC with all visual settings maxed (Res 2048x1536, 4xAA) and it ran beautifully.
I am still going to run to Microcenter now and get a better PSU just to be safe, but at this point, I'm going to write it off as a bad status LED.  Of course, if anyone has any other ideas or worries, please pass them on.

  • Issue with K9N2 SLI Platinum LED Status Indicators?

I don't know if there is a problem or not with my K9N2 mb. When I turn my computer on the LED Status Indicators (LED 4-11) immediately show red, red, green green. It doesn't run through the usual initialization/tests that it would normally go through. However, my computer boots up just fine (using it right now). This combination of LED's says that there is a problem with initializing the IDE controller, but I don't have any IDE devices. So, I don't know if there is a problem or not, but I just don't want to ignore it either. It used to not do this, it would run through the initialization/tests normally. The only thing that I have done was upgrade the PSU from a Silverstone Zeus ST65ZF 650watt to a Ultra X4 1200watt. Any help or information would be appreciated, thanks.

Well, I guess that's nice to know.  As long as everything is working, I'll just ignore it. I was just wanting to be safe than sorry. Thanks.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum: USB mouse works, other USB devices iffy or not at all.

I have a K9N2 SLI Platinum running now, and lately it's become rather flakey on me.  Windows Mobile device center cut out on me last month when I tried to update the phone software, which I guess should have been the first clue.  I notice that the flash drives I connect aren't showing up, and the new Ipod I bought last week doesn't show up at all, either.
    Symptoms include:
    1. When I connect my HTC Excalibur up, Windows 7 realizes this is a phone, and starts up or installs Windows Mobile Device Center for me.  However, midway through installing the actual device, it stops and tells me the device is disconnected.  The phone is plugged in, and I've been afraid to touch it during this process.  On rare occasions, the phone actually is detected and installed, somewhere in the next dozen connections it reverts back to the drawing board, though.
    2. I have a bunch of flash drives that never show up on the computer now.  At least one of them showed up in the past, and transferred files just fine.  When I plug them in, I don't get the new device connected noise, and they don't show up in the System screen.
    3. I've managed to completely kill the batteries of two separate Ipods.  (Which actually worked out for me when they let me upgrade the new nano to a new classic).  It doesn't detect that anything is attached to the USB line.  Doesn't matter if I hook it up in disk mode, run "the 5Rs" or what, these little buggers starve to death on the line.
    4. Throughout all of these situations, two devices work no matter which rear USB slots I hook them to: the Microsoft Mouse, and my HP PSC 2700 printer.  So long as I don't pull them out while the machine is running, I don't have to do anything special to get Windows 7 to find and use them.  Unplugging the printer will get the device disconnected noise, but does not free up any resources to detect anything else attached.
    5. The front two USB slots don't work at all.  I don't think they've ever worked for me, so I'll deal with that mess sometime later.  Turning the computer off, unplugging these, and restarting with just the 4 rear slots enabled does not help the problem.
    What I've tried so far:
    1. Reinstalling Windows 7 after formatting the partition.
    2. Reinstalling the Nvidia nforce drivers from Nvidia's site using my board/processor specs.
    3. Reinstalling the software that normally detects these devices: Itunes, Windows MDC, etc.
    4. I've attempted to uninstall the USB drivers, but as the mouse connects here, that's been forcing a hard restart instead of shutting Windows7 down as normal.  On restart, mouse is reinstalled but problem remains.
    5. I've tried disabling Legacy USB drivers in the BIOS. No dice.
    6. I can't get a BIOS flash to work from the Live Update tools, (perhaps for the better), and the USB sticks aren't working to flash from one of those.  (Granted I can still boot and I'm otherwise stable).
All I can think of is that maybe prior to reinstallation I pulled off something with CCleaner that I actually needed, but the reinstallation should have fixed that if it was a registry error.

I'm sorry, I need to be a bit clearer, apparently.  The devices on the list were not plugged in at the same time.  Instead, I decided to see which if any devices would work by plugging them in one at a time.  The printer was plugged in for all of them, as was the mouse, then I repeated the one at a time process with both the printer and the mouse unplugged to see if anything new happened.  Results were posted line by line on the list above.
Now then, I have managed to get my hands on an x86 version of Windows 7.  Surprise, surprise, it works.  Phone not only detects, but also installs.  When I plug in a Sandisk Cruiser, Windows 7 finds it, powers it up, installs drivers and assigns it a drive letter within about 5 seconds.  I haven't gotten around to installing the iTunes yet and getting the iPod running, but I suspect it'll work if everything else is showing up now.  Thus far, the only thing that hasn't worked when installed is the Logitec Gamepad, but then again I just plugged this one in to satisfy my curiousity.  There are probably some drivers I need if I want to actually play games with it.
While this seems like it would solve the issue, the problem remains that I bought the board so I could eventually upgrade the RAM well beyond the 2GB I have installed.  Since x86 seems to only go up to 3GB, that's going to kind of defeat my purpose there.  Also, I've only got 30 days on this install, then I'm back to square one where I have to either use my x64 license/disc to get a legal, crippled copy going, or reinstall another x86 build.  Pretty sure copy protection will start kicking in soon on that.
    Any Ideas?

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum Freeze

I did a build 3 weeks ago and everything was smooth as silk. Then this morning was reading up on the news online and system shut down. Try to turn power back on and all leds light green to say OS loading but nothing happens. No post, no bios, no feed out any of the video. Have tried swapping out memory, video cards, using on-board video, clearing cmos, pulling battery and let it sit for an hour. Nothing I do makes any change. I press the power button, the d-led lights green instantly, green #15 for power and the orange for standby, both for the pci-e cards. Please let some one have an idea other than replacing my cpu.

    4gigs 1066mhz Kingston HyperX

    Vista Ultimate64
    Acer 22" LCD

Man oh man, I found the issue alright. After trying everything under the sun including all your suggestions, I finally pulled the ruby orb cpu fan off. Scorch marks on the CPU. With low running temps, I'm not sure how it could be other than just a bad cpu. Tigerdirect(whom I purchased it through) said they refuse to exchange it even though I'm under 30 days, but luckily after contacting their supplier (no help from tiger) they are going to swap it for me. Only fear is, could some fault have happened on the motherboard to cause this? Or could the psu have spiked? But if the psu spiked, wouldn't the motherboard be completely dead instead of just unresponsive? Also, one chip on the board above the am2 plug-in and toward the rear looks a little different. Not cooked so much as just not as shiny as the others near it. Could there be a problem there? Don't want to be sticking in a new cpu just to have it fry cause of the motherboard being faulty. Thanks for your ideas.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum / Phenom II 940BE overvolting and buzzing at load

I have seen many posts related to this issue, but have found no solution.  The only thread which seemed to be going somewhere went off topic and was closed before anything could be resolved
My Phenom II 940BE, at load, is constantly being overvolted between 1.37-.38 and 1.40v.  In the BIOS, after a fresh CMOS reset, I see the processor is set to 1.80v in the cell menu.  This is a false reading, though, since the hardware monitor still has it between the aforementioned 1.37-.38 and 1.40v.  Regardless, the lowest setting I have available with the CPU voltage setting in the Cell Menu is 1.375v then AUTO.
I have tried using many BIOS images with freshly cleared CMOS (remove battery, power cables from motherboard, wait a few minutes etc.): 3.4 3.5 and a MSI tech provided 3.6B1 BIOS all produce the same behavior.
When my CPU is at load, a light buzzing sound can be heard from the CPU area of the motherboard.  This is especially noticeable when cool n quiet is enabled and the system decides to go from 800MHz to 3GHz, the buzzing is for the duration of the up-clocking until clocked back to 800MHz.  I had the same issue on Vista x64 as well as Win 7.  After some time at 3GHz the buzzing seems to go away, but may be drowned out by a fan or two.
Has anyone found some sort of resolve for this issue?
    System Specs:
    K9N2 SLI Platinum
    Phenom II 940BE stock
    Stock AMD cooler
8 gig of OCZ DDR-II 800 RAM (OCZ2N800SR2G) at stock
    BFG GeForce 9800GT 1gig stock
    Windows 7 X64 RTM
    EDIMAX Wireless card 802.11n
Enermax Liberty Power Supply 500W (link)
    2x Samsung Ecogreen 500gig in RAID0
    Pioneer DVD-RW (SATA)
    Onboard sound

Problem 1: solved.  The metal curly thing by the RAM was buzzing.  Unfortunately I do not have a hot glue gun and pressing on it with an eraser from a pencil did not alleviate buzzing, so removing 2 sticks of ram did it.  I had 4x 2gb sticks.  Taking out 2 stopped almost all of the buzzing sound, but sadly now I am running with only 4 gig of ram vs my mighty 8
Problem 2 still remains, the mystery of my CPU being at 1.38 - 1.40V instead of 1.350 when set to AUTO in the BIOS.

    Hi guys,
Had my lovely new  M/B for a few months now and It has been a wonderful board.
despite one hiccup where the PCIE bus had a moment / died ( flashing the BIOS to latest fixed it )
    My setup currently :
    Jeantech Storm 700w Modular PSU
    MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
    AMD Phenom 9550
    with Zalman silent fan
4GB crap ass RAM  (that's a real brand .. honest)
2 x BFG 9800GTX+OC in SLI    I likes these .. they make lovely noises in my dark room  .. VrrrrUmmmmmmm mmm mmmm mmm
500 GB slow ass HDD  (Again the marketing dept of this brand were out to lunch when they launched it)
    Windows 7 RC. latest build
    Nvidia Det's  190.xxx  latest driver
mostly playing Fallout 3  (graphics are beautiful but notice the CPU is lagging behind now)
So to the Crux of my issues :-
I'm looking to upgrade a few things here though,
as you can see a few components are severely bottlenecking performance.
    First off the RAM.
going to get some nice Kingston 1066 DDR2 (4GB or should I go for 8GB ?)
next .. a WD VelociRaptor 10k rpm HDD  probably just a small 74GB or the 150GB drive
and finally the pies de resistance  ( yes PIES ! .. I like PIES !!)   shiny new AMD Phenom 965 CPU
SO...   Will the 965 phenom work in this board ?   I've logged on tech support but no answer,
latest BIOS is installed already 7374v35 i think.
    I know it's a 140W CPU so okay there,
    the Socket AM2+/AM3 is good
.. I just NEED to be sure before spending £200.00
if not .. is it worth getting the 945 or 955 BE and clocking them ... could the board handle clocking the 965  ??
and last of all,  if any one has any opinions on the build .. let me know...   have you built a similar rig ?
    cheers all
    PIES out ~!

     ... goods on the way...
So I guess in a few days I'll be able to update you all on the build and will more than likely be updating this post with my random moronic questions and queries when the next thing goes wrong
    looking into Power requirements
9800GTX+ SLI requires a min 550w PSU .. and so far in top gaming and 3D benchs hasn't gone over 250w on the meter ( pretty good I think)
the Zalman CNPS9700 LED  seems to keep everything cool without any power to the fan... but I leave power on low just for the pretty blue lights
I'm happy to listen to any advice though,
One thing I will need is any pointers you can give on the K9N2  built in OC facility in the BIOS .. is it any good .. can I TRUST it to not fry my CPU by running it on auto ?   is there any recommended settings ?  etc.   your thoughts and experiences welcomed

have you tried uping the voltage, the black dragon works perfect at 1066 from 2.2v to 2.4v, however the gskill requires 2.3v to work perfect at 1066 (so my setup its 2x1gb geil and 2x1gb gskill (total 4gb) voltage set to 2.3v) if i dont set 2.3v i get completely random restarts (could be after afew hours or afew days), all passed with prime and occt.
just in case, after bios reset ddr is set to 800 as default ,go into bios and set divider to 1066, then set timings to 5-5-5-15 (dont use auto/sli ready) bios sets strange timings by default at 1066 then set voltage and save.
I've tried everything and even chatted with MSI Techs over it all, been back and forth between MSI and OCZ for about a month now.. bottom line, MSI told me was that they don't certify or support OCZ ddr1066 on the K9N2 SLI Plat; which OCZ Techs told me, basically. B.S!  ...claiming they tested the Board themselves when it came out.   However OCZ doesn't even have the Board listed on their RAM Configurator on their website; which they claim is MSI's fault... and so on, and so on...
Anyway, OCZ is offering to swap my Reaper Set for a different Model set which they claim is more reliable on AMD processors.  Probably their Gold or SLI model set I'd guess; they don't even advertise on their website any difference in their sticks being "Intel Certified" or "AMD Certified" ... and so on.
Worse case scenario; if in the end whatever they give me still doesn't work, I'll EBAY it and try a set of those geIL Black Dragons.

  • K9N2 SLI platinum - another problem w/ Phenom II

I decided to upgrade my K9N2 SLI Platinum from Phenom 9850BE to Phenom II 940 3.0GHz.  I switched the CPUs but I didn't update the bios from 3.2 to 3.3.  When I powered up the bios 3.2 system with the Phenom II it posted and booted but then blue screened.  I restarted and went into the bios settings and checked the hardware monitor and it showed the CPU temperature at 80C!  I looked at the voltage and this bios was giving the Phenom II 1.8 volts.  I immediately shut down and felt the CPU sink and it was quite warm after only 60 seconds or so.  That wasn't a stock heatsink either - it was a CNPS9700 with AS5 - a lot of copper to heat up.
It seems that the 3.2 bios, if it didn't recognize the CPU, should not have set the VCORE to the maximum of 1.8 volts and continue to run.
Also, I replaced the Phenom II with a sempron to upgrade the bios and had a problem after successfully flashing 3.3.  I spent the weekend back and forth with MSI support and they sent a beta bios 3.3.3 that did work.  My problem with 3.3 was that the machine would freeze before POST with the Group 2 LED flashing green/red.
I'm waiting for a new CPU and wondering if I should also RMA the motherboard.  How come so many people seem to have flashed 3.3 with no problem but mine didn't work?

Thanks for all the information.  As I said, I have the MB working on a spare Sempron and I am waiting for a new 940, but here are some facts I'm still curious about:
    1. With a plain vanilla Sempron 3400+ and a plain vanilla one stick of slow memory my K9N2 SLI Platinum will not boot correctly with bios 3.3, even after resetting cmos, unplugging, etc.   MSI tech had to send me 3.3B3.  Anyone know why that would be.   Is there something wrong or different about my MB compared with everyone else that has 3.3?  What bug in 3.3 is fixed with 3.3B3?
The sempron should boot correctly. (3.3Beta3 is a pre-3.30)
    Quote
    2. I'm sorry but I think that with 3.2 or 3.3 or 3.3B3, before flashing, after flashing, with cmos reset, with cmos not reset, the bios should never put the red maximum 1.8 volts on a CPU it doesn't recognize.  I never set that parameter. It is a bios bug for it to switch up to 1.8 Vcore.  I had the 9850BE at Auto (about 1.1V I think).
You need 3.30 and after reset the cmos.

    3. "I doubt it burned the CPU"  Really? The max case temp for 940 is 60C.  Mine got to 80C.  That's not good, even if it does still work.  Fortunately I purchased from NE who will RMA it.
I doubt yours even got 80C as you where using the wrong BIOS...did you measure it with a digital temp-meter?
Did you burn your fingers on the heatsink?
It's not the first time a CPU temp is being read wrong in the BIOS.

    4. digit123abc said "i have the same board and 940BE, 3.3 sets the cpu voltage to 1.8volts even after bios reset and loading defaults"  So, when I get the new 940, with 3.3B3 am I really going to have to rush into the bios and change the 1.8Volts to auto before I burn that CPU also?  If so, that's a bad bios bug.
A BIOS default is Vcore at Auto, never seen anything else....not a BIOS-bug but he didn't reset the cmos after flashing.
And again 3.3Beta3 is older then 3.30 that is release version.
Same as with Windows7 Beta....thats prior to Windows7 Release.

  • MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum - Help

    Hi All
I'm new here and as I'm not sure where to look for help I thought posting a question might be best:-
I have 3 hot swap drive caddies only one of which is live.  The internal fan became noisy so I simply swapped the connections (SATA, Power, HDD LED) for one of the unused caddies.
I now cannot boot although I clearly have power and the 4/8 boot LED's immediately show 2 green 2 red.  According to my book it says that means ‘Initialising Hard Drive Controller' – that’s as far as it get's.  I'm not getting anything on screen.
I did briefly reconnect the old Caddy but that made no difference.  I have looked to see if I've accidentally disconnected something but thus far nothing appears to be wrong.
Whilst I built my machine there are some things I can't always work out so if anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.
    System Info:-
    Gigabyte Aurora Case
    MSI  K9N2 SLI Platinum
AMD 9850 Quadcore 64bit Black Series
2 x Nvidia GT9800 Graphics (Ones out for now)
    8 Gb RAM
OS Windows 7 64 Ultimate (Demountable Drive 250Gb Partitioned)
    Plus 1 x 759Gb & 1 x 1Tb internal HDD partitioned.

I have solved the problem myself!!
For anybody that it may help:-
I had an old IDE CDR which I disconnected ages ago BUT the IDE cable was still connected to the mainboard without issue.  The LED error code (2 Green 2 Red) states - ' Initialising Hard Drive Controller - This will initialise IDE Drive and controller'.
For reasons that make no sense I removed the IDE Cable....and the machine booted without issue.  This cable as I said was not in use and had caused no issues before.
By the way 'BAS' - If you read my post properly you may notice clues... like 'I clearly have power and the 4/8 boot LED's immediately show 2 green 2 red'...unless of course you use Steam or Gas  :(
