  • Lack of Nvidia extension support under macosx

I'd like to play City of Heroes under macosx using Crossover Games.
I can do so fine on my macbook pro because it has a ati graphics card.
However on my tower I have a nvidia graphics card and the game will not load.
When I reported it to Crossover Games, I got the following email:
    From Stefan Dösinger <[email protected]>
date Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:39 AM
    subject CrossOver Games Mac Trial
It says "Your card does not support GLNV_vertexprogram" when I launch CohUpdater.exe .
That's because GLNV_vertexprogram(a nvidia specific opengl extension) isn't supported on MacOS. It is strictly speaking a bug in CoH. This extension isn't garanted to be there, even if you have an Nvidia card. An application must not depend on it.
The thing is that this extension happens to be supported by all Nvidia drivers on Windows and Linux, but MacOS uses different drivers which don't support it. So the game's broken assumption that Nvidia->GLNV_vertexprogram support doesn't hold true on Macs.
I can understand that this causes troubles for you. I can file a bug in Apple's bugtracker requesting support for this extension, but its likely that they'll just tell me that software can't depend on this extension.

Not really sure what type of response you're expecting here. Youv'e been told that the drivers don't support it, and there's really nothing your or anyone else here can do about it but hope for future support.

  • Environment variables from ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist not read?

    Hello,
I repost this from "Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard > Account and Login" since it was advised to me overthere. Sorry if your already read this one before.
I have a problem defining environment variables that should be visible to all my user processes, not only Terminal. According to the Apple documentation, I need to create a file ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist and define my variables in there.
Below you can see the exact paths and file name, together with the contents of the plist file:
    <pre>
    /Users/ringods/.MacOSX
    AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ ls -l
    total 8
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 ringods staff 313 Sep 29 15:35 environment.plist
    AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ cat environment.plist
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>ANT_HOME</key>
    <string>/opt/local/share/java/apache-ant</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    </pre>
I then tried a logout/login sequence, but no ANT_HOME environment variable was defined. Even after completely rebooting, the environment variable was still not defined. I checked in a Terminal window using any of the following 3 commands:
    <pre>
    env
    export
    set
    </pre>
This is on a MacBook Pro running 10.5.5. Am I missing something here? Does anyone know how to resolve this?
    Ringo

I'm currently experiencing the same issue.
I find however, if I take out the underscore from the name it works. At least the times I've tried.
There is a post about using launchd.conf for configuring environment variables, but I couldn't get that to work either.

  • Why does mail sent using the MacOSX mail client not show up in my sent folder when I access my Gmail account in a browser?

I've recently started using my first Mac, and I hooked my work email (Forwarded to Google Mail) and my personal email (Gmail) into the MacOSX mail client. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, until I noticed that sent mail from my work email through the MacOSX Mail client is not showing up in my sent box on any other clients. Sent mail does show up in my personal email in Gmail, though.
Can anyone help me understand why mail sent from the MacOSX Mail client doesn't end up in the sent folder of my work Gmail account? I suspect it has something to do with the forwarding-to-Google process -- a sort of "too many cooks in the kitchen" situation. Has anyone heard of this problem before? What should I try?

I've been noticing that too.  Just told me there were 6 outgoing messages, even though I did not create any new messages.
One hypothesis is that it's generating those messages when a rule moves an email from one folder to another.
Can someone at Apple confirm this?

  • How to triple boot (MacOSX / Win7 / Linux) a MacBook Pro (Retina, late 2013) with Refind

ok it's not a question, it's an howto.
You do it at your own risk. No failure reported so far, but I'm not responsible for anything.
If you try to multiboot your MacBook Pro (MBP hereafter) you may face a new complexity. With on partition, Bootcamp does a pretty amazing job installing windows. But when you want to partition your disk in your own way, Bootcamp may fail to install windows and another third OS. You may also want to have a share partition between your OSes, hence have multiple partitions. Most of this tuto should also work for Windows 8 and for other Macbooks.
Problem 1 : Bootcamp does it with one partition that it divides in two and allow to setup Win7. Not all time though since some user reportidely have problems to get USB 3 support and the keyboard and mouse are non working during the install / setup phase.
Problem 2 : Windows 7 is not able to install itself to a GPT partition and needs an Hybrid MBR. Bootcamp does this, but just for a Dual OS setup. So to make the magic happen in a multi OS environment, you'll have to do want bootcamp does, manually.
Step 1 : Download the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant from Apple and flash it to a USB stick. (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433)
Step 2 : Reboot, holding the option key (aka CMD, left of spacebar) down, to trigger the boot menu options. Start the usb drive with OS X recovery and enter the partition tool. Create 3 to 4 partitions, suiting your tastes. Just put windows partition first and I recommend to put the partition sharing data across OSes second, MacOS 3rd and Linux Last for example. MacOS and Linux are fine with pretty much every setup, Windows need the 1° usable partition.
Step 3 : Migrate your Macos using the same tool (google it for details) or Reinstall MacOS from the recovery partition. (more about migration here, but there are better tuto on this)
Step 4 : Start your MacOS and create a bootcamp USB stick with the bootcamp tool. You need an ISO from Win7 (or Win 8) and a drive of at least 4 GB. Bootcamp will most likely complain about the fact that it will not be able to install 7 due to the fact that you don't have only one partition, ignore and proceed to the Bootcamp USB stick setup.
Step 5 : Adding the USB3 support to your Win7 installation. Plug your newly created Win7 USB stick to a computer running Windows. In the sources directory, copy the boot.vim on your disk drive and add the drivers that Bootcamp added to your USB stick, in the $WinPEDriver$ directory and follow these instructions to add them to your boot.vim image. Follow carefully every step, it does works. Add the drivers you feel like, commit and copy back your boot.vim image, patched, to your USB stick, in the sources directory.
Step 6 : In your MacOSX, install the GPT fdisk partition tool. You just have to unzip the archive. Win7 is unable to install to a GPT disk, so you will have to create a (dirty) Hybrid MBR. From a terminal, launch GPT fdisk. Carefull here, the Win7 is most likely not the 1st but the 2nd or 3rd because there is an UEFI partition before. Just check before adding them if in doubt, by striking p. Then key in r then h then the number of the partitions you want to add to this hybrid MBR (the Win7 & the Shared one). Accept the type 07 for this partition and type y, n & finally w. (more details here for the fans)
Step 7 : Reboot, keep the CMD key down to trigger the boot option menu. Reboot on the USB stick, install Win7. If it doesn't understand the partition made for it, format it, if needed, from the 7 installer, delete and recreate it.
Step 8 : Install your favorite Linux distro with a USB stick generator. (see here & here). No complex part, except that Grub will most likely scratch your nice Hybrid MBR, rendering Win7 inaccessible. No problem, reboot in MacOS and redo step 6, this will revive your win7.
Step 9 : It's cosmetic but keeping CMD key down to boot is not so practical. ReFind does it just great. Setup is super easy, just kick install.sh from a shell in MacOS. Fine tune decoration and some stuffs later on from the config file.
Step 10 (optionnal) : You want it all, without switching between OSes? Having Windows app running within MacOS is easy, with most native hardware acceleration preserved, using Parallels desktop. It also works with a "simple" Bootcamp Windows setup.
Enjoy your mighty triple boot MBP.

Just ordered a Retina MacBook Pro11,2 (mid-2014 15", 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OSX 10.9.4 Pre-installed - Build 13E28)  and have the exact same issue.  The first thing I did when i booted it for the first time was enable FileValut2 and encrypt the disk.  Though I failed to notice this behavior prior to encrypting the disk, the stuttering/lag happens without fail every time I have logged in from a cold boot, locked screen or sleep. Additionally I have noticed the same stuttering behavior when switching tabs on various built-in OSX applications such as the tabs on the About This Mac > More Info.... (System Information) dialog for example, and similarly other dialogs that experience this behavior of resizing when switching tabs. I was running no other software than About This Mac > More Info ... (System Information) and OSX 10.9.4 itself.  The issue happens without fail with and without a USB mouse plugged in.
I am really glad to have found this thread and with such recent posts.  I'd love to find out that this is just a software bug that will be fixed when OSX 10.10 "Yosemite" is released.  If not, I hope the cause of this bug is determined soon so I can still exchange or have it repaired.
Migflono and Matthew, would you be able to post your hardware specs for comparison?

  • Cannot invite attendees to iCal event in iCal 5.0 on new MacOSX lion?

    Hi there,
Background: I have two gmail calendars snyced with the new iCal 5.0 on MacOsx Lion.
Problem: When creating an event, I cannot add anybody to the event. The attendee field is just nonexistant. If I drag and drop a business card into iCal a new event is created with the person listed as attendee, but I cannot edit this event.
Cry for help: This is weird - I need this to work. With those basics, there is no excuse for iCal . I cannot find anything relevant on the web. Did anybody experience something similar?
    Thanks for your support,
    B

Got a solutions for you that worked for me because I have the same annoying problem.
    1. sign in to iclould on the website www.icloud.com/
    2. Go to your calendar
    3. You'll noticed some extra benefits of creating invents here instead of iCal app.  You can actually invite attendees!!  Also, when selecting a day for your event, it pops up a calendar and you just click on the day you want.  On iCal you have to manually type in the date numbers.
    Hope this was helpful.

  • Unable to install update 10.1.12 over 10.1.10 on MacOSX 10.9.5, error 1301 , even using root user as suggested

Acrobat X Pro 10.1.10 has some problems since I installed MacOSX Mavericks (it refused to use a Gemalto certificat for signatures). I tried to upgrade it to 10.1.12. But was update is impossible to install (error 1301). I re-installed Acrobat Pro, as suggested. It did'nt fix the problem.  Then I tried to update with root user permissions (as also suggested by Adobe).  Still unsuccesfull, ever the same 1301 error.

This seems like a corrupt image.
Try to download this again and doublecheck that you are selecting the correct OS.
Otherwise ask Oracle to ship the DVD's/CD's.

  • HP LaserJet 1020 drivers for MacOSX Lion 10.7

    Hi,
I'm trying to add LaserJet 1020 to MacOSX 10.7 (Lion).
According to this page this printer is supported by Apple and its driver comes with OS. But when I'm adding the printer in the "Print & Scan" it says that the driver for this printer is NOT available from Apple.
Does anybody know how to use this printer on MacOSX?
    Thanks,
    Alexander
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The insistence on HP's part that the 1020 was never supported on Mac is utter poppycock. The Laserjet 1020 was advertised and sold as being Mac compatible. I bought mine from an authorized Mac dealer, and still have the original box with the "Mac Compatible" sticker on it. I've been running the 1020 with my iMac G5 for 5+ years and never had any support problems until I bought an OS X Lion iMac this past week. The refusal to support this product is nothing more than a money grab to force users to buy new equipment, despite owning an otherwise fully functional printer.
Luckily, you can run the 1020 on Lion using the 1022 driver. Follow the instructions at the top of the following link, and read the extra step for Lion in comment #63. Use the 1.3 1022 printer driver, and you should have no trouble getting your printer to work.

  • [SOLVED]How do I install sqldeveloper-3.2.20.09.87-macosx on Mac OSX 10.7.5

    Hi,
SOLVED! Whit the right unarchiver (arkivverktyg.app) it was a walk in the park.
I unpacked the file sqldeveloper-3.2.20.09.87-macosx.gz and got a slightly bigger file sqldeveloper-3.2.20.09.87-macosx with no dmg file extension, and of course if I double click it as the instruction tells me it can´t find any asociated program to start it with.
I could not find anything in this forum how I should continue. Probably it is very simple if you are a Oracle type of person..
My set up: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
    java version "1.6.0_37"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode)
I will try with the latest Java 2013 update 002 if it helps.

  • Should I upgrade my 2008 MacBook 5,1 from macosx 10.6.8 to 10.9.1

I have an old 13" macbook 5,1 (first aluminium unibody model from 2008) with 4 GB of RAM and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
Originally it shipped with Leopard (macosx 10.5), and I upgraded to Snow Leopard (macosx 10.6.8) in order to keep downloading security updates and for compatibility with newer 64 bit applications that only run on 10.6 and later OSs.
However, concerned by possible performance penalties I did not switch to Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8).
Now the reviews about Mavericks make me think it might be a good idea to upgrade.
The new features and eye-candy of the new version are of no importance to me.
However the upgrade may reportedly improve system performance, at least w.r.t. Lion and Mountain Lion on relatively new hardware.
What about older, barely acceptable hardware.
    My question is:
    * is there a good reason for upgrading my old hardware to mavericks? My priorities are:
      - system performance
      - security updates
      - compatibility with security updates of installed applications
    * my hardware is barely acceptable for an upgrade: is the upgrade likely to improve the system performance or the opposite?
    * until now I have never felt the need to upgrade: all applications I use still work fine with 10.6, with updates still supporting 10.6
    * however if security updates of the system or installed applications start dropping 10.6 I may be forced to switch to mavericks. Is this likely to happen anytime soon?
    Thank you for your help!
    best regards,
    uxl2

If my experience with a similarly aged computer is any indicator, you'll notice an immediately speed hit once you've upgraded to Mavericks. Each OS X update tends to be more memory hungry than the previous and my 2007 iMac wasn't happy with Lion until I upgraded the RAM and at that point Lion performance roughly matched Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion and then Mavericks shaved some speed off again. Mavericks on the 2007 iMac was okay for the most part but switching between applications was slow as was the fileselector.
My 2009 MBP saw similar slowdowns with Lion but I was above to upgrade it to 8GB which made a big difference. (My iMac was limited to 6GB) but I still saw a significant speed hit with Mt Lion when I tried to run multiple memory intensive applications. Seeing how my wife's MacBook Air dealt with Mt Lion with only 4GB I decided to install an SSD in the MBP and wow what a difference. Tried it with the iMac using a FireWire800 enclosure and saw similar improvement.
So to boil it down to one sentence, you are going to see a significant speed hit with only 4GB but if you can afford to upgrade your drive to an SSD you'll be amazed at how well that computer can run.

  • SAPRFC / PHP 5.3.0 / MacOSX Snow Leopard

<pre>(seems message parsing is not working..) Hello gurus !
I've read with a great interrest almost all posts on this forum, and I must say it helped me a lot sorting
out a nearly functional solution for installing SAPRFC PHP extension on a MacOSX Snow Leopard system.
It seems i'm just having a problem with the RFCSDK from SAP not being of the appropriate architecture.
Let me describe my installation process (maybe it can help other people willing to install SAPRFC on
    Macintosh plateform equally !)
    1. Installation of Macintosh developpement tools (Xcode)
First step was to install XCode Package, from http://developer.apple.com/tools/xcode/ it's a 650Mb
disk-image, that once installed is 2.5Gb on harddrive. This provided me with all php headers that I
    needed for the next steps.
I made sure my Apache/PHP was functionnal on the Macintosh, this page helped me :
    http://www.mac4ever.com/articles/creation/1153/php_mysql_sous_snow_leopard_et_xdebug_eclipse/ (it's in french)
    2. Download of RFCSDK from SAP
I was not totally sure which version to install on my system since no "MacOsX version", so I picked
the "Linux on x86_64 64bit" package.
    3. Extracting files from the SAR archive
As the binary of SAPCAR was not willing to execute properly, I downloaded a Windows version and
extracted my files on a Windows system.
    4. Installing RFCSDK files on the system
    I created a folder "sap" in folder "/usr" :
    $> sudo mkdir /usr/sap
I created a folder "rfcsdk" in folder "/usr/sap"
    $> sudo mkdir /usr/sap/rfcsdk
I copied all files i extracted from the SAR archive into the "/usr/sap/rfcsdk folder" :
    $> sudo cp -R ~/Desktop/Linux\ on\ x86_64\ 64bit/ /usr/sap/rfcsdk/*
After this in "/usr/sap/rfcsdk" i have now : 4 folders : bin, include, lib and text
I changed access rights for all the files in sap directory:
    $> sudo chmod -R 755 /usr/sap
    5. Compiling SAPRFC extension for PHP
    I downloaded SAPRFC 1.4.1 from http://saprfc.sourceforge.net/
    I created a folder module under "/usr/sap" :
    $> sudo mkdir "/usr/sap/module"
I unpacked the files from the saprfc-1.4.1.tar.gz archive into "/usr/sap/module/"
I ran phpize while in folder "/usr/sap/module/"
    $> cd /usr/sap/module
    $> sudo phpize
    Configuring for:
    PHP Api Version:         20090626
    Zend Module Api No:      20090626
    Zend Extension Api No:   220090626
(I made sure the phpize which was called was the one corresponding to the php version i was
running with apache, "locate phpize" helped me to sort out if there was serveral phpize that could
    potentially be executed)
I ran then the configuration script

       - add LIBDIR to the `DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable

    I continued anyway :

; Be sure to appropriately set the extension_dir directive.
    ;extension=php_bz2.dll
    ;extension=php_curl.dll
I saved my php.ini file forcing write of the read only file (Esc, ":wq!", enter)
    7. Testing the installation
I restarted my apache server, and checked /var/log/apache2/error_log; at this time no
    error shows here yet.
I put the saprfc_test.php file in my Sites/ folder to test it with http://localhost// and the page
just load fine, and the php script seems to not fail on the test : if (! extension_loaded ("saprfc")),
so.. normally the extension is loaded by php.
After viewing the saprfc_test.php page, some errors appears in the /var/log/apache2/error_log :
dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found: _RfcGetAllLibVersions

    8. Trying to find out the issue
I wanted to run LDD tool on saprfc.so to find out if the linking was correctly done with the library
"/usr/sap/rfcsdk/lib/librfccm.so" but it appears that ldd is not available on MacOSX and Apple
    recommand using "otool -L" instead.
    Here we go :
    *$> cd /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626
    *$> otool -L saprfc.so"
    saprfc.so:
         /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 125.0.0)
Not very "verbose".. i tried the otool -l (minus L) to view any better info :
    *$> otool -l saprfc.so"
    saprfc.so:

Thank you for reading all this, now, maybe you if already managed to have a MacOSX SAPRFC

just work on a Mac OSX system.. Thanks for your kind advices

Hey that is one crazy message Lemmus. If you want people to respond a little human parsing and indenting maybe required.
    I have one thought.
What version on SAP are you connecting to? If it is ECC6 or a netweaver system I would get hold of the sapnwrfc library. (Google is your friend)
It is designed to work with the new netweaver rfc interface.

  • Acrobat Pro 9.3.1 MacOSX & XP Not the Same, Having YouTube Embedd Issues

    Hello Everyone,
I am currently working on a project that requires cross platform MacOSX and PC XP users to see included Video From the Web from sources such as YouTube and Audio Sites embedded into a PDF.
The content needs to appear the same in both platforms. The content must be a refference file to play within the PDF, video can not be copied and converted to another format and be re-embedded. The content must remain in the format housed on it's local server. *
Using a technique I found on several Acrobat forums you can create an HTML page with the Embed Tags from YouTube then use Windows XP and Acrobat Pro 9.3.1 to convert it to a PDF. (I have VMware with XP and a Trial Of Acrobat Pro 9.3.1)
On the PC you can then open the PDF and see the video play, so on the PC all is good. You can even copy and paste the video between other PC based PDF documents but none of the content is visible or playable within the MacOSX environments (10.5.8 or 10.6.2 with Acrobat 9.3.1 Pro). All You Get is blank page, the content is there if you move your mouse around it will change to an arrow and you can select it but it never connects to load the content. Sometimes it shows it is buffering to download but nothing happens. There is a Security menu that loads asking if you want to allow the connection and I say yes but it does nothing.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
A person in one of the forums sent me a file Hulu Video Embedded into a PDF created on an Windows XP service pack 3 system with a trial of Acrobat pro 9.3.1., the file was a acrobat v.1.7 version accorinding to the properties manager and the unique this was it played fine on the Mac. Now when I try and duplicate this it fails to work, I have no idea why now. Any ideas?
I am currently designing a project in Indesign and need to place the Multimedia content within the design for Online Distribution.
Note that in Acrobat Pro 9.3.1 the Multimedia components do not allow for embedding the content in a Flash Element or Video Element on the PDF. It will refuse to recognize that format. I have copied the YouTube Embed Tags in the video and flash multimedia componetns with ZERO success, it always states that it is an unknown format. Placing Audio into the PDF works fine though. The only issue is that player looks strange till you select it the first time. (would like to resolve that as well)
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
Note: PC Xp Software fully updated to latest builds, Acrobat 9.3.1 on Both MacOSX and XP Systems, Both MacOSX & XP have latest versions of Flash Player.
    Regards,
    Robert
I am going to attach the file that was made for me showcasing that the video works on a Mac.
    The file is called: ByBrianForRobertWorksinMacOSX
The next file I made on my Windows Xp Vmware with a trial of Acrobat Pro 9.3.1 - When I load it on the PC it works fine, but in the Mac it just states its buffering. The video is in pdf on the upper left corner under the text.

    Solution: install all fonts
When the user installs Acrobat, they must use the Custom installation option and  select

Just to add to BDAqua's excellent advice:
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__PPC
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
