Kanex ATV Pro VGA to S-Video?

Anybody using a Kanex ATV Pro with an Apple TV, know if a simple VGA to S-Video, or composite cable will allow it to be used with an older CRT Television?

Rudegar, you may not have seen this:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H9139VC/A/kanex-atv-pro-airplay-mirroring-for- vga-projector-cable?
We normally say that converters are a bad idea but if Apple sell this it is presumably supported.
I've got an old VGA projector and am tempted to get one.

bit of a shame as this cable/convertor was recommended on these boards by another user and was definately not cheap
I may have recommended this based on my own experience with it and the fact that it is designed for AppleTV specifically and is actually sold by Apple.
Have you contacted Kanex support to query what the issue might be?
Might be worth trying to cycle display resolutions with the remote, see black screen recovery:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3176
I have not used mine for a few months as I got a new HDMI equipped projector - it is not impossible that Apple have scuppered functionality with a software update though.
If you cannot get it to work can you return it to the vendor?  I would not have recommended this device if Apple weren't selling it for this very purpose - even if a software update prevented protected content playback it should not stop you using Airplay of non-protected material.
My suspicion would be some kind of incompatibility when the device is working out what resolutions the projector supports.  It could even be a faulty Kanex adapter.

  • Kanex ATV Pro experience

Has anyone else had the experience of video dropping from using the Kanex ATV Pro with Apple TV?
I just picked one up at the Apple Online store. The Kanex ATV Pro (http://www.kanexlive.com/atvpro) is a 3rd party dongle that plugs into the hdmi port of the Apple TV and splits the audio onto a female 1/8 and the video to VGA (for then connecting to a projector). (You see, I own a projector, but not a flat screen TV or other HDMI-input display).
Anyway, things were working well for the first couple days but now I get these random drops of the video feed from the AppleTV. The projector goes blue screen for 2 seconds then the feed is back. Completely random too. Sometimes as often as 30 seconds. Sometimes as long as 3 minutes. Makes the AppleTV completely unusable.
So my question: is the problem the Kanex or the Apple TV? I have reinstalled (restored to factory settings) the OS on my ATV but that didn't help
I will continue to fiddle with things to see if I can get stable performance again.
    thanks

Our projectors are old school and ceiling mounted... even if they had HD inputs, there would be no convenient way to get to them, plus I would be using OTHER folks' projectors on the road with no control over their inputs.
IF I do get near a projector that HAS HD inputs, I would still need an adapter correct? Presumably one from the docking port that terminates with hdml...
SO should I spend the extra money on the ATV Pro?

  • Kanex ATV Pro + Apple TV + Sony Bravia KLV-S40A10

I purchased a Kanex ATV Pro to provide VGA input from my Apple TV to my Sony Bravia KLV-S40A10 as my model does not have HDMI input. I have checked the VGA input on the TV with a laptop which works correctly however when the Kanex ATV Pro is used the TV shows an out of range error, could anyone provide guidance with this problem please.

This is a user to user forum - not many of us have the Kanex device - I've been meaning to order one.
You may get an answer but I still think Kanex would know best.

  • ATV peer-to-peer from MBP w/Kanex ATV adaptor

Hello.I am a H.S. teacher. I wish to use an ATV, peer-to-peer w/ a MBP. Cannot use school network. LED uses vga so would use Kanex ATV pro hdmi to vga adaptor. 720i is OK for my purposes. Can this be accomplished. Any suggestions/comments greatly apprecitated.

iPad 3rd generation doesn't support Peer-to-Peer Airplay. Apple quietly said it was for iOS devices introduced in LATE 2012. Like for Handoff; certain devices with the latest Wi-Fi specifications can get this feature. The iPad 3 was introduced in EARLY 2012. I tried, but it didn't work. Here is what I found in the Apple TV Section.
AirPlay requires an Apple TV (2nd generation or later) with an iOS device running iOS 4.3 or later or a Mac with iTunes 10.2 or later. Some features require the latest software.
Peer-to-peer AirPlay requires a Mac (2012 or later) with OS X Yosemite or an iOS device (late 2012 or later) with iOS 8; and an Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with Apple TV software 7.0 or later.
AirPlay Mirroring is available with iPhone 4s or later; iPad 2 or later; iPad mini; iPod touch (5th generation); and iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer), and Mac Pro (Late 2013) with OS X Mountain Lion or later.
Dual-screen capability is available with iPhone 4s or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad mini, and iPod touch (5th generation).

  • Mac Pro and DVI to Video Adapter

I just received a new Mac Pro with a GeForce 7300 card and was planning to use it in part to display video on a set of TV monitors using the Apple DVI to Video Adapter. Try as I might I have not been able to get the computer to recognize a TV regardless of the DVI port and using both S-Video and RCA. I now see that in Apple's store the converter is classified as Requiring a "MacBook Pro, Mac mini or Power Mac G5 with DVI port". Not sure if there's any way around this. The adapter has worked fine in the past with both a Mac Mini and a G5 tower. If anyone knows a possible workaround or if an updated adapter is forthcoming I would appreciate the information.

Just to be clear here: There is no way to get S-Video
output from my $~2700 machine (with the stock
7300gt)? Not even with (maybe forthcoming) additional
adapters? This is pretty embarrassing. Actually I'm
    sorta angry.
Are there any other options like DVI->VGA->S-Video
maybe? I surely won't dump $150 into the trash just
to have that (supposedly) noisy beast of a x1900
screaming around here. Just for S-Video. This is
    silly.
There are VGA to S-Video converters but they cost more than the Apple adapter. Here is one. Probable a bit fancier than you want. There are others.
    <http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/PC-TVvideoadapter.html>
The Apple adapter is cheap because all the work is being done in the video card when it detects the adapter. The video card outputs the S-Video brightness and color, and the composite video on the DVI pins that would normally be used for analog red, green, and blue, using the A/D converters normally used for a CRT. The adapter just sends the signals to different connectors. The adapter won't do anything with a card that wasn't designed to output TV video.

  • Options for VGA to S video/ composite video over Mini displayport

I have a mid 2009 13" macbook pro that i want to connect to a standard def tv with s video and composite inputs. I already own the mini displaport to VGA adapter. I have found two adapters on amazon that convert VGA to s/composite video. one is $4 and is just a cable. The other is a $40 box with vga input and video output. my question is, do i need to shell out for the expensive one or will the cheap cable do just fine? i have heard NTSC out a lot while poking around. does my computer have that?

Hello, I am first time forums user and a new mac owner.
What I am having trouble with is a very similar thing but I have a brand new macbook pro 17 so I am pretty sure my connector is slightly different. I found this...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9319G/A
This seems to be a connector which comes out of the mini-dvi port and has a connector for rca/svideo. I have a mini-dvi to vga that I bought with the mac and then I have an old vga to rca/s-video connector cable like the cheap option the original poster gave.
My mac responds as it should but the tv signal is totally screwed up. I also tried hooking it to a projector using rca and that said no signal. The mini-dvi port to vga works but I am not 100% on the vgs to rca connector I haven't used it in so long. It is going to be a pain for me to test it though.
Should this work? DO I need to mess around with refresh rates?
    Thanks

  • Mini-VGA to S-video Adapter / Getting Original Display Setting Back

I purchased the Mini VGA to S-Video Adapter. Works good with my HD Television. But no I cant get my original Display settings back. I dont know exactly what the setting was but it had more screen space. Please Help, Ryan

So you have a good picture on your TV but not your mac?
Open the display pane of system preferences, leave the settings that come up under VGA Adapter (or whatever it calls itself) But for the iMac settings, colour should be millions, and then just go through the different resolutions until you find one that you like.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Poor resolution from mini-vga to s-video adapter

I recently bought a digital projector to watch movies on at home, and am using my 14"iBook as the video source. It works great when using a vga cable. However, i want to run the cables up through the ceiling and down through the wall to keep them out of sight. I had read that S-video was supposed to be a fairly high resolution method of transmitting the signal, and is also a lot slimmer than vga (and thus easier to snake through the walls.) So I bought a mini vga to s-video/ video adapter and when I hook it up to the projector, the image quality is very poor. Is there a setting that needs to be changed on my iBook to get it to display properly, or something else that I'm missing? I bought the adapter used on ebay, so I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem without buying another adapter only to find out that it still doesn't work. Also, I am running screen spanning doctor, but even if I change to mirror mode, it still looks bad.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, John. That was my suspicion. Guess I'll have to drill giant holes to be able to run the VGA cable. Unless of course I could figure out how to remove/re-attach the connector end. Anyone know if this is possible? Or, is it possible to find a 15' long mini vga? It seems that there ought to be someone out there who could make custom cables for unique situations and needs like mine. What I really need is a box that runs off my ibook that has multiple display outputs so that i don't have to pull cords every time I want to switch from my 22" widescreen to my projector.

  • Satellite P300-18M - VGA to S-Video / RCA cable - No Picture on TV

    Hi,
First of all, I am trying to use my other laptop (Dell Lattitude D630) I with my TV, however, this other laptop only has a VGA output.
So I bought a VGA to S-Video and RCA adapter from e-Bay: [Picture|http://members.lycos.co.uk/jtfearnley/Hosting/Images/RCA%20To%20S-Video%20RCA.jpg]
However, this does not work, the laptop in question does have "TV Out through VGA", so it should work according to various websites, and the seller....
However, I then tried to test it with my Satellite P300-18M, and it does not work with this either, I have tried both the composite (yellow port) and S-video port, in three different TV's, and there is no picture.
I have tried changing the settings in the ATI Catalyst Controll Centre, eg, forcing TV detection, and it detects the TV, however there is no picture on the TV, only grey lines.
If I cange the resoution and Refresh rate I can sort of get an image: [TV Picture|http://members.lycos.co.uk/jtfearnley/Hosting/Images/TV.jpg]
But this is the best thing.
In the past I have used all three television sets with my P300 using direct S-Video, so I do not understand why it will not work with this adapter.
Also, I know that this isn't a Dell forum, but I am not a member there, and this question is also concerning my Toshiba notebook, as it would be useful to be able to use the adapter for RCA instead of S-Video.
    Thanks

    Hi
From my knowledge the VGA port can be used only in connection with an external monitor/LCD but not with the TV.
The point is that the common PAL TV (not LCD or plasma) supports a max resolution of 720 X 576px at 50Hz (NTSC 720 X 480 at 60Hz).
As far as I know only the s-video port provides such resolution.
The VGA port provides higher resolutions which are supprted by most external monitors.
However, I never connected the notebook to TV via VGA port so I can provide only some assumptions.
Of course it could be possible that the VGA to S-Video and RCA adapter is not fully compatible.
I read on different pages that cheap no-name adapters dont work as it should.

  • [T420] VGA to S-video or composite video

I want to connect a T420 to an older TV.  Can I use this VGA to s-video/composite adapter?  The website says:
"Your  video card MUST be able to support s-Video or Composite out through it's VGA port. This is known as a TV out function. If you don't know if your video card can do this, then call the card manufacturer and ask them "Does my video card support S-Video or Composite Video out through its VGA port?""
So, does the video card in the T420 (Intel HD 3000) support S-Video or Composite Video out (more importantly composite video) through its VGA port?

    Hi biznatch!
The T420 does not support s-Video or Composite out through it's VGA port. You need an active VGA converter box.
    Hope this helps!

  • VGA to S-video or composite video adapter

I need some way to get the video output of my computer to my T.V. The computer has no S-video or anything other outputs for video besides the VGA one. And I don't have a T.V. with VGA input. Has anyone ever seen an adapter for something like this? I know I can get a splitter for the VGA so I can keep my monitor plugged in at the same time, but I need something to convert the VGA for the T.V.

    Welcome, jacob1982!
Could you please post which TV model or which inputs
the TV does have?  I ask this because if
you have HDMI input on the TV then you just need a
    cable and a converter
adapter.  You can split VGA output by
    using this VGA
Splitter. I looked on bestbuy.com for a VGA to S-Video adapter I had once
purchased but it appears we may not have them anymore? You can also try going
into your local store for assistance (hint: these adapters may be found in the
    TV area).
