Kaspersky... I thought it was suppose to be better than Norton

Question

     I purchased an HP G62-465DX Notebook PC last Sunday (04/03/11) & it came with a six month subscription of Kaspersky Lab. I installed the antivirus software before I did anything else as instructed, but now after only turning my computer on three times there's an infected message under the Kaspersky detected threats tab. Does that mean my computer is infected?

     If indeed this message means that my laptop is infected, why did this happen? I installed Kaspersky before I even used the computer, why was I not protected? On another note, the only websites I have gone to have been MSN (homepage), AOL & GMAIL (personal email), Bank of America, & Best Buy. Where did I pick up the virus? I’m so confused. I was told that Norton wouldn't last one round with Kaspersky on a good day, so how did I end up with a virus before I really even started using my new laptop?
     Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated; to say I am disappointed that my brand new computer is already “sick” would be a major understatement!
