KB - Holding the horizontal pos of an image whilst moving it vertically

...is the best way I can describe this.
Basically, in iMovie 06, you could hold the position of an image when you were setting it's Ken Burns positions - ie if you held down the shift key whilst moving it vertically, it would hold it's horizontal position.
As I haven't figured out how to set a photo slideshow to fit to the music doing a slideshow in iMovie 08, I'm looking at doing one in iPhoto. But now I can't seem to figure out how to hold a slide in position using the method described above.
iLife is so great in so many ways, but it's starting to seem a little annoying if different apps between them do stuff, but none seem to quite provide everything!

Iain:
Why don't you continue using iMovie 6? Apple has made it available for those who've upgraded to iLife 08 but like the greater editing capability of the previous version. You can download it here:iMovie HD 6.
You might look at Photo to Movie or PhotoPresenter as an alternative slideshow application. Photo to Movie has great control of the KB effect, titles, etc. PhotoPresenter, IMO, is one of the best. It does have the KB effect but it's not user set. But it does have over 25 themes which are outstanding. There are but two of them Apple TV Intro - Reflection theme.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I am trying to organize thousands of old images in aperture.  Aperture dates them all in 2008, when I started this project.  When I change the date in aperture some of them hold the modified date and some revert to 2008.  Any ideas?

I just tried a test library, re-imported fresh images from a hard drive, and the date changes still revert.
So neither your external drive nor your Aperture library are to blame.
What do you mean test in a different user acct?  Would it be a good idea to uninstall and re-download aperture 3?
    Appreciate all your help.
I meant the trouble shooting procedure described here:  Isolating an issue by using another user account
To test, if some settings in your user account are faulty or preferences files corrupted, it helps to create a new user account from the "Users&Groups" System preferences. With a brand new user account you can see, if something in your current account is causing this.
Should you see, that Aperture is not even working from a new and clean account, I'd reinstall Aperture, and if need be the Operating system.  Are you using any plug-ins?

  • My iPad no longer switches screen when i go from holding it horizontal to vertical.  How can I change it back in settings to have the screen look the way I am holding the iPad

My screen no longer moves with the way I'm holding the iPad.  For example if I'm holding it horizontal the screen is vertical.  Up unitl now the screen has always moved with the way I was holding the ipad.  Is there something in Settings I can do to get this back?

If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it, double tap the home button and swipe to the right and look for the lock icon all the way to the left. (IOS 6). For iOS 7, swipe up from the bottom to get to the control center and look for the lock icon in the top row on the right.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the button

  • Zoom and pan with Ken Burns and then stop and hold the image

    Hi all,
I'd like to zoom and pan on a photo with Ken Burns and then stop at the "end" -cropping and hold the image there on my project for a few seconds. Is this possible?

    I found a new solution.
I select the ready "Ken Burnsed" photoclip and ctrl-click and choose copy, and then paste the exactly same kind of clip right behind the original. Then i go to the 'cropping, ken burns and rotation'- window, make shure that the start box is on the same crop as the ending of the original clip ( you can switch between start and end crops from the arrow thingy in the corner of the box) , and click crop. There I have the righty cropped stillframe right behind of the original.
I don't know if this is the right method, but it works thanks for everyone for helping, and if you find a better way, please post. I have this thread subscribed.

    Menu>File>Vault
Creating what Ap[erture calls a 'Vault' seems like the easiest way to do it.
Here is the complete Help section on backing up your library.
    QUOTE:
As you begin working with Aperture, it’s important to perform regular backups of your photos. Using the Aperture backup system, you can create backups and update them whenever you wish. Aperture tracks your backups and indicates how up to date your most recent backup is. In the rare event of equipment failure or an unforeseen catastrophe such as a fire or weather-related damage, you can easily restore the entire Aperture library onto your computer or a new computer.
You set Aperture to back up a copy of the library to a designated storage area called a vault. For safety and redundancy, use external hard disks to hold your vaults. You can create as many vaults as you deem necessary.
When you back up your photos, Aperture makes a complete copy of the library in its current state. If you remove items from the library, those items are removed from the backup when it is next updated.
All originals for managed images, all versions, and all metadata, previews, and adjustment information associated with your photos are backed up. The versions, previews, and metadata associated with referenced images are also backed up in the vault.
Important:  Referenced images’ originals are not backed up in the vault with the library. Because the originals for referenced images are stored outside of the library, you must manage the backup and archiving of them yourself.
A typical backup system used with Aperture might look like the following:
This system backs up the Aperture library to two vaults stored on external hard disks. You routinely back up the library on one external hard disk. You use the second hard disk as a backup that you keep offsite. You can then rotate your onsite external hard disk with the offsite hard disk to keep all your vaults updated.
To set up your Aperture backup system, you need to do the following:
Determine the number of vaults you need. For example, do you need one for routine backups, one for weekly backups, and one for offsite storage?
Determine the number of hard disks you need for routine backups.
Determine the number of hard disks you’ll use for storing backups offsite.
Connect your hard disk drives to your computer.
Open Aperture and create the vaults you need, assigning a hard disk to each vault.
Update the new, empty vaults with copies of the Aperture library.
Disconnect one of the vault hard disks and take it to an offsite location for safekeeping.
When planning the amount of storage space you’ll need, estimate the amount of disk space needed to hold your existing digital images (photos you plan to import into Aperture) and the amount of space you might need for new projects. For example, RAW images typically require 8 to 25 or more megabytes (MB) of disk space per file. Estimating the number of photos in a typical project and the number of projects you usually create in a year, you can make a rough estimate of what might represent a year’s storage space.

  • How can I change the aspect ratio of an image display

I am snapping a sequence of images and using imgPlot to diplay the images. However, due to my camera specifications [it's a Pulnix 9701 with Pixel Size 11.6μm (H) X 13.3μm (V)], the image I get displayed is elongated in the horizontal direction, i.e. if I snap an image of a square, I get a rectangle on my computer display.
How can I change the aspect ratio of the display on my computer? The only parameters I have seen so far just control what portion of the image is acquired or diplayed, but none actually changes the aspect ratio.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you are using an analog camera, you can set the aspect ratio in MAX. This will correct for non-square pixels.
If you are using a digital camera, I don't think there is a way to fix it during acquisition. You could resample the image to correct the ratios, but that would be a slow, time consuming process.
One other possibility is that your computer monitor is in a mode which is not a standard 4x3 configuration. For example 640x480 and 800x600 are 4:3 ratios. 1200x1024 is not, which tends to distort your displayed images.

  • How do I create a vertical side menu with its own styling separate from the horizontal bar above it?

Hello.  I need assistance in styling my side menu.  I would like for it to  have a different style than the horizontal bar that is above it.  I would like that the side menu have a black background and with white text vertically aligned to the left.  But I would also like that the mouse's arrow to turn into a hand when it touches the letters instead of during the entire width of the background.  When I began styling the text, everything aligned fine until I added the links in html code.  When I added the <a> tag and created a link to another page, the text goes from the left to the center of the black box.  And the entire width is a link rather than just the words.  To correct this, I tried renaming the div tag containg the menu.  I tried renaming the ul tag.  And I tried renaming the li tag and changing the declarations.  None of these ideas worked.  I thought about changing the <a> tag in the head of the document, but that didn't change the styling either.  I also tried creating the black background by inserting a black box as a background image with the links over top of the image.  It didn't work.  I would appreciate your assistance.   I will supply the coding if anyone is interested in looking at it.  Thank you.
    Nora.

I can post a link to the page.  But I will need to upload it.  It will take a day to show.  But after I wrote to you.  I began working with creating additional a:link styles.  I was able to create a shortened clickable area of one the words in the vertical menu.  Your advice reinforced what I have learned.  The following code shows that I started to make different styles of the a:link for each word on the vertical menu.  I think that this will work.  To indicate the different a:link style I used bold letters .  Thank you very much.

  • My iPhone 4 has been dead for 24 hours and it has been charging for 12 hours. I have tried holding the home and lock button down but it still has the black screen, what is wrong with it? It just randomly died on means won't turn back on

My iPhone 4 has been dead for 24 hours and I've been charging it for 12 hours and it still won't turn on. I have tried holding the lock button and home button down, even connected it to computer but nothing's happening, it randomly died on me.

    Hi Lauren,
When troubleshooting power issues, we want to make sure we have followed all steps outlined in the following article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
    - Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    - Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion.
    Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
    - Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    - After at least 15 minutes, if:
                   - The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
                   - The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
                   - Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    - If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
                   - If the display turns on, go to step 4.
                   - If the display remains black, go to next step.
    - Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to
restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    - If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Understanding the size of screen and images on it.

First, a quick thanks to you Todd and others who are providing excellent help. Even deciding what a given thing is can be problematic, let alone knowing where to look for an answer.
I created a credit sequence with 20 pt font. It seemed appropriate in the basic frame, which is perhaps a third or bit less than the screen width. I have the magnification ratio set at 100%, with view set at 1 at the bottom right of the screen.
However, when I previewed the credits at full screen using the check box in the preview pane, the font stayed the same size, rather than appearing much bigger as expected, and almost all of the text was visible on the screen, instead of most of it being concealed below the screen line. My first question is, which image is the correctly proportioned one? Or rather, how can I view the credits in the exact proportion as they would appear on another device, like a television or movie screen? And can I preview the credits on my full computer screen, to better simulate how the image would appear on a bigger screen?

    jmm2255 wrote:
I have to admit that I cannot comprehend that answer on any level. My first (perhaps naive) question is, what happens if people try to share a video or file of a video encoded say at 1280 by 720, and their player's are not compatible with the codec? Will the video appear as jibberish? Will it be compressed in the horizontal or vertical orientation? Will it play too fast or slow?
Resolution and codecs do not directly effect each other.  If a device or application does not have access to the codec a given media item uses, it will be unable to play the file, simple as that.  Natively, there are many files formats that a Mac or Windows PC are unable to play, but most are usually playable with simple software installations.  An iPhone or iPad, as another example, cannot play Flash video files.
I just cannot believe that in this day and age when it appears to an external observer -who is not tech savvy- that everything is interconnected, and people will watch the very same video content on everything from a computer (with all kinds of playback options, Windows media player, Real Player, and many others) to a TV, blackberry, iPad, DVD player, or even a fridge(!), that there is no conformity of standards, or that video cannot be played on multiple media sources. It just makes makes no sense. How do you explain the apparent ease with which video content is exchanged between persons, programs, or devices?
Unfortunately, the variables within the digital video world are greater and more confusing than ever before.  Long gone are the days when video was just PAL or NTSC.  There are thousands of permutations of video codecs, resolutions and playback devices to consider.  Even YouTube provides multiple playback resolutions to suit different viewers, different platforms and different bandwidth issues.  There are, of course, more common file formats and resolutions that are often preferable if the end user is unknown.
In general, design for the highest common denominator.  You can easily make a big video smaller, but doing the opposite is very hard if you want top quality.  So if your audience ranges from HD blu-ray watchers to low-end Youtube, design in HD (1080p) and then create multiple output resolutions as required.
Remember, AE is a design and compositing tool, not a compression tool.  For the best results, render lossless files from After Effects, then use a dedicated compression tool like Adobe Media Encoder to create your final delivery files.

  • Set the compression quality for individual images for exporting a PDF?

When are export a PDF in ID, you are given an option to downsample and compress images. My problem is, I want to compress some images more than others. For example, a photo in the document could be downsampled much more than a png logo. Of course I could go and pre-downsample each image to the right size in photoshop, but that can get kind of involved. Is there a way I could at least exclude one particular image from the compression process?

Well, I didn't find any way to do this in ID, but I do believe its a useful thing to do. In Fact, by doing some careful image-dependent compression, I was able to reduce the size of my pdf by half and have the result still look better than a standard uniform compression. What I did was:
first place all the images in the ID file, size and position them as they should be
then, looking at the rulers, note the horizontal size, in inches, of each image in the document
begin with the first image, open it in photoshop. If you want this image at 200dpi, for example, multiply the horizontal size (from ID) by 200. Change the image size in photoshop to this number.
save the image in photoshop as a jpg and compress as appropriate for the image type
go back to ID, open up the links window, select the image you just changed, and click the update link button
do this with all your images
when you go to export a pdf, don't do any compression or downsampling on the images.. they're already optimised
So as you can see you have to have some idea of the ideal target DPI and compression of each image in your document, and it may require some experimenting. But if you know that some images can be lowered much more than others, I recommend this method. As I said, in my case I was able to reduce the file size by half without negatively effecting the pdf appearance.

  • Changing the default size of imported images

I create slides using other programs and import them into Keynote. Whenever I import an image it comes up as 800 x 613 so I have to go through the inspector to change the proportions (after checking not to scale) to 800 x 600, then have to right click to center it horizontally and then right click again to center vertically.
    1. Is there a way to have Keynote open my images as default of 800 x 600?
    2. Is there a quicker way of doing what I'm doing?

View master slides and select the slide you would like to have the pictures imported on. Insert one of the pictures and set it to the size and the position you want. Then go to Format>Advanced>Define as Media Placeholder. Then when you want to insert you pictures, select the Placeholder and insert the picture you want. It will be scaled to fit the placeholder.
