KDE 3.2.3 is in extra

ok, KDE 3.2.3 is in extra, this one isn't buggy like my last mess
There are known problems with juk, amarok, apollon, k3b etc, these just need a recompile and i have contacted the relevant people, only thing i think hasn't gotten through to the maintainer (mail wise) is musicbrainz (dorphell?) needs a rebuild, then juk stops crashing, any other issues, try recompiling app (with abs) before reporting.
Glad to get it out, and everyone, enjoy

i'm one of the maintainers, who need to rebuild k3b, apollon and the stuff mentioned above ... and i'm compiling them at the moment but this will take some time
one of the pkgs is quanta, that requires kde 3.2.2 - till i update quanta, you can savely use the -d flag to -Suy(d) the newest KDE without waiting that quanta is ready

  • Kde 3.3.2 now in [extra]

    hi
the new kde version is now in testing
that are prepackages but if nothing changes they will be the final one
please test them and report errors
changes since 3.3.1 can be found here:
    http://www.kde.org/announcements/change … o3_3_2.php
    changes from my side:
kdebindings now compile again with java support
    added qscintilla to kdebindings
the startkde script has been changed again!
please the guys with tcsh problems test it
    added /opt/kde/lib/pkg-config to kde.sh
modified arch splash screen a little bit
    cleaned up and added depends
    enjoy new kde 3.3.2 release
    greetings
    tpowa

Is anyone else having problems with the document relations toolbar that kdeaddons provides for konqueror?  I just installed the version of kdeaddons from testing (as part of a completely fresh arch install, so there were no prior version of kde installed) and now everytime I open a tab, a new document relations toolbar opens up on the left side.  This occurs even when I set the Tools/Document Relations/Configure setting to Never.  And these toolbars never vanish.  When I close the tab, they remain.  Here's a screenshot of my konqueror window with three tabs open and six document relations toolbars.
    http://img107.exs.cx/img107/5305/l6zkonq.png
Is there somewhere else I should be looking to turn off the document relations feature?  I like the stuff provided by kdeaddons, but all these toolbars are a little annoying.

    What's going on?

This is a good reason to start your adventure with abs and makepkg.
    Fist uninstall kde-i18n-es with
    pacman -R kde-i18n-es
    Synchronize abs tree by running
    abs
as root. Then copy the PKGBUILD file
    mkdir /var/abs/local/kde-i18n-es
    cp /var/abs/extra/i18n/kde-i18n-es/PKGBUILD to /var/abs/local/kde-i18n-es/
Edit the copied PKGBUILD file and change the lines like this:
    pkgver to 3.2.1,
    pkgurl to ....stable/3.2.1/....,
    depends to kdebase=3.2.1.
Remove the line which starts with md5sums....
    Save the file and run
    makepkg
    in the new directory.
    After makepkg finishes run
    makepkg -g >>PKGBUILD
This will add the new and correct md5sum line. Edit the file again and move this line where it was placed originally.
Now you can upgrade kde as usually and install the newly created i18n package with
    pacman -A /var/abs/local/kde-i18n-es/kde-i18n-es-3.2.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
Alternatively you can create a local repository - read
    man pacman
    for instructions.
This is what I've done with kde-i18n-pl.  It is really easy and you will always be up to date when upgrading kde. Enjoy :-)

  • How to upgrade to KDE 4.3

    Dear all,

    How could I do~?
    Thanks

Run "pacman -Qo /usr/share/apps/bball/bball.svgz" and if it belongs to some package, remove that package. If not, use -f pacman switch.

  • Current VS Extra

I realize this is probably a totally newbie question, but it's been itching at me for the past few days.
Why is mozilla-firefox in current, while mozilla and mozilla-thunderbird are in extra?  Also, why is part of KDE in current, and the other part in extra?  This caused at least ten people to get on IRC yesterday and ask why they can't upgrade KDE properly due to the first extra mirror not yet updating.  One would think all of KDE should be in one repository to prevent this in the future.
I'm not quite sure how extra and current are decided upon, but it appears to be rather random, which causes far too much confusion at the moment (at least for me.)
Also, the Totem package has been out of date for quite some time now, shouldn't it be removed from the repositories and moved into unstable or something?
One more thing... in ABS, why is xfce4 in the root /var/abs directory?  Shouldn't it be in x11 or extra? (once again, extra causes confusion for me)
    -Vardyr

I'm not quite sure how extra and current are decided upon, but it appears to be rather random, which causes far too much confusion at the moment (at least for me.)
Unstable is for very experimental package that can foundamentally change archlinux functionality
    Current/release
they contain the packages you find in the full cd install
release are exaclty the same on the CD
    current represent the packages updated
extra are official package officially mantained by archlinux developer/mntainers but that are considered extra to the cd
both kde and gnome are in extra mainly due to their size, keeping them on the CD is very difficoult
Instead of them on the CD there is xfce. Its size is very little compared to kde and gnome, in this way using the cd you can install a full working desktop enviroment.
Why is mozilla-firefox in current, while mozilla and mozilla-thunderbird are in extra?
I dunno, probably to provide a graphical web client on the cd, I agree that also thunderbird should be in current.
Having the 3 of them is retundat, firefox/thunderbird OR mozilla
Also, why is part of KDE in current, and the other part in extra? This caused at least ten people to get on IRC yesterday and ask why they can't upgrade KDE properly due to the first extra mirror not yet updating. One would think all of KDE should be in one repository to prevent this in the future.
Wich part of kde is not in extra. KDE offical application are all in extra
    http://www.archlinux.org/packages.php?s … ate=&pp=50
Also, the Totem package has been out of date for quite some time now, shouldn't it be removed from the repositories and moved into unstable or something?
As I wrote the purpoise of unstable is another. When a pkg is outadet it is up to the mantainer to update it, old package version simply disappear.
One more thing... in ABS, why is xfce4 in the root /var/abs directory? Shouldn't it be in x11 or extra? (once again, extra causes confusion for me)
xfce is considere a special cathegory, several apckage that all togheter  (or part of them) give you a working "system", as well as kde and gnome.
if you go unde xfce dir there are severeal other ir each with a name of one of the xfce package.
In abs root you find the current cathegory, in extra (name of the repository) dir you find the dir name of each cathegory in extra.
Do not confuse cathegory name (x11, xfce, kde, gnome etc. etc.) with package name (kde-lib, gnome-lib, kde-base, kde-pim)

  • Partially PekWM related: how to improve 2D performance?

I'm not sure how to explain this in correct English, but in short:
    - when a window is dragged over the desktop in PekWM the 2D experience "dragging" slow.
    - objects aren't redrawn quickly and hence dragging behaves like I'm "painting" the screen with windows boarders.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to explain here. In Awesome I don't see this awkwardness when dragging floating windows, neither in XFCE4 or KDE. Does PekWM need some extra xorg settings to play nice and smooth on the desktop?
PekWM might not become my default environment, Awesome is, but I'm planning to use it as a replacement for a pure XFCE installation I sometime use.
Last edited by KimTjik (2009-03-08 19:38:47)

Nvidia 7600GT + nvidia proprietary drivers
Performance is good in games, video playback and editing, blender and so forth. Like I wrote, in DE:s like XFCE and KDE nothing like it is noticed, just dragging in Awesome doesn't produce anything like it either.
I've compared with plain vesa and the above description is consistent, but with worse overall performance of course. I did however discover some distinguishable disadvantages in PekWM while running some tests (driver independent):
    - dragging on a clean desktop doesn't "paint" windows all over the screen, but performance of redrawing windows isn't as good as in Awesome and XFCE
    - the real problem in PekWM happens when I drag one window over another, then the dragged top windows "paint" frames and it takes some time before they disappear
PekWM, Awesome and XFCE are all different from each other, thus at least leaving the possibility open that this issue might be driver independent. What do you think?

  • KDE SC 4.5.0 moved to [extra]

KDE SC 4.5.0 has moved into the [extra] repository. Notable changes with respect to previous releases are:
    * kdepim has seen no new release, please continue to use version 4.4.5
    * due to incompatibility with ruby 1.9, ruby kdebindings are not provided
    * webkit support in konqueror is provided by kwebkitpart
    * KDM is now started as the kdm user
    * upstream removed five translations: csb, mai, mk, si and tg
The full upstream changelog is available here.
Several users reported issues with kwin hanging when changing settings in the kdesettings dialog. So far this is only known to happen on some Intel and ATI cards with opengl compositing enabled. Possible workarounds include:
    * use xrender instead of opengl compositing
    * disable compositing
    * export "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" before starting KDE
    [edit]
The previous mentioned option to disable direct rendering in the kdesettings menu is ignored by KDE. Instead the "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" variable should be exported before starting KDE
Last edited by pressh (2010-08-27 07:22:39)

Thanks for your work devs. I upgraded from a tty and everything went smoothly. KDE 4.5 is the first version that seems really snappy on my intel laptop, but I suspect this is because it's the first time it uses direct rendering (with the known bugs of course). The system settings hanging bug disappears if I put
    export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
in my /etc/profile but then I get the mediocre performance I always had. Also, can sb confirm that previous versions of KDE used indirect rendering on intel chips? glxinfo always showed that direct rendering was used, but I suspect this wasn't actually the case. This time, glxinfo shows that direct rendering isn't used when I hack the /etc/profile file. Anyways, I prefer to have the speed boost with the few glitches :-).
    Cheers

  • [extra:editors] nvu 1.0 with KDE mimetypes

    Introduction
The Nvu WYSIWYG web editor is available on two flavors:  the standard build which do not require KDE, and another one which use KDE to provide mimetypes icons on the Site Manager. This thread supports only the KDE mimetypes version.  For the non KDE version, look here.
Below is a comparison picture of both Site Managers so you can compare and decide then which version do you want to install.
Note: Both packages share the same directory structure, which means only one of them can be installed at the same time. That's the reason a conflict restriction exists between them.
    Pre Install Notes
    1. If upgrading from 0.80 or earlier, remove the .nvu dir in your home folder.  Already have 0.90 or later?  Can keep your dir and settings.
    2. Look the Change Log at the botton for a summary of the changes.
    Installation
    1. Grab a gziped tar from on AUR site here, or the splited files below:
    a. PKGBUILD
    b. mozconfig
    c. nvu.desktop
    d. mozilla-1.7.3-ft2.patch or get it from /var/abs/network/mozilla-firefox (or mozilla-thunderbird)
    e. nvu-0.70-domainfix.patch
    f. launcher.patch
    g. mozilla-ext
    h. nvu-browser-ext
    i. nvu-1.0PR-kdesitemanager.patch
    j. nvu-nonroot.tar.gz
    2. Create the folder to store the files with the name nvu-kde on your abs/local folder
    $ mkdir /var/abs/local/nvu-kde
    3. Put the files on that directory
    $ cp * /var/abs/local/nvu-kde
    4. Change to /var/abs/local/nvu-kde dir and build the package
    # cd /var/abs/local/nvu-kde && makepkg
    5. Install the package
    # pacman -U nvu-kde-1.0-1.pkg.tar.gz (Upgrading a previous version installed, or)
    # pacman -A nvu-kde-1.0-1.pkg.tar.gz (Adding or installing a new program)
    Post Installation & Enhancements
After installing Nvu and recommended prior to its first execution, but can be done anytime, visit this link which allow the normal user to add themes & extensions to Nvu and in fact, to all mozilla product line installed on your computer.
This step will not be included on the package until the changes explained on that HOWTO became adopted by other Arch mozilla packages.
    Troubleshooting:
Click the icon and doesn't run:  Run it from the console, and if you got a loop message with the phrase "Loading the extensions datasource", then as root type:
    $ nvu -register
and run nvu again as a user, and report your sucess or failure here.
Loading the extensions datasource message on shell:  Look above for the workaround.
    FAQ
    1. Browse button and help hyperlinks open mozilla-firefox and I would like to open another browser. Edit your /opt/mozilla/bin/mozilla-ext, comment the line exec $MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME/firefox $url and uncomment one of the other lines.  Currently you can choose between firefox, mozilla, opera and konqueror.

2005-02-13 (0.81-1) Upgraded to 0.81, nonroot patch replaced by nvu -register, new script to activate browse button and help hyperlinks. Locale dirs of win and mac removed.
    2005-02-05 (0.80-1) Updated to 0.80.
2005-01-19 (0.70-2) Freetype2 fix, file structure matches other mozilla apps. Mozilla-common dependency added.
2005-01-12 (0.70-1) First version with KDE mimetypes support.
    Hope you enjoy it.

New package for the 0.81 version.
In addition to the updated version, I made the following enhancements or changes to the package:
    1. Remove some locale directories bundle with nvu which belongs to mac and windows architectures.
    2. Added a mozilla-ext script which is execute a predefined browser either when the browse button is pressed or a hyperlink from the help menu entries is clicked.  Previous versions do nothing on those actions.  The default browser is firefox, but the file can be edited if your current browser is other.  Just edit /opt/mozilla/bin/mozilla-ext, comment the first browser which is firefox, and uncomment the one you want to use.
    3. The most important in terms of usage and future package maintenance is the replacement of the nonroot.tar.gz file with  the -register option.  That change takes out the most difficult and time consuming patch  of the package.  That means faster releases.
Since many changes were done to the package, please test it and post any success or failure.

  • KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

    hi
kde 3.4.0 packages are now in testing repository.
they are prepackages, only showstoppers will be fixed in them.
KDE 3.4.0 will be announced next week, then the abs PKGBUILDS will work again, when official tarballs are made public by kde.
missing i18n packages will be done later.

I have no time to check what is causing the crashes cos the session closes just one second after the "crash warning window" appears twice and in the .xsession-errors there is only this:
xset:  bad font path element (#177), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
        Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

  • Kde from extra or kdemod?

I dont care about modularity...I just want to ask which is better, cause kdemod has some backports,etc....What do you think?
Last edited by kozer (2008-11-19 22:31:40)

I had a play with KDE4 both mod and stock arch installs. Neither booted any faster than the other. KDE mod had the better default install IMO, all the junk supplied in the stock arch one is a bit overwhelming. Also KDE mod has binary packages of Amarok-svn and K3B svn if your into eithe of those.
Otherwise the real differences were minimal, both installed and ran, neither had any obviously stupid defaults. In anycase I tried out KDE4.2 (beta stuff) and it still was not anywhere near a full desktop solution, its just too pieced together for my liking at the moment. I definately prefer it to gnome now though, and will probably give it another try in a year or so when its all stabilized (plenty of crashes in both kdemod/stock on the 4.1.3 build, and the beta is even worse of course).
If I had to recommend either I would say KDEmod.

  • [solved] Xorg-1.8 + KDE on Asus 1201n : dupplicated Fn key event

    Hello,
after upgrading to Xorg 1.8 one week ago, I noticed that my Fn keys (sound up/down, mute) were dupplicated. For example, if I press Fn+F10 (=MUTE/Unmute), the sound get muted and immediately unmuted.
    Moreover,
    My xorg.conf:
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Layout0"

    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"

    EndSection
    10-evdev.conf:
    # Catchall classes for input devices

    # and other devices that we don't really want to use. The list below
    # matches everything but joysticks.

Any idea what could be the problem ?

    Nothing ?
Switchng off hal deamon and cleaning ~/.kde* has no effect...
So, after searching on google again an again, still nothing found.... even among the Ubuntu specific issue where post are terminated
with "wait next version of the package", the windows-style answer.
I will continue my attempts to fix this... but my conclusion about this is that hal was more precise in his behavior than udev...

  • KDE Plasma 5 crashing at seemingly random times

I've been having this problem for a while now and so far I've been unsuccessful in trying to troubleshoot it myself.  My computer will be working along fine, and then all of a sudden will freeze.  No mouse pointer movement, no keyboard input, trying to switch to a different X session fails (ctrl+alt+F2, etc.), even the numlock key will stop functioning.  This forces me to manually reset the computer each time.
Checking the logs (journalctl --since today) shows this alarm at the time of every crash:
    Mar 04 11:32:00 mycomp.domain.local kdeinit5[848]: Created alarm 16777226
Obviously the date/time and PID are different, but it's always kdeinit5 and alarm 16777226.
Google has turned up nothing useful for me that I can see and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when the crashes occur; sometimes I'm running VMs through VirtualBox and doing a million things at once and other times I'm not doing much except browsing the web and reading the news.
I'm speculating that it might be an issue with some of the different KDE packages conflicting somehow, but I have no idea which ones it might be or if that's even remotely the case.
If it helps, here is a complete list of packages that I currently have installed (pacman -Q):

The issue still persists.  I have completely wiped and re-installed everything twice now, the second time including the /home partition the second time.
Any help, suggestions or advice would be *really* helpful.
Here's some more info about my system if that helps:
