KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]
hi
kde 3.4.0 packages are now in testing repository.
they are prepackages, only showstoppers will be fixed in them.
KDE 3.4.0 will be announced next week, then the abs PKGBUILDS will work again, when official tarballs are made public by kde.
missing i18n packages will be done later.
Please have a look at the new KDE wiki at:
http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE
especially the upgraders should read it!
enjoy the new kde release
best regards
tpowa
Yes, them appeared with the last RC, but maybe it is just something with my own configuration cos I am using the same .kde directory since kde 3.3... I have no time to check what is causing the crashes cos the session closes just one second after the "crash warning window" appears twice and in the .xsession-errors there is only this:
xset: bad font path element (#177), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

KDE 3.4 & Window Transparency Problem
I have just installed KDE 3.4, and after a bit of trouble and reinstalling it a couple of times, it now works fine. However, I remembered seeing something about transparency and shadows in this new version of KDE, so I wanted to see if I could turn them on. After enabling the necessary options in the Control Centre, I restarted X and logged back in, but it gave me a message saying I had to put
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
In my xorg.conf in order for it to work properly. I did this, and when I logged in again, the results were... interesting. Here is a screenshot (I hope this free hosting thing works):
[URL=http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=3/7507213817.png&s=x2][/URL]
I have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro graphics card, but I do not have direct rendering working, because I cannot make their kernel module (the latest driver version from the ATI website) compile with Linux kernel 2.6.11. I did have it working under 2.6.10 though, so I rebooted and checked to see if this would fix things. It did not. The 2.6.10 kernel I used to use also has a different frame buffer driver compiled in there (I don't know if this makes a difference, but I thought I'd mention it anyway).
If anyone knows what I can do to make this work, then I would be very grateful indeed. Here are my system specs:
1.3 GHz AMD Athlon processor
768MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Custom kernel 2.6.10/2.6.11 (depends which one I boot)
Latest pacman packages of xorg, KDE, everything else from current/extra
Thanks in advance!I tried it, and it works on my setup. But it is SLOW . So I removed it

[solved] KDE 4.9; no sensors
As you can see, the graph for network and cpu has disappeared, because there are no sensors available. Is there a fix for this?
Last edited by 12eason (2012-08-12 20:19:58)By now KDE 4.9 is in [extra], but I thought I suggest this anyway: have you tried to (re)move the respective config file? It's ~/.kde4.share/ksysguardrc

[SOLVED] kde 4.8.4?
Hi All,
Just installed Arch and really like it. I was reading in the forums that people are running KDE 4.8.4, and it appears to be in the repos, however, when I do an about in any KDE app, it shows 4.8.3.
How can I get 4.8.4?
Thanks!

[SOLVED] Cant figure out how to install kde 4.3rc from official "testi
Well, I'm very new to this and I have lots of questions about Arch and I've been reading lots of forum posts and wiki articles.
Now,I've installed everything in the beginners guide with exception of a DE. And that's because I want to install kde 4.3rc even if the development id not complete yet. I want to install it from official repositories and not from kdemod.
I see there is a kde-unstable repo that I have to enable. But I kind of read that to use it I have to enable testing also and "know how to use it" And well, thats the problem about being new to Arch isn't it? I don't know how to use it nor there is some wiki article called testing.
So I have 2 questions:
How can I "use" testing repo? Are there guidelines to use it or maybe recommendations? I'm thinking about enabling that repo only for kde 4.3 and not for other packages, so, How do I do that?
And also, If I install kde 4.3rc now, whene it is moved to extra in a couple of days/weeks, how should I disable kde testing repo and enable extra again to keep my kde up to date? Will I need to reinstall everything when this happens?
Lol... Those where like 10 questions instead of 2... But maybe the answer is very small. I hope someone can give me some advice.
Thanks

The file you want is at /etc/pacman.conf so use your editor of choice and open that file. So say I use the vi editor it would be >>>
vi /etc/pacman.conf
If the package you want is in testing uncomment testing repo.
If its at a custom repo put in the custom package repository info at bottom of that file.
Then use pacman -S "package-name" to install what you want.
EDIT
Heres some links maybe some help to you, I don't use kde so don't know anything about it.

KDE Applications 14.12 repo
The KDE Applications 14.12 pre-release is available for testing in the repository:
Server 1: http://kde-beta.wirephire.com/repo (courtesy of wirephire.com)
Server 2: http://arojas.hol.es/repos/kde-beta/
Pakages are x86_64 only, and signed with the key ID 941C2A25
The following packages are ported to KF5: kwrite, konsole, gwenview, kate, kalgebra, kanagram, khangman, kig, parley, okteta, kapptemplate. They will replace the corresponding KDE4 version. There are also three additional packages katepart4, konsolepart4 and oktetapart4, which are needed for some KDE4 applications that still use their Kparts. You will need to install them manually if you use any of these apps (e.g. yakuake) before upgrading.
Please test and report packaging and upgrading issues in this thread, so that we help making the update as smooth as possible when KDE Applications 14.12 hits [extra]. Other bugs and issues should be reported upstream to http://bugs.kde.org
EDIT 30/11/14: Konversation 1.6 beta (KF5 based) added
EDIT 12/12/14: Calligra 2.9 beta added
EDIT 16/1/15: KDE Applications 14.12 is now in [testing], so removed all outdated beta packages.

[Solved] Print dialog under KDE broken?
Hi,
this is how the print dialog has been looking for me in KDE (system is up-to-date) for the last 2-3 months now.
I was hoping it would get fixed after a few KDE/CUPS updates but some time has passed, updates came and it's still broken.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Is there a way to fix this?
Thank you
Last edited by pootzko (2012-06-10 09:52:39)arojas wrote:which print dialog is that? It doesn't look like a KDE print dialog to me, looks more like GTK. Do you use the oxygen-gtk style?
hmm, I am not sure. in systemsettings I have this:
application appearance -> style -> oxygen
workspace appearance -> window decorations -> oxygen
workspace appearance -> desktop -> theme -> air
gtk styles and fonts -> useanotherstyle: QtCurve
I don't know if this oxygen style/decoration/theme is gtk or not. how do I check that? I have this oxygen-gtk package installed on my system but I don't know if it's in use somewhere or not.
the funny thing is, this does not happen for firefox for example. but it does for EOG (eye of gnome) where both of them are gnome apps if I am correct. it does not happen for kate (kde text editor), does for gedit (now that I opened gedit, I see it's broken in the same way as this print dialog from the screenshot above is).
@msx - I'll try reproducing the bug with fresh .kde and post results here. extra/kdeadmin-system-config-printer-kde wasn't on my system, but I installed it, rebooted but nothing changed. other packages you mentioned were already on my system.

Kf5 and kde 4.13 cohabitation : issue launching dolphin
After installing the new (kf5) package group from [extra], I went back to my usual openbox desktop. When trying to launch dolphin (kde 4.13 version from [extra]) I got this :
% dolphin
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceAdded(QString)
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceRemoved(QString)
No dolphin windows appears and the program does not exit until CTRL-C.
Since kf5 relies on recent dependencies and the problem was looking related to upower, I did update upower to
aur/upower-git-systemd
and dolphin is now running fine.
The two previous "No such signal" lines are still there, though.Until recently veromix worked fine but now it doesn't. I think this is the problem:
File "/usr/share/apps/plasma_scriptengine_python/pyappletscript.py", line 22, in <module>
from PyKDE4.plasma import Plasma
RuntimeError: the sip module implements API v11.0 but the PyKDE4.plasma module requires API v10.1
According to their changelog they changed it for their sip v4.15.5 release http://www.riverbankcomputing.com/stati … /ChangeLog
Downgrading sip, python2-sip and python-sip to [extra] brings this:
File "/usr/share/apps/plasma_scriptengine_python/pyappletscript.py", line 20, in <module>
from PyQt4.QtCore import *
RuntimeError: the sip module implements API v10.0 to v10.1 but the PyQt4.QtCore module requires API v11.0
so I guess PyKDE is just lagging behind and everyone else is already using the new thing?
edit: Maybe they made a mistake with their release tarball? I have not tested it, but I got the PKGBUILD from here: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … e/PKGBUILD and made it build from the kde 4.13 branch of their git repository and it works: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=rdjEJ9tU
Well, except for
Error connecting to veromix-service:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.veromix.pulseaudio.qt exited with status 1
But maybe that solves itself after the next kde restart.
edit2: It didn't.
For some reason it doesn't launch some dbus service foobar.
python2 /usr/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids/veromix-plasmoid/dbus-service/veromix-service-qt.py
Then it works.
Also, in the last kde update the former issue with pykde got solved I think.

I realize this is probably a totally newbie question, but it's been itching at me for the past few days.
Why is mozilla-firefox in current, while mozilla and mozilla-thunderbird are in extra? Also, why is part of KDE in current, and the other part in extra? This caused at least ten people to get on IRC yesterday and ask why they can't upgrade KDE properly due to the first extra mirror not yet updating. One would think all of KDE should be in one repository to prevent this in the future.
I'm not quite sure how extra and current are decided upon, but it appears to be rather random, which causes far too much confusion at the moment (at least for me.)
Also, the Totem package has been out of date for quite some time now, shouldn't it be removed from the repositories and moved into unstable or something?
One more thing... in ABS, why is xfce4 in the root /var/abs directory? Shouldn't it be in x11 or extra? (once again, extra causes confusion for me)
-VardyrI'm not quite sure how extra and current are decided upon, but it appears to be rather random, which causes far too much confusion at the moment (at least for me.)
Unstable is for very experimental package that can foundamentally change archlinux functionality
Current/release
they contain the packages you find in the full cd install
release are exaclty the same on the CD
current represent the packages updated
extra are official package officially mantained by archlinux developer/mntainers but that are considered extra to the cd
both kde and gnome are in extra mainly due to their size, keeping them on the CD is very difficoult
Instead of them on the CD there is xfce. Its size is very little compared to kde and gnome, in this way using the cd you can install a full working desktop enviroment.
Why is mozilla-firefox in current, while mozilla and mozilla-thunderbird are in extra?
I dunno, probably to provide a graphical web client on the cd, I agree that also thunderbird should be in current.
Having the 3 of them is retundat, firefox/thunderbird OR mozilla
Also, why is part of KDE in current, and the other part in extra? This caused at least ten people to get on IRC yesterday and ask why they can't upgrade KDE properly due to the first extra mirror not yet updating. One would think all of KDE should be in one repository to prevent this in the future.
Wich part of kde is not in extra. KDE offical application are all in extra
http://www.archlinux.org/packages.php?s … ate=&pp=50
Also, the Totem package has been out of date for quite some time now, shouldn't it be removed from the repositories and moved into unstable or something?
As I wrote the purpoise of unstable is another. When a pkg is outadet it is up to the mantainer to update it, old package version simply disappear.
One more thing... in ABS, why is xfce4 in the root /var/abs directory? Shouldn't it be in x11 or extra? (once again, extra causes confusion for me)
xfce is considere a special cathegory, several apckage that all togheter (or part of them) give you a working "system", as well as kde and gnome.
if you go unde xfce dir there are severeal other ir each with a name of one of the xfce package.
In abs root you find the current cathegory, in extra (name of the repository) dir you find the dir name of each cathegory in extra.
Do not confuse cathegory name (x11, xfce, kde, gnome etc. etc.) with package name (kde-lib, gnome-lib, kde-base, kde-pim) -
KDEmod 4.1 (RC1) packages
It doesn't look like many people know of them, and since we could use some more testing before 4.1 is released, I'm posting here.
An up-to-date-ish post here, about how to install it:
http://www.kdemod.ath.cx/bbs/viewtopic.php?pid=4611
In addition to the normal KDE packages, we provide some extra plasmoids and other nice packages, like Yakuake, Arxin and Shaman. We also have some KOffice 2 pre-alpha packages, if you want to try it out (thanks to boom1992 ).
I have made PKGBUILDs for the kde-nepomuk stuff from playground (tags:/-kio-slave and the like), but because funkyou is on holiday, it isn't added to the repo's yet (the x86_64-version can be gotten from http://kdemod41.likbilen.com/ however, and everything should be kosher by monday).
If the official repo is slow, there's a complete mirror at:
http://kdemod.iskrembilen.com/repo/unstable/i686/
http://kdemod.iskrembilen.com/repo/unstable/x86_64/
Please note that these packages are still rather unstable, but they are really getting there. Stuff that's missing is the language packs and kdebindings (looking into it this weekend, together with building 4.0.84).
(Oh, and before someone starts mentioning duplication of effort, these are split packages, like the kdemod 3.5 packages, and also, we just build the snapshots, we don't do daily rebuilds of SVN trunk. )

Yeah, I noticed that before I installed it. Thanks for the info, though.
It's just that I've installed the KDEmod4 packages at least half a dozen different times on fresh Arch installs and have done some upgrades, too, but as it turns out the Kde4 packages released by tanis have always worked better on my end than any of the others I've tried. That said, I'll probably stick with them until the official release goes into the Arch repos.
Please don't think I'm criticizing any of the kdemod stuff, because I'm not. It just hasn't worked out all that well for me when I've installed it. I'm actually very glad it's available for those that want it.
Thanks if it is you that makes it available.
No problem at all, and thanks for the kind words
But, if you have time and patience, it would be nice if you posted a bug about the problems in the bug tracker at http://kdemod.ath.cx/bugs/ -
Any chance for PyQt with phonon?
I am developing a PyQt app (uRSSus, it's in AUR, too ;-) and would like to use phonon in it. Is there a reason why phonon is disabled in Qt and PyQt?
mindfall wrote:IIRC rationale was that Phonon in Qt 4.4 was still too buggy while KDE4 Phonon worked better. And since Phonon is basically a KDE tech imported into Qt, the Qt version might always be a bit behind?
KDE's Phonon is an extra package, with no dependencies on KDE.. so maybe one could use KDE's Phonon with bindings from PyKDE4 even for plain PyQt apps?
But kdebindings-python doesn't seem to include phonon either. -
[SOLVED] Quake Live on FireFox
Wanting to frag and get fragged, i tried quakelive.com: installation of the extension seemed to work fine and it has downloaded what it needed.
But here's a problem: i cannot enter any game, not even practice or training center, it just bails out on me.
It's Arch x86 with extra/KDE 4.5.3 and extra/firefox on a laptop.

Last edited by lucak3 (2010-11-21 12:29:35)How can it be? I mean, i went to the site, it didn't ask me if system was x86 or x86-64, and i installed the proposed extension...
I'm gonna remove and reinstall it.
EDIT: removed extension, restarted firefox, reinstalled extension, restarted firefox -> same as before
how can i get it to install the x86 extension version?
EDIT2: in the plugin dir, i renamed the x64 plugin and created a soft link to the i386 one.

Hi.
I can't find how to change the language of my kde interface.
There is article about locale and i tried to follow it :
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Locale
but i still can't change system language.
In control center -> Regional&Accessibility -> Country/Region... -> Locale i have only English.
So how i add another one?
Thanks.You need one of these

I just installed the latest 686 iso. im going to give gnome a try. i just completed the arch install on ext4, the first thing i ran is pacman -Syu gnome. is there anything else i should know about right off the bat, either concerning the fact that its a laptop as far as sytem configuration (i will be looking over this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … filesystem and , or any first suggestions about recommended DE components or anything that might make my experience ultra cool and blow away my KDE desktop box?
