Kde 4.2 won't login after xorg-server-1.6.1.901-1 upgrade

I upgraded my system this afternoon, but when the upgrade completed all my window decorations were gone and plasma as down.  I restarted kde from virtual console 1 and the login screen was brought up.  Now when i go to login i get stuck in an endless loop.  I type in my username and password, and then after a few seconds the login window reappears.
I checked /var/log/errors.log and there are a number of lines like this:
kdm_greet[3623]: Cannot open default user face
i then installed gdm which wouldn't log me in either, but gave an error along the lines of xclient doesn't exist
this error occured after installing xorg-server-1.6.1.901-1
any help would be appeciated as i can't use arch at all atm!

sorry, i forgot to mention it.  I've tried both of those things and niether helped.  Same problem.  I also changed the permissions on the /tmp directory which removed another error message to the effect of: cannnot save user authorization,
oh and just fyi, my disk is not full, there is at least 5gb free on that partition, so thats not what was causing that error.

Macbook Pro won't login after sleep (sleep with low battery --> mac turned off maybe it's called save sleep)
So if I hit the powerbutton my mbp booted like it is booting from the save sleep (so very fast and the login screen is there in about 10 sec.and there is no apple logo while booting just the desktop screen in "unsharp" ore foggy however...)
Then when i see the login (if the keyboard backlight turned on) i wand do tipe in my code but it won't work... the trackpad is not working; and when i plug-in a usb mouse the mbp is not powering on the usb-mouse (laser is off)
    Why is that this way?
Is there n option to wake up the mbp fromm deep/save sleep without haveing issiues after that?
    THX

Sorry for such a long delayed response...
I was able to get to an apple store this past weekend, and let me tell you... I'm about finished with there great "support".
Right before I went to the store, I tried to eject a disk. Well the cloth in the SuperDrive (I assume to protect the drive from dust and such) Pulled up with my disk. So I get the Apple store, describe my problem and what happened with the cloth piece. The "Genius" writes up a form and tells me they have to run diagnostic and it will take a couple days... and I will get a call when its done (1-3 days).
Well on day number 3 I called up the store and they told me it was ready to be picked up? I asked if anything had been fixed and they told me they could not reproduce my "sleep issue", so they couldn't fix that.. but told me the cloth piece in the SuperDrive had been fixed.
I drive an hour (one way) to the Apple store to find that all they did was PULLED OUT the cloth... they did not replace it! So basically I have a hole for a Super Drive.
I asked why I was not called to say that my computer was ready to be picked up... didn't get an answer on that one.
I asked why my SuperDrive was said to be fixed, when nothing was done... they told me that it would have to be sent out to the factory store for that to be fixed (FIRST TIME THEY MENTIONED THAT!) Oh, and that would take 5-7 business days. Well that's not going to happen right now considering I'm a college student that NEEDS a working computer!
So I go home, angry... start just putting all my important documents back on the computer. And the screen starts blinking!!!! I guess now I have the same thing described in another post on these forms...
Lets just say that I'm not very happy with Apple right now! If anybody else has success on either the sleep issue or the screen blinking issue, please let me know!
    Thank you!

  • Mac Pro (v1.1) won't login after installing new video card

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro from 2006 and after my NVidia 7300GT burned, I bought a Geforce 8800GT to replace my old card. After I installed it to the motherboard following the user manual, I turn on my mac and I get the white screen with the apple logo but it won't login. I left it like that for 30 minutes, then I forced restart and the same thing happens. Does anyone have a clue why this happens and how can it be fixed?
    Thank you

8800 required 10.5.2 or later (10.5.3 DVD and 10.5.6 DVDs were sold, though now $29 will get you 10.6.3).
No OS earlier than 10.5.2, in addition to there having been two versions of the card, EFI32 (2006-7) and EFI64 (2008+).
my link to ebay doesn't list it now:

  • Xserve won't login after a restart

This has been happening quite often our Xserve will be running fine then i'll notice that some Apps aren't opening (retrospect - PureFTP - Server Admin - Finder) so i'll restart but it doesn't autologin and rejects a typed password. i do have a NetRestore image so i boot from another drive and Restore. But i would love to get to the bottom of why this happens.
it is about to happen again because the server has become unstable - everytime i open retrospect it now hangs and stops the AFP service! once i start AFP again its all fine - but i am certain next time i try to restart to clear the problems it will fail to login.
Below is my console log for the past few days - there are a few mention of not recognising password - any ideas how to recover from this without restoring from an image?

    Several questions come to mind.
    1) Why are you using auto-login on the server. Ideally the server should run headless without any user logged in on the GUI. I realize that's not always practical, but it raises questions about how you're using the server.
    2) Most of the problems sound like they're related to directory services since that's where the user accounts are stored. How are you using directory services? Is the server standalone? part of an Open DIrectory domain? Some other domain? a Directory Master itself?
    3) Why are you using Retrospect? It's one of the buggiest piece of tra^H^H^H software around. I don't know anyone that's using it successfully on Mac OS X Server, and I've heard of several people whose problems have disappeared once they remove the software. May or may not be your problem, but it's an easy one to test in the short term.

  • [SOLVED] KDE won't start after Xorg update(nvidia driver)

After update, I disabled hotplug, with :

Well, I rebuilded my xorg.conf with
    Xorg -configure
and it started working, even with evdev driver, just had to add
    Option "AllowEmptyInput" "False"
in section "ServerFlags". I'm not really sure what caused that error.

  • 15" Retina Macbook Pro won't login after 10.8.3 update failure

I just attempted to installing 10.8.3 on my Retina mbp and after failing I could no longer login. When attempting login, the screen would flash white then go back to the login screen.
I was able to get to safe boot by holding the shift key during boot.
From safe boot I was able to download the 10.8.3 combo update. OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 (Combo)http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640
After reapplying the update and it succeeded and I was able to log back in to normal mode.
    Hope this helps someone!

Word of advice. It is a business. Don't just install changes, not without updating your cloned backup, not on day one (security patches that are critical are important but VERY often even those have a high rate of 'breaking' the china and causing havoc.
High fans etc are rarely PRAM related. Might be SMC.
Install OS X on another drive. Update to 10.8.2. Clone. Put clone on shelf. Rerun the COMBO update - if you are using delta update, they do sometimes fail to take, it use to be combo updates were the only safe update but seems updates are better and safer.
but it is best to have a TEST system if possible to try a new update or program on, even if that is just a disk that you clone, and keep and leave your production system AS IS for a week... or two.
unplug everything. hit power. connect only power and one monitor and kb/mouse.

  • Mac won't login after Leopard update

i recently ran the update for itunes and quicktime and it asked me to restart my computer. I did and everything looked fine. I try to log in and it would take me to the Setup Assint..the one you get when you are turning on your mac for the first time.
    what can i do?? thanks!

Try rebooting in safe mode. Restart and hold the shift key down when you hear the chime. You should then reach the login screen, and then choose restart from there. That has worked for most people.

  • MDT 2012 won't login after first reboot - workgroup only

I am setting up an mdt server for a new company that we accquired, right now they are only in a workgroup, with no network connectivity for at least 2 months back to our domain.  We are using WIN7 ENT X64SP1.  We do this within our own domain logging
in with a local account without problems, but for some reason not working here.
    <AutoLogon>
    <Enabled>true</Enabled> <Username>custom</Username>      <Password> <Value>password</Value>
    <PlainText>true</PlainText></Password>
    <Domain>.</Domain>
    <LogonCount>999</LogonCount></AutoLogon>
So the question is what do we do with the domain part, we can't specify a pc name as it will change each time

You should be able to leave the domain as is. My guess is that you do not have the local account configured. Configuring a custom logon account is a two step process, the first being to create an account with the password you wish to have, and the second
step being to configure the information above with the custom account you've created.  Validate that the account exists under oobeSystem > UserAccounts>LocalAccounts. Hope this helps.

  • [SOLVED] After xorg-server update backlight is not behaving

After updating a Thinkpad S540 today the system goes into dim backlight level for the screen during the initial stages of the boot process, and recovers to normal brightness after the password has been entered in the KDM greeter and the user logs in to KDE. Running KDE the brightness behaves normally, but when the system shuts down after logging out from KDE the text output during shutdown does into very dim mode again.

Booting with kernel parameter systemd.restore_state=0 gives a normal brightness throughout. So this must have something to do with the saving of the brightness parameters by systemd. The clue is in the journal log above:
systemd-backlight[200]: Saved brightness 11 too low; increasing to 46.
I wonder how I can get systemd to reset the stored value which is too low to be sensible?
Has anyone seen similar behaviour and if so is there a proper fix instead of the workaround in the bug I have filed upstream as below?
    Filed arch bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/41390
    and upstream at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81884

@iskandr , @ens  about backlight and fn keys:
keys work (I checked by xmodmap) and backlight control works, but only by:
    /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
old scripts which used for example:
    /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    stopped works.
I wonder if this is a BUG or new feature? Where are handlers in clean Linux / systemd responsible for action to acpi keys which controlls backlight? ( I checked and it's not acpid /etc/acpi/handler.sh - acpi keys backlight controll works without it ). (moreover, acpid is external application as well as xbacklight, gbacklight etc... It should work OOTB, without these applications and also in the console.)
to turn on old interface as before 3.16 try add
    video.use_native_backlight=0
    to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line in /etc/default/grub  ( remember about grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg )
    it turns on old interface:
    ls -l /sys/class/backlight/
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 08-15 13:36 acpi_video0 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/backlight/acpi_video0
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 08-15 13:36 acpi_video1 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video1
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 08-15 13:36 intel_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/intel_backlight
and everything works again as before 3.16.

This is another BUG (also occurs to my laptop). I see that the code is ready, so wait for a fix update.
I wonder also whether and where to file a bug report (about fn keys + backlight control).

  • RD230 - Won't boot after BIOS - Server beeps and the screen is blank.

    Hi there,
I have a problem with one of our RD230.
The Server seems to be ok. No Errors in BIOS. SATA Raid configured and so on...
But the server simply won't boot from CD or USB Drive or HDD.
After the whole BIOS Process the server gives a permanent beep and the Digitron shows code 00. The Screen just shows a blinking cursor top left.
    Nothing happens.
Removing the RAID, CD Drive, Network Card doesn't help.
Does anyone have an Idea whats going on with this server?
Also setting the J45 Jumper doesn't help.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Cheers,
    Chris

2 Things that can typically fix this issue. Please reseat the memory and if that does not fix it, please reseat the processor.
    Questions
1 - Has this system worked prior to this or is this an out-of-box failure?
2 - If it has worked in the past, what changes were made just prior to this issue? (ie Windows Update, BIOS Update, firmware update, driver(s) update, etc.)

  • Software licensing service won't start after sql server upgrade

having issues with windows server 2008 sp2 64 bit OS where the software license service do not start. and see the server as not genuine.  when i run net start slsvc, I got a system error has occurred. system error 34 has occurred. the wrong diskette
is in the drive. insert *** (volume Serial Number: ***) into drive ***.
I try chkdsk and sfc/scannow. nothing seems to work.
    thank you for your help

    Hi,
Please try the steps below to resolve the issue:
1.net stop slsvc (select yes) in my case it was already stopped.
    2.in command prompt type:
    3.cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    4.rename the tokens.dat file: ren tokens.dat tokens.old
5.still in the command prompt type  cd %windir%\system32
    6.type net start slsvc
7.type cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (this may take a long time)
8.Then reboot the machine twice !!!
9.slmgr.vbs –ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (assuming you have a MAK key, not a KMS key)
10.To activate your OS, just type: slmgr.vbs –ato
If there any other error message?  You could refer to the article below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Kdemod, xorg-server 1.7.1.901-1 = slow kickof, dvb broken... [solved]

So the recent xorg update to 1.7.1.901-1 has caused some problems for me. The kickof menu in kde was extremly slow and dvbt stoped working, kaffeine not being able to tune to any channels anymore.
Searching in the forum I found out that the kickof menu broke due to the xorg update. It turned out, downgrading xorg fixed kickof and dvbt.
I described how to do that here
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=84294
and there is also the wiki source. I hope this saves somebody some time :-)
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dow … ges#How-To

But will kde be fixed anytime soon to handle the new xorg?  Or maybe kde is waiting for xorg to be fixed so that kde will still work .  It's annoying to have software components out of date.  Moreover  I hate having to waste brain cells to check if some package dependency will force xorg to be updated again.   After the recent upgrade  I first had no X at all.  I then had to reinstall the nvidia drivers,  but in the past I had used the nvidia shell script to do it because I wanted to try out their openCL drivers.
For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to uninstall the proprietary drivers and it wouldn't let me install nvidia under pacman.  I had to delete every conflicting file by hand (sigh).  I finally got arch's nvidia to install,  but kde will not start at all for me.   On boot kde hangs after the first disk drive icon and then a mouse click will send the screen to black.
So far the only solution offered is to downgrade xorg.  I'd prefer to run lxde for now until the wrinkles are worked out.  But even lxde has some odd windowing behavior now.  I use xmonad as my window manager and any window at the right edge of the screen has a defective scroll bar.  You'd think the xorg folks would have done some more testing with at the very least kde and gnome prior to release.
