KDE 4.3 vs KDEmod 4.3 (What is modularization)

Hi,
Ok first a newbie question. Have I understood correctly when I say that KDEmod is essentially a "modularized" version of KDE? If so what does "modularization" mean exactly? Does it mean that instead of installing everything KDE has to offer I can chose to keep things small and only add the "modules" I want and need?
Secondly I've heard that KDE 4.3 is going to be modularized. Is this correct? Won't this make KDEmod slightly redundant (except for tweeking for chakra live-cd)? Once KDE 4.3 is released should I remove KDEmod and just install KDE? Or should I just upgrade my current KDEmod?

Well, i dont see much competition here, because we have completely different goals. However, there are some things that shocked me a bit, but more down below.

Yes, thats the main reason. We just cannot provide the level of integration we want with the Arch packages, in our opinion a "desktop" LiveCD should feel like a desktop and we have very high standards regarding this integration. That starts with unofficial bugfixes for well-known KDE bugs and ends with our own patches for a "proper" default desktop, and of course our unofficial feature patches that we are doing for the fun of it.

No problem. But maybe you should change your mind a little bit, "external project" doesnt mean its completely unsupported. I dont know how people get this idea, especially when you consider for how long we are doing it now.

  • KDEmod=unstable? + What WM/DE would you reccomend for me

    Hi guys. I don't want to start a flame war, please.
    I am using Arch with KDEmod and I have the impression that this combination is a lot less stable than my previous Ubuntu+Gnome+Compiz (mind you, I am NOT running compiz on Arch anymore). I don't know if this is attributable to KDE or to KDEmod or to Arch - I am currently installing Gnome on Arch in order to check that.
    Anyways. Annoyed by the quirks of KDE (like random Konqueror crashes, improper handling of removable media, showing pop-ups like kdesu in the background etc.) I think it's high time I tried some lightweight WM. I've only used Gnome and Fluxbox for a long enough time to have an opinion on them - I am waiting for your opinions.
    What I am looking for:
    1) Simplicity - I'm fed of Gnome/KDE running a bazillion services I've never asked for and then randomly crashing them
    2) Beauty - what kept me from trying lightweight options so far was that they all seem to look plain ugly (judging from screenshots). I never managed to get my Fluxbox to look the way I wanted. Do you know any WMs with really good themes?
    3) Stability - compiz is not an option: no more crashes please!
    4) An elegant way to manage my open windows - I love the Expose effect but I am not sure if I can get it to work without compositing (actually I'm using the old and unmaintained Kompose to avoid compiz and still have that in my KDEmod). I also love docks (FYI: yes, I am a former Mac user ). I like avant-window-navigator, e.g., but it doesn't run without compositing (and the Arch package is a mess anyway - when I find the time to examine it I'll contact the maintainer).
    So: waiting for your opinions.

    Anyway. I've tried GNOME w/ Metacity. It's working pretty nice. I've always had the feeling that GNOME's way is the way to go, not KDE's: no bloat, no revolution, just steady improvement.
    Openbox is way to problematic - e.g., when I used the template autostart.sh Openbox would crash on every start. Sometimes the buttons in GTK apps were unusable.

    You don't know, so I'll tell you: it's stability I want. I really like the new technologies in KDE4 but I'm not a teenager using his computer to play (when I was I didn't care for stability). I need a reliable desktop experience. And I'm not using KDE4 until it stops crashing every 10 minutes.

  • Kde from extra or kdemod?

    I dont care about modularity...I just want to ask which is better,cause kdemod has some backports,etc....What do you think?

    I had a play with KDE4 both mod and stock arch installs. Neither booted any faster than the other. KDE mod had the better default install IMO, all the junk supplied in the stock arch one is a bit overwhelming. Also KDE mod has binary packages of Amarok-svn and K3B svn if your into eithe of those.
    Otherwise the real differences were minimal, both installed and ran, neither had any obviously stupid defaults. In anycase I tried out KDE4.2 (beta stuff) and it still was not anywhere near a full desktop solution, its just too pieced together for my liking at the moment. I definately prefer it to gnome now though, and will probably give it another try in a year or so when its all stabilized (plenty of crashes in both kdemod/stock on the 4.1.3 build, and the beta is even worse of course).
    If I had to recommend either I would say KDEmod.

  • KDE from Arch v KDEmod

    Now that Arch splits KDE packages, what advantages are there to using KDEmod? For me it was always about being modular but now I can do that with Arch itself...

    I'm honestly not sure-but I can spot a few.  I never could get KDEMod to do some of the default theming things I was seeing with KDE.  KDEMod4 always had very flat colors, and not gradients like I'd often see in screenshots. I figured it was just my monitor...After I went back to Vanilla KDE, nope it was the patched version of Qt or the patches applied to KDE for KDEMod.  Extra-KDE does it fine.

  • KDE 4 or Gnome 3?

    Hi,
    On my current Archlinux desktop, I'm using KDE 3.5 (called KDEMod or Trinity). However, the fact that this doesn't come from the official Arch repositories sometimes DOES give problems with pacman upgrades, so for a next PC on which I'll install Arch, I'm thinking maybe I should choose a desktop which is officially supported again.
    So that would be Gnome 3 or KDE 4 I guess...
    Let me first of all tell  you that I absolutely DISLIKE KDE 4. Everything that was fantastic about KDE 3.5, they have destroyed and made annoying in KDE 4, and on top of that they've made it very unstable too. So I really, really, really dislike KDE 4.
    I have used Gnome 2.3 a few times and find it ok-ish. I have never tried Gnome 3, but heard that it has also got some controversies so maybe they've also totally screwed it up like has happened to KDE 4.
    Which do you think I should pick? Gnome 3 or KDE 4?
    Things I find important are:
    -easy to create launcher icons in the taskbar which you can easily give an icon, a command, ...
    -easy to use interface in file manager that doesn't get in your way by such things as auto scrolling trees, inability to drag rectangle around files to select them, ...
    -ability to place multiple taskbars at the bottom above each other (e.g. one full of launcher buttons, another for the buttons of open windows, ...)
    -"open terminal here" option in file manager
    -good looks
    -stable, never lose/reset your settings, don't crash, no unpleasant surprises after a reboot, no graphical glitches
    -no background processes that cause unwanted constant high cpu usages with weird names like "virtuoso" or whatever which you totally don't care about and didn't ask for but still eat your CPU
    -ability to navigate in compressed files in the file manager as if they were directories, and to just drag files or directories inside the compressed file, to other directories in your file manager which automatically uncompresses that part (and especially NOT a utility called "Ark" which has been broken for over 5 years and always wants to uncompress to a fixed, wrong, directory)
    -small fonts, buttons, icons, etc... in the interface, even at a resolution of 1920x1200 I prefer small things so that there is lots of room
    -no unexpected things that happen if you move your mouse, like suddenly the desktop going to some "overview" state if you put the mouse pointer in a certain corner of the screen
    -customizability
    -well supported
    -be mainly a DESKTOP, not an application suite, so that a new version number means that there has actually improved something to the desktop, not just some random things happened to some application and the desktop usability further deteriorates.
    KDE 3.5 has all of the above except the "good looks" and "well supported". KDE 4 has none of the above but has the good looks and support. Gnome 3, I don't know yet!

    On the "no minimise/maximise buttons": Gnome only displays a "close" button by default, but it's very easy to get minimise/maximise buttons back.
    In general, Gnome Shell tries to remove visual clutter and unnecessary distractions... this includes easily discoverable settings. Quite a few things can be tweaked, but much of it is annoying to access and you get the impression the designers would like you to use the thing "as is".
    "Good-looking" is very subjective... imo it shouldn't be a real problem. Gnome3 and Unity look acceptable by default imo, everything else not shooting for extreme minimalism is easily themeable. The only one that always looks tacky to me is KDE (hard-to-escape clutter because it likes to shove its turgid throbbing configurability in your face, the opposite extreme from Gnome).
    Generally, most of your points are about how you set it up than what DE you use. Your stability requirements and being "mostly a DE, not an application suite" would call for a lightweight option. You find KDE4 annoying and don't seem to fall into Gnome's target group.
    XFCE is a compromise of out-of-the-box functionality and being modular enough that you can easily replace bits that annoy you. If you're willing to learn fiddly but powerful and open-ended configuration syntax, FVWM does a lot of stuff without the need for external tools and is extremely stable. But you pretty much have to be willing to do extensive tweaking - the default setup is about 20 years out of date.

  • Kde4 or kdemod 4?

    I always used kdemod 3, until kde 4 came out, it was too buggy for me, and I've been working in gnome ever since. I'm ready to go to kde 4.2, it seems as if kde 4.2 and kdemod 4.2 are so very similar? Can anyone enlighten me on the differences, and opinions?

    Just as a tiny piece of counterpoint to most of these responses --
    kdemod4.2 on my Arch64 system was continuously losing my settings regarding widget (plasmoid) placement, configuration, and status(deleted plasmoids would come back, added plasmoids would vanish on logout/login), as well as wallpaper.  I struggled with reconfiguring my desktop once or more per day while trying various advice from this forum and elsewhere regarding deleting config files, checking permission settings, and etc.  The problem was sporadic, and sometimes I'd think I had it fixed only for it to come back.
    At least one thread at the chakra forums seemed to indicate that I was not the only one with this issue, and it seemed limited to 64bit users -- I'm not claiming this as evidence of a widespread problem or even that it was the "fault" of kdemod devs/packagers, I'm just telling you what I know.
    In any case, I uninstalled it and replaced it with kde4.2 vanilla from the Arch repos, and the problem vanished.  I've also not noticed any significant differences in appearance, functionality, or speed due to making this switch, though I acknowledge that there are likely changes I'm not aware of.
    So while I'm sure kdemod is fine for just about everyone, having tried both back to back I really wouldn't know the difference were it not for the chakra branding being gone.

  • [SOLVED] KDE 4.3 Composite with ATI Radeon X1600 Series

    I'm new to Archlinux (and don't have too much experience on Linux) and searched everywhere in this forum and on Google but couldn't find out how to solve my problem.
    I'm using Archlinux x86_64... my video card is an ATI Radeon X1650 Pro (pretty old) and I can't enable Composite on KDE 4.3 (not KDEMod) to enable transparency and some animation, using OpenGL (with XRender it works, but it also gets extremely slow...)

  • What do you use to make Gnome apps look good in KDE4?

    What are you all using to make Gnome apps (like Firefox, Gimp, Inkscape.. etc) look good in KDE (I am using KDEmod).
    I tried Qtcurve (I think it works the best), gtk-qt-engine (for some reason it didn't seem to work for me) and others...
    I want to hear opinion from other people (who use KDE or possibly KDEmod) and who are probably using Arch longer than me. This is my first successful Arch install.

  • Need help with dual monitor setup for KDE 3.5.5.

    Here's my hardware:
    NEC MultiSync LCD 1530V:  1024x768 (analog)
    Samsung SyncMaster 941BW: 1440x900 (digital)
    nVidia Dual head AGP video card.
    The dual monitor works under dual-boot Windows, boot up and pure Linux console.  I've googled around for help, changed my xorg.conf file accordingly to some sites, but it wasn't much help.

    Thanks for your help guys, I'm halfway there.
    The second monitor shows the KDE desktop, but it isn't exactly what I expected.  Right now, both monitors display at 1024x768 (each) or 2048x768 (total).  The larger monitor stretches and distorts the display of 1024x768 to its natural resolution at 1440x900 and it isn't what I wanted.  Other than that, the dual desktop setup behaves what I expected to.

  • [SOLVED] xserver 1.5 and KDE 4 keymaps - strange behavior

    I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I have read every thread about this I can find, and the wiki page, and I can't find a solution.
    I use a standard US keyboard (it's a laptop), but with the Dvorak keymap.  Most things work fine, except for any Ctrl-Alt combinations.  For example, ctrl-alt-left is detected as D.   ctrl-alt-right is C,  ctrl-alt-up is A, and ctrl-alt-down is B.  These are my shortcuts for switching desktops, so I use them constantly.  The Windows key works perfectly, as do ctrl-shift sequences.
    There's no problem in the VTs, and in xev, all the keys are detected normally.  I've also discovered that I can temporarily fix the problem by going into system settings, unsetting a shortcut, than resetting it, but this only lasts for that one session.  The next time I start KDE, the problem returns.   
    I have removed my input devices from xorg.conf after upgrading to xserver 1.5, and in KDE system settings I've set it to Evdev-managed keyboard, with the us map and dvorak variant.  My /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi is as follows:

    I don't think this is a bug in KDE, as this fixed a problem I was having with xmodmap on Openbox.
    If I used xmodmap to remap my Caps Lock key to Ctrl in my openbox startup scripts, odd things happen to my keymap (Super key stops working, left arrow key stops repeating, etc).  Running setxkbmap before xmodmap seems to fix everything.

  • VLC crashes on KDE

    So i've had this problem for a while and i'm assuming it's Qt related.
    Whenever i open VLC and click open > file or directory, it hangs, and i have to force close it. I've tried --reset-config and i've also tried numerous versions from the aur, including GIT, SVN & Phonon. All of them have the same problem. I also tried running it as another user but still had the issue.
    When i run it from the terminal, i don't get any error messages.
    So last night i decided to try E17 for fun, and tried vlc in there and it worked perfectly. I've searched and searched about this and couldn't find anything. So this is my last resort, anybody got any ideas?
    Btw, i'm using KDE 4.3, not kdemod.

    Yeah i was gonna check it out. I had been using smplayer instead, and think it's actually better than vlc, but vsync doesn't work for some reason.
    Edit: Hmmm, doesn't seem like it's limited to VLC either. Virtualbox is doing the same thing when i try to mount an iso

  • Cdemu issues (again), this time with KDE Device Notifier

    OK, so I'm having trouble with cdemu again. This time it's not about mounting an image, but getting rid of it
    Essentially, when I load an image with the cdemu client, KDE Device Notifier immediately recognises it as an inserted optical media... which is cool.
    However, when I try to unload it with cdemu, it stays "stuck" in KDE Device Notifier, and I can't access any other image which I mount via cdemu afterwards.
    In other words, I do the following...
    cdemu load 0 <name>.iso
    The image appears to be successfully loaded, and I can access it's contents with no trouble at all. KDE Device Notifier sees it normally, can mount it and open it in Dolphin.
    Then, when I'm done with it, I do the following...
    cdemu unload 0
    This apparently unloads the image, as I can't open it in Dolphin anymore (or any other application within KDE), but KDE Device Notifier still sees it as if the "optical drive" is inserted, and it won't go away. If I try loading another image in cdemu, KDE will still see the previous one, and I won't be able to do anything with it.
    I cannot mount or unmount it, I cannot open it in Dolphin or any other application (obviously, because the image isn't mounted anymore), but KDE Device Notifier still insists that it's there, and won't let me access any other image mounted via cdemu.
    Since I have very little experience with cdemu and KDE's logs, I don't know what else I should post here, or where to find it...
    Any advice or idea would be much appreciated. TIA!

    Today the issue disappeared!
    I don't understand, yesterday I spent my whole afternoon trying to find why it was not recognised, I rebooted a few times without any luck. In the evening I still had a cdemu iso mounted and left my laptop in "suspend to ram" state, and this morning as soon as I wake from suspend to ram I have a notification from device notifier that my iso is available! I tried to unmount / mount and reboot then mount / unmount, it now works fine...
    So it seems the issue fixed itself... Don't know how though..
    And the new version of kde-cdemu-manager works fine as well.

    The effect looks entirely like a bad bug: it just makes an ugly running blotch it a corner of the screen which overloads CPU and makes the desktop generally unusable. I wonder if I'm missing something, as the effect persists through I can't remember how many KDE releases.
    On the other hand, people keep on reporting KDE performance in terms of FPS. What's the right way to check FPS?

    mesa package contains glxgears utility
    $ glxgears
    pipes into console some moderately useful output, notably FPS every 5 seconds. Better than nothing, granted. Is it the best way to check my DE performance?

  • [Solved] Intel full screen scaling in KDE

    I can't seem to change the full screen scale on my intel onboard card with KDE. The instruction on the Intel Arch Wiki only works in Gnome.

    That's because dragonplayer scales the video to your screen's native resolution. This option matters when you're running something with a lower resolution that the screen's native. Though I don't see why KDE vs. Gnome vs. anything would matter here. Unless KDE is being stubborn and is overriding what you set on the commandline. For me that would be one further reason to move away from KDE.
