[KDE 4.6.3] [nvidia 275.09.07-1] Kwin crash - No desktop effects

Hi all,
To remove the bug "Konsole crash", I updated nvidia drivers to 275.09.07.
Now, Kwin crashes with : Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Segmentation fault.
No problem when desktop effects are disabled.
Has anyone had the same problem?
Thanx

  • [Solved - KDE 4.6] No desktop effects, but still have 3D render

I have an nvidia graphics card, with the nvidia binary driver installed, and everything worked smoothly, until I updated to Kde4.6 just now. After a few seconds where everything looked normal (desktop effects enabled just as before), the screen went beserk, and a popup informed me that the desktop effects were too slow, and thus have been deactivated. Without those effects, everything works fine. If I try to re-enable them in System Settings, it now tells it can't, it will revert to previous configuration, and should try to see what's wrong with my Xorg settings. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, but still, here is what I think is the relevant part:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName "GeForce 9500 GT"

    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    Help, ideas, anyone?
    Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I restarted X, and then was able to enable desktop effects again, and so I did. And I just discovered how to trigger the "beserkness": just press Alt-Tab repeatedly. I will show a transparent preview of the window, and then all of a sudden, it freezes for a moment, then comes back, but way way slow...

I've been able to narrow it down even further: it appears that the crash happens when the effect for window switching is box switch. I changed it to Cover Switch, and everything is working properly. I haven't tried any others, for obvious reasons, but should anyone else have the same problem, here's a hint to a possible solution. Anyway, I'm closing this, and probably submit a bug to the KDE folks...

  • XBMC/mplayer and KDE Desktop effects

    Hi,
i have setup a arch based HTPC with XBMC on top of KDE, but there is one thing i were not able to resolve: The XBMC GUI and playing a video on it gets laggy as soon as i DISABLE the kde desktop effects. My system is i3/sandy bridge based with integrated intel graphics, vaapi installed.
    1. tried different playback settings within XBMC, same results
    2. as soon as i disable the kde desktop effects, xbmc becomes slow and laggy, even if i dont restart it, if i enable desktop effects its smooth again
    3. mplayer reacts the same way when used with -vo gl or -vo gl2, so it could be somehow opengl related. With -vo xv it runs smooth in both configurations.
    4. Cpu load is constantly <20%
    5. tried as root user, same results
    6. glxinfo reports direct rendering is enabled
so any ideas how to resolve that problem? or how to find out whats going on?
you may ask why i want to disable desktop effects, well with desktop effects on, videos run almost perfect, but sometimes there are smaller lags that, i guess, can be related to the desktop effects eating resources, so i want to try without them.
here is the custom part of my xorg config, tearfree was needet to get a vsync-enabled video playback:
    #20-intel.conf
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    Option "TearFree" "true"
    #Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
    #Option "AccelMethod" "xaa"
    EndSection
    Section "dri"

Security vulnerability CVE-2012-0946 in the NVIDIA UNIX driver was disclosed to NVIDIA on March 20th, 2012. The vulnerability makes it possible for an attacker who has read and write access to the GPU device nodes to reconfigure GPUs to gain access to arbitrary system memory. NVIDIA is not aware of any reports of this vulnerability, outside of the disclosure which was made privately to NVIDIA.

  • [solved] KDE 4.6: no desktop effects

Since I upgraded to KDE 4.6, i can't enable desktop effects any more. When I open the desktop effects settings, it says that it can't enable desktop effects because of the following reason, but there is no reason given. (The box below to enable the effects is checked, but disabled. It also says that the desktop effects are disabled temporary.)
I'm using a nvidia graphics card 9600 GT with the current nvidia driver.
Does anyone know what could be the reason for that behavior or does anyone have the same problems?

I also had this problem a few weeks ago with KDE 4.5... You have to edit your kwinrc (.kde4/share/config/) . You have to change these parameter to the following values:
    CheckIsSafe=false
    DisableChecks=true
    OpenGLIsUnsafe=false
I got this information from the KWin developer. Hope this works for you!

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
"For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
Desktop effect system is not running."
For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted
    Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
To enable execution of this file add
    add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.19-gdb.py
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
To completely disable this security protection add
    set auto-load safe-path /
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
For more information about this security protection see the
"Auto-loading safe path" section in the GDB manual. E.g., run from the shell:
    info "(gdb)Auto-loading safe path"

  • [SOLVED] Just installed KDE 4.6, desktop effects don't work.

When I try to enable KDE's desktop effects the screen goes haywire and everything is black with nasty distorted lines. Then everything returns after a little while and KDE shows a popup notification saying that "desktop effects were too slow and have been suspended...".
I'm pretty sure my xorg.conf is configured perfectly, I've read everything there is to know about that. I was previously on Gnome with Compiz working flawlessly, so I have a feeling its not a video problem. There's always a small chance I could be wrong though.
Could it be a video driver problem? If so, what should I do about that?
Any idea what might be wrong?

I'm using xf86-video-ati with my ATI card.
I initially tried Gnome, but for some reason, gnome-shell just wouldn't start, so that why I ended up trying KDE. Once in KDE, i had this described problem.I couldn't fix it, and it was crashing (100% CPU usage sometimes), so I switched back to Gnome 3 to attempt to get the shell running. Finally, I figured out that you must not add "nomodeset" to the kernel boot line in order for gnome-shell to work, so I removed that from the end of my line and gnome-shell worked!
It might be possible that this is the solution for the KDE graphic problem as well... I'm testing it right now, i'll be back to post it after the restart...

  • Slow desktop effects: Nvidia, Firefox and Thunderbird

This has been bugging me for years and after lots of search I couldn't find a solution.  When compositing is enabled either using Compiz or Gnome Shell or even XFWM, desktop effects become slow and choppy when Firefox or Thunderbird are the active windows.  This is true also when there's another window is active on top of a visible FF or TB.  However the problem happens only when either FF or TB is maximised --no problem when they are not maximised.  By “desktop effects” I mean Compiz effects like switching to another workspace using the "desktop wall" or the "Scale addon" or going to "overview" mode in Gnome Shell.
Right now I'm using the proprietary driver version 295.49 running on a 64bit 3.3.6 kernel on a Thinkpad T61.  The problem persists across XFCE+Compiz (my current DE), Gnome Shell  and KDE sessions.
I'd really appreciate any hint/tip on how to solve this.  TIA,
    Bahman
PS:  My card is a "Quadro NVS 140m" and I've set the PowerMizer to always run at "Prefer Maximum Performance" mode.

  • Poor performance when using kde desktop effect

    Hey,
I'm having trouble when using kde effet (system settings -> desktop -> desktop effects).
I have a dual core E5200 3 ghz, 2 GB memory pc8500 and an HD4850 using fglrx driver, but I got incredible bad performance when using desktop effect and watching video, I can barely watch a 800x600 video in full screen mode without having bad performance, X getting up to 40% cpu usage.
Its really like my graphic card isnt handling the rendering stuff but 3D acceleration is working, I can play 3D game without problem so far (as long as the deskstop effect arent enabled cause the cpu have like a hard time handling both for recent game)
So I guess its some trouble with 2D acceleration or something like that, I read that some people had such issue, but I didnt figure a way to fix it.

  • [SOLVED] KDE buggy desktop effects in OpenGL

Hello, I've been using gnome as my desktop environment for a while now and I decided to give KDE a try once again, but I'm having some issues.
    Everything was perfect:
    http://i42.tinypic.com/14l1x8p.jpg
But I noticed that whenever I snap a window to any side of the screen and the stretching effect is displayed this happens:
    http://i44.tinypic.com/dm9oyg.png
And If I go back to a small window:
    http://i40.tinypic.com/104p15i.png
Now, as soon as I click elsewhere those black/invisible boxes are gone.
As you can see I checked under system settings >> desktop effects >> advanced and, if I change the Compositing Type to Xrenderer the problems are gone, but as you can imagine that is not ideal, this ONLY happens when I select ANY version of OpenGL as the Compositing Type.
I use the proprietary AMD drivers for my HD 6770, I think this problem might have something to do with that.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • [SOLVED] NO desktop effects in KDE 4.7.0 with OpenGL as backend

    Hey all,
After upgrading from KDE 4.7 RC2 (4.6.95) to 4.7.0, Kwin desktop effects work no more (with OpenGL as backend). I tried upgrading catalyst from 11.6 to 11.7, removing all Kwin related config files and even a new user, but nothing changed. I'm using kdebase-workspace 4.7.0-3 from [kde-unstable] repo. Should I wait for an update, install kdebase-workspace from testing repo or what?

You are using a version with OpenGL ES enabled. But this doesn't seem to work with ATI cards.
At least not with Catalyst: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 53#p966953 looks like radeon works.
Use kdebase-workspace 4.7.0-2 from testing instead.

  • Kde screen resolution with nvidia driver

    Hi,
I am completely new to ArchLinux.  I really enjoyed installing it and its a hoot to play around with!
I am having a problem getting the screen resolution to work well with the monitor and the resolution with KDE 4.3.  I found that by changing the resolution to 1024x768 and changing the refresh rate to 53 or 54hz, the fonts that otherwise display horribly with the nvidia driver and installed nvidia card will suddenly become beautiful.  I went to Kmenu, Settings, then display settings, and changed the configuration, and everything worked great.
But on next boot up after I have shut down the computer, X doesn't remember these settings and the fonts look terrible again.  If I open the kmenu again and look at the display settings, they are still set at 1024x768 and 54 hz.  Once I have looked at them, the screen on the monitor goes dark for a second.  Then the computer knows that I want those settings without me changing anything, and adjusts to them without having to hit the apply button.  Then the fonts look great again.
How can I get the display to start with those settings?  I have tried several configurations of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file without success, so I need some help.
    Thanks

I know some time back using nvidia driver with my particular monitor, i had to tell it what resolution/refresh rate to use by default or else X would make a poor choice as to what it wanted the default to be (put me in 800x600 or something like that  by default).  I was able to tell X to default to what I wanted by adding in a Metamode line in my xorg.conf, i think under the screen section. I'm out right now and won't be back to my box to look up exactly what I did, but hopefully this might give a starting point if you havent tried it already.  Metamodes in xorg.conf under the Display section if i remember right.  I specified a resolution there and it now uses that as the default.

  • KDE: Show FPS desktop effect

    Hi,
The effect looks entirely like a bad bug: it just makes an ugly running blotch it a corner of the screen which overloads CPU and makes the desktop generally unusable. I wonder if I'm missing something, as the effect persists through I can't remember how many KDE releases.
On the other hand, people keep on reporting KDE performance in terms of FPS. What's the right way to check FPS?

    mesa package contains glxgears utility
    $ glxgears
pipes into console some moderately useful output, notably FPS every 5 seconds. Better than nothing, granted. Is it the best way to check my DE performance?

  • CS5, 10.6.4, Nvidia 10.6.3 extensions, No Crash

I though I should post this in it's own thread so you can find it instead of the one I buried in another thread yesterday
Yesterday I replaced the 10.6.4 Nvidia drivers with the drivers from 10.6.3.
    NVDANV50Hal.kext
    NVDANV40Hal.kext
    NVDAResman.kext
    GeForce.kext
    GeForceVADriver.bundle
    GeForceGLDriver.bundle
    GeForce7xxxGLDriver.bundle
    GeForceGA.plugin
    Extensions/NVSMU.kext
So far after about 8 hours of processing images I haven't had any crashes in CS5 running 64bit mode. Before the extension replace about every 10 images or so I would get the screen flicker and total computer freeze. All preference settings in CS5 were exactly the same as before with the total freeze.
I did not clean caches or remove any fonts, only repaired permissions after doing the extension replace. I simple mounted the dmg backup image from 10.6.3 and replaced the files listed above. You should save these files from 10.6.4 first in case you want to restore them.
A word of caution, I would not try this on a computer without another available boot partition as you really need to be booted into another partition to replace the extensions. And if anything goes wrong you can easily restore the 10.6.4 extensions.

No problem yet and I just got done working with 2 multilayered psd files with type layers. Really stable and snappy since the 10.6.3 extensions were put into 10.6.4.
Are you  sure your problems are not font related. I don't why Apple keeps insisting on shipping and installing with every update, bad fonts. Maybe to make Adobe look bad?
I would strip every font out in the Library/Fonts and System/Library/Fonts folders that the OS will allow. That is what I always do after every OS update and I have had no trouble with CS4 either. Always clean font caches and reboot when you do this.

I realized all the graphics cards have cuda cores, the gtx 650 2 gb isnt on the list but it has 384 cuda cores?
    Is it compatible?

If it's not on the system requirements list, then After Effects won't use it for GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer. Read this page for details about what this means:
