Kde 4 breaks kde 3

i installed kde 3.5.10 and all was excellent
i then installed kde 4.X in parallel and it broke some kde 3 apps
i figured out the cause - for some reason kde 3 apps use the config files and profiles etc from /usr/. . . . - which belong to kde 4. it ignores his own files in /opt/kde / . .
how can i set up kde 3 to look in his own files and not mess up with kde 4 ?

my purpose is using each desktop fully and in addition have apps from the other desktop. not just some kde 3 apps on kde 4
i dont like kdemod
is PATH related ? it does find the executables. its just that they look into the wrong folder for configs
how do i change this default ?

  • KDE or KDE-META?

    Hi!
    I'm at the point of installing the GUI, KDE4 for instance, and I'm curious about what veteran Arch-KDE4 users can tell me about this. I read about the two KDE and KDE-META and I wonder which will be the best to have an up-to-date and/or stable KDE4.
    Also, in my last attempt to install Arch (this is my second time doing a Arch install, I haven't any system up and working yet but I'm starting feeling a seasoned Arch user, lol) I remember installing plain KDE installed a LOT of applications and games I would not want because KDE package installs whole KDE suite.
    Alongside kdebase and kdeutils (or kde-meta-kdebase and kde-meta-kdeutils) which other packages should I install to have a full working base but complete KDE4 system, like say Kubuntu? (sorry but's the only KDE I liked after trying Fedora's and openSUSE's KDE implementation)
    I'm talking about a complete KDE system with printer support and so on, I'm not talking about applications which I can add individually.

    hi Pierre!
    I did read the wiki and that's why I was in doubt on which package should I install.
    I see you are a KDeveloper? I'm very grateful of the KDE Team work. I like other DE too and all have their pros and cons, but KDE is the only environment that put it all together in a way I find useful and beautiful and that free me to just work and enjoy my PC experience instead spending lot of time customizing and tweaking my system.
    Thanks both for your advice here and your KDE work, best.

    New applications in this release: kdenlive, telepathy-kde
    Ported to KF5 in this release:
    - kdeadmin: kcron
    - kdeedu: blinken, cantor, kbruch, kgeography, kiten klettres, kmplot, kstars, kturtle, kwordquiz, rocs, step
    - kdegames: bomber, bovo, granatier, kapman, katomic, kblackbox, kblocks, kbounce, kbreakout, kdiamond, kfourinline, killbots, kjumpingcube, klines, kmines, knetwalk, kollision, kpatience, kshisen, ksquares
    - kdegraphics: kruler
    - kdesdk: kompare, lokalize
    - kdeutils: filelight, kcalc, kcharselect, ktimer, print-manager
    - kdetoys: kteatime
    Please report packaging issues to bugs.archlinux.org (using [kde-unstable] in the description), upsteam issues to bugs.kde.org
    Known packaging issues:
    - cantor is missing, compilation fails at the moment
    - kdeartwork is not packaged, it's mostly stuff for KDE4 which hasn't been updated for years. Same for kde-wallpapers, kde-base-artwork.
    - l10n packages are not available, so new KF5 apps will not be translated
    - rocs depends on grantlee-qt5, which conflicts with grantlee-qt4, so currently can't be coinstalled with some KDE4 apps such as kdepim, kdevelop or skrooge. Hopefully will be fixed before the final release.

    No. Both: Dolphin and all KDE-Baseapps will be in 15.08.
    Personally I use dolphin-git version (from AUR) and it works pretty well. It depends only on baloo-widgets from git (and AUR). The all other dependencies are in repositories.
    I was going to try this but following the baloo-git dependency, it seems to depend on a lot of git versions
    I've just modified PKGBUILD of baloo-widgets-git:
    # Contributor: Andrea Scarpino <[email protected]>
    pkgname=baloo-widgets-git
    pkgver=r408.ebfa75c
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="A framework for searching and managing metadata"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    url='https://projects.kde.org/projects/kde/kdelibs/baloo'
    license=('LGPL')
    depends=('baloo-frameworks')
    makedepends=('extra-cmake-modules' 'git' 'kdoctools')
    source=('git://anongit.kde.org/baloo-widgets')
    replaces=('baloo-widgets-frameworks-git')
    md5sums=('SKIP')
    pkgver() {
    cd baloo-widgets
    printf "r%s.%s" "$(git rev-list --count HEAD)" "$(git rev-parse --short HEAD)"
    prepare() {
    mkdir -p build
    build() {
    cd build
    cmake ../baloo-widgets \
    -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release \
    -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr \
    -DLIB_INSTALL_DIR=lib
    make
    package() {
    cd build
    make DESTDIR="${pkgdir}" install
    It depends only on stable baloo-frameworks and... so on, it works.
    Then build and install this baloo-widgets-git before dolphin-git, and after that install dolphin-git from AUR. This solutions is for those from us, who want to use baloo with dolphin.

    Well it's weird. I left my computer for a while (and turned id down). After booting, KDE still tell me that it can't find my sound chipset and ask if It should definitively forget it. As I currently listen to some music with firefox, my bet is on a "working sound system with a KDE issue". I'm investigating this issue.

  • [kde-unstable] KDE SC 4.9

    Hi all,
    the first beta of the 4.9 series has been released.
    As usual, you find the kde packages in the [kde-unstable] repo, which only contains major beta release.
    Read install instruction from here.
    NOTE: It requires [testing] enabled.
    kde-multimedia has been split, so there's no kdemultimedia-kioslave in 4.9, instead you find:
    - kdemultimedia-audiocd-kio
    - libkcddb
    - libkcompactdisc
    Packagers should update their deps when 4.9 hits [extra]. In the meantime, this is a list of the packages that need to be rebuilt if you enable [kde-unstable]:
    - k3b (replace kioslave with libkcddb to depends)
    - audex (replace kioslave with libkcddb, libkcompactdisc to depends)
    - kaudiocreator (replace kioslave with libkcddb, libkcompactdisc to depends)
    - soundkonverter (replace kioslave with libkcddb to depends)
    - tellico (replace kioslave with libkcddb to depends)
    Also, there are:
    - a new kdebase-runtime dependence: nepomuk-core
    - a new game in kdeedu: kdeedu-pairs
    - a new kdebase-workspace dependence: kde-base-artwork
    - a new runner: kdeplasma-addons-runners-bing
    kdesdk-kdeaccounts-plugin, kdesdk-kdepalettes, kdeutils-ksecrets have been removed from the KDE SC.
    Please report any bug to our bug tracker[4] for any packaging bug.

    Confirmed: "Workspace Appearance" in system settings crushing if qtcurve-kde4 is installed. I don't understand what's that multi lib is all about though - qtcurve is in community repo.
    yep, same here, thanks for finding out!

  • KDE 4/KDE 5 (Plasma 5) rewrite

    Some work has started on a KDE 4/ Plasma 5 / Plasma rewrite. The reason I personally got involved was that I found the information (particularly about Plasma 5) slightly unclear and confusing as to what was "KDE 5" specific, KDE 4 specific and generally valid. You will find information on the KDE wiki discussion page and at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Chazza/KDE.
    This is not intended as spamming a new Wiki rewrite for comments, but as KDE is such a  widely used environment, comments on writing it before commiting to it would be very welcome. Thus, comments are invited.

    Hm, the "desktop widgets" locker isn't really thought through I think. You have to configure it like you would configure a standard plasma desktop, but it seems you can't resize the plasmoids and you have to do it without a window manager... So some text inputs like the city chooser from the weather plasmoid don't work. Also, the folder view for choosing the "dia show" folder is broken, half-transparent white until you right click on the correct spot.
    If you forget to lock the widgets on your lock screen it is trivial for someone to find a file chooser and do arbitrarily evil stuff. Also, if any of the plasmoids allows to open a file chooser you loose to. Also, if you use the "dia show" background people just need to right click and they can open a folder view. Also, if you click switch user, the login mask just gets kind of flat and wide and is impossible to recover (I'm even using kdm!).
    Killing plasma and kwin recovers your ability to unlock (+1 because even if plasma and kwin crashes the lock screen is still there) but with compositing kwin is at the moment seriously broken, won't let me switch windows correctly and moving windows kind of hangs. I think I need to restart X now...
    Nice idea but for a beta it is pretty poorly implemented I think. Feels more like a concept demo.

  • [kde-unstable] KDE SC 4.13

    Hi all,
    it's again time for a new major release of KDE Software Compilation.
    The first beta of the 4.13 series has been released.
    As usual, you find the packages in the [kde-unstable] repo, which only contains beta/rc releases.
    Read install instruction from here.
    NOTE: It requires [testing] enabled.
    The following packages have been added:
    * kfilemetadata
    * baloo
    * baloo-widgets
    * kdeedu-artikulate
    * kqtquickcharts
    KDE is migrating from Nepomuk to Baloo, because of this, I built KDE without Nepomuk support.
    Dolphin, KDEPIM and Gwenview have already been ported to Baloo. It seems that KActivities will not be ported away from Nepomuk in those 4.x releases.
    Amarok, KDE-Telepathy, Digikam and more still use Nepomuk, but future releases will not. You can take a look to this list.
    Please report any packaging bug to our bug tracker.
    KDE bugs go in the upstream bug tracker.
    Have a nice update and testing!
    Watch the list of known issues.

    Until recently veromix worked fine but now it doesn't. I think this is the problem:
    File "/usr/share/apps/plasma_scriptengine_python/pyappletscript.py", line 22, in <module>
    from PyKDE4.plasma import Plasma
    RuntimeError: the sip module implements API v11.0 but the PyKDE4.plasma module requires API v10.1
    According to their changelog they changed it for their sip v4.15.5 release http://www.riverbankcomputing.com/stati … /ChangeLog
    Downgrading sip, python2-sip and python-sip to [extra] brings this:
    File "/usr/share/apps/plasma_scriptengine_python/pyappletscript.py", line 20, in <module>
    from PyQt4.QtCore import *
    RuntimeError: the sip module implements API v10.0 to v10.1 but the PyQt4.QtCore module requires API v11.0
    so I guess PyKDE is just lagging behind and everyone else is already using the new thing?
    edit: Maybe they made a mistake with their release tarball? I have not tested it, but I got the PKGBUILD from here: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … e/PKGBUILD and made it build from the kde 4.13 branch of their git repository and it works: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=rdjEJ9tU
    Well, except for
    Error connecting to veromix-service:
    org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.veromix.pulseaudio.qt exited with status 1
    But maybe that solves itself after the next kde restart.
    edit2: It didn't.
    For some reason it doesn't launch some dbus service foobar.
    python2 /usr/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids/veromix-plasmoid/dbus-service/veromix-service-qt.py
    Then it works.
    Also, in the last kde update the former issue with pykde got solved I think.

    Before upgrading, I was using 4.10.4 with desktop effects enabled (OpenGL 2/Native). After upgrading, only the mouse cursor was displayed and the whole screen is black. There were ghost-like menu animations if I click on the supposed area of the kickoff launcher or hidden notifications. Had to manually killed startkde in a virtual console and select failsafe mode to successfully load the desktop.

  • [SOLVED] KDE Plasma 5 | Lock Screen Issues

    Everytime my computer locks - whether it be manually or automaticly, I get this lock menu with 3 options. The first option has my username and my avatar, which prompts me for my password. Everytime I type in the correct password, the screen turns black and then reloads the lock screen. Which makes it impossible for me to log back into my session leaving me unable to leave my computer on ever. I can create a new Session from the same menu but when ever I do create a new Session after being locked out, not a single app will launch. And I know I am putting in the correct password because when I purposly put in an incorrect password; the screen doesn't turn black, it just gives me a diffrent prompt. Another issue I am facing with KDE at the moment is about 80% of the time when I shut down my computer, I get a crash report from most of the applications running, for expamle kwin. I'm only saying this incase it is relevant, it is annoying but at least it doesn't prevent me from getting work done. Also, I used KDE's suggested SDDM for login.

    Oh, that really sucks, I like to use Arch for gaming on Linux so i dont think either of those sound preferable, but I think I will just try to downgrade nvidia then. Gnome atcually has worse issues with the latest nvidia drivers which sucks as well. Thank you for finding this.

  • Removing gnome or KDE

    Hi,
    I've been working on a laptop the last week or so.  Arch works really well on this one.  It's about 5 years old (no USB ports if that give you an idea :-) )  I'm able load only what I need.
    At any rate, while experimenting, I loaded KDE, and gnome.  I've found that the lighter windows managers work better.
    I'm considering removing gnome at least.  I don't think I'll be using it, so why take up the disk space and worry about upgrades?
    Is this like open heart surgery, or will pacman -R gnome-extra gnome manage things without to much damage?
    How 'bout KDE?
    These things seem to have their fingers into all parts of the system.
    Thx in advance.

    To remove a group (which kde and gnome are) do the following:
    pacman -Rg gnome
    pacman -Rg kde
    And answer Y when it asks to remove whole content.  If there are conflicts (ie. some app you use depends on one of the KDE or gnome packages) then pacman should tell you and refuse to remove the group.  Then you can selectively remove packages from the group that you don't want to keep.
    For example, on my system, if I try to remove KDE:
    $ sudo pacman -Rg kde
    :: group kde:
    arts gwenview kde-common kdebase kdelibs
    Remove whole content? [Y/n]
    error: this will break the following dependencies:
    kdelibs: is required by k3b
    $
    So, then, I'd say "well geez, I wanna keep k3b" and issue
    pacman -R arts gwenview kde-common kdebase
    Of course, this is a bad example, because eventually k3b requires kdelibs, and kdelibs requires arts, and arts requires kde-common... lol
    Long post short, yes, pacman is really good about taking care of dependancies, and won't let you proceed if you try to break dependancies, unless you specify the -f flag (force.)
    Additionally, if you use -Rs, it'll remove the package and all packages that it depends on but nothing else depends on.  If you use -Rc, it'll remove that package and all packages depending on it.  They're powerful, but be careful with 'em, 'cause they can remove tons of apps when using them on a group like KDE or Gnome.
    Eg:
    $ sudo pacman -Rgsc kde
    Password:
    :: group kde:
    arts gwenview kde-common kdebase kdelibs
    Remove whole content? [Y/n]
    Targets: k3b libmpcdec taglib ffmpeg libdts faac a52dec sox cdrtools cdrdao
    kdebase libxdamage damageproto libxcomposite compositeproto
    libraw1394 mtools gwenview kdelibs acl attr libidn fam portmap jasper
    openexr arts kde-common archlinux-menus
    Do you want to remove these packages? [Y/n]

  • Gnome and KDE 4.1 without mixing?

    I'm running Gnome and love it, but wanted to give KDE 4.1 a chance so I installed it too. When logging in (GDM) I choose whether I want to run Gnome or KDE 4.1,  but when I boot KDE the kde menus are full Gnome stuff, and when I boot Gnome, the menus are full of KDE stuff. It's a mix I don't like. Either I run Gnome or KDE.
    Is there a way to stop the Gnome menus scanning the KDE apps and the KDE menus to stop scanning the Gnome apps?
    Besides that, when I'm in Gnome and open a nautilus bookmark from the "Places" menu, Konquerer starts up happily and makes me think, "What a mess. Is this the way it's supposed to work?"
    If I want to run Gnome only and KDE only, do I need to make a dual boot with two separate Arch installations?

    The menu "problem" is due to both desktops using the standard menu item location (Freedesktop.org, I believe defines this).  If you want completely separate, you don't have to dual boot with two separate Arch installs, just create a new user and make a shared data location that your KDE and Gnome user can access.  For example:
    /home/thunderogg could be thunderogg, your Gnome user
    /home/kthunderogg could be kthunderogg, your KDE user
    Create a new /home/shared folder with permissions for both users and save your documents there.  That's the only way that I know of to have both installed and not have a menu mess.
