KDE 4/KDE 5 (Plasma 5) rewrite

Some work has started on a KDE 4/ Plasma 5 / Plasma rewrite. The reason I personally got involved was that I found the information (particularly about Plasma 5) slightly unclear and confusing as to what was "KDE 5" specific, KDE 4 specific and generally valid. You will find information on the KDE wiki discussion page and at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Chazza/KDE.
This is not intended as spamming a new Wiki rewrite for comments, but as KDE is such a  widely used environment, comments on writing it before commiting to it would be very welcome. Thus, comments are invited.

  • KDE and plasma 5

    Hello everyone, since Plasma 5.0 and Frameworks 5.0 are out, I wonder if Arch is going to smoothly upgrade the KDE package or if it's going to require a clean install or something more advanced. I don't want to rush into the new version installing kf5, kf5-aids and plasma-desktop (as suggest the wiki) without knowing everything is going to be fine, so I ask:
    Would it be better to wait, install the packages the wiki suggest or do a clean install? What do you think? Thank you.

    Plasma 5 packages in AUR are installed in /opt for now so they are coinstallable with KDE4. At some point it the future I guess it will move to /usr and will replace KDE4, but for now you can install and try it while keeping KDE4 installed at the same time.

  • [SOLVED] KDE's Plasma doesn't take GTK theme

    I use the latest stable KDE 4.3.4 on my desktop machine and am trying to achieve a uniform look between my QT and GTK apps. QTcurve is nice and renders 90% correct, but still not all the apps take it like I would want them to. For example: tabs in GIMP and Firefox don't have hover effects etc.
    Anyway, on gnome I always like Shiki-Brave GTK theme (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ … tent=86717) + window border and also QT apps look stunning with the theme imho. So I set this as my GTK theme and chose GTK+ as my QT theme. All QT apps take it as it should, but when right-clicking apps in the task manager or icons in the panels, I see that the menus don't take the GTK colors and widgets. Also when clicking the plasma icon in the right corner and choosing Desktop Settings give me a window with other GTK-like widgets but they don't fit in with my Shiki theme at all.
    For a test I also tried other GTK themes, even based on other GTK engines like Murrine, but they all give the same problem. Rebooting doesn't help either.
    Hopefully the problem is clear, if not I can provide screenshots (tonight, I'm at work now ). Please feel free to test it on your own machine, it doesn't break anything. Maybe it is solved in KDE 4.4 (beta) or with QT 4.6 but I'm not sure about that...

    who said plasma uses your qt theme? because it does not and never will. you have to create your own plasma theme to match your qt/gtk one.

  • [kde-unstable] Plasma 5.3 beta

    Plasma 5.3 beta packages are up for testing in [kde-unstable].
    New in this release: plasma-mediacenter, plasma-sdk. See the official announcement for other changes.
    Report packaging issues to bugs.archlinux.org, other issues to bugs.kde.org. Note that this requires enabling the [testing] repo.
    Happy testing!

    Instead of disabling all logs. Here is better solution is to disable just debug output:
    QT_LOGGING_RULES="*.debug=false"
    export QT_LOGGING_RULES
    Instead of putting in /etc/environment file, its put in /usr/bin/startkde
    From: https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/12190 … 8977line12
    Hopefully it will be in next KDE release.
    Also adding above made KDE a bit faster and more responsive on my system.

  • How to use different configurations for KDE Plasma?

    I typically use my laptop in two ways: single monitor and dual monitor. I like to have in the two cases two different sets of widgets and plasmoids, so I wonder if it's possible to have multiple configurations for Plasma and load the desired one when needed. I searched around for a solutio but didn't find anything.
    Right now, I'm using a rather awkward method: I have two sets of Plasma configuration files for single and dual monitor setup (ie., plasma-desktop-appletsrc-single and plasma-desktop-appletsrc-dual) and two startx scripts which, before starting KDE, copy the single or dual monitor configuration on the standard Plasma config file (cp $HOME/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc-dual $HOME/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc). I'm sure there are better ways to have a dynamical Plasma configuration, since my zero-order solution has many drawbacks, for example I loose the modifications I make on my desktop (since Plasma saves them on plasma-desktop-appletsrc which is overwritten at next startup).
    Can anyone please help me? Thanks.

    For such a purpose KDE Plasma provides Activities. Here you can find more about that:
    http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma#Activities
    There is also a nice plasmoid for easy Activity managing:

    I hope, this helps you...

  • [SOLVED]pacman -R kde leaves packages uninstalled

    I installed KDE with "pacman -S kde" it installed all sorts of stuff and i didn't like it.
    The only things i needed were kde-base plasma and dolphin. Now i've disintalled kde ( with "pacman -R kde ) and kept it minimal with the few things i need.
    Seems perfect but when i open a terminal and digit "k" and press tab, i can still see all kapplications that came with the whole kde package. Why? Shouldn't they be deleted? How can i remove them completley?

  • [Solved] Can't find a way to run network manager in kde

    Struggling a little to get wi-fi set up on an arch machine running kde
    I've installed plasma-applet-networkmanagement but I can't get it to run
    There isn't any launcher for the applet on the menu anywhere but I have been able to find a .deskop file for it at:  /usr/share/kde4/services/plasma-applet-networkmanagement.desktop
    When I try to run it though I get a little dialog box showing the following error
    The desktop entry of type
    Service
    is unknown
    I've viewed the .desktop file in kwrite and these are the entries which seem relevant to running it
    Type=Service
    X-KDE-ServiceTypes=Plasma/Applet
    Icon=networkmanager
    X-KDE-PluginInfo-EnabledByDefault=true
    X-Plasma-NotificationArea=true
    The last entry seems to be telling it to place the network manager applet in the tray if I'm understanding it correctly, but this doesn't happen
    Anyone able to tell me how to get the kde network manager working?
    Last edited by Ecky (2011-12-27 17:47:34)

    If you add a widget to the panel, or if you add a widget to the desktop -- in the ribbon that lets you select widgets, you should have one called "Network Management"
    If you do, drag it to where you want the control.
    If you don't, well... Let's see what happens first

  • KDE theming inconsistent since qt5 apps

    I have really strange KDE theming going on and have tried several things without any of them working.
    Firstly I'm using i3, with some KDE apps.
    I think the issue is kde5 apps in i3 refuse to get any widget/theming applied. I've tried breezy, oxygen etc.
    Basically apps like:
    - clipper
    - konsole
    - kate
    - systemsettings5
    http://ibin.co/1rvQsUchNttb
    http://ibin.co/1rvRBXQpoyfD
    Are missing their KDE themes/widget/fonts/colors etc. Specifically:
    - Missing icons next to the button
    - Font settings are ignored
    - Color settings
    - Save as dialog, looks just horrible and wrong
    Apps that are working:
    - kontact
    - krusader
    I'm pretty sure I tried installing the whole of plasma-meta and applying the theme.
    But I'm willing to try whatever again to fix this.
    Any ideas?

    Excellent thanks, one step in the right direction.
    Never had to do this in kde4..., must be a qt5 thing...
    I don't necessarily want to set this globally.
    It's currently set to i3-with-shmlog
    Hmm, I'll try think of a nice way to set it for certain qt5 apps.
    Is there a qt5 config file where I can set this env variable?
    I'm not aware if qt5 even has config file, however here is the root of evil:
    static inline QByteArray detectDesktopEnvironment()
    const QByteArray xdgCurrentDesktop = qgetenv("XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP");
    if (!xdgCurrentDesktop.isEmpty())
    return xdgCurrentDesktop.toUpper(); // KDE, GNOME, UNITY, LXDE, MATE, XFCE...
    // Classic fallbacks
    if (!qEnvironmentVariableIsEmpty("KDE_FULL_SESSION"))
    return QByteArrayLiteral("KDE");
    if (!qEnvironmentVariableIsEmpty("GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID"))
    return QByteArrayLiteral("GNOME");
    // Fallback to checking $DESKTOP_SESSION (unreliable)
    const QByteArray desktopSession = qgetenv("DESKTOP_SESSION");
    if (desktopSession == "gnome")
    return QByteArrayLiteral("GNOME");
    if (desktopSession == "xfce")
    return QByteArrayLiteral("XFCE");
    return QByteArrayLiteral("UNKNOWN");
    qtbase src/platformsupport/services/genericunix/qgenericunixservices.cpp
    When its UNKNOWN it simply fallbacks to Fusion.

  • KDE 5 auth/look problems

    I upgraded to KDE 5 (Plasma 2, KDE Frameworks 5.6, KDE Apps 14.12) and I must say it was a huge error. I completely reget doing it, and I should have learned from the mistake with KDE 4.x.
    Anyways, It's already done. Now I'm having quite some problems.
    The first one, which is the most important is that KDE auth (or polkit, or I don't know what name it has because apparently KDe guys like changing names every 2 months) isn't working.
    I open systemsettings and try to enable the auto-login feature, and then a password dialog shows up, asking for my password. I really don't know if it's asking for my user's password or root's password,
    but this really should make any difference as both passwords are the same (please, right now I don't want to hear anything about how bad that is and how unprotected I am. Focus on my problems).
    Anyways, after typing my password, the dialog just says that's not the password and doesn't apply the changes. Why is this happening?
    The second problem is that all KDE4 apps (Dolphin, for example) look really bad. The Wiki says to check my styles, but hell I did check and recheck them and I can't see how to fix that. How am I supposed to workaround this bug?

    No issues with autologin or authentication on a fresh Plasma 5.2 system here. KDE accepts my normal user password. You could have a look at /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.kde.kcontrol.kcmsddm.policy if there is something wrong with the defaults settings
    For the second issue, check my own post from here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1495601

    the screen shows no reaction o any keys or clicks except alt F2 and alt ctrl del
    in alt F2 commands can be typed but cannot be launched (as if they dont exist). task manager can be opened from there and it shows the normal kde apps (plasma etc) up and running
    alt ctrl del logout menu works normal
    UPDATE
    i installed and installed kde and kde-meta few times more. nowi have kde 4.2.4 that won't open konqueror and few other apps and it has visual artifacts of kde 4.3

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
    How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • [solved]network connection down after -Syu

    Couple of days ago, I used "pacman -Syu" to upgrade, since then when I start arch I can't connect to internet, not via wireless nor wired. Upgrade included few packages which I can't remember and I don't know a way to learn. Only one I recognized was Chromium, which I believe, shouldn't affect anything at all. Any help please?

    Stupid of me that I didn't try kde network plasma (I wasn't using before). Anyway, network connection was somehow not enabled, so I enabled and the problem is solved.

  • [SOLVED] KDE4 - Qt - Obsidian Coast

    I installed a fresh arch on my computer. I'm using KDE 4.
    Everything works perfectly except for the appearance of the qt4 applications (Kate, Konsole).

    They do not use my color just default Oxygen. After the change of color when Konsole is running, the system returns the errors:

    I installed kde, oxygen and kde-gtk-config. I tried moving .config and .kde directories, but it didn't worked.
    On another computer everything works fine. What can I do to make the colors have been applied?
    Thanks in advance.
    ~vf
    Solved by purging kde, installing plasma and oxygen-kde4 and changing color scheme in settings.

  • [SOLVED] gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders Segmentation fault

    When I update my packages via:
    $ yaourt -Syu
    I saw the error:
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    Then I found out the problem is about the binary file gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders.
    When I run
    gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders
    I get the error
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    Is this a bug or did I do something wrong?
    The file /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders is owned by package gdk-pixbuf2 (2.31.3-1), I tried compiling the package from source myself, that didn't solve the issue.
    I am using kde (new plasma).

    Have you recompiled cairo with --enable-gl? That's a bad thing to do.
    I was using cairo-ubuntu from AUR. Considering it might be the cause, I tried installing default cairo, it didn't solve the issue.
