KDE 4 suddenly doesn't like theming anymore :S [solved, mods plz read]

So I installed KDE a while ago, slowly. First all I needed was Kolourpaint, then after KDE 4 came out, the whole of KDE. And I've slowly been warming to the desktop as time has gone on, and will likely extract bits of it out, eg the desktop manager, and stuff them into my own highly customized desktop when I get my new box.
At first, everything worked just fine - happy user here (I use Openbox, but having KDE there was just... nice. I think KDE is very high quality, etc, blah blah KDE vs. GNOME etc etc ).
Then one day KDE randomly decided to, like, go all icky. Well, maybe not entirely randomly - while updating KDE (for whatever reason, I can't exactly remember why I upgraded, except that I noticed I was installing KDE 4.1.2 or something when I did start the upgrade), I did a quick df -h to make sure I'd have enough space and discovered that my home folder had about 250MB or something like that left in it. (I'm really low on diskspace in my home folder, but I have a spare 18GB partition on my box at /storage with 12GB free, I plan to move a fair chunk of data across sometime) so I decided to ^C the upgrade to move a few hundred MBs of stuff over onto /storage, enough for me to get KDE installed. Then I continued the upgrade, and it got me here. Note that I CTRL+C'd the upgrade while pacman was downloading, not installing, and that's why the following makes no sense.
Some other things I've done:
- Tried to 'startkde' in an Xnest window too many times to count, with it failing 88% of the time (I was aiming for the other 22% success rate to continue what I was doing )
- Tried to figure out how to make KDE 3 apps look nice / use my KDE 4 theme (I discovered qtconfig in this period)
It used to have the awesome KDE 4 theme, the first time it happened it started up with the icky, horrible CDE theme.
I was like "AGH MAJOR EW" and ran to systemsettings to try and change my theme back... only to discover that approximately 100.1% of the themes available had disappeared, leaving only 5 very icky ones in their place, CDE, Cleanlooks, Win9x, Motif and Plastique. That last one suggests that KDE 3 has somehow taken over my system.
I've reinstalled the kde group.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled KDE. Twice.
I'm thinking it's something in my home folder.
What do I do next?

have you tried
rm -r ~/.kde4?
I know I've had some upgrade trouble at some points with kde4 and removing all kde4 settings and starting over is a usually a good place to start.
FWIW, I have all the themes you mentioned for qt4 as well, so not necessarily any indicator of kde3 at work.

This started happening right around the time I updated to Firefox 4, but may have been a little before that too. For some things, like news and web comics it's just a little annoying. For important things like looking for new journal articles for my job, it literally makes my job more difficult. So fixing this would make my day.

I seem to have solved my own problem. When I disabled the add-on "Tab Renamizer" everything started working fine.

Microsoft Outlook Doesn't Like Me Anymore

"When I try to log on to Microsoft Outlook, my msn account, I get this message, "The connection to microsoft exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."

OS X doesn't like Photoshop anymore

Been running Photoshop CS on my machine for a while now 1 1/2 years with no problems. Recently it's become sluggish. No other applications have been affected. I've repaired permissions and a host of other things but no luck.
OS X is also not propagating file opening inofrmation to Photoshop when a file is "double-clicked" outside of Photoshop. ie. when a file is double-clicked in 'finder' or another application that would call up photoshop and then open the file in Photoshop. When I double click on a photoshop file (ie. a .PSD file, it will launch photoshop but won't open the file.
Any help before I go bug the photoshop forums?

That's usually caused by a missing Photoshop file. If you've recently done an Archive and Install of OS X, then that's the problem. There's an important file that never makes it to the new Library folder. Open the /Library/ScriptingAdditions/ folder within the "Previous System" folder and move the file "Adobe Unit Types" to the same location in the active Library folder. If you've already deleted the Previous System folder from your hard drive, then the only way to get that file back is to either reinstall Photoshop, or retrieve it from a backup of your hard drive.
If you haven't done an Archive and Install, then you need to reset the LaunchServices database. OnyX is one way to do that. Make sure to download the version for Panther. Once in OnyX, click on the Maintenance button. You'll see two choices for the LaunchServices database. Choose the Reset option and click the Execute button. Note that if you've changed any other types manually, you'll have to reset those. Such as PDF files, which will now open in Preview again rather than the Acrobat Reader if you had it set that way.

I want to re-use my old airport express base station but airport utility doesn't recognise it anymore (it dates from 2005) i would like to use it to connect to my speakers only

I have an old airport express base station from 2005
I would like to have a network on it so i can put it upstairs in a room and connect my speakers to it so i can send my music (from itunes) over the airport to my speakers.
I reset it and now i want to configure but the Airport utility doesn't recognise it anymore.
Can i update the firmware? has it become useless because too old or what can i do?
I work on macbook pro with macOSX 10.9.4

Please locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. Hard to see.....gray lettering on a white background....so you may likely need a magnifying glass and good lighting to see it.
The model number starts with a "A" followed by four numbers. If you see A1084 or A1088, unfortunately AirPort Utility 6.x in Mavericks OS X (10.9.4) does not support these older models. However, you can still administer these models if you have a Mac.....or can borrow one for a few minutes....using Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.

If your Import Settings are for Apple Lossless, AIFF, AAC or whatever the majority of your files are, convert MP3s to that file type.
I've presently got 17,000+ files in my library, and they're ALL MP3 or M4B(Audiobooks). If they weren't when I got them, I converted them. Saves a LOT of hassels with just this type of situation. Besides I have two non Apple MP3 players that WON'T work with other file types besides MP3 so, EVERYTHING I have has to be MP3.

IChat video suddenly doesn't work...

My fiancee and I have been using iChat for the last few years - the video and audio have always worked fine. She is in the USA and I'm in England until we get married in November. Last night, when I got home from work, it suddenly doesn't work. I'm on a MacBook running 10.4.11 and use AIM on iChat and she is on AIM on a Windows Vista laptop. She tries, I try it, it just doesn't start.

I have a different Error code in my Log.
You have Error 8
This is a bit of general coverall error code.
It means that it cannot make a Connection (it has excluded other items such as Internet Speed (Error 22) and issues over routing (error 7) and a "missing" camera)
One cause is when you set up Port Forwarding in your router for iChat and then the computer's IP Changes
This means the router is "pointing" the ports to one IP and the computer has another.
You have the three titles in ther Log (which I have now spaced out)
Normally there is more info in these sections.
The rest of the Log is not useful at this stage (I can't see that it mentions any iChat add-on)
Check the IP in use in System Preference > Network.
Compare this with any IP that is listed for Port Forwarding in the router.
Ideally the router should be using UPnP to open the ports (it lets your do Screen Sharing in iChat)
The router should not be doing Ping Blocking or have any DoS or SPI Security Filters

Compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work on Nvidia hardware

I tried searching whether similar issue was already discussed on the forums, but didn't find anything; sorry if I missed it.
I have two different systems with Nvidia hardware, one with a 9500M GS, and another one with a GTX 580. After updating to KDE 4.11 (as far as I remember, this issue started appearing at about that time; now it still happens with KDE 4.12) compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work. By "sometimes" I mean that once in a while I boot the computer and compositing isn't working, then I reboot and everything is fine. Sometimes hitting Alt+Shift+F12 twice helps, but sometimes it doesn't. I didn't gather statistics, but it seems to happen on the 9500M GS system more often than on the GTX580 one. On the former it happens once in about three boots, while on the latter it's something like once per ten boots, but I may be wrong.
I use proprietary driver, since I sometimes use the computer for gaming, and the opensource driver is still not quite up to the task. Btw, games work fine even when compositing doesn't work.
I haven't noticed any similar issue on my other machine with Intel graphics.
If anyone could help in identifying the cause, I would be much obliged, because I have no idea where to start searching.

Good guess but even if I miss the word or any text, in normal use it still brings up the menu (with options limited to 'zoom in' and 'zoom out'). When I'm not getting the menu for word correction I'm not getting any menu in the body of the document at all - it's strange!

Upgraded KDE, Now Doesn't Start

I have just done a pacman --sync kde and upgraded KDE to current. Now it won't start! When I kick off KDE via the startkde command, I get a small popup window that says
Could not start KDEINIT - check your installation
Has anyone run into this before and know a way around it? My KDE is fully current with what is in the Arch archives (yes, I did do a "pacman --sync --refresh" before updating KDE).
For now, I am stuck! Any and all suggestions welcome!

Been there, done that, no joy. Same result. I am guessing some unhandled dependency is biting me. I am going to start backtracking through KDEINIT itself and see if I can figure out where it is dying.
It is sad that we have to do stuff like this to get things to work. This sort of thing will continue to limit the reach of Linux until we get it sorted out. Possibly this is why one of my least favorite Linux distrox, Ubuntu, is becoming so popular that Dell is starting to sell it... it is fairly well contained and for the most part, just works.
Of course, as you may have seen from some of my other posts, Ubuntu behaves positively Microsoft-like in terms of its ability to "play nice" with other OS' on the same machine. I installed Ubuntu as an alternate boot on the same machine as my Arch, just to see what all the fuss was about. One of the Ubuntu updates I applied wandered on to my Arch partition and "updated" a few things there as well, totally trashing my X server and then my XFCE4 (discovered that when I finally - thanks to some kind folks here on these forums - got X working again). Hence, I really don't like Ubuntu anymore!
I've tried a lot of distros, but Arch continues to shine as the best of the bunch. Now, if I could just get KDE going again... :-)

Apple Menu: "Recent Items" doesn't work proper anymore

Hi,
i switched from 10.5.8 to 10.6.4 and recognized that the "recent items" in the Apple Menu doesn't work proper anymore.
While OS X is running everything works fine. When i restart the computer all recent items are cleared.
I want it to behave like it did in 10.5.8, that all recent items where displayed even after a restart.
I recognized that the "open recent" command in applications like TextEdit or Preview behave the same. While the Program is running everything works fine . If I close and restart the app, open recent is cleared.
I tried do adjust it under Appearance in the System Preferences, but if i set all Numbers of recent items to "none" for example and restart the computer it will be set for each (Application, Document, Server) back to 10 again.
Hope someone can tell me a solution because i use "open/ recent Items" alot and it really disturbes my workflow.

thanks..i checked the preferences for the com.apple.recentitems.plist and didn't find one.
It seems like the system doesn't write down which items i loaded. I trashed this .plist earlier because i
saw that hint somewhere else.
i did like you said and created a new user account, tested different apps and documents, restarded and everything was displayed proper in the "recent items" Appel menu and in the "open recent" of every App.
I searched in the test account for the com.apple.recentitems.plist, copied it to the preferences of my account and restarted the computer. In the "recent items" displayed the Items that i used with the test account but after several tests it is clear that the system doesn't write down the recent items when i open my account. The com.apple.recentitems.plist still showes only the items i used with the Test account and the info of the file says that it wasn't touched sinced i copied it from the test to my account.
The Terminal command didn't change anything. The question is why doesn't the system write down wich items and documents i used when i'm in my account?

The Airplay icon will not display if the OS is unable to locate any Airplay devices.
I would check that both devices are connected to the same network and maybe even power cycle the network devices - eg router etc
Maybe even try to connect both devices to another network like an iPhone personal Hotspot and see if that helps to isolate the problem

I've found some other people discussing this recently in the internet (although not as many as I thought) so it seems to be a generalized problem.
I wouldn't want to swtich back to local calendar and sync everything back but this is an annoying problem becase there's no way you can know if the invite went out or not.
Did someone find an official acknowledge of this or something like that? I'm not sure if it's something in our configuration that's causing the problem. My Apple ID email is my personal email address and my calendar used to send invites through my work account (which is the only account configured in my mac currently). I'm not sure what mechanism does iCloud use to send the invites (it didn't work in any device or even in iCloud.com itself).

Quick drop list doesn't come up anymore :( LV2009f2

My quick-drop list doesn't come up anymore when I press ctrl-space. When I initially press ctrl-space (after loading LabVIEW) my machine behaves like it is loading the drop list (LabVIEW lags, and my hard drive thrashes for about a minute), but no drop list appears. My computer is kinda slow and outdated (hense the long inital load times of the drop list) so that may be the issue. I'm running a 1.6GHz Centrino w/ 1.5GB of ram and Windows XP SP3.
I've tried rebooting. I was using the drop list quite a bit before it stopped working. I would like to avoid a full reinstall of LabVIEW over this.
Any advice?

Just grasping at straws but...
In the LV .INI file there is a line
"QuickDropPosition="
That apperas to save where the QD window waas when last used. Maybe yours is set for an off-screen position.

Like the subject says, wine doesn't start utorrent anymore after latest update. The output I get is the following:

Enabling DRI and disabling DRI doesn't help. Updating to the latest wine 0.9.30-1 also didn't change anything.

Problem is solved. Had to delete the .wine folder. Lost all utorrent settings, but it works again now.

Ipone 4s display suddenly doesn't work any more. i can't even unlock it as it put the numbers itself. and if i am lucky to unlock it opens apps and does everything whenever my finger comes near without even touching it. can anyone help?
