KDE: After new font install Times New Roman lags/crashes OpenOffice

Hallo all,
This problem has been troubling me since I first switched to Linux with Open Suse a couple years back. I got around it on Kubuntu without installing new fonts...
But the other day I decided to give it a go, thinking it might be a bug in KDE3 that was fixed in 4. So I installed a ton of fonts for Photoshopping and now, just like the first time, Times New Roman looks ugly in OpenOffice and if I'm trying to open a document that's .doc or .rtf and written in Times it lags Writer and typically crashes instead of opening. This is a problem since friends send me stuff all the time and they are Windows users.
Strangely if I print with Times it looks like it's supposed to but otherwise it's ugly. It looks this way in KOffice, too. I'm not so much concerned with that as I am with the lagging and crashing Writer, though.
If this is a bug then it must be pretty old. Has anyone else encountered this before?
The Defaults button is also grayed out in the KDE Font Installer. Anyone know why? If I can just revert to default with fonts then I will.
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!
I have installed the MS fonts. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. This problem only started when I installed a bunch of new fonts that I've collected over the years for Photoshopping.
Using the replacement thing doesn't work, either; whenever I open a Times New Roman doc the font is still the same. It only freezes or crashes for really long documents but that's still a problem for me. Also it looks really ugly.
I'd honestly be fine if I could just restore the defaults but the Defaults button is grayed out in the font installer
I only assume that that would fix it, though. I think the problem is that one of the fonts I installed messed up Times New Roman. The problem is that I've got hundreds of em and I don't know which ones are mine and which ones came with KDE/MS fonts.

I am not able to restore my iphone 4 after trying to install the new softwear. I tried every single possible way. What can I do?

There are two ways that a backup can become encrypted:
You chose to encrypt it, then forgot the password.
If you have company-provided MS Exchange access your IT department has the option of requiring your backup to be encrypted. The first time you backed up or synced after installing MS Exchange you were prompted for a password. That is the password you need.
If you don't have the password any longer there is no way to restore the backup.

  • I did an icloud backup on my old 4S with iOS 8.3 and wanted to install on my new iPhone 6 but it only has iOS 8.1.3! Can I do/use the backup after I chose "install as new iPhone"?

I did an icloud backup on my old 4S with iOS 8.3 and wanted to install on my new iPhone 6 but it only has iOS 8.1.3! Can I do/use the backup after I chose "install as new iPhone"?
Because I cannot update the software until I chose if I want to begin with a new phone setting or download a backup.
But the backup is of course not compatible with the old iOS.
So will it be possible to get the new iPhone going, then do the software update to 8.3 and then download / use the data from
    my 4S icloud backup?

    1. Settings > General > Software Update > Update the  to 8.3
    2. Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
    3. Reactivate phone and follow prompts to restore iCloud (or iTunes) backup.

  • Firefox installed in Archlinux can display fonts after a new fonts installed

Hi! I'm a Linux user. Recently I migrate to Archlinux. At first time I used Firefox without issues. Then in the process the install and config software and the distro I installed new fonts. That fonts I used in IBM Linux distro, OpenClient based on RHEL 6.5. Thats fonts are a backup of that machine. The set of fonts include around of 4000 fonts: Windows 7 Fonts, Google Fonts, Droid and others. In RHEL I have not issues with this fonts. The fonts groups are:
    <pre><nowiki>[elrengo@xpsl421x .fonts]$ ls -l
    total 272

    * Uninstall Firefox / Re install Firefox --> Do not works.
    * Reinstall fontconfig package in Archlinux. --> Do not works.
    * Update font cache --> Do not works.

  • Difference between "Times" font and "Times New Roman"

I see these fonts right next to each other, and I am wondering if there are any differences.

I see these fonts right next to each other, and I am wondering if there are any differences.
Ah, the history of type wars in the twentieth century.
In the nineteen-twenties when Stanley Morison became typographic consultant to Monotype Corporation, newspapers were still printed with nineteenth century types where the verticals are thick and the horisontals are very, very thin in emulation of copper plate printing.
Morison famously fought The Times over the legibility of its printing type, and was invited to design and develop a different form of printing type that would stand up to production with flatbed assembly, stereotyping (10% condensing after cooling) onto curved half-cylinders, and high speed presswork with thin inks and thin unmoistened and uncoated paper.
Morison looked to the printing types of the seventeenth and eighteenth century. With these types one can make an optical trick, because the bown (the counter) is asymmetric and the stress is diagonal and not vertical. This makes the type look broad, even if in fact it is condensed, a trick Matthew Carter later used at Linotype to develop Olympian as replacement for Corona.
Morison had Victor Lardent at the drawing department of The Times prepare the large scale masters, differently dimensioned for different printing sizes. From these masters, electro-mechanical pantographic routers in turn made the metal manufacturing masters for machine casting and machine composition with Monotype systems.
The Times was composed in two machine composition systems at the same time, Monotype for titling and Linotype for body copy. Therefore, the new printing type was also manufactured for Linotype composition, that is, for solid line slug casting in addition to single letter sort casting for Monotype composition.
During World War II, the Monotype works at Salfords in Surrey manufactured machine gun parts in addition to composing machine parts. Meanwhile, in the United States, the Mergenthaler Linotype company applied for a patent on the Times printing type and was granted the United States patent in the North American market.
Linotype and Monotype first converted to photo-mechanical composition in the nineteen-sixties and then to electro-photographic composition in the first half of the nineteen-seventies and to electronic composition for laser imagesetting with early page description languages and raster image processors in the second half of the nineteen-seventies.
In this process, the paper masters for metal casting machines were modified in the process of making masters for the new media. Linotype Times was modified for electro-photographic reproduction by Walter Tracy of the Linotype office in London. Walter Tracy's work became the source of the Linotype Times licenced for the Apple LaserWriter in late 1984.
Linotype had licenced Dr Peter Karow's type production tool, Ikarus, which was the first to implement type as outlines to be populated with picture elements by the raster image processor instead type as patterns of picture elements painted by the type production team in advance of rasterisation. Dr Karow's outline technology was then converted to Dr Warnock's outline technology for PostScript.
The first conversion to PostScript suffered from shortcomings, and was subsequently redone. Linotype in the first half of the nineteen-eighties was selling Linotronic imagesetters into the rapidly rising market for PostScript offset printing, with the Linotype Adobe Type 1 Library as the preferred type library for the new production platform.
Monotype entered into a licence agreement with Adobe in late 1988, and in 1989 the bottom went out of the type market when Apple and Microsoft announced the TrueType Alliance with the promise of publishing a free TrueType Specification, Adobe announced that that the Adobe Type 1 specification would be published, Sun Microsystems acquired Folio and announced that the Sun F3 font format would be available, and Agfa acquired Compugraphic after which Agfa-Compugraphic contracted with Hewlett-Packard to provide the Agfa-Compugraphic Intellifont technology for the Hewlett-Packard Printer Control Language page description language.
Apple developed TrueType 1 with Linotype Times and Linotype Helvetica as models for gridfitting the same as Linotype Times and Linotype Helvetica had been developed as models for Adobe Type 1 gridfitting. Microsoft did not have the rights to Linotype Times and Linotype Helvetic, so Microsoft approached Monotype for comparable core fonts. Monotype then developed Times (New) Roman for TrueType, and a close match for Linotype Helvetica, Monotype Arial (named after the spirit in Shakespeare's The Tempest?).
Linotype Times, Monotype Times New Roman, Linotype Helvetica, and Monotype Arial are the four type faces that have attracted most engineering attention in the development of technologies to automatically fit an outline to a raster grid.

  • "Email link" option changes font to "Times New Roman" at end of the URL in Outlook

When using the "Email link" option in Firefox, it then calls Outlook, then inserts the title of the webpage, as well as the URL. This is a handy feature that I have been using for years, but has always had an annoying bug.
The URL in the body of the message conforms with Outlook's settings (font is Calibri 11 for me), but then Firefox also adds a space at the end of the URL, which is formatted in Times New Roman 12. I have gone through every template and setting Outlook and checked for TNR. It is nowhere to be found. This is something that Firefox is doing, and has been doing for many, many years (at least as far back as version 3.6, all the way to 17, which I'm running now.

Seems obvious now, just added the css class to the body div.

  • New skype install on Win 8.1 Crashes ALL the time

    Hi,
OK - so I see that there are a few folk complaining of similar issues, so here is my specific problem :
    1. New installation of Windows 8.1 (64) - Dell Laptop with 8G RAM and INTEL graphics
    2. Before this - the m/c was running an older version of skype perfectly under Win7 Pro
    3. Checked ALL drivers up-to-date.
    4. All recommended/important Updates applied.
    5. Installed Skype 6.22.64.104 had to reboot and re-log into skype before my contacts came up.
    6. First test - call Echo - right pane goes grey, cursor spins, echo replies and I can record my voice. BUT no way to halt the call as right pane is still blank an GREY.
    7. After a while - Skype bombs with an exception.
    8. Exception and dxdiag both attached in zip.
NB My skype app on an iPad is still running - even on IOS 8.1.1.
    Thanks - ever hopefully......

OK - so I was wrong about the 64 bit I guess .
Just re-installed 6.22.64.106 after uninstalling the 6.14 test version.
Thanks for reminding me that my laptop also gas a GeForce graphics chip - bug****d if I know why I need this as I have NEVER played a game on this PC - and have no intention of doing so .
Anyway, your comment made me think - WHY is Skype trying to UNLOAD a driver .
So - I checked the device manager settings for the GeForce card and surprise - Windows tells me its up yo dat .
So I downloaded the GeForce Graphics tool 'GeForce Experience' and IT tells me that my GeForce driver is actuall out of date (by a YEAR) - thanks Microsoft .
So - I installed the newer version, uninstalled Skype, re-installed 6.22 and BINGO - it now BL***Y works !!!!.
So WHY is Skype even considering using some 'gaming graphics driver' ???. By the simple fact of switching it in or out - crashes Skype .
Anyhow - findgers crossed - its working WITH the latest Skype .
Hope that this might help some other poor S*D )

  • How can I get Font Book to install new fonts with Lion OS X without crashing?

Font Book is unresponsive using Lion 10.7.1. When I click on Font Book icon in the dock, I get "Application not Responding". Can't install any new fonts. Anyone else having this issue?
I can get to the open Font Book window if I click on Mission Control to get there, but once there I see spinning wheel, which does not stop.
Any suggestions on how to get Font Book to work well on Lion?

Quick update... I removed all non System fonts from ~/Library/Fonts and deleted com.apple.fontbook.plist from ~/Library/Preferences.
Now FontBook doesn't crash when launched.
I think I'm going to use a 3rd party application to manage all non Apple/System fonts. Hopefully that will avoid any future problems.

  • Adobe indesign cs4 (New font instalation)

How can I install new font from adobe Indesgn cs4?
Please help me to the procedure of install the new font!
I have use the following steps---
    Windows>Control Panel>fonts>Install new fonts
    But Its does not work.

    >I have use the following steps---
    >Windows>Control Panel>fonts>Install new fonts
That's not the way to do it, you need a couple more steps.
Insert the CS4 'Extras' DVD (something like that; it's clearly labeled). From within the "Install new fonts" dialog, browse to the DVD and in there to the folder containing the fonts you want to install. If you are there, wait a bit while the list is being read. If the list fills up, select the ones you want to install (or simply choose "Select All") and press OK.
    (Note that this has
    i nothing
to do with InDesign. It's your basic Windows base. Buy any guide and you'll find it there.)

  • New fonts installed with Motion 5 and FCPX??

Anyone know if there are some new fonts imbedded into FCPX and Motion 5? Seems like I have at least 1 new font (Gaz) that does not appear in any other applications or in the Font Book app. (Gaz is what Mark Spencer uses in one of his new tutorials for Motion 5.)

  • Can I swap out old RAM with new before install of new HD?

I am replacing a friend's HD for her MacBook Pro 5,2 and also swapping out the old memory (2-2GBs) for new memory (2-4 GBs). My question is: does it matter whether I install the new memory before I install the HD or after? If after, does it matter whether or not the HD has been formatted? Has an OS installed on it? Any help here would be very much appreciated!

Your snow leopard dvd will format the HD properly to install the OS. Just replace the HD put in the snow leopard disc and let it do its thing
