KDE and fglrx module - power saving

Hello,
yesterday I switched from gnome to KDE 4.6 (stable) and have a problem regarding my graphics card driver:
I use the proprietary driver fglrx (11.3), which worked fine for me under gnome, but now with KDE the graphics card doesn't go into power-saving mode. So the fan is really loud all the time and with "aticonfig --odgc" I see that the core clock is at maximum. Under gnome the core frequency was not so high and the card managed to go into powersaving mode.
Has anybody the same problem and can help me?
Thanks,
Matse

Hi,
this did not solve my problem. What helps is to change the "Composit Type" from "opengl" to "XRender" in system-settings "desktop effects" (or similar, translated on the fly from german). But this is no solution for me because with XRender kde is really slow even with all effects disabled and by the way do I really like the desktop effects
And "aticonfig --odgc" shows a GPU-load of "0%" but does not lower core clock or core voltage, that's really strange.
Any suggestions besides buying a nvidia card?
bye
matse

I want to know DETAILS what happens when I push ON/OFF button and select "Activate power saving".
What are the negative effects of this?
Noise cancellation still works or NOT?
    Does GPS work?
    What else???
"The Nokia E72 features active noise cancellation and navigation as well as a digital compass."
The latest USER GUIDE says NOTHING ABOUT THIS! I used Ctrl-F to find "power saving". Basically nothing is said what happens in power saving mode!!!!
    Languages: English, Finnish

it disables all UI effects (Theme transitions, etc.),
lowers display brightness to minimum. Brightness option in display settings is disabled.
switches the processor to a more power efficient mode (performance is noticeably lower)
instantly turns off connections when they aren't needed (e.g. WLAN connection gets disabled instantly after you open a web page, if you want to open another one then the device connects and then quickly disconnects again). As a result, push mail gets disabled. You will have to manually sync mails as long as power save mode is enabled.
Noise cancellation still works. GPS still works - in the same way as with the WLAN connection described above

  • N85: 'Unable to Deactivate Power Saving Mode'

    Hi,
My N85 currently shows power saving mode (the battery icon has a moon symbol overlaid), and when I plug in any charger, i get the message 'Charging' followed by a message 'Unable to Deactivate Power Saving Mode'.
The same message appears if I press the power button and select 'Deactivate power saving'. The message remains even though the battery is 100% charged.
The phone appears to be working normally with full 3G connection, Wireless, Bluetooth etc all able to be controlled manually or via the profile.
    So...
Did I do something to force the phone to stay in power saving mode? How do I remove this message? What effect does Power Saving mode have?
    Thanks for any clues!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

deep power saving mode is basically the mode when you battery runs low in order to preserve power, the phone shuts down all possible applications, reduces power to the screen in power saving mode you can still use the basic functions, but it should only go into the power saving mode when the battery is actually near empty its an awesome feature, but must be a bug in this case since you state that the battery is full, glad you found a solution

  • Overclock with power saving states

    Hi
    3770K + MSI Z77A-GD55
I had previously a Gigabyte board and I could overclock my cpu and still enter power saving states automatically lowering multiplier and voltage. But with this MSI board it seems I can only get full OC frequency (4.5Ghz) or I could go with no OC and use turboboost to 3.9Ghz. Is it possible to have 4.5Ghz overclock and also automatic power saving states that lower the multiplier and voltage? Eg 16x-45x multi
I think I have all the power saving options enabled in bios.
    Thank you in advance

I got it running correctly now. Liveupdate installed some outdated bios. Installed manually the newest and now I have turbo multiplier settings for each core in clickbios.
I'll be honest, personally, I would stay away from Live Update.
Nothing against MSI's utility, but I can't tell you how many times we've dealt with issues related to MSI Live Update causing the problem.
    Better to do it yourself.

  • Power saving mode / and broadband disconnecting pe...

I have recently started using the power saving mode and noticed that our BB speed has gone down to 2.4 from 2.9.  While I know this is not a big reduction we had a lot of problems earlier in the year with V04 messages cos our speed dropped to around 2 and it took a lot of engineers visits to get it back up to 2.9.  Also I noticed that our HH keeps disconnecting (at the moment it says it's been connected for 2 days) although this has been happening since we signed up to BT and not since using the power save mode..
Do you think it is the power saving mode or the fact that the HH keeps disconnecting periodically that is resulting in our speed reducing?  I would really appreciate your help as I desperately want to avoid getting the dreaded V04 error messages!
    Thanks
    Debbie

Hi the variations in your speed are being caused by the restarts of your hub nothing toowith power saving mode you need to find the causes of thedisconections

  • Using both power saving mode and offline mode caus...

So I am having a very strange problem. I have been using the Situations App (formerly Nokia Situations) to automatically put my phone into offline mode, and power saving mode over night. 9pm to 6:30am.
Recently the phone as started refusing to leave the offline mode in the morning. Even if I try to change the profile manually it says "Unable to change profile". The only way I can get out of offline mode is to reboot.
I uninstalled Situations, and manually put the phone into offline mode and power saving mode. By the morning I had the same issue, stuck in offline mode until reboot. So it's not the App causing the problem. I've tried a soft reset, same problem still.
I also noticed that over-night (from fully charged before 9pm) to 6:30am I used about 70% of my charge. (A combination of power saving mode and offline mode is killing my battery!)
I would have to go to work and immediately put my phone on charge! I.e.. 12 hours of offline + power save has drained my battery almost completely.
Last night I decided to use the Situations App to put the phone into offline mode, BUT NOT activate power save mode.
This morning the phone had virtually full charge and it had no problem returning to online mode. So it's ONLY if I use BOTH power-save and offline. (Tonight I will try using power-saving mode and NOT offline mode to see if it's only the power-saving mode causing the issue!)
If I manually enter offline+power-save mode, and then try to return to on-line/non-power-save mode, relatively quickly, i.e.. Not over-night, everything is fine. It's only over night the problems start!
    Any help?
    Rob
PS. I also have the problem where using HSPA+ causes my phone to drop from the network and stop being able to receive/make phone calls. But disabling HSPA+ works around this for now, I think this problem is unrelated however.

I have a similar problem. My 808 PureView loses 70% of its charge overnight if I leave it in normal profile without power-saving. To deal with this issue, I started using the situations app to put the phone in power saving mode overnight. That solved the problem (although I never put my phone to offline mode). This is a weird problem because throughout the day my phone doesn't use 70% of charge, but it does overnight while doing nothing!
I have also experienced the second problem, losing cellular and internet connection, on my 808. I have started a thread to deal with this issue.

I believe it is a firmware bug that causes this problem.

  • I Can't Switch between 'power-saving GPU' and 'High-Performance GPU' in Catalyst Control Center

    Hi,
Whatever if my computer was only on the battery or was only plugged in to the main power supply. In Catalyst Control Center, I noticed that 'High-Performance GPU' was always selected', although the 'automatically select power-saving GPU when on battery' was enabled. Also, When I tried to switch into the 'power-saving GPU', there was no response at all. However, when my laptop was only on the battery, I noticed the the try of switching into 'Power-Saving GPU' results in shutting down my computer suddenly.
Thus, I had to open the Device Manager, then I disabled 'Radeon HD'. After that,  'power-Saving GPU' was selected(Screen shot below), regardless of whether my laptop was on only the battery or was only plugged in to the main power supply. To switch it into 'High-performance GPU' again, I only must enable 'Radeon HD' in the Device Manager since clicking on 'High-performance GPU' in the Catalyst Control Center didn't respond.
As conclusion, 'High-performance GPU is always selected, regardless of whether my computer was only the Battery, or was only plugged in to the main power supply. To let 'power-saving GPU' is selected, then 'Radeon HD' must be disabled in the Device Manager.

  • Printer power saving features activates and deactivates at random

I have a C8022A all in one 8500 printer which has a built in Power saving feature that is supposed to put the print6er in sleep mode after sevaral minutes of non use and turn on printer when a new print job is sent to it.Duringg the first 4-5 months of use it did that - now it seems sometime to go into sleep mode 4 hours after it stopped being used and coming on at random 2-4 hours later for no apparent reason - talked to 2 techs in India with HP chat support but it was useless, and could not get through to live 800 support - tried 5-6 times.!

    Richard,
Open Energy Saver preferences. While there, unplug the power connector from the MBP? Does the display dim a little bit? If not, toggle the Optimization to one of the other settings then back to Normal like you want. Did the display dim? Now plug the power back in. Did it work as expected?
As for the keyboard, if you want it to remain off in low light conditions, uncheck the Illuminuate keyboard in low light conditions option. You could look at the keyboard brightness keys as setting a max brightness. The keyboard brightness will still fluctuate based on the light level in the room but will only get as bright as the setting you put in.
Did I make that clear as mud?

  • M93p BIOS issue: PowerOff not correct if Enhanced Power Saving Mode Disabled and Wake on Lan Enabled

Hi Levnovo support team, Recently I bought a M93p tiny(10AAA05MTW)(BIOS revision FBKT56A)and installed with Ubuntu 13.10 myself. Then tried to enable wake on lan for my tiny. The followings are my test result. 1. Enhanced Power Saving Mode Enabled, no mateter what is Wake On Lan setting     PowerOff system is OK. 2. Enhanced Power Saving Mode Disable and Wake On Lan Disabled    PowerOff system is OK. 3. Enhanced Power Saving Mode Disabled and Wake On Lan Primary or Automatic   PowerOff system is NG.   When I tried to power off system, it always can poweroff(LEDs on front all off) then POWER ON again in 2 or 3 seconds.   I cannot accept this test result ,system should poweroff not reboot again.   It's really hard to understand why enabling Wake on Lan will affect power off function. I tried the same procedures with my another M92p(3212A16)(BIOS revision 9SKT70AUS), and it works well.

Did you ever get a fix for this?Having the same issue on 3 of 6 machines that just arrived.

  • Laptop-mode-tools no power saving

    Hi,
I use laptop-mode-tools for several months and it worked fine, however lately when my laptop runs on battery it seems that no power saving options kick in, since I get a battery time around 1 and half an hour, while it used to be 4 hours.
It may be connected to that I removed initscripts from the system, however laptop-mode.service is enabled and started, journal says events are picked up, laptop-mode-tool modules are loaded, I can see e.g. that cpu freq is cut back, so I'm confused a bit. I spent hours going through the config files and browsing the journal, but I must have missed something.
Please advise where to look or what to check. Thank you.
If you need any log or config file, additional information, please let me know.

It is just a bunch of scripts written by a forum member.  I just came across it recently as I only used arch on desktop until now.  Fuduntu was boasting their battery life preset on their distro but I find that with these scripts and changing them to your needs, you get far better results.  I have a 9 cell on my asus eee 1005ha getting 11-12 hours of internet browsing and writing.

  • WISM Controller and 6500 Switch power cycled

Has anyone come across this issue where if the 6500 switch is reloaded or power cycled that 8 out of 10 interfaces on the WISM become administratively down this does not happen if you reload just the wism or power cycle the controller.
the softwear loaded on the switch is as follows.
    Supervisor Engine 720 10GE with f/w 8.5(2) and s/w 12.2(33)SXH
WiSM WLAN Service Module with f/w 12.2(14r)S5 and s/w 12.2(33)SXH
any suggestions as to how to sort this so it loads all the interfaces as up from the power cycle or reload of the switch would be welcome have already made sure the config is saved but still happens.
    Jeremy

    1. I believe a 6509 can handle 5 WiSMs, though I've found 4 more realistic when considering the need for uplinks and service modules.
    2. Based on 5 WiSMs, you can have 1500 per chassis. Again, I tend to stick with 4, or 1200 APs per chassis.
    3. There is no hard limit that I am aware of. WCS on a VERY high-end server can handle ~2500 APs when running Linux WCS. As with the above, this works well with 1 WCS per 2 chassis if each has 4 WiSMs.

    Hi,
from what I read on the ubuntu bug-tracker: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/283836 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/284408 this looks like a bug in the fglrx-driver itself. Because that's a closed-source proprietary driver there's not much one can do but waiting for ATI to fix it.
To solve your problem at the moment you could try to downgrade to a catalyst-driver you know who works with your card or switch to one of the free ati and radeon drivers supporting your card.
