KDE Applications look better in Cinammon. Solved

I am trying to get a decent desktop going. have installed KDE, KDE-Base etc.
But the KDE apps have very poor color scheme/fonts/ Thin light grey letters on a light grey tool bar.
I have tried to use KDE to change the themes but no luck.
I have installed Cinnamon, and when I run Konqueror etc under Cinnamon they look MUCH better. Menus and letters are readable.
Is there a way to fix KDE so the apps look right?

K Thanks for the pointers.
'looks right' means that under cinnamon the desktop does not look like kde (duh!) and the menu structures are all different, and the bar at the bottom is using non KDE icons etc.
Under KDE the fonts were grey on grey and very hard to read. (number one complaint).
However now fixed mostly. Changed the theme from CDE to Oxygen.  and just to be safe the appplication appearance ditto.
KDE now seems useable.
Next step is to get X, KDE, and network to start automatically at boot.
Thanks again for the help.

Yes, I have. By the way when i use Oxygen theme in KDE, Eclipse looks better. But not when using QtCurve. Maybe there is some way to use Eclipse with QtCurve theme?

  • Rendering of fonts in kde 4 and gnome 2.24 [SOLVED]

    Dear all,
I have been trying to set up fonts in my system so that gnome and kde applications look the same. I failed. I read the relevant post in these very forums, but the person that proposes the solution does not use autohinter and I do, so I cannot apply his solution. Anyway, the problem is that the spacing of letters using the same font is different in kde and gtk. For example, for the word "file" in the menubar, the F and the I and the L are closer together in GTK than in Qt. I wish I could post a screenshot.
I am using the ubuntu patches. Here is my /etc/fonts/conf.d
    10-antialias.conf
    10-autohint.conf
    10-hinting-full.conf
    10-hinting.conf

    65-nonlatin.conf
    69-unifont.conf
    80-delicious.conf
    90-synthetic.conf
My .fonts.conf is empty. I have a .Xresources file:
    Xft.hintstyle: hintfull
    Xft.antialias: 1
    Xft.hinting: 1
    Xft.autohinting: 1
    Xft.dpi: 100
    Xft.rgba: rgb
    Xft.lcdfilter: lcddefault
that I merge with the command xrdb when X starts.
Does anyone have an idea what could be different in the Gnome and KDE setups?
    Thanks for your help

Dear All, after a long search I finally found a very accettable configuration.
First of all patched cairo using the cairo-resepect-fontconfig patch from brebs
then I applied the following patches to Qt 4.4.3:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/217729
finally I chose the following configuration:
    Autohint: yes
    Hinting: yes
    Hintstyle: hintmedium
Lcdfilter: lcddefault (I have the Ubuntu packages installed)
    Rgba: rgb
    Antialiasing: yes
Now my fonts in Qt and GTK look much more similar (not perfectly identical, but good enough!)
    Thanks to anyone who helped

  • [Solved]Remove button icons in KDE applications when running under dwm

I run dwm but also use KDE applications.
KDE applications do show icons on dialog buttons:
I gather that these buttons can be disabled in the system settings dialog when running a full KDE desktop. My question is: How do I achieve this - remove the icons on buttons - while not running a full KDE session?
kcmshell4 doesn't seem to expose an option to do so in any available module, including 'kcmshell4 icons'.
The systemsettings5 option repertoire is incomplete and only has the modules "Workspace>Desktop behaviour", "Workspace>Shortcuts", "Network>Settings" and "Network>Connectivity".
In my .xsession, I am currently exporting
    export QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=gtk # Make Qt5 use the GTK+ theme
    export DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome # For something I can't quite remember
I've also seen XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=gnome vs XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=kde floating around, but neither achieves anything in this regard.
Does anybody know which setting in which config file I could set to emulate what the KDE configuration GUI does in a KDE session, or what KDE packages I would have to install in order to add the correct settings component to my KDE configuration utilities (KDE4 and/or Plasma 5), or what environment variable to set? A last resort would be installing a full KDE workspace or Plasma 5 and toggling the setting there, but I'd rather avoid doing that.

Would running "kcmshell5 style", or "kcmshell4 style" be an option? Am not sure what you have installed, but under fine tuning tab there, there's exactly what you need.
Edit: if that doesn't work, .config/kdeglobals
    ShowIconsInMenuItems=true
    ShowIconsOnPushButtons=true
    ToolButtonStyle=TextBesideIcon
    ToolButtonStyleOtherToolbars=TextBesideIcon
Change to false and TextOnly, respectively
Might have to look for another kdeglobals file for kde4 apps, which should be either in .kde4 or in home dir, since there's a bit of a mess currently during transition
Please excuse my belated reply; thank you for the solution:
    The line
    ShowIconsOnPushButtons=false
in kdeglobals removed the icons for KDE 4 applications. For some reason, applications using KDE Frameworks 5.x did never show the button icons to begin with.

  • [SOLVED] Eastern arabic numerals in Qt/KDE applications

    Hi,
i have issue with Qt based applications -> they use eastern arabic numerals
I tried using another DE (xfce, lxde, gnome) and also X only ("sudo startx" from tty), the problem persisted. In GTK applications is everything correct. For example, Transmission has both GTK and Qt frontends, so i tried it - the Qt one has the problem present.
    http://tinypic.com/r/2z8vsxi/6
(sorry about the locale in the GTK one (right), i don't know how to switch locale of it from KDE)
Almost all KDE apps suffer from this (KTorrent, Amarok, KDE Telepathy, KMail...)
From non-KDE applications is there also Skype, which has also this problem (and presence of issue in Skype led me to conclusion that problem is with config of Qt itself, not KDE)
I believe that i have just something misconfigured, but i don't know where i should search for such configuration, i already tried google.
What is weird for me, this also happened in Chakra, which installation is like next->next->next->finish, however in Kubuntu numerals were correct.
Computer is HP Probook 4530s A1D23EA, bios F.29.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    EDIT / Solution:
It's bug in Qt 4.8.4 only in Slovak locale. Since it has been fixed already (according to https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-28843) in Qt 4.8.5 but this version is not yet in repo, i made a workaround for that.
    1. uncomment some other locale in /etc/locale.gen ( i used en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8)
    2. re-generate locales with locale-gen
    3. edit /etc/locale.conf and add line LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8" (or whatever you decided to use)
    4. reboot

  • How to install KDE Applications 5?

    Hi,
Are there any programs dedicated to kde 5? With KDE ArchWiki shows "Applications based on KF5 will have a first release in December 2014." So, I mean mostly about apps like Dolphin, Kate, compatibility with gtk (oxygen-gtk*). Thank you for your help in advance.

@formoza - Please take a look at: https://www.kde.org/announcements/annou … 4.12.0.php - KDE Applications 14.12 is a very strange Most of these apps are based on kdebase-workspace 4.11.14 (KDE4), only few are KF5 based (kate, kwrite, konsole, gwenview, and few more). Dolphin is still KDE4 apps. There is a 3rd party repository with KDE Apps 14.12 in 14.11.97 (RC1) version, look at: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190482
I've allready tried build *-frameworks-git apps from AUR, but it's not possible. Almost all of these apps are build against KF5-git and Plasma5-git, then if you want to build them from AUR, you have to build all KF5-git, Plasma5-git and KDE Apps-git. And... only few more apps will be native Qt5/Plasma5 apps then there're allready in kde-beta repository.
According to: https://dot.kde.org/2014/12/17/kde-appl … orks-ports KDE Team are expecting the porting of applications to Qt 5 and Frameworks 5 to happen over the next year or two.
In the other words, most of KDE Applications 14.12 are bug fixes releases to KDE4.14.2 apps
Personnally, I am user of Plasma5 + KDE Applications from kde-beta repository by arojas. You have to know, that allmost all plasmoids for KDE4 aren't compatibille to Plasma5 platform.

  • Why do my DV files look better when played in MPEG Streamclip than iMovie?

My home movie DV files look washed out (compared to what my tapes looked like I played them on the TV years ago) when played with both iMovie '06 and iMove '11. The claim has been made that if I retransfer my tapes using iMovie '06 (rather than '09, which I used last time, or '11), there will be a dramatic improvement in the visual quality (and there will be some unspecified benefits if I set the dial to 48K audio). HOWEVER, if I play the files I already have in MPEG Streamclip, the visual quality improves substantially without any retransfer. Here is my question: Why? Why do my iMovie-imported files look better in MPEG Streamclip than in iMovie?
Here is my layman's answer: algorithms. When MPEG Streamclip encounters the exact same arrangements of molecules (or whatever), it has some plan for what to do with them that is smarter than what iMovie does. Is this another sign or way that iMovie is not well suited for DV?

Please go to my website where I have posted new instructions on working with DV.
This keeps both interlaced fields from FireWire capture through to a DVD. All the lines means no lost quality when editing DV or Digital8.
It also solves the washed-out color problem.

  • Colours look better in iphoto than on desktop

    Hello all,
I am new to Mac. I'll try to be short.
I used a photo as my desktop background on my macbookpro. However, when I opened the same photo in iphoto, it looks much sharper and the colors are much more vivid than on my desktop background.
I noticed the same thing with all other photos. They look better in iphoto than in Preview for example.
Could someone explain why this is so?
    thanks a lot,
    JM

    JM:
Go to the Monitor section of the System Preferences and see what the color profile the monitor is set to. You can change it to whatever you find via Terence's post and see if it renders more accurately. You can change it to one of several to get what looks best to you.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Easier and better ways to solve current problems with Acrobat?

Is there no better and easier way to solve the problems (installation, re-installing and crashing) with Acrobat? I really think that the ball is in Acrobat's corner right now, because I should not (for example) need to deactivate and re-activate my subscription in order to get AcrobatPro XI to work on my computer, let alone deinstalling an older version that (for now) does work, risking that in the end neither of them work. I need the (great) AdobeCloud applications to do my work as a freelancer, and I really cannot afford this kind of trouble with my applications, nore loose time repairing them. These are difficult times as it is.
    Regards,
    Marc

Sorry, I can't. When I installed it there was no message that said I had to deinstall the old version first, and with other Adobe CC applications there had been no trouble at all, so I installed it with The previous version still on my computer.
After installing, neither of them would start up properly, so I deinstalled version XI, after which the old version worked again, but my Adobe Application Manager does not let me download the XI version a second time, so I cannot try again.
    Regards,
    Marc

  • FLV quality looks better than F4V, what am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
I exported a small clip as a on2vp6 flv, a h.264 f4v, and a h.264 mp4 file with the adobe media encoder cs4. Each file is the same clip, exported with pretty much the same settings. Resolution: 640x480, 0.5mbps target bit rate, 29.97 fps.
Everything I read says that for a given file and a given bitrate, h.264 should provide better video quality when compared to a h.263 flv file. I would like to know what I am doing wrong, because the h.264 files look worse than the flv file. I have provided download links for a short demo clip in each format.
    fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr.f4v
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/af5gc7b/n/fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr_f4v
    fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr.flv
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/af5gc7e/n/fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr_flv
    fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr.mp4
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/af5gc71/n/fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr_mp4
Why does the clip look better in h.263? It seems that everything I encode at low bitrates looks better in h.263 which leads me to believe I am doing something wrong.

Okay, that is true, they are different codecs. But even adobe says:
Q: How does H.264 compare with the current video formats supported in Flash Player?
A: Flash Player supports the Sorenson Spark video codec (based on H.263) and On2 VP6. H.263 is the predecessor of H.264 and was designed for teleconferencing applications, at 64k rates. H.264 delivers even higher quality at lower bitrates. H.264 will deliver the same or better quality when to compared to the same encoding profile in On2. Factors you should consider when choosing a format include the complexity of the content, the desired reach, ability to archive, and licensing considerations.
    at
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flash_Player:9:Update:H.264#Q:_What_is_H.264.3F
Are there any tricks to getting the h.264 to look "better" than the h.263? Like, the h.264 version of the video doesn't even look close to as good, and I think that the f4v version looks worse than the mp4, which I don't really understand since they are both h.264 files. The footage is from a canon XL2 and the original source is ntsc 720x480. Is there anything special I should be doing for encoding in h.264 instead of h.263. The video is going to be only for the web.

The following packages are ported to KF5: kwrite, konsole, gwenview, kate, kalgebra, kanagram, khangman, kig, parley, okteta, kapptemplate. They will replace the corresponding KDE4 version. There are also three additional packages katepart4, konsolepart4 and oktetapart4, which are needed for some KDE4 applications that still use their Kparts. You will need to install them manually if you use any of these apps (e.g. yakuake) before upgrading.

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt
    Thanks

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

  • Why does a DVI or VGA look better than HDMI for 2nd Monitor

Why does a DVI or VGA connection for a program monitor look better than HDMI. I've tested this on several systems with CS5x and CS6. The full screen output from premiere definitely looks worse with HDMI.
I can often see visual differences with the Windows GUI as well, over sharpening of text and lines, harsh rendering of gradients. It looks like a VGA signal displayed on a television.
I've looked at the NVidia stetting and it appears to be set to 1920x1080 at 60hz either way, DVI or HDMI. On one Acer 20 inch monitor the was VGA, HDMI, Composite, Component, and Digital Tuner, but no DVI. The program monitor has always looked blah from the HDMI. So I recently switched the connection to a DVI to VGA adaptor, and now the video looks so much better.
    Any thoughts or explanations?

Just because the monitors accept a 1080P signal doesn't mean their native resolution is 1920x1080. At 20 inch they very likely can scale that signal down to the native resolution of the panel which may be 1600 x 900 or another resolution that is 16 x 9 resolution. That scaling can be done by the GPU or firmware on the Monitor depending on the video driver options and the firmware options. That scaling is also the most common cause to text and icon blurriness you are talking about. As an example there are Pro monitors that accept a 4K signal but scale it down to 2.5K or 2K on the actual panel. You might try going into your video card settings such as Nvidia control panel and look for the scaling options. Select GPU scaling and see if the preview is better. If that doesn't work select no scaling and see if it's better if the monitor firmware handles the scaling.
