KDE can't launch programs unless logged into a TTY

Hi guys, first post here so I suppose I should add some background. I've been using Linux as my primary OS for years, but I'm completely new to Arch. Previously I has mostly used openSUSE, but Tumbleweed spoiled me and made me want a more fleshed-out rolling release distro.
Installation went fine and my system is up and running pretty much as desired, but I have one annoying and somewhat mystifying bug. When I log in to KDE, I won't be able to launch any applications. I can click on the launcher icons in the panel or in Kickoff or KRunner etc, but nothing happens. There aren't even the launch feedback animations in the taskbar that would normally run while launching.
I discovered a partial solution by accident. I figured it was a permissions error, so I switched to a TTY and tweaked the permissions on my home directory. It turns out that *logging into a different TTY session as myself lets KDE launch apps again.*
So, here's the flow:
1) Log in to KDE - Can't launch anything
2) ctrl-alt-F1, login as self
3) ctrl-alt-F7, everything works again
If I switch back to TTY1 and log out, KDE stops working again. Obviously my "solution" isn't much of a solution, does anybody have any insight?
PS: I'm starting KDM at boot via systemd. Is it possible that somehow it isn't starting up correctly? I'm not sure what logfiles to post, but if any are helpful I can.

OK, I managed to fix it. It was related to the hostname not getting set properly. KDE was expecting a display using the hostname I set, but when KDE was logging in the hostname was somehow getting set to localhost. Running (sudo) hostnamectl set-hostname hostname fixed the issue. Logging in to a TTY was somehow magically setting the hostname properly. Weird.

  • Can a single account be logged into more than once at the same time

    -
Firstly, please excuse me if this has already been asked - I tried searching for various terms but couldn't see anything.
At present we run a single account (non-admin) on our iMac G5 which holds all out families photos/music/movies etc. I'm wanting to add a MacBook to our iMac. They would communicate either wirelessly, or via an ethernet hub. We would like to fire up the laptop and log into that same account, so all that information is available (read and write) from both computers, and at the same time.
Is this possible? If so, how is it achieved. Is there some network settings that have to be made on the MacBook?
I'm aware that there will be limitations - i.e. two people won't be able to modify the same file at the same time. Also that the iMac will have to be powered up for the account to be accessed etc.
Finally, due to space considerations I'm wanting to move the home folder for our existing account onto an external FW drive (using the techniques I've found in other posts on this forum). Will this affect any solution to my original question?
    Thanks for your time.

When you turn on file sharing, others can see your computer in the Finder > Go > Network window, where they can click on it to see what shares are available. These can be the public folders (which don't need a password to connect), or user folders (which do). By connecting to one of the shares, they then have access to the files within them. If you don't want to use an external disk, you can use SharePoints to share folders within your account, such as Music or Pictures. Just be aware that sharing files within a user account can run into permissions issues, for example trying to edit a document owned by someone else, which is one of the reasons to use an external disk. Tiger and Leopard also support Access Control Lists, but you need to know what you are doing.

  • Application Explorer won't start unless logged into workstat

Since upgrading all our XP workstations to Zenworks Desktop Management Agent to 7.0.173.90519 (Zenworks7 Sp1R4) some computer's Application Explorer is failing to start properly.
The Application Explorer system tray icon is defective, it does not respond to anything and no application folders are loaded. However it does work ok if you use Workstation Only first then log into Edirectory afterwards
I have tried reinstalling the Desktop Management client, Novell Client, re-registering the workstation and clearing the NAL Cache. The only thing that fixes it is reloading Windows

If you are able to open an SR, I would recommend doing so.
What happens if you set "Application Explorer" so that is does NOT load
    automatically.
    Login Normally.
    Then load "Application Explorer" manually.
If that helps, how are you loading "Application Explorer".

  • How can I set Messages to log into my account when I launch it.

I find it inconvenient to have to have to switch from offline to available each time I start up Messages. Is there a way to auto login in to an account when I start up Messages.

    Hi.
gail from maine may have part of the answer but I an not sure it is all of it.
It seems you are talking about other accounts rather than the iMessages account as the iMessages account is not affected by the "when I Quit..." setting.
This means it should  be AIM, Jabber or Yahoo types.
I would start by using the option in the General Section to Unlink multiple Buddy lists if you use them.
Under the Text Resizing slider is Buddy List stuff starting with Show All Buddy list in one List which is ticked (Enabled) by default.
This should show you the Buddy List as separate windows.  (they are also listed in the Window Menu as separate items).
At the top left of each Buddy List is your Name (or Handle/ID for that Account) pulled from the Contact App  > My Card.
Below that is the Current Status.
If you click this it shows the current Saved Status Messages (including the built in ones) and the iTunes Playing option.
At the bottom you can set to have All Buddy List show the same Message.
As you can see there is an Off Line option.
It should remember any Changes you make.  If it is not it will return to the last setting.
If this is happening you will have lost Permissions to Write to the .plist involved.
Lets us know what is happening with this before we explain how to sort this.
It is getting late where I am and there will be some time (and some drink) before I am bac.

Hi! I did try that, even though II started KDE with the inittab file. But IIt seems problems with dbus.I set variable DISPLAY to :0.And then run X and startkde. It runs successfullyalso tried editing .xinitrc and uncommenting exec startkde, but I still get the errors above when I use startx or startkde.
I also tried reinstalling kdebase-workspace and removing configuration files, but nothing. I actually doubt it's related to KDE, I think it's either xorg and/or catalyst.
There must be something I'm missing.
    Thanks!
Catalyst? It looks like xorg is trying to use an Intel video card?
Do you have both ATI and Intel video card in your sytem?
    Maybe I am worng...
    What makes you think that?
I'm not the OP, by the way! He/she solved this and apparently had the same problem. His/her last post said  "

But I'm not sure of how to do that.
Owe sorry, I thought you were the OP. I got lost in the OP's super long Quote's.
I said that becuase the OP is running an Intel Video card

  • Can I combine my iChat logs into one?

I always disconnect or sign off and close buddy lists and that makes so many chat logs open, how do I combine it into one?

    Hi,
Can you explain what you mean by Logs ?
    1) iChat creates Error Logs and stores them in Your Home Folder (Little house icon)/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors for failed Audio, Video and Screen Sharing attempts.
    2) iChat creates Transcripts of Chats and can store them in your Home Folder/Documents/iChats and then by dated folders  (Personally I wish this could be by Screen Name/ID/Buddy name).
The options in iChat menu > Preferences > Messages refers to Saving Transcripts  (It is automatic in Message beta)
    3) Buddy List and Text chat windows are separate items.
Using the red button top left of any window only closes that window and does not Quit the App.
Closing the Buddy Lists this way Or Logging Off which also clears them Off screen would leave all the Text Chats open (Although marking them you are Off line)
If 3) is the fact you have so many individual Text Chats open (Possibly intending to return to those chats later) and want to have them in in one window will need need us to know which version of iChat you are using.
Some need to use an Add-on called Chax.
Later versions have the option in the ichat Menu > Preferences > General Section > to link/tab the Open Chats (I forget the exact wording)  Basically Apple brought Tabbed Chats to iChat later in the scheme of things

I recently installed the latest of Natron, in /opt/Natron, and added the path to the PATH variable in the .bashrc file,  and i can launch it if I'm on bash, but gmrun and the Openbox menu can't locate the executable when I try to launch it from there. Which is weird, because when i was adding it the Natron directory to the path when it wasn't in the .bashrc, i could then launch Natron just fine from gmrun. Anyone know why this is the case? Any help is appreciated.

.bashrc is only sourced when starting an interactive shell, whereas .bash_profile is sourced when you log in. Try adding the PATH export to your .bash_profile, then log out and back in.

  • Exchange account verifies, but only shows folders unless logged into OWA

I was using iphone 3g with my exchange account perfectly when it was first released in July. During some point after upgrading to 2.0.1 or 2.0.2, I stopped receiving email to my exchange account. After several calls to apple, they advised it was my IT departments problem. However other people in my company are still receiving emails on their iphones.
Today, I realized that when I accessed my OWA account from my PC web browser, an email appeared in my iphone. However, only 1 email out of 9 was downloaded. It happened to be the very email that was highlighted in my inbox on OWA. As I selected other emails from my OWA inbox on my PC, they were instantly pushed to my iphone.
I spoke with some other people in my company who have realized they only receive emails if they leave their Outlook exchange accounts open all the time on their desktops. As soon as they close the outlook program, they stop receiving to the iphone. I don't have a desktop with a constant connection, and check my email via OWA when I can. Therefore, one of the reasons for purchasing Iphone. Not to mention my previous blackberry curve worked fine for me.
I am not sure what this means. I can access OWA fine from my safari browser, or any other browser. I was receiving email all the time before the previously mentioned iphone updates, nothing has changed in my IT department, and If I open OWA and select an email, it will push to my phone.
What does this mean, and how do I get the account to receive without being logged on to OWA? After all, isn't that the whole point of having exchange support on the iphone?
    Thanks in advance

  • How can I change the account logged into game center?

I've been using my friend's account on my ipad to download apps. I just recently made my own apple Id and it works fine with downloading apps. However, when I go to game center it shows her account logged in. I log her out and try to log in with my own apple I'd, but when I touch the sign in button with my id and password entered it comes at me with a popup with her apple Id asking for a password. There's no feat I can change the I'd in this window, my only options are cancel and sign in or whatever and it happens every time I try to log in no matter what I put in the id and password boxes in the game center window. Help?

    Open the Game Center app.
    Choose "Me" at bottom.
    Scroll down
    Tap "Account: [youremail]@[youremailprovider.com]
    Tap "Sign out."
Then sign in with whatever Apple ID you like.

  • Why can't I log into iCloud on my iPad?

When I go to the iCloud.com website on my iPad, I can't log into my iCloud account. The only options are to (a) set up iCloud, which has already been set up on all my devices, (b) Install Find My Phone, which is already installed on my iPad, or (c) Install Find My Friends, which is irrelevant. There is no login window.
A previous thread suggested that installing and using the Find My iPhone app would fix the problem, but it doing so changes nothing on my iPad. What am I missing?

You can use iCab Mobile to log into your iCloud.com account on the iPad. You must identify iCab as a desktop browser. I use iCab Mobile and I identify it as Fire Fox 4.0 for Mac. I can log into my account this way.
I do NOT have iCloud email so I'm not positive that you can log into the email this way, but IF I recall correctly from reading a couple of other posts, it will work.
If you want to take a chance, download iCab for $1.99 (I think). I can tell you this much - it is a superior browser to Safari on the iPad in just about anyway that you can imagine - even if you can't access your iCloud mail.

  • Why can't I log into an app on my ipad when it works on my iphone?  Specifically ones that require my U-verse login to view.

I am unable to use some of the tv viewing apps that require my ATT Uverse login.  They apps such as NBCSports work fine on my iphone, but when I try to use it on my ipad, I get a user not authorized message.
