KDE D-Bus Failure?

Can somebody help me with a user-specific (or so I assume) issue where I can't run KDE apps, but if I run them as root, I can. I'm running OpenBox. Can somebody help using the error below?

  • FireWire 800 and USB bus failure

I am trying to resolve an ongoing issue with my iMac. External storage devices will not stay mounted. I have had data corruption and several drive failures that I believe are attributable to the sudden loss of connection to the computer. It can not be that all my drives – there have been five – are faulty. My newest drive, an OWC Mercury Elite Pro connected to the FireWire 800 bus, is beginning to exhibit the same behavior, and this drive is less than a month old.
What possible explanations are there for a FireWire or USB bus to suddenly drop a connected hard drive?
    Thanks in advance.

Simplest explanation? Your iMac has a hardware failure. Take it in for service. It's probably NOT a software issue but a hardware failure.
Can we assume you have tried new or different cables?

  • Black screen on MacPro1,1: PCI bus failure?

I have a MacPro1,1 (the original 2006 model) running OS X 10.7.5. This machine has functioned reliably for 8 years. But last night the display went black (NEC PA-271W, driven by an Apple ATI Radeon 5770). My trouble-shooting tests so far:
Restart Mac Pro. Restart in Safe Boot mode. Restart in Single-User mode. Restart from a clone backup. Waited for hardware to cool down and tried again. No love. Screen never lights up.
Attached display to a MacBook Pro, using same cable and DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Monitor works correctly.
I can run the Mac Pro via screen sharing from my MBP. So the system and hard disk seem to be OK.
I accessed the Mac Pro via screen sharing and read its System Report
About This Mac > More Info > System Report
    What I saw was disturbing:
    Graphics/Displays: No information found.
PCI Cards: This computer doesn't contain any PCI cards.
I tried re-seating the ATI Radion 5770, and tried inserting another card that I had on hand (Nvidia GeForce 8800GT) in a different slot. The info in System Report remained the same.
Does this look like a hardware failure? Power supply gone south? Is there any type of hardware diagnostic software that I can run on a headless Mac? I don't want to spend any significant money on repairing this old beast, since I was planning to replace it this year.

The Mac Pro lives on.  It was the ATI Radeon 5700 video card that died.  I pulled it out of the PCI slot, and then the Mac was able to see the other video card.  So it looks like the Radeon had an internal failure (short circuit?) which was causing an abnormal current drain from the mother board.  The Mac shut down the PCI bus to protect itself.

  • USB bus failure at random on Mac Pro 3,1

    Early 2008 2x2.8 Ghz Quad
    Mac Pro 3,1
Since I upgraded to (the latest version of) Mavericks (from 6.8) I'm getting random indefinite USB bus hangs. Frequency: Every 1 to 3 days. Does not seem related to any kind of process. Most of the time it's happening while the computer is idling, but not necessarily. Apparently that's just because I'm more off than on on average.
What's going on? All of a sudden, all USB input hardware becomes unresponsive, but not without power. Can't toggle caps lock. Mouse freezes (but light is still on), graphic tablet won't work. Even when connecting without a hub. However, the system is not frozen and reacts with a dialog box when touching the reset button. But a hard reset is the only option at this point.
I read about USB problems, but not like this!
    Please advise.

It seems that a wired mighty mouse was at fault. Its track ball / scroll wheel was defect after two months (as it happened with so many mighty mice before) and after I replaced it with a different brand the USB freeze never happened again.

  • Card bus failure? on T-30

I lost the NIC port on my older T-30.  Trying a D-Link Card Bus Ethernet card and none of the LEDs light up.  bad card? or bad slot??    Tried a hardware search for the D-Link, no help.      It is a 2367 with Xp Pro.  probably first card ever used.      thanks.

I managed to try a  Dlink wireless card and it lights up.   good slot, bad  first card.   both cards are so old, I will toss them.

  • Complete IDE bus failure?

Okay, all of my problems are pointing to a faulty IDE bus.
One goal: To install Panther/Tiger through XPostFacto.
But... the problems occur far before I ever get to mounting a disk.
After doing a basic install of Mac OS 9, I could no longer see my hard drive. I reset the PRAM.
Now I can see the hard drive and the DVD drive.
I install XPostFacto and boot from the Mac OS X disc.
The installation stops at "Configuring Installation." The disc spins down and then there is no light on my drive.
    I restart the Mac.
I see no DVD. When I boot the machine, the DVD drive will spin, and then stop, and no further response comes from it.
I restart and reset the PRAM again.
Same problem. No response from the DVD drive.
CUDA button. NVRAM reset. PRAM reset. Start from the C key. Nothing works. At all. The lithium battery is brand new. The RAM is fine.
I think this beige has just about had it. It's ten years old. It was a reliable computer until now. Just thought I'd give it one last chance at life.
Curiously, it now boots into OS 9 without a hitch (from the hard drive). It does not recognize any other drive.
I don't know about you, but I'm not about to use OS 9 anytime soon.

Found a workaround to the problem.
    1. I removed the DVD drive from the secondary IDE bus and moved it to the primary IDE bus as a slave drive. A lot of cables had to be reorganized because the DVD drive must remain in the top half of the case. The primary hard drive was also moved, but remained the master drive on the primary IDE bus.
    2. I held the CUDA button for 30 seconds.
    3. Booted in Mac OS 9 and put in my Mac OS X Tiger DVD. The drive was finally recognized. I opened XPostFacto (latest version) and went through the install process.
    4. The system restarted, but in verbose mode only. (I didn't get the nice Mac OS X logo, just a series of text, but this is fine, since I can see what is going on during boot.) I went through the Mac OS X Tiger installation procedure. This took about an hour and a half to complete.
    5. System restarted. I tried to use Software Update to install updates, but it froze during the process. I force rebooted and then manually downloaded the updates. Those installed fine.
    6. Restart. The computer didn't like the new updates at first and halted during boot. I force restarted. The Mac boots fine now... it just takes a LONG time. About 3-4 minutes.
    7. Mac OS X Tiger is now running on my Beige G3 Gossamer. I only have 384MB of RAM, so there is a long wait for some things. Dashboard works fine, but I don't get those nice liquid effects. Spotlight takes 5 HOURS to index! After that, it works fine, just a tad slow.
    8. I put in a second hard drive in, a single hard drive on the secondary IDE bus. There seems to be no problems for now, but I will have to keep an eye on it. The Mac is really fussy after all of this hardware and software surgery.
    WHEW!

  • Serious boot issues with Powerbook G3 (Wallstreet II, OS 9.2.2)

    Hello,
I have major issues with a Powerbook Wallstreet II I got recently. When it's finally running, it works just as well as Wallstreet Powerbooks usually do, no errors, no crashing, smooth performance, everything fine.
But booting it up is, to put it mildy, a bloody pain. First off, it does not power up, when it's only connected to batteries. I have two of them, both working fine for several hours when put in after bootup, but no matter if I place one or both of them in any bays, nothing happens when pressing or holding the power button (apart from screen flickering and speaker crackling). I'm always forced to connect the power adapter, which immediatly (without pressing the power button) causes the power LED to light and the cooling fan insanely spins up for a mere couple of split seconds until everything wents silent again.
Having reached this point, I can disconnect the power supply (if at least one battery is in) and usually hear a nice "BONG" when pressing the power button once again. Thereafter, nothing happens for a oppressive 30 seconds, then, the screen finally lits and shows the Mac OS 9.2.x splash screen on monochrome background. Sadly, this is already the end of most of my first boot up tries, because at this point, I usually get told by a dialogbox that a bus error has just happened. The box also has a nice "Reboot" button, which I cannot click as the trackpad hangs as well.
Pressing ShiftFn+CrtlPower works here in about one out of three time, so in most cases, I have to go through the same procedure. Pull out power sources, give a shot via PSU, have it iddling for 30 secs. In most cases, this second try lets me pass splash screen, loader, yes, it even lets me see the desktop, the taskbar, the HDD icon and... pouf. Success is so close but no, it has to suddenly drop into sleep mode and
a short press on power proves the apprehension true, that it won't be easy to wake it up again. Hrmph. But I don't give that easily. So pulling everthing out for the second time, connect PSU for the third time and look there, it fully boots.
Three tries to successfully boot is about average at first try series. Afterwards, it seems to be "warmed up" and things get easier. I made a log recently with 5 test series, made at very frequent intervals:
    Series 1:
    1. Bootup: Bus Failure (Hard reboot fails) (bays empty)
    2. Bootup: Sleep Mode (bays empty)
    3. Bootup: Sleep Mode (bays empty)
    4. Bootup: Sleep Mode (both batteries)
    5. Bootup: Bus Failure (Hard reboot successful)(both batteries)
    6. Bootup: Success (left battery, right bay empty)
    Series 2:
    1. Bootup: Success(left battery, right bay empty)
    Series 3:
    1. Bootup: Bus Failure (!!!) (left battery, right bay empty)
    2. Bootup: Success (bays empty)
    Series 4:
    1. Bootup Success (left bay empty, right battery)
    Series 5:
    1. Bootup Success (both batteries)
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

    jpl,
    Thank you for continuative support.
If you plan on buying a 256MB memory module, the Wallstreet requires
a 256 specifically made for it (and the early iMac
and Lombard). Modules 128MB and smaller can be
generic if they meet the Wallstreet's specs.
    Thanks for this information.
You might find it useful to disassemble the 'book to the PMU, carefully remove/reseat the PMU card, then test.
Well, to be honest, I don't have the time to perform this very labour-intensive work. However, I pulled out the large PMU connector (the one that can be reached by lifting the keyboard) and reseated it, without any results. Shouldn't that suffice? Or is there another connection that could need maintenance?
Regarding sleep: There is no display position sensor, only a simple magnet in the right display bezel approximately 4" from the bottom...you can stick a paperclip to it. When the display closes, it triggers a sleep switch located next to the delete key in the side rail.
    Ah, okay.
According to Apple, if the powerbook will not run on battery, it could be the charge card or PMU board or power supply card or logic board. However, your 'book apparently runs on battery once started via power adapter.
Actually, it does not allow me to power up, if I attach the adapter right after an unsuccessful try to operate from battery. Even if I remove the batteries (after adapter connection).
It's like it is "crashed" before it's even running. Which means, I have to pull all power sources to be able to perform the resuscitating power up via adaptor.
A normal power manager reset on the Wallstreet is this:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Simultaneously press Shift-Fn (function)-Ctrl >(control)-Power.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the PowerBook >computer.
A successful reset will briefly flash the sleep light plus >spin up the fan for a second. If a reset does not solve the >startup and sleep issues, then you will have to look >elsewhere.
I can see the sleep LED and I do hear the fan, however, this didn't help in most cases. After perfoming this action (in a freeze situation), I usually only got rattling noises out of the speakers or screen flashes when trying to power up.
Be sure the powerbook only freezes when closing the display to sleep it.
Well, I noticed it sometimes also freezes when left idle directly after start up (and power save is activated). Later, it comes right back again.
    - Is the sleep light blinking before you open the display?
    Yes.
    - When the display is opened, does the sleep light continue to blink? (It should.)
    Yes.
    - When you press the power button, do you hear a 'buzz' or some similar noise? If you do, you may have another issue to explore.
No. I usually only hear speaker noise when trying to power up from battery. But oddly enough, the lenght of the sleep light blinks changes when power button is hold down in "frozen sleep".
I would also go to the System Folder > Preferences folder and drag the Energy Saver Preferences to the Trash, close all windows, then restart...a new preference file will be created on restart. You can reset the Energy Saver to your like, then test sleep.
    Done.
-Does sleep/wake always work when NOT closing the display? Try this after resetting the power manager and trashing the pref file mentioned below.
If I initiate sleep, yes. If it suspends automatically, well, usually. But not always (see above).

  • Transactional Messaging Problem

    Hi,
The problem I am facing is, I have multiple publishers that can send the same type of messages to the topics and mutiple subscribers are receiving the messages (many-to-many). Suppose the publisher makes changes to a database row, and then send a message to the topic reflecting that change. At the same time, another publisher makes changes to the same database row and then send a message to the topic. If there is no transaction involved on the publisher side, it is possible that the second publisher's message arrives at subscriber side first. This could potentially cause trouble on the subscriber side. How can I guarantee the order of the messages published into the topic? In a situation where message service is down and my publisher has the ability to resend the message after service is back alive, the message it is sending will obviously out of order. So what is the best approach to this kind of problem? How can I ensure the right order delivered to the other end of message pipe? Thanks.

    Hi,
You are right by saying that updating your database and publishing your messages within the scope of a transaction will solve your problem. But however, you need to use the right database transactional model. The best one to go for is the strict serialisation model that will guarantee you that write operations are strictly done sequentially and then that your messages are published in the right order. Note that this model has a certain degree of overhead that you may be able to relax so that to improve performance.
On the messaging side you will need to use a XA compliant JMS provider as well as a transaction manager. You can achieve that by using an app server or you can use a MDS (message driven service) container. For example, Arjuna provides such a container (http://www.arjuna.com/products/arjunams/tutorials/mds/index.html) that is roughly speaking a light weight MDB container that provides you with concurrent message processing as well as container managed transactions. The MDS container comes with a full JTA compliant transaction manager.
Note that in the event of a database or a JMS bus failure you will rollback your transaction and take the necessary action that could simply be re-trying later or waiting for the faulty resource to reboot.
    Hope this helps,
    Arnaud

  • Status LED Flashes 5 times?

There are only nine terminal bases in the back and no terminal bases were added to the bank while the power was supplied. Is there any other reason for this error? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The status light flashing 5 times means different things for different network modules. Without knowing which network module you are using, I can not provide specific information.
It is most commonly seen with the FP-1000/1001 Serial Network modules when an I/O module is unrecognizable. This can happen in the following circumstances:
    1) A module that may have been connected previously was not available when Find Devices! was issued.
    2) The firmware of the network module may not be updated to support the I/O module. For the latest driver version of a FP-1000/1001, the link is:
    ftp://ftp.ni.com/support/fieldpoint/Update/FPupdate.zip
    3) There may be 10 bases on a bus but the system only supports up to 9.
    4) There may be a bent pin at the point where the module connect
    s to the base.
    5) The terminal bases were connected or disconnected with power applied resulting in a bus failure condition.

    Aaron

  • Fault Tolerance of NFS and iSCSI

    Hello,
I'm currently designing a new datacenter core environment. In this case there are also nexus 5548 with FEXs involved. On this fex's there are some servers which speak NFS and iSCSI.
While changing the core component there will be a disruption between the servers.
What ks the maximim timeout a NFS or iSCSI protocoll can handle while changing the components. Maybe there will be disruption for a maximimum of 1 sekond.

  • Dbus/KDE wont start! EOF in dbus-launch reading address from bus daemo

Help! I'm not sure what I did, but now nothing that needs dbus will work, including KDE and all KDE apps, VLC, and alot of other programs as well.
I am using KDEmod (not sure if this makes a difference for my particular issue)
The error i am always getting is:
Could not connect to D-Bus server: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ExecFailed: dbus-launch failed to autolaunch D-Bus session: EOF in dbus-launch reading address from bus daemon
This happened some time around my last KDEmod upgrade to KDE 4.3, but i'm not sure if this had anything to do with it or not. I also may or may not have carelessly overwritten some vital configuration file with a .pacnew not understanding what I was doing (Still getting the hang of the ways Arch, although I must say I'm hooked for life)
I've hunted around for clues, and haven't found anything useful, and all my drives have plenty of free space. I've tried clearing out /tmp to no avail, and it's making me so sad! Reinstalling dbus hasn't helped either. I've been having alot of nostalgic fun using e16 in the meantime, but I miss KDE and most of my programs, does anyone have any idea what's going on?
    Thanks!
    Victor
EDIT: I have tried things suggested on this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=586491 without effect

I'm not absolutely sure but it shouldnt be wrong. I just remember XFCE4 also complained about dbus, been a while though. Ensure dbus is in the daemons array of rc.conf and/or start the daemon explictely,
If it still doesnt work I run out of ideas
