[KDE] Dolphin no showing metadata

Hi all;
I noticed recently that dolphin no longer shows any metadata when selecting a image or video. It used to display info like image/video size, some exif data, length etc etc.
Anyone know what caused this functionality to be lost?
System is kept upto date.

Hmmm thats good to know. There also appears to be an issue that my some of my directories are softlinked. For example my downloads is actually at /mnt/disk/Downloads by I have a link to /home/username/Downloads. If i navigate to the /home I do not get metadata, but if I go to /mnt I do.  I will file in KDE bug about this lack of proper location resolution.
Thanks for pointing me to that!

  • HDV Print to Video not showing metadata

I'm running Final Cut Studio 2 and a Canon HV20 camcorder. I'm trying to consolidate footage from one tape to a new tape using "Print to Video" but the metadata such as date and time doesn't transfer. It works perfectly when I tested with DV format (consolidating 1 DV to another) but HDV only transfers video and audio with no metadata, and I'm guessing timecode too but I'm not sure. The original tape shows metadata.
I'ved tried with different settings. Captured using HDV Firewire, HDV Firewire Basic, HDV Firewire Basic NDF, AIC and print to video using HDV (1440 x 1080) 60i. They all record to tape fine but no metadata. I've even tried capturing and export to tape using iMovie with the same results (only video and audio with no metadata/timecode). What am I doing wrong?

Nope, I'm not talking about photo EXIF metadata, I'm talking about actual video. If I play DV or HDV tapes on my camcorder the date and time of the recording displays in the lower right hand corner of the LCD screen and the time even changes based upon when it was recorded. I've owned 3 DV camcorders and used friend's and they all do this.
When recording DV or HDV the date and time is registered somewhere. Even the new iMovie '08 will name the clips you import by date and time shot for DV or HDV (ex. clip-2003-02-09 13;57;34.dv).
Again, I can import any DV tape (video) now, export it to another tape, play it and the date and time of when it was recorded is retained, even if I rearrange it's order in iMovie or FCP. This is something I've done for years. I just can't accomplish it with HDV. I'm sure it can be done I just need to see what I'm doing wrong in the chain.
Please don't let my use of the word metadata confuse you that I think it's photo EXIF metadata. I used the word metadata because it just means "a set of data that describes and gives information about other data."
    Thanks.

Lightroom is not saving metadata. I have done several things to save and I still get the tag that states is is not saved. I have also created 2 smart collections. One showing metadata has been changed and one showing metadata is not up to date. No matter what I do it is not showing in LR that it is saved. I spent 2 days with Seth Resnick trying to correct this and we re created my catalog. It was ok, until I imported new images and same problem. Now I have a new problem, when I bring image to PS it saves it but does not bring back to LR. Am I the only one out there who has this problem?

    Hey everyone!
I installed a fresh Arch with KDE on my new laptop and now KDE doesn't show, when a CD gets inserted. I can mount the CD via console and all works fine, but I can't mount it via KDE, because it doesn't show up the notification. USB devices working fine. Has someone an idea?

i'm not sure if it's a bug or a missing feature in arch but in the panel's places of Dolphin all my LVM partitions are labeled « X GB hard drive » even if they have a real label name. is anyone having the same problem ?
I take some time to find a solution, not sure if it's a problem of my configuration, a missing feature, a arch bug or a kde bug... If it's one i can open a bug in the system
I'm actually on KDE 4.8.90 but it was too in previous version

I aggree with you : it's only a partial issue as those partitions are mounted under /media with their label name.
As krusader is able to retrieve the label name i don't think it's an udisks issue so it's more related to a kde functionnality. I looked for missing (optionnal or not) dependencies but without success.
Any idea is welcome... perhaps opening a bug could help ??
I have run out of ideas.
If you tried krusader, yes, it is quite safe to assume it is not a udisks problem, since I tried nautilus which uses udisks2. I also would rule out udev/systemd. Leaves solid, kdelibs, and the kdebase sources.
As said, on gentoo, kdelibs are compiled with udev dependency which I have not seen in the pkgbuild for kdelibs.
I think a bug report is a good idea.

I am guessing that you probably need to change either the Locale or the encoding info (i.e. UTF-8) in the Locale.  Also possibly, (but less likely IMO) a change in fonts would fix the issue.

  • [kde] dolphin has an inactive search panel and no fancy search options

    Hi there,
I've recently seen a great movie about 'smart folders' in kde. Anyway the idea was to save search results as a place in dolphin. Tried it, but I discovered my 'find' options are limited (e.g. I can't add multiple search conditions) and the new search panel options are all inactive.
Also the file grouping in View>Show in groups is inactive. I'm somewhat sure it's connected with the unavailability of find options.
I positive nepomuk and stringi are running. I'm probably missing some packets, though I can't riddle out witch ones.
    Help and guidance appreciated.
    Greetz

I sow the spot, but that isn't anything new because that is just combination "Find tool" (activated by pressing Ctrl plus F) and "Folder View" widgets! I'm nor sure, but it might need to have installed "extra/kdebase-kfind", I have not tested it without that.
In the picture that you posted, the right Toolbar (with options Documets, Video ...) was called "Filter" in previous version of Dolphin but now it's named "Search". That tool works on my computer, but that isn't much useful, because results are always same independently on folder - it shows filtered files from all my data. That took a while, since I started Nepomuk and Strigi, to get it active.
If you look to the help by pressing F1 in Dolphin and go to "The Dolphin Handbook" - "Quick Tips" - "Searching in Files", you realised that Dolphin "Search tool" doesn't do what it is supposed to do!

  • KDE Dolphin's "Places" vs. symbolic links

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo on my home network and it is comfigured to share via CFS (NFS is disabled).  From what I can tell this device is running a chopped down version of Debian.  If I create a link to a share using KDE's GUI tools, the share link appears in Dolphin's "Places".  While this is nice and convenient for when you're in Dolphin, it appears almost useless for anything else.  No other apps see the link to the share in their dialog boxes.  So I decided to go with the method of creating an empty directory (~/archives) and then I put in the applicable entry in /etc/fstab.  After discovering the noauto option for fstab, this works fine.
Here is where I am scratching my head:  As an example I have a directory within the share that is named "(1979) - Degüello".  When navigating the file tree using the Places link, the umlaut shows just fine.  However, when doing this via my mountpoint, the umlaut shows up as a symbol that looks like a question mark inside of a black diamond.  And I just noticed that it appears I have read-only access through the mountpoint, but full r/w access through places.
Am I not getting to my destination via smb in both cases?  And if I am, why am I seeing these discrepencies?  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Here's an example where I just added an indice to the end of the file name if an item already exists with that name in the chosen folder.
    tell application "Finder"
    set the_sel to selection
    end tell
    if the_sel is {} then
    display dialog "Nothing was selected."
    return
    end if
set folder_path to (choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder for the alias:") as string -- or make a new one
    repeat with this_item in the_sel
set this_item to this_item as alias
set item_name to name of (info for this_item)
    set i to 0
    set t to ""
    tell application "Finder"
    repeat while exists item (folder_path & item_name & t)
    set i to i + 1
    set t to "_" & i
    end repeat
    end tell
    set target_path to quoted form of POSIX path of (folder_path & item_name & t)
set source_path to quoted form of POSIX path of this_item
    do shell script "ln -s " & source_path & space & target_path
    end repeat
display dialog "The alias' have been created."
You might need to add error checking.

I mean, that pink color must be transparent, right?
is it a normal behavior or no?
    Thanks

Bitmaps don't have an alpha channel. Let me guess, the source image is a .ico file? If so KDE is using the first layer which can be a bitmap without alpha channel. Could be worse, id could have supplied a 4 color version of the icon ;-) Try to extract the single images out of the ico file.
Edit: Just saw on your screenshot that the source file is a plain bitmap not an .ico. This behavior is normal, thats what they used to achieve transparency before the windows shell got alpha support. KDE wont draw that color transparent the result wouldn't be as smooth as real transparency with alpha anyway.

There's no terminal output during the stutters; and nothing else really seems to stand out. There's plenty of free RAM, no swap hits, and the laptop is well cooled. This happens on both a partition mounted via ntfs-3g as well as my / mounted on ext4.
What's more, I've tried the file ops with thunar (within KDE) and everything happens without problem.
    KDE 4.10.5 on kernel 3.10.3.

It turns out I forgot that folder is mounted on my HDD, not the SSD, so it was an actual copy to destination -> delete source operation.
Preview is off, and I disabled the indexer (it wasn't producing any CPU activity anyway), still same problem.
Dolphin is by far the slowest file manager according to my tests:
    Setup:
copy 13k icons ext4 SSD -> ext4 HDD, destination folder deleted between runs. Each file manager tested 3 times
    Results:
    dolphin: 1:23
    thunar: 1:17
    nautilus: 0:26
    windows exlorer: 0:14
    pcmanfm: 0:10
    command line: 0:02
Double the numbers for move (I guess that's because it has to delete the files as well). Here's hoping they can figure out how to speed it up with the KDE5 dolphin port...
edit: added windows explorer for comparison. It does quite well, surprisingly.

  • [SOLVED] Upgrading to KDE 4.8 shows "kdmrc.pacnew"

    Hello
    first sorry for my english
12 hours ago I did a # pacman-Syu and it appears the update to kde4.8.
Some 500 mb later, no error in the update, review the log file in the same console and see a line saying that the downloaded file / usr / share / config / kdm / kdmrc is installed as / usr / share / config / kdm / kdmrc.pacnew
I know the purpose of this is to rename kdmrc.pacnew to kdmrc if no changes or if I have customized the kdmrc, so I make a Kompare of the two files to check ... and. .. my surprise ... the former has 71 lines and kdmrc.pacnew ...591! so I do not know what to compare ... half of the lines of the old kdmrc match but the rest are new and most commented (indicating uncomment to use different options than the default)
What should I do? Do I need to rename the old. "Old" (for example) and "kdmrc.pacnew" moved to "kdmrc"?
I left the pc switched on until a response ... I dare not to shut down
    regards and thanks
    P. S. Kompare application is curious ... What will the "apply the difference"? ¿Merge the old configuration with the new?

guelfi wrote:Then why don't you do this? If you didn't customize kdmrc, it is completely safe to rename the kdmrc to kdmrc.pacnew. If you did, your changes will be lost. That's the worst thing that could happen, because the new kdmrc will work (as it is the stock kdmrc).
I don't know the changes to kdm with kde 4.8 (I don't even use kde), but I think kdm is more likely to break if you don't use the new config.
    Thanks guelfi...
I'm agree with you... I think I didn't customize kdmrc (maybe the kdm theme and the default user to show). Only I would like if someone did the renaming without issues and if I must to merge the files for more security.
    Thanks again

  • Kde/dolphin and thunar - different encoding settings?

    Hi,
I'm using unison to keep my files synchronized between the different machines I'm working at.
On all I use thunar except for one on that I'm running kde.
What I've noticed it that thunar and kde seem to use a different encoding when mounting an usb flashdrive because unison wants to sync files that weren't changed because of umlauts. So for unison they seem to be different because of their name.
Where's the place to look at for setting up the same encoding  (I assume utf8?) for all systems/DEs?
    Thanks!

Yes, it's a FAT filesystem (need it for file exchange with other OS).
So, one of the bot filmanagers is using utf8 by default? I don't know which one because I see the umlauts with both, only unison says the files are differently named.
Where can I put the utf8 option in dolphin/thunar? I don't want to use a fstab entry for flash drives.
As you can see, flash drives aren't my best friends ;b Tried udev rules several time but with no success.
