KDE Fails To Start / Defaults To tty1 Login [SOLVED]

Over the summer I put myself on a Linux crash course by installing Arch Linux on my HP 3105m. It went without a hitch. A month Later, I reinstalled to try out KDE, and with a little work, I got it up and running. I liked that setup so much that I have been attempting to install Arch onto my Desktop for a week now, but I can't get past the terminal. The screen flashes the terminal login screen, goes black as if X11 is starting, then returns to the terminal login. I have been scraping the forums pretty hard, and have reinstalled Arch about six times in the process. I can run
startx
and start applications from xterm, which is kind of cool, but not ideal.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the forum threads I have already read:

  • File sharing service fails to start without a user login.

    Using a Mac mini as a basic file & print server which is accessed by a variety of other platforms; primarily Windows XP.
    Recently, however, the file sharing has stopped running automatically despite the settings all being 'present & correct'.
    Platform is run as follows:
    - 10.5.8 Leopard (the client and NOT the server version)
    - 'headless' i.e. no keyboard, mouse or monitor
    - has two active admin accounts (one is root) and a single user account.
    - Login is via the welcome screen i.e. no default user/automatic login takes place.
    Interestingly, when a default login account is enabled, the file sharing service works fine. However, this is a work around and not a fix so I am really looking to get the file sharing working without having to 'fudge' it this way; please bear in mind when replying.
    To add to the frustration, although the file sharing has worked in the past without a hitch in this configuration, I cannot think of any changes made that would hinder this function. Additionally, the print service also runs without a problem without the need to login otherwise.
    All help gratefully appreciated.

    Since the problem is before a user logs in, I suspect one of these files...

  • [SOLVED] KDE fails to start (kdeinit4)

    Hi everyone,
    I installed KDE 4.5 today, and when I start the session, it displays the splash screen but crash and show me the error message

    I already looked for information in the wiki and google, and I'm really lost.
    Thanks for you help.

    I fixed. The solution is to edit /usr/bin/startkde:
    LD_BIND_NOW=true /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/start_kdeinit_wrapper +kcminit_startup
    if test $? -ne 0; then
    # Startup error
    echo 'startkde: Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation.' 1>&2
    test -n "$ksplash_pid" && kill "$ksplash_pid" 2>/dev/null
    xmessage -geometry 500x100 "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation$
    exit 1
    fi
    and break the line:
    LD_BIND_NOW=true
    /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/start_kdeinit_wrapper +kcminit_startup
    That's all

  • Lighttpd fails to start - no error messages given [solved]

    Lighttpd stopped working all of a sudden.  I removed it, nuked /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf and re-installed lighttpd and using the default /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf from the PKG with no modifications.  When I attempt to start it, I get a FAIL message and nothing in /var/log/lighttpd at all (empty directory).
    # rc.d start lighttpd
    :: Checking configuration [DONE]
    :: Starting lighttpd [FAIL]
    That said, I can manually run the following and the daemon works just fine:
    # /usr/sbin/lighttpd-angel -D -f /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf
    This is on i686 if that matters... thoughts are welcomed
    EDIT: AH!  Turns out there was a stale pid file ---> /var/run/lighttpd/lighttpd-angel.pid for some reason preventing the daemon from running.  Perhaps we need to add a stale pid check to /etc/rc.d/lighttpd.  Opened https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/26270

  • Systemd-logind occasionally fails to start

    Hi,
    I am running Arch with Cinnamon started by mdm-display-manager. I had this running for quite some time without an issue.
    Recently an issue popped out - OCCASIONALLY systemd-logind fails to start and I get stuck on boot screen. This happens maybe once in 5-10 boots. I have to do hard reset afterwards. CTL+ALT+DEL won't work, I can not switch to other console and I have no network to SSH to that machine.
    Other than that, system starts just fine.
    I am not sure, how to debug this further and would appreciate advice.

    Hi,
    I have exactly the same problem. systemd-logind sporadically fails to start, therefore preventing the login prompt to appear. Resetting the machine is the only solution in that case. Most of the time, the system start works without problems though. Here are a few relevant lines from my logs:
    # journalctl --unit=systemd-logind | grep -C50 'Connection timed out'
    -- Reboot --
    Apr 22 10:16:36 deltaflyer systemd[1]: Starting Login Service...

  • [solved]Network fails to start sometimes

    Hello!
    I'm having a problem with my network. Sometimes it fails to start. Usually, a reboot solves this. Here is the error log:
    [root@claudia log]# cat errors.log
    Aug 6 03:16:28 claudia dhcpcd[3194]: dhcpStart: interface eth0 is not Ethernet or 802.2 Token Ring
    rc.conf:

    # Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
    # - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it
    # - no hyphens in your interface names - Bash doesn't like it
    # Note: to use DHCP, set your interface to be "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    # Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each route then list in ROUTES
    # - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it

    #<ip> <hostname> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost claudia
    # End of file
    What should I do to solve this?
    Thanks and regards,
    Gustavo

    I'd say it's because since the ethernet over firewire module is loaded too,   it's counted as a network device too - and which one gets to be eth0 depends if the NIC or ethernet over firewire module is loaded first. There are many solutions to this:
    1) If you don't need ethernet over firewire, keep it from being loaded by putting the module name (eth1394 I think) in MOD_BLACKLIST in /etc/rc.conf, like this:
    MOD_BLACKLIST=(eth1394)
    2) You can make both eth0 and eth1 (and perhaps other NICs too) start up together (I do this with my 2 NICs). To do that, make the rc.conf network section something like this:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0 eth1)
    Then you should put a @ in front of "network" ( @network ) in the DAEMONS array unless you like waiting for a NIC that won't start

  • KDE won't start after kdm login

    Hello,
    I'm new Arch Linux user,
    After a successful fresh installation, setting things up, installing KDE and some other stuff, ... A day after, KDE failed to load just after KDM successful login.
    It almost shows the KDE's splash-screen, and then it fails and returns to KDM! However, login via terminal succeed but can't start KDE nor startX.
      - I've tried every thread out there, searched the Wiki, the forums, tried every possible thing I found...
      - Removed and reinstalled KDE, removed the very last packages I installed, updated the fonts cache, created a new user to test if it's a login issue,
      - Restarted the services with systemctl.
    Just got NOTHING.
    I can post commands output here, just tell what command.
    P.S. I don't have nVideo graphic card, so this is not that issue mentioned on the Wiki (though, I even tried the solution provided there).
    P.S.2. Bye the way, this happened on Kubuntu as well, just before I formated and decided to move to Arch.

    Welcome to Arch!
    Just to confirm, you see the same issue with a fresh user account? So anything you modified in your home directory can be ruled out as a cause?
    Did you make any changes to /etc/skel/? That would affect new accounts as well.
    Look in the logs for clues. In this case the Xorg and kdm logs might be helpful, if they exist. journalctl can also be filtered for relevant messages.
    Can you start X/KDE from the command line? That is, without starting KDM?
    Did you run pacman to update the system? If so, what was updated? (pacman.log will tell you.)

    I went to do an iTunes upgrade and got an error message that it could not be found? It suggested I uninstall and reinstall my iTunes.  After a failed attempt, I realized the location was set to the default hard drive of C:, so I tried again by changing the location to my external hard drive.  Now I get an error message that says:

    Hello staceonbass,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    For more information on this, take a look at:
    iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
    Check for .dll files
    Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
    If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
    Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
    Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
    Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

    I use autologin to console (and then to X via bash_profile) and there is no glitch except that I find that getting to desktop takes a little longer these days. Thought it is due to psd. I have no idea when this happened as things have been OK.
    Any advice? I suspect that cron's failure is due to this issue though honestly I have no basis to think so. Systemctl shows cronie.service loaded and running. System is up to date.

    With all the changes over the past year, I have been wanting to set up a fresh installation to remove any old issues that might not have been properly dealt with over time. This current issue, and the fact that the move to consolidate everything to /usr/bin has happened, tilted the balance.
    New installation, login is OK, no repeated messages from systemd-logind, cronie is working.
    Why the problems, I have no idea. But the new installation is working well.

    Updating system with pacman didn't solve it.
    Did I miss something out while migrating to systemd, is it a problem with SLiM or user session maybe ? Do you guys have any ideas where to start ? Thanks.

    Is there any way of reinstalling parts of systemd like logind.service?

  • [SOLVED] Firefox won't start - "Failed to execute default Web Browser"

    I've just updgraded from Firefox 3 to version 4 (by running "pacman -Syu") on my 64-bit Arch installation.  I started XFCE and Firefox 4 worked fine for a few minutes before crashing and closing automatically.
    A short while later (long enough to forget exactly what I was doing when it crashed!) I tried to run it again, but got the error message Failed to execute default Web Browser. / Input/output error.
    I've tried rebooting the PC and re-installing firefox & firefox-i18n, but still get the same error.  If I run "firefox" from a terminal window, I get the following response:
    OpenOffice path before fixup is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
    OpenOffice path is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
    *** NSPlugin Wrapper *** WARNING:(/build/src/nspluginwrapper-1.3.0/src/npw-wrapper.c:3160):invoke_NP_Initialize: assertion failed: (rpc_method_invoke_possible(g_rpc_connection))
    NOTE: child process received `Goodbye', closing down
    OpenOffice path before fixup is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
    OpenOffice path is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
    firefox: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libvlcplugin.so: undefined symbol: NPP_Initialize
    I'm not sure why there are so many references to "OpenOffice"...
    Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to get Firefox working again?  (Thanks in advance!)

    Thanks for that.  After I posted my last message, Firefox crashed again on a website containing embedded video.  I disabled the add-on, but when VLC was updated, I guess it installed and enabled the add-on again.  Firefox worked fine initially, but I've just tried to open it again and the same "input/output error" message appeared.  I rebooted, but the problem persisted.
    Uninstalling the vlc-plugin package seems to have resolved that, though.

  • Keyboard and mousse dont work on login screen, recovery failed to start

    one of the best ever, im trying not to throw this laptop through the window . not because im being reasonable, but because I have shitty neighboors .
    ok,
    HP pavillion DV6 windows 7 , i7 core
    1/ mousse and keyboard works fine before it shows the login screen.
         STOPS working both even when i connect USB keyboard and mousse on normal and safe mode
         the shortcuts on top of the keyboard still works though (screen light, volume control, wireless on/off ... etc )
    2/ my recovery fail to start
    3/ tried the battery thing stil mousse and keyboard NOT working
    4/ I also managed to run command prompt with windows 7 DVD in french (not compatible) but helped me run
    chkdsk C: /r /f
    and
    chkdsk D: /r /f
    means hard drive is ok, but recovery still fail to start and asks to run recovery from windows CD (I dont have one, and I dont want to loose my windows license)
    how to either fix recovery or keyboard/mousse
    I fixed more than 500 pc in my life, I cant fix mine now

    Hello zgued.  I understand you're having some trouble with your keyboard and mouse.
    If you were to reboot your computer and access the BIOS using the F10 button does the keyboard work there?
    Which dv6 do you own?  Identifying the notebook by the product number is the most helpful.  This document can show you where it is located.
    Have you ever taken the notebook apart?  The symptoms you describe would fit with a damaged or loosened cable inside the notebook.
    I feel that I should first help you troubleshoot the recovery issue.  I say this because performing the recovery will rule out software issues with a 99% certainty.  So, what was the problem you faced during a recovery?  Do you get any errors?
    I'll keep an eye out for your response.  Have a great day!
