Kde from extra or kdemod?

I dont care about modularity...I just want to ask which is better, cause kdemod has some backports,etc....What do you think?

I had a play with KDE4 both mod and stock arch installs. Neither booted any faster than the other. KDE mod had the better default install IMO, all the junk supplied in the stock arch one is a bit overwhelming. Also KDE mod has binary packages of Amarok-svn and K3B svn if your into eithe of those.
Otherwise the real differences were minimal, both installed and ran, neither had any obviously stupid defaults. In anycase I tried out KDE4.2 (beta stuff) and it still was not anywhere near a full desktop solution, its just too pieced together for my liking at the moment. I definately prefer it to gnome now though, and will probably give it another try in a year or so when its all stabilized (plenty of crashes in both kdemod/stock on the 4.1.3 build, and the beta is even worse of course).
If I had to recommend either I would say KDEmod.

  • KDE from Arch v KDEmod

Now that Arch splits KDE packages, what advantages are there to using KDEmod? For me it was always about being modular but now I can do that with Arch itself...

yes well as i said ..... i heard about the "few patches here and there" but never did discover which ones and why they would be important to KDE. for the life of me i cannot find much difference between my KDEmod desktop and my kde[extra] laptop apart from the kickoff logo, but i do not use shaman or arxin and such GUI tools so that might be something that explains it.

I'm honestly not sure-but I can spot a few.  I never could get KDEMod to do some of the default theming things I was seeing with KDE.  KDEMod4 always had very flat colors, and not gradients like I'd often see in screenshots. I figured it was just my monitor...After I went back to Vanilla KDE, nope it was the patched version of Qt or the patches applied to KDE for KDEMod.  Extra-KDE does it fine.

  • KDE 4.3 vs KDEmod 4.3 (What is modularization)

    Hi,
Ok first a newbie question. Have I understood correctly when I say that KDEmod is essentially a "modularized" version of KDE? If so what does "modularization" mean exactly? Does it mean that instead of installing everything KDE has to offer I can chose to keep things small and only add the "modules" I want and need?
Secondly I've heard that KDE 4.3 is going to be modularized. Is this correct? Won't this make KDEmod slightly redundant (except for tweeking for chakra live-cd)? Once KDE 4.3 is released should I remove KDEmod and just install KDE? Or should I just upgrade my current KDEmod?

Allan wrote:I could see this becoming the flame fest it is well on its way to becoming...  especially given this thread is already linked on the Chakra forums.  And there was at least one thread about this previous on their forums.
I have just seen it. Depending on how this thread develops, i will close it.
And about the opinions in our forums: We also seem to have some missing consensus, every of of our devs has a different opinion about certain things, so we need some more clearance on this topic too.
Allan wrote:Also, I know exactly what the libjpeg7 rebuild took to achieve given I took the lead in doing it.  The fact that KDEmod took a couple of days to catch up is perfectly understandable. It was a lot of work and there has been no attempt at synchronisation that I know of, so this was always going to happen unless the KDEmod guys were sitting waiting for the move to happen.
We always know whats going on in the Arch repos Its just that we are "normal people" and not some uber-devs, and sometimes we just have some time issues, like me currently changing my job and moving to another city and so forth. This is something users seem to forget from time to time. The only solution would be paying us, and i doubt that this would be sucessful All in all, whenever something like the libjpeg "situation" happens: Just calm down, drink a tea or something and wait for the update. Its not like that we are not keeping our stuff together.
Oh, and dont forget: Arch ist _the_ fastest distro out there when it comes to updates, sometimes its lightyears ahead of the "competition", so just enjoy the luxury and dont panic when its taking a bit more time sometimes
Allan wrote:Arch is splitting the KDE packages up with the KDE-4.3 release. This has previously only been available from KDEmod, so it is obvious that the KDEmod guys will see some "competition" here.
Well, i dont see much competition here, because we have completely different goals. However, there are some things that shocked me a bit, but more down below.
Allan wrote:So there is obviously some overlap between the groups.  Is there still a "need" for KDEmod. Well, yes. The Chakra guys need to customise their packages for their distro as they are aiming for something quite different than Arch.
Yes, thats the main reason. We just cannot provide the level of integration we want with the Arch packages, in our opinion a "desktop" LiveCD should feel like a desktop and we have very high standards regarding this integration. That starts with unofficial bugfixes for well-known KDE bugs and ends with our own patches for a "proper" default desktop, and of course our unofficial feature patches that we are doing for the fun of it.
Allan wrote:The question that needs asked is whether the KDEmod guys now need to maintain a whole KDE-4.x release or base it on the Arch packages some more.  We know they have much more experience in package splitting than the two Arch devs who maintain KDE.  As funkyou pointed out above, there may have been some unnecessary splitting that occurred and he has indicated elsewhere that the KDEmod guys have solved problems in the Arch packages.
Another question is: Why got the split KDE packages in Arch built completely from scratch when there is already a project that does the same since a long time? Could have been easier by just asking us for some support or ideas. I guess i can port the Arch KDE PKGUILDs to our buildsystem (and the other way around) in less than 5 minutes, thats what i call doubled work.
Oh, and i know that i can be somewhat "in-your-face" from time to time, thats why people either love or hate me. But all in all, no one from our team bites, we are just a bunch of guys who love working on KDE, and we are always happy to help or answer questions.
Also, what really shocked me was the fact that, beside not asking us, maintainers of much smaller repos that were there for just some months were asked to "join efforts and work on one set of packages". I dont know how i should name that, ignorance or ego? (Just being open here, no flame intended).
Allan wrote:So maybe more collaboration would be good here.
My dream: All major KDE repos on Arch work together, to solve problems etc while keeping their uniqueness. We have KDE in extra, we have Markc's daily builds and we have Chakra/KDEmod and so forth. And everyone can learn something from the other projects. Maybe something like an "Arch KDE strike force" could be an idea. Since i am using this distro, all others are just plain boring because Arch has the power and it just misses a bit of organization to be the perfect distro when it comes to the desktop. Maybe we can start that with a shared IRC channel, like #arch-KDE or something.
wonder wrote:i didn't wanted to offend the project, is just that i'm more excited about kde-unstable than the kdemod. maybe because  i'm waited splitted kde from the time was announced on ml until now. this made me think about switching to kde and i didn't wanted to switch before because i don't like to mixed packages with unsupported repository. and libjpeg7 issues was a lot and if you search on bugtracker a lot of false reports was submited.
again. i'm sorry if i offend but this are my reason about the previous post.
No problem. But maybe you should change your mind a little bit, "external project" doesnt mean its completely unsupported. I dont know how people get this idea, especially when you consider for how long we are doing it now.

  • "Replace ipw2100 with ipw2100-fw from 'extra'?"

After a -Syu, I've been asked if I want to replace ipw2100 with ipw2100-fw from extra. Should I? What's the difference from the version that I have? Is there a catch? I haven't been able to find any info on it;  might not that be a good idea in cases like this, either a slightly more elaborate message in pacman, or some announcement in the forum?

Ehm... oh yes, there was a note there... Only place  I didn't see. That news column... it's so well hidden down there on the page...
[** makes mental note to check news next time **]
    Thanks.

  • What's the best way to prevent KDE from using pulseaudio?

What's the best way to prevent KDE from using pulseaudio if it is required to be installed for gnome?

KDE system Settings > Mulitmedia  (in Hardware category) > Audio and Video options > Audio Playback
the default device shown there is the pulseaudio device, move it to the bottom of the list
Check all sub entries under Audio Playback to make sure they all have default at the bottom.
This SHOULD make KDE sound subsystem use the real hardware directly through Alsa instead of pulseaudio.

Thank you very much . Yes, I had kopete from AUR.

  • Accessing a public array from extra class.

I am trying to access a public array that I declared in my main class from a separate class. I am a bit confused about why this is not working.
The method search in the extra class is called in the extra class in part one of the nextKeystream method. How can I get it to use the int array "key". That I declared in the MainSolitaireDriver?
    Thanks

  • Can't boot windoze from extra sata ports in MacPro?

I recently bought a 5th HD for my Mac Pro planning to mount the drive under the optical drive and take advantage of the 2 extra sata ports on the mobo. Because my Vista drive was the only one with the old style power connector ( and I have no adapter ), I thought I'd put it up there and the new drive in the sled. Long story short, the Vista HD mounts when I boot into my Mac OS(s), but it won't boot into Vista..
Is this a known limitation of bootcamp/windoze/MacPro? Will a SnowLeopard OS drive boot from that sata port or is it only going to be useful for data drives? Any other limitations of those 2 extra ports?
Sorry if this has been answered before, I couldn't seem to form a useful query..
    TIA

    Hi flommer,
by default Windows or better said the Apple BootCamp Drivers for Windows can not see or use the odd SATA ports.
Have a look here http://osx86.net/archive/index.php/t-3159.html for possible solutions to that.
    Hope it helps

  • [SOLVED] Installing VLC from Extras doesn't work.

    Hey guys,
During installation I enabled the pacman repository mirror for my country. Which is hosted by Kangaroot.net
Just now I tried to install VLC media player. Oddly enough pacman couldn't find a couple of dependency packages on the Kangaroot mirror.
To fix this I went into /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and enabled all the mirrors from Germany. I figured that would fix it.
Seems that the German mirrors are missing the same packages though. This is pacman's output:
error: failed retrieving file 'libdvbpsi-0.2.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz' from mir.archlinux.fr : Not Found
error: failed retrieving file 'ffmpeg-20111108-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz' from archlinux.polymorf.fr : Not Found
error: failed retrieving file 'libupnp-1.6.13-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz' from archlinux.polymorf.fr : Not Found
error: failed retrieving file 'vlc-1.1.12-3-i686.pkg.tar.xz' from mir.archlinux.fr : Not Found
When you look up "Archlinux" on the videolan.org website it claims VLC ought to be available in the Extras repository.
    What am I missing?
    Last edited by 20k (2011-11-26 21:26:44)

Am I right in understanding that because pacman's database was not properly updated it couldn't find the same packages on other mirrors either?
Yes. Your database was out of date, therefore pacman was looking for things which would no longer exist on any up to date mirror.
EDIT: If your problem is solved, please edit your thread title to reflect this

EDIT: I also tried deleting ~/.eclipse and starting with a clean workspace directory, didn't help.

  • HT201504 How do I change from extra large to large after completion.

I did an I photo book extra large, the full page photos were blurred I  have made some corrections and now wish to repurchase as large but I can't change the order from the original extra large?  How do I order this book under large.  The problem is you determine size before making the book?

Select the book in the side window of iPhoto and type Command + D to duplicate the book.  Select the duplicate version, go to the View All Pages window and click on the Change theme button.  In the next window you can change the size of the book you want.
After doing so be sure to carefully check each page to make sure all photos are present and there are no text overruns causing a warning icon to appear in the text box.
Before ordering the book follow the directions in iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support to create a preview PDF file of the book.  Check the PDF file carefully for any errors.  If all is good order the book.  Save the pdf file to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.

  • Tarantella running v. slow/unable to run KDE from webtop (all users)

My knowledge of linux and tarantella is pretty limited, so bare with me
    here:
We are running Tarantella 3.6 on a Red Hat server, with Win4lin Terminal
Services for Win 98 sessions. This morning, the server had mysteriously
switched off over night, and now it has booted up it is running
incredibly slowly, and users cannot start up KDE desktop sessions. They
can log in to the webtop without any problems but when selecting KDE
desktop the progress bar moves extremely slowly across the dialogue box
then stops. This is for all users.
Even starting konsole in root takes 2 minutes to kick in, and the Object
    Manager takes even longer.
As I know very little about Tarantella I don't know where to start,
except to reboot the system, which I have done several times. It has
never happened before, and we have been running the server for about 9
    months.
    Any ideas?
    many thanks,

    Graeme,
If I have to guess, the reason that it was slow when your ADSL was down has
probably something to do with your routing and/or hostname resolution.

Welcome aboard :-)Thanks for your response Rob. The system is working normally now. For
some reason Tarantella started working normally again when we regained
internet access (Our ADSL line was down for a couple of days last week).
As soon as the broadband came up again, everything went back to normal.
I'd be interested to know if anyone could explain why this happened.
    We are running Tarantella 3.6
AFAIK, there's no 3.6 version of Tarantella; please check with
"tarantella version" to know more about your installed version. You may
have to put /opt/tarantella/bin (or wherever you installed TTA in) in
your PATH before running the above command.Sorry, I meant 3.4!

You can use "top", "sar" or "vmstat" to find out why the system is
    crawling.
Even starting konsole in root takes 2 minutes to kick in, and the
    Object
    Manager takes even longer.
So this should not be a problem with TTA; however, if "top" report a
high CPU utilization on behalf of some "tarantella" commands, please
have your users logged out and issue the "tarantella stop --kill"
command. When tarantella stops, verify again the load on the system with
"top"; try also by getting into KDE on the console.I'll take note of these commands for future use
If things now happen in a timely manner, try by restarting Tarantella
    (tarantella start).
