KDE/GNOME menus

What is the usual/preferred method of getting icons in to GNOME and KDE menus? Is there a standard location? Are there any helper programs or will stuffing a .desktop file somewhere just work?

iphitus wrote:But this isnt reccomended when distributing .desktop files, as other users may well want to see those options in their menu.
Sure, I was simply under the impression we were speaking about a user's individual desktop environment and their desire to make user specific changes, not global or packaging alterations. When I make Slackpacks I never presume to speak for the user, and so after providing the desktop file (if needed) I let them decide whether or not to narrow its menu usage.

  • KDE applications in GNOME menus and vice versa

    Hi,
I installed KDE and GNOME on my laptop. This is because I like them both, and they both have applications that I like.
The problem is that all KDE applications show up in the GNOME menus, and all GNOME applications show up in the KDE menus.
There is a hack explained at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=26170 that "fixes" this, but it's kind of unusable because:
    1) While it's rather easy to do this for KDE, when I install new KDE applications I have to do this again. It's easy because it's in /opt/kde
    2) GNOME *.desktop is located in /usr/share/applications, and not only GNOME stores its .desktop files there. Makes it hard to ShowOnlyIn=GNOME there.
Ideally I'd have a directory called "KDE" in the GNOME menu, and vice versa. Is there any way to achieve this easily? Perhaps even the Arch Linux devs could make something like this the default? Right now menus do get very cluttered if you have more than one DE installed.

Here's the thingie for gnome "directory" in KMenu. I don't know about the other way around.

  • Edited gnome menus with Alacarte - gnome wont start anymore!

    Hi!
First off; I've had this problem about a year ago, and the only thing that repaired it was to reinstall Arch... I made a similar thread at the time, but didn't get any help.
I use Alacarte to edit my gnome menus, but when I delete the items that I dont use, the next time I try to log into the computer, gnome wont start. It stops loading the desktop while the splash-screen shows, and I can see the mouse-cursor and conky in the background, but no menus or panels, and the splash-screen wont go away either.
Luckily, this time I had both openbox and gnome installed, so I was able to use openbox to write this thread.
Anyone got any tips on how to fix this without reinstalling my os?
    Cheers

Okay so I found a way to work around this problem. If I create a new user it works again, BUT I want my old user back. If I delete my main user, and recreate it with the same username etc, will it use my old home directory with all my settings etc?

  • KDE / gnome hang while starting

    Hi,
well, KDE and Gnome hang while starting them, when I change back to console, I can read the following:
xset: bad font path element (#63), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
        Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
I reinstalled xorg, kde, gnome, but again it simply hangs, xorg starts up normally, but when changing to kde or gnome it hangs
    xfce4, wmi, dr17 run well.
I didn change any config filel...
So any idea what could be wrong ?
    thanks

Go to /opt/kde/share/applications/kde and insert OnlyShowIn=KDE into the desired files.

  • How to install kde/gnome desktop in arch linux?

I tried with installing pacman -S xorg-server and xorg-apps then
i have given installation for kde and gnome using  pacman -Sy kde kdm xorg-xinit dbus gnome gnome-extra.
But it is asking me to replace some softwares..
    At the end after downloading
while commit transaction it's showing some errors like
    /lib exists in filesystem
    /usr/bin/tzselect exists in filesystem
    /bin/kill
    /etc/pam.d/chfn exist in filesystem
    /usr/share/man/man1/...
So i tried with Syuf still getting error.
From wiki i have seen installing glibc
    using pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
    pacman -Syu --ignore glibc
    pacman -Su
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -Sd gcc gcc-libs
After some sort of commands i lost my script commands like poweroff, reboot....it's showing /sbin/init not exist...
Then when my computer starts it is not booting...
What all i want to do is getting an UI with dbus and xorg..
    Today i have started archlinux...
    Please help

    Is it a stable one?..
We are planning to switch everything from Ubuntu to ArchlInux
One more question..Is it mandatory to install xorg and dbus before installing any kde or gnome UI?
I have this doubt because when i install xorg-server and xorg-apps.(first pacman installation)..it's showing for pacman update i gave no..then it is saying like replacing some of the packages with another one?
This is a problem with my installation..or will it be fixed if i moved to latest one?
    Thanks in Advance

  • Kde / gnome widgets?

    Hello guys,
I recently started using arch linux and tested out both, gnome and kde. So, I found out, I'd really prefer using gnome since it's fabulous, however I really miss these widgets things, now the deskop is just a picture and "useless".
So is there anything for gnome like the plasmoids for kde?

  • Customizing the gnome menus

I am building a demo environment. I want to use the gnome ui and create menu items like jdeveloper, sqldeveloper, sqlplus etc to make it easier for users to get started. So far I have:
    1. create desktop items in ~/.local/share/applications
    2. created a new menu ~/.config/menus/demo.menu
    3. created a supporting directory entry ~/.local/share/desktop-directories/demo.directory
    4. modified ~/.config/menus/applications.menu, which references /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu and added
    <Menu>
    <Name>Demo</Name>
    <MergeFile>demo.menu</MergeFile>
    </Menu>
But when I restart gnome the new menu does not show up under Applications.
I've verified the category (DSSTools. one I made up) in the xxx.desktop files matches the categories in the demo.menu file.
If I add a category like "Internet" to the desktop items they show up on that menu (and work), so I know it is not the jdeveloper.desktop (etc.) file.
    I've run out of ideas.

Below is what changes when adding a menu to "My Menu" named submenu, containing an item called submenu item:

  • Help with kde/gnome

hello everyone .. I have just install arch linux ( installed all packages on cd )
and now im stuck with runlevel4 .. I tried to startx but that brings me into a version ugly graphical desktop . I guess my real question is . How do I get KDE or Gnome running ?

    sysboy wrote:
hey scarecrow where and how can I get 3.4.2 on my system
    pacman im guess ???
Simply edit /etc/pacman.conf and uncomment the lines related to "testing".
After that, "telinit 3" (as root), login as root, and "pacman -Syu" (or maybe "pacman -Sy kde", as the previous command will also fetch you the new xorg version from testing, which seems being OK, but I'm not 100% sure....)
This should effortlessly upgrade you to 3.4.2 (after some time, of course!).
To avoid nasties, get sure that NO external kde apps are installed (else uninstall them BEFORE the upgrade and recompile them after the upgrade...), and for safety rename your old .kde user (hidden) directory to something else (in case that some useful data were stored there- else simply delete it before logging to KDE again).
The biggest worry with KDE 3.4.2 is that it also brings gcc 4.0.1 with it, which still has some quirks (maybe this is the sole reason it's still at "testing"), but IMO we all should get accustomed to it- sooner rather than later...

  • KDE/Gnome interference

Although the problem is there already a long time, only recently it really has started to bug me.
I run a KDE4 desktop environment, but I still heavily depend on GTK and Gnome applications.
I've also grown quite fond of the possibilities of the composite systems.
However there seem to be quite some glitches.
    Examples:
VLC toggles Fullscreen: Flashes of the Gnome wallpaper will appear.
After starting a gnome program, the kmix interface is replaced by the gnome volume images (when using the keys on my keyboard)
When plug in of a new USB-disk both the Gnome system and the KDE pop-ups will appear.
    All these things are accumulating
And I wonder whether there is a way to keep both systems separated?

I know 1 doesn't work, but it sounds like a nice feature which would be rather easy to write in KDE 4. Here's a feature request for it, as I think it makes sense.
    http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=170676
2: This might work in KDE, at least konversation and kopete work with the adressbook in KDE 3. Not sure how far KDE 4 is in this regard, this is often the kind of things still not done (but easy to do, so it'll probably come soon).

  • KDM refuses to log me in - but KDE/GNOME works fine with startx

I just updated to the newest kernel and another ~150 packages and I have a little bug!
Basically KDM starts fine, (i use the innitab method) - I log in and then black screen and straight back to KDM.
Using startx and the appropriate entry in xinitrc I can boot gnome or kde fine.
Anyone have any Idea? I'm lost.

this kdm.log -> I moved the old log out of the way so this is fresh. I did an init 5, logged in with kdm, waited for it to black screen then restart and then copied the log over.
Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

  • Refresh gnome menus

Usually after uninstalling an application, it's icon still remains in my gnome Application's menu.......
Is there anyway to auto-refresh this menu, for making it realize that some programs have been removed?
    Thanks!

Try 'update-menus'? Also, killing the panel 'killall gnome-panel' (it should automatically come back) may fix it. You could probably use a script to automatically do that after every run of pacman, too.

  • Temperature threshold event (without kde/gnome)?

    Hi all,
with all those approaches around (powersave, pm-utils, hibernate-script, laptop-mode, cpufreqd, cpufrequtils and so on), I am now utterly confused. However, I suspect I have a somewhat sound setup. Because I had problems in the past with the CPU getting too hot, I have set it to its lowest frequency, powersave governor, almost everywhere I could. Now I'm getting a bit more courageous (and tired of the CPU being used only with some 40% of its power), and I am about to reboot with a few settings changed to ondemand. Now to make sure nothing bad happens, I would like to start passive cooling when a certain temperature threshold is reached, i.e. I want to revert to governor powersave based on that event. But how would I go about generating such an event? Probably something with hald?
    TIA,
    Andreas

    Solved! But how
udisks/udisks2 requires CONFIG_SWAP to be enabled in the kernel!
I can't imagine why this kernel option is required by udisks now. Personally I can't see any obvious reason, there is no sense.
I will try to contact the developers. Because I can't imagine why SWAP is required.
