KDE in Solaris 10

HI,
I've installed KDE in Solaris 10 3/05 but don't know how to make it my default Desktop Environment. I don't see it anywhere. The KDE I installed is the one from the Companion DVD, just in case you need this information.
Can you please tell me how to boot into KDE?
Thank you very much.

installing KDE means you have the code for the specific UNIX version, so for example there are codes for GNU Linux and for several distributions not for all and not in all versions of KDE...
I know there are codes for KDE 3.2 for solaris 10 but then you would need to compile it under solaris gcc and then you would be able to install it...
KDE3.4 code for solaris 10 is still on development...

  • Installation drivers for IBMT23

    Sorry,
I know that it may be a dump question, but I'm totally fresh user of SunOS ,or any UNIX based OS.
I've installed it on my computer and it works, but I haven't got concept in which way I should install drivers for my laptop(especially graphic driver, sound drivers and so on).
I'm using a few mailing lists and I know how "old" users react:
    "You should read manulal........"
Yes I know it ,but I haven't got time for it,and moreover I'd like to work on Solaris as soon as possible and in that way develop my skills in using it.
    Thanks Lukasz
p.s Do anybody know if there is a chance to instal KDE on Solaris OS??

    Hi Lukasz,
For a good starting point for drivers on Solaris, read the documents at http://solaris-x86.org/ or http://www.bolthole.com/
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/ is good for looking at previous builds from people on diff hardware. Also http://www.opensolaris.org/ is very good.

  • Compiling kde-3.4.x on Solaris 10

Who can tell me what must be done to build KDE-3.4.x and Qt on Solaris10, with gcc.(or with SunStudio10), but I'm more interested how this can be done with gcc.
I tried compiling qt with (gcc):
    "./configure -no-stl -no-g++-exceptions -platform solaris-g++ -thread -shared -system-zlib -system-libpng -system-libjpeg -qt-libmng -plugin-imgfmt-mng"
CXXFLAGS="-fpermissive". This is because on developer.kde.org, they say something about functions in the Solaris X headers that lack return types.
The error occurs after building uic. It says something about a symbol that it is being exported but it cannot be found.(PtrCollection. or something like that)
Anyway, I've tried and I've tried, and no results yet.
If someone already did it, I would like very much to know how.

  • Adding KDE desktop to console based Solaris 11

Im new to solaris, previously i hav used Linux preloaded with KDE or Gnome. I m using solaris 11 x86 on my Win7 ultimate with VMware Workstation. I used text installer to install on virtual disk and now this black screen makes me feel sick and tired.
I want to install kde desktop GUI on this but i couldnt find packages for kde
somebody help me with package and installing commands(new to CLI)

If you want to install a desktop by default, I'd suggest downloading the live CD and installing from it as it'll give you exactly the solaris-desktop package set, and do so more quickly than the two-step process you've gone through in this case.
Running your own repository can be useful if you're going to deploy a lot of Solaris instances.

  • Jds3 in solaris 10 x86 broken

Hi, i am a novice to unix and have been trying to learn solaris for some time now. I finally have a system that will allow me to install the os with minimum headaches. The problem i have been experiencing is that when i install kde OR SUN GNOME, something related to it causes jds to brake. I get a black background when i log in to jds and can only use some applications. if i try to change the background through the jds tool it crashes. can someone advise me what may be affecting gnome and how to fix it please. (JDS WORKS FINE IF KDE AND ITS DEPENDANCIES NOT INSTALLED)
    my system specs:
    AMD 3000+ PROC
    ASUS A7N8XE-DELUXE MB
    1.5 GIG RAM
    80 GIG HD
    256 MB ATI VID CARD
    PINNACLE CAPTURE CARD
2 PROMISE PCI CONTROLLER CARDS(4 80 GIG HD ATTACHED)

I apologize, someone usually responds on this forum
within a day or two, and I'm currently working on
newer opensolaris releases and one of the older linux
based JDS releases, so your combination of JDS3
Solaris with KDE wasn't easily to replicate without
wiping a system that I'm using for something else.
In the future I would suggest that you post such
questions to one of the opensolaris forums:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=39
    start=0
Here is a thread on installing KDE from blastwave:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=
    26374B
If you think this combination of JDS3 and KDE would
be useful to others, I'd appreciate if you could post
your solution. Even "newbies" can contribute.nitz thank you for responding, it has been frustrating trying to get this beast up and running. First i had resolved the problem by cleanining up my /etc/profile file as there were duplicate path statements and statements in incorrect order, caused by me following stuff i got over the internet and not realizing that solaris puts some of those statements automatically into env path. This was working fine until i had to reinstall thus mu handle REINSTALLED :-)
    because i forgot to create a hard link between /usr and /opt/csw which my soft link got trashed. now after reinstalling the OS and programs from blastwave the black background is back in JDS. any help or suggestions will be appreciated. on another note i have been able to fix the sig 11 error associated with kde as follows;
*make sure /opt/csw/kde-gcc/bin and /opt/csw/bin is at the end of the path list, because the compilier was interfering with the css compilier.
also do not install qt from blastwave as kde also has its own qt files built in. when i installed qt for use with another program i get the sig 11 error and kde will not login or work properly, but when i just pkgrm /opt/CSWqt , everything worked normal again.
    Thanks again for responding.

  • Choose your x86 poison: SLES 10, RHEL 5, or Solaris 10?

I've been mulling around the pros and cons of each OS and wondering if anyone has any figures, tests or feedback.
I am lumping Oracle's EL in with Red Hat here by the way.
Linux has the advantage in that it SEEMS to be Oracle's primary development platform at the moment, and so patches and version releases are most likely to be released first for Linux.
Solaris use to be Oracle's primary development platform, and Oracle has historically been very stable on the Solaris kernel. Patches were always build first for Solaris, and then ported to other platforms. Also, the Solaris kernel is very stable - more so than Red Hat EL in my experience - as is AIX.
Last year Larry Ellison said that Solaris 10 would be the primary platform for 64-bit development - though that may well have changed now.
    I welcome others thoughts.

Choosing between SLES 10, RH 5 and Solaris 10 x86 will depend on what Oracle products you want to support. If you need to support Oracle Applications (e-Business Suite), none of the three are supported. Oracle Applications through the latest R12 are only supported on Oracle Linux 4, RH 3/4 and SLES 9. Check the certify tab on Metalink to see what Oracle products are supported on SLES 10, RH 5 and Solaris 10 x86 (and x86-64).
Some 64-bit products are released on linux 64-bit before any other platform (10gR3 Grid Control full install for example).
Solaris 64-bit Sparc is still a well supported platform, but you need special sysadmin skills or very good experience support the Sparc platform to do this at home, and cannot be done on commodity hardware.
For my own personal training with Oracle products, I prefer the Suse products because I like the Suse KDE setup and YaST is a nice and intuitive setup utility. On Red Hat and Oracle Linux, you pretty much need to know how to do everything on the command line, or implement something like webmin for system administration. If you try to install on Red Hat or Oracle Linux, and run into problems, you will mostly find articles on Metalink that indicate the most import thing is to know what you are doing. If you don't already know what you are doing, getting there can be pretty hard. On Suse, there are many good installation guides for most Oracle products on www.suse.com/oracle in the documentation link. The orarun package does a good job of setting up the OS with the appropriate kernel parameters for running Oracle software, so you can be up and running pretty quickly.
Finally, you choice should be influenced by what OS you support in your business. If you primarily support one OS in your profession, then you should gain familiarity on that platform. If you need to know how Oracle works on multiple OSs, then you should have multiple machines available, or one large one with several virtual machines.

lsusb shows the stick, fdisk shows no device, if I read it correctly. Since the trouble is endemic to just one box, the trouble must be some cryptic extra bit(s) of software, accumulated over unknown period. It's the only idea that occurred to me so far, that is. What can I do to locate the troublemaker?

Thanks, that's it! With Linux, one gets unused to rebooting just in case.

  • Solaris 10 (5.11) Questions

I have read many posts that do not seem to relate to my system so I am trying to get answers here. I have several questions regarding root's environment settings, use of LD_LIBRARY_PATH, logging of general errors, and menu configurations. To me there does not seem to be a clear definition of solaris setup. Some of the information on the Sun site that appears to be related to my issue I cannot access. If this is "open" software I think there should be more information available.
    1) I have changed root's shell to bash (I know some people think this is bad but I want the system to be usable) and given root a home (/root) in passwd file. I am using root in a terminal using "su".
    a) I have added .bash_profile and .profile files in / and /root.
    b) I have set values in /etc/profile and /usr/dt/config/dtspcdenv to no avail.
    c) HELP! What files control root's environment? When I modify one of these files, what do I need to do to get the changes implemented when I use "su"?
    2) LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    a) I was trying VirtualBox (from a terminal as "su") and received errors about not finding libGL.so, so I wanted to change LD_LIBRARY_PATH to see what the affect would be.
    b) My system had no LD_LIBRARY_PATH definition to start with (set and export did not show any settings)
    c) Because of (2) I just created a LD_LIBRARY_PATH that pointed to the location of lbGL.so (in my primary user profile). When I logged in the next time, I got an error about nautlis not being able to start and suggested running bonobo-slay (I think this is the correct command) to correct the problem. It also mentioned that it could be a LD_LIBRARY_PATH setting. I think it mentioned "bonobo activation start files" but that message was not distinct enough for me to determine what path might be missing from LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
    d) Searching on the net (using an MS Windows box) I found references to a couple of other paths that should be in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, so I added those and the system would let me login.
    e) HELP! Can somebody define the use and setting of LD_LIBRARY_PATH? Is there any documentation for the operation of Solaris when LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not defined versus when it is defined?
    3) Since I changed LD_LIBRAY_PATH, I cannot run the menu selection Preferences.Main Menu. I get a busy cursor and then nothing.
    a) Obviously I could remove my definitions for LD_LIBRARY_PATH and it would probably work, but that does not help me understand what is happening.
    b) I thought that if I ran the command from a terminal, I might see an error message that helped me fix the problem.
    c) HELP! How do I know what command is run when I make that menu selection?
    d) HELP! Are errors, that keep an application from running, logged any where? I have searched through /var/log files and found nothing.
    4) Menu configurations
    a) I believe I am running gnome and I have a java menu button on my task bar.
    b) HELP! What determines the contents of this menu when I select it.
    c) The gnome menu definitions seem to be a LOT more obscure than those for KDE.
    d) HELP! Can anybody point me towards a thorough documentation of the gnome menu configuration?
    Thanks,

Wow. A gazillion questions in one.
As the other responder indicated, use `su -` to set the environment of root (the "-" is the key).
If you changed root's home directory to /root, then you don't need to add stuff to /. You just need to add it to /root. I've done the same sort of stuff, but I switched to ksh rather than bash.
You can use `crle` to see what the default libraries are that the loader will reference when there is no LD_LIBRARY_PATH. A `man crle` will actaully tell you quite a bit about the loader's actions.
In Solaris, many of the log files are in /var/adm. But, application specific stuff may not show up in the system logs.
You can find lots of documentation at http://docs.sun.com -- view it by browsing or searching. You should spend some time getting to know it so that you can find your way around in it. Also check man pages. You may not get all the man pages initially when you use `man ...` However, if you try `find / -type d -name man`, you will find the location of lots of other man directories. Then you can get specifics for them by doing `man -M /usr/sfw/share/man wget` (just as an example). The -M gets you into other man page directories.

  • Solaris 8 x86: Problems with VNC

I have installed Solaris 8 x86 on my "slave PC" and now I want to access it remotely from my "master PC". The networking runs well so far. Ping, telnet, and internet access are all possible.
Now I have installed the tightVNC 1.2.9 package on the Solaris 8 system. When I start the vncserver, the following error message appears:
"Couldn't start Xvnc; trying default font path.
Please set correct fontPath in the vncserver script."
When I try to connect with the vncviewer from my master PC, the screen is started but remains all grey.
In the vncserver script, the originally set fontPath did not work. I replaced it by some paths which are obviously recognized but with the same result.
Any help is appreciated very much.
    Thank you in advance!
    Thomas

I commented all the set fontPath commands in the vncserver script, and now it works properly as desired. Indeed, it seems like no adjustments for font paths are needed.
The blocking point was, that in the script ~/.vnc/xstartup, the command line "startkde" has to be inserted instead of "kde" which is used in Linux systems for that case.
    Thank you!
    Thomas

  • No sound output on Solaris 8 and an Ultra 5

I have recently installed Solaris 8 on a Sun Ultra 5 after a few minor problems, everything seems to be working great.
However, I am unable to use any of the system sound notifications under KDE or Gnome. KDE starts the arts sound server just fine without any errors. Audio CD works great but no other audio.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

Bummer. So you still can't boot OS 9, and get no sound device listed in the OS X Sound Preference Pane? Just checking, did you also press the CUDA reset button after reseating the card? (It's on the side of the motherboard between the PCI card slots and the side, at the rear of the DT case.)
For me, the sound started working again magically after I moved. So, my computer was unplugged for a couple of days and possibly bouncing around in the car a little. Not sure if a loose connection was restored during the move, or being unplugged from the wall power for a few days helped the computer recognize the card again.
Of course there's still the possibility your card is no longer working.
