KDE networkmanager and sharing mobile internet connection to wlan

I'm not so expert in networking only a user.
I use KDE 4.6.1. I have a netbook with Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter driver ath5k. I have installed networkmanagement 20110226-1 and networkmanager 0.8.2-3.
I connect to the internet with a mobile broadband connection CDMA/EDVO that is well recognized and connect well.
I used to share the connection with other notebook.
But I can't create an ad-hoc shared connection.
After installing dnsmasq and follow the instruction finded here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sh … _interface
Configure dnsmasq. Make the following changes to /etc/dnsmasq.conf (uncomment if necessary):
domain-needed
bogus-priv
interface=wlan0
dhcp-range=10.42.43.1,10.42.43.100,12h
Start dnsmasq as root:
/etc/rc.d/dnsmasq start
Finally, set firewall to forward connections to and from the Internet for clients connecting to your wlan. This is done by issuing (you guessed it right, as root again):
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
Now it reply this error from the log

The NetworkManager enter in a loop of trying to connect.
Can anyone help me?

According to that blogpost (mentioned in above post - http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2011/0 … ging.html), the bug has been solved and:
Plasma NM does not follow KDE SC release schedule. I tested this code yesterday with KDE 4.4.4 and it worked. It is just a matter of distributions updating their packages with this code.

This bug was fixed in the package network-manager - 0.8.4~git.20110228t143901.5cdded6-0ubuntu1
Archlinux currently uses networkmanager 0.8.3-0.20110113, any chances of anyone including these updates anytime soon?

Airport Extreme joining a network and sharing wired internet connections

Hi everyone,
My new ISP installed their modem/wifi router (Sagemcom) in my home two months ago. Since I share HDDs over the wifi network, I installed my airport extreme near the modem/wifi router and used it to "extend the network", and it worked fine until recently. It stopped working suddently with the yellow light flashing. When I tried to reconfigure it, I always got errors, needing to reset it even to be able to see it again in Airport utility. Honestly, I have absolutely no idea why it stopped working. I tried connecting the Airport Extreme with an ethernet wire to the modem with the same result. So, I decided to move the airport extreme in my living room and use it to share the internet connection with my PS3, slingbox and Apple TV, telling myself that a partly wired connection would improve the signal (since I also had an Airport Express in the living room extending the network before everything stopped working). Now, everything works; the green light is on, HDDs are available on the wifi network, I can only connect to the Sagemcom routeur but, meh, what do you want, BUT, my slingbox, Apple TV and PS3 can't connect to the airport extreme through a wired connection.
Two questions:
1- Is it possible to share a wired internet connection with my Slingbox, PS3 and Apple TV from an Airport Extreme that has joined the network? If yes, what do I need to do to make it work?
2- Any idea why my first setup stopped working?
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, the Ethernet ports are not enabled when the AirPort Extreme is configured to "join" a wireless network.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express does have the ability to "join" a wireless network and deliver an Ethernet signal at the port(s).
2- Any idea why my first setup stopped working?
None that you probably have not already thought about. The most commons cause is a sudden power outage, or even quick power "blip" can sometimes result in the Extreme to losing some of its configuration settings. Otherwise, gremlins are hard to catch.

I'm having problems with my mobile internet connection

I'm having problems with my mobile internet connection. Wifi works fine. It seems like my connection get lost every tuesday and friday between 11 and 12 am local time (guess it would be between 2 and 3 am Los angeles time for example). The connection won't comeback by itself. I have to turn the phone, iPhone 4s iOS 5.0.1, off and back on again. The connection immediatly works fine after the restart and stays fine for days. I really don't know what to do. My provider doesn't seem to know either. Tried a lot of things, new settings, resets, I even got a new iPhone. Still the same problem however. Richt now I changes the time setting to see it the problem occurs at another time. Btw: the phone doesn't say "no service" and I can send sms messages and make phonecalls. The 3G symbol or the circular symbol is shown next to the name of the provider.
Does somebody has an idea what this might be? Thanks a lot.

Update. My carrier says the antenna of my iPhone 4s is not so good as the one in the iPhone 3G. They can't solve the problem. Their signal is too weak for the 4s at places I spend most of my time. Not the answer I expected, but I'm free to choose an other carrier. Hope this will help.

10.7.4 causing hangs and loss of internet connection

Since the update I have had applications hanging and crashing. Mostly Mail, iTunes, and Safari. What is more annoying however is when the computer is inactive for an hour or so, I lose internet connectivity and have to shut down and reboot in order to get it back. I am on a wired connection and sharing another wired connection through the second ethernet port. Has anyone had these issues? It seems like 10.7.4 really messed with my machine...

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.

Have you set up any security on the Mac Connection Sharing?
Sorry but I don't use that so I'm not familiar with the settings.
But if you haven't setup and security the iPhone might not mind but I know most Windows computers do not like to connect to Open WiFi. and make sure it is WPA or WPA2.
Then again it may be a setting in the connection sharing like some type of MAC filtering or it may simply be that Mac OS X connection sharing only allows one connection at a time. Try disconnecting your phone and then connect the PC.
As to Linc's response about Windows.
Windows basically does care about connecting to open, unsecured, WiFi. But it will normally pop up a windows asking "Are myou sure you want to connect to this open network". And a simple click on yes will get you connected and an IP address.
So this is clearly a Mac OS X problem.

Sharing Airport Internet connection Over Ethernet

I've read various things about this on the forums here, but none of them seem to make a considerable amount of sense seeing as the person just magically works out the problem. So I'll attempt to describe my problem.
I'm trying to share my Intel iMac's Airport connection to another mac running 10.4.6 over ethernet. I'm using crossover cable, and so far I've got the two computers to recognise each other in Network tab of the Finder, so I can mount the other's HD on my desktop if i wanted. BUT, I am having no luck with sharing my internet connection, I have the 'Share my Airport connection over Ethernet' settings ticked in System Preferences on the iMac with airport, but the "light" on the network overview page is orange on both computers, and the one connected with ethernet does not connect to the internet.
Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

You are sharing one connection from the main unit to a secondary unit. The secondary unit only has access through the main unit, so the system doesn't see a personal web connection, just a web connection. In order to share that connection, it must be seen as a "personal" or directly connected form of network. This is so that somebody can't just steal your connection and then filter it to a billion computers and hack you and really mess up your system. If you want to share that connection, I suggest you invest in a wireless router. Then you can share all peripherals from the main unit and other units in any configuration you wish, and then use your secondary(wireless) unit to share directly to the third unit(crossover cable) without having to set a bunch of manual controls and troubleshoot. Printers, some scanners, and sometimes even dvd burners can be shared across a router. And because the system reads two connections(comp-to-comp and comp-to-web) through the router, you can actually fully network all peripherals to work across each unit, so long as they all run the same versions of OS and software. Just remember, you get what you pay for with routers. $100-$200 should get you something decent and a USB speed-booster card wouldn't hurt if you can get it as part of the whole router package. I've used the same type of configuration and it has saved me days, even weeks of trying to move data onto cds and dvds to move between computers for using with different programs and tasks.

edit the hosts file on your computer and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com. Disable your antivirus and firewall.

Yes the WiFi card can wear out but not what you would really call wearing out like a pair of pants do. It can start to fail causing the connection between your computer and your Wifi router to slow down, IE transmit and receive less data in a given time period. And then it will fail completely.
But as to your internet connection being affected by a failing WiFi card no that can't happen.
If you turn the WiFi off and connect the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable does your internet browsing and downloading speed increase? If it does then there may be something wrong with the WiFi card in your computer or the WiFi section of your router. Hard to say which.
If after connecting the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable and your speeds do not increase then it is a problem with the router or on your ISPs end.

Unexpected shutdowns and loss of internet connectivity on brand new 420t

Hi,
I was experiencing unexpected shutdowns (would see safe mode choices when turned PC back on) and also intermittent internet connectivity issues.
To Fix:
In device manager, I turned off the option in the Realtek Network Controller Power management tab to allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
It's been working like a charm so far (2 days). I'm not so sure HP should be building PCs with this option set. There are no updates that I haven't installed either. PC still sleeps (can see nic lights go off) and wakes up just fine.
Other that that we really like this PC...Beats Audio wasn't impressive with only the internal speakers, then I tried a good set of external tweeters and a subwoofer and then it was realized.

And are you suggesting that the kernel panics and the loss of Internet connection are related? They often happen independently of one another.

Sharing an internet connection with Airport express and Time Capsule

Hi, I have been happily using a cable modem and a Time Capsule for my internet connection and wireless network. We recently added solar panels to our roof and the system needs to be connected to the internet so it can be monitored remotely. Calling Comcast is an exercise in frustration, and the solar people don't seem to know exactly how to do it, so I'm trying this.
We bought an Airport Express, thinking if it is connected with an ethernet cable to the solar system, it could somehow share the internet connection with the Time Capsule, or they could talk to each other. When I plug in the Airport Express, the only set-up option seems to be to set up a new network, which I don't think I want to do. Can anyone tell me how to set this up? Thank you!

Hi, Under Water.
You should configure the Express to "Join a wireless network" or to "Extend a wireless network". (Either one will work.)
Connect your computer to your Express via Ethernet and open AirPort Utility. Press "Manual Setup" and authenticate if necessary.
Go to the "Base Station" tab. Give the Express a name and password.
Go to the "Wireless" tab. Set the Wireless mode to "Join a wireless network" or "Extend a wireless network." Enter the name of the wireless network created by your Time Capsule (or select it from the list). Check the box that says "Allow Ethernet clients" (if you're joining) or "Allow Wireless Clients" (if you're extending).
Provide the appropriate security mode and password for the Time Capsule's network.
Press "Update" and allow your Express to restart.
Then you can plug the solar system into the Express's Ethernet port.

Sharing an internet connection MacBook White and PS3?

Hi guys and gals
I'm running a MacBook White and a Nokia Datacard trying to share the internet connection with my new PS3.
I maneged to set up the macbook as a hotspot and found it via the PS3. It fails to assign an ip to the console and then fails to acces the internet obviously.
I tried entering an ip adress manually using the 169.xxx.xxx range but the console still won't connect to the internet giving a dns error.
As I see it I need to edit som settings for the network to automatically assign new ips to clients loging on to share the Macs internet connection but where do I do this?

Is your cable modem also a router, or do you have a router? I ask because it sound like you do since multiple computers are already connected to it.
In that case you only need to run an Ethernet cable from your Mac tot he router. If your short on ports, you can pick up an inexpensive Ethernet switch to allow the connections

File Sharing vs Internet connection

Hi, I'm quite new to Macs, so please forgive me for spelling out overly basic information!
I'm on a home network which has no access to the internet. Mine is an iMac, while the other 3 computers are Windows based. They are all connected via a wireless router, mine using the built-in AirPort. Everything works great and I can share files via the Sharing area of System Preferences and can quite successfully access all other computers. I can see in the Sharing section that other computers can connect to me via smb://192.168.0.11. Perfect!
Next, I have a 3G USB modem which allows me on to the internet, hey I got to this forum! So this clearly also works well.
However, this is where the problem comes in.
If I have both the AirPort turned on, and the 3G key connected to the internet, I can ONLY have either networking OR internet, not both.
In Network System Preferences, if HUAWEI modem is top of the services pile, the internet works great, however no networking (access is smb://10.239.14.150). If AirPort is top of the services pile, networking works great, but Safari gives up the ghost on attempting to connect to the internet.
Is there anyway, or what do I have to do, in order to have both working at the same time??

You won't get a USB modem working at the same time as Airport: this is one of the reasons USB modems are a Bad Idea. Is this a mobile dongle connecting to the mobile phone network or an ADSL modem? If the former you are stuck.
If you have an ADSL connection you would need to buy an ADSL modem with an ethernet output. Connect the Airport to this and it will all work together.
