KDE Plasma 5 crashing at seemingly random times
I've been having this problem for a while now and so far I've been unsuccessful in trying to troubleshoot it myself. My computer will be working along fine, and then all of a sudden will freeze. No mouse pointer movement, no keyboard input, trying to switch to a different X session fails (ctrl+alt+F2, etc.), even the numlock key will stop functioning. This forces me to manually reset the computer each time.
Checking the logs (journalctl --since today) shows this alarm at the time of every crash:
Mar 04 11:32:00 mycomp.domain.local kdeinit5[848]: Created alarm 16777226
Obviously the date/time and PID are different, but it's always kdeinit5 and alarm 16777226.
Google has turned up nothing useful for me that I can see and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when the crashes occur; sometimes I'm running VMs through VirtualBox and doing a million things at once and other times I'm not doing much except browsing the web and reading the news.
I'm speculating that it might be an issue with some of the different KDE packages conflicting somehow, but I have no idea which ones it might be or if that's even remotely the case.
If it helps, here is a complete list of packages that I currently have installed (pacman -Q):

The issue still persists. I have completely wiped and re-installed everything twice now, the second time including the /home partition the second time.
Any help, suggestions or advice would be *really* helpful.
Here's some more info about my system if that helps:

Firefox crashing at seemingly random times?
I am running Windows Safe Mode and running Firefox with add-ons disabled, but it is still crashing. When add-ons are enabled, it crashes any time I try to view the add-ons tab, but if add-ons are disabled, it crashes at more random times.
Crash signature: nsXPCWrappedJSClass::CallMethod(nsXPCWrappedJS*, unsigned short, XPTMethodDescriptor const*, nsXPTCMiniVariant*)
I am also having the repeating crash problem with Google Chrome, but I don't know if the two problems are related.Ill post some of the most recent reports that have happened, if you need more there are plenty logged on there:

Mail tool seems to freeze my system at seemingly random times
Mail tool seems to freeze my system at seemingly random times for a couple of minutes once or twice an hour. What's going on?
I've run permissions repair, & the disk repair run showed no problems. The disk is split into Mac & BootCamp partitions and there's about 80GB free on the Mac partition. I'm running 2 x 8GB DIMMs that have been carefully matched and extensively memtested and passed. This is an early 2011, 15 inch MBP with the 1.5 GB ATI GPU option.
The Console displays about 40 lines like this. Notice the 2 minute time delta between the 1st line in this subset from Console / All Messages:

Thanx,
- GeoffMail tool seems to freeze my system at seemingly random times for a couple of minutes once or twice an hour.

Kde plasma crash after upgrade
Upgraded x86-64 ext4 system with:
e2fsprogs hdparm libidn openjdk6 run-parts wxgtk
Reboot and plasma crashes with white screen.
Attempted to remove kde and re-install. After re-install, same plasma crash with white screen.I reviewed the posted bugs but do not have the same problem AFAICT.
The problem occured following an upgrade of the noted packages but does not seem related to them.
My display turns white and I have no out except to go to a terminal. Dmesg reports plasma crashes with error 4.
Neopmuk is also part of the crash statement with a reference to libQtCore.so.4.4.3 error 4.
I know next to nada about plasma or neopmuk.
I am not using kdemod...full kde4.
It never shows up.
I have a back-up system which I don't want to upgrade due to this plasma crash.
I have a good ext4 system running with kde4 also but hesitate to upgrade for the same plasma problem area.
Not having much success with kde4...have a problem with akonadi as well which extends my boot time to more than 2 minutes due to server searches and failure to find needed files for akonadi.
Google search doesn't cover my failure problem. -
Mavericks keep crashing periodically at random time.
Ever since I upgraded my Macbook pro mid 2009 to Mavericks, it keeps crashing periodically at radom time. The OS just reboots itself when the kernal panic. I am getting tired of the crashing. Help me out please. Here is one of the crash report.

Thunderbolt Bus:I have no idea if this will help. I've tried others suggestions, like unplugging the keyboard and replugging it; didn't work. I tried restarting; didn't work. I tried rebooting in safe and repairing disk permissions; didn't work. I tried everything. Then I thought since sending over 20 crash reports out to apple didn't really seem to be getting any results, (I'm sure they are busy fixing other things) I will continue to tinker with my system, which hasn't been stable for a full day, until the last two days, where I haven't had one crash yet. Here's what I did that seems to have worked, although I cannot guarantee any results for anyone else:
Go into system preferences, security&privacy and turn OFF what Apple suggested to turn on, that is 'Require Password XX hour aftersleep or screen saver begins. Mine is now unchecked. The next box is also unchecked (show a message when the screen is locked) and the next, 'Disable automatic login' IS checked.
The other thing I changed was Setting the diplay, under 'Energy Saver' in system preferences, to Computer Sleep: NEVER and Display sleep: NEVER. Wake for network access is also checked under the energy saver system preferences.
That's all I changed and my system seems to be stable now. I haven't had a restart in 2 days, and I had over 20 previous to that, since upgrading to Mavericks.
Please let me know if this helped anyone or if this too, is just a flukey 'worked for me only' suggestion.
I don't suggest doing this on a laptop that's not secure, though, as you run the risk of keychained passwords being accessed. I live in a secure building and am on an iMac (2009) so thought it would be fine to disable screen security settings as there is limited access to my building. Good luck, hopefully Apple will come out with an update to prevent these random crashes. It's incredibly annoying and negligent, that they didn't test all models of computers that Mavericks would be approved for and installed on. Everything has its price, I guess, and this software update certainly wasn't 'free' as it has cost me tonnes of time and lost revenue from work. -
ITunes shuts down at seemingly random times (read others like this before)
I have a Windows 8 PC, 11.0 up to date version. I was getting a system sound at random times and concurrently the file would stop playing. Here is what I did .. I changed the system sound for "Device Connect" and made it something totally recognizable. Typical email sound and other error sounds come out and there is no problem. I think it is something linked to "Device Connect". Is it hardware or is iTunes battling for connection or what? When it happens I am able to close and restart iTunes .. but this is ridiculous. Anybody got a thought, direction or idea on what this might be?
A hard drive that's almost filled to capacity can have problems, especially if there's a lot of fragmentation. The drive could also have a hardware problem that's causing the read/write heads to stick, causing a system hang. If you want to continue using this Mac, I'd install a larger hard drive (120 GBs is the max. retail size that's recognized at full capacity). A worst case scenario would be a flaky processor. I had a G3-333 MHz ZIF processor in a beige G3 that would act up and cause system hangs. Once I replaced it, the quirky behavior disappeared. Unfortunately, your iMac's processor is soldered to the processor card. Unless you really want to keep using it, you should decide if it's worth investing any money trying to troubleshoot the problem.

For a good few months now Firefox has quite frequently been crashing on me for no reason that i can distinguish. I have attempted to fully re-install Fire-Fox with a fresh install and tried sorting out the addons but nothing seems to help. I also ensure to run it in administrator mode for windows 7 but again, to no success. Basically i could be browsing the web perfectly fine and it will randomly crash on a website, what websites it crashes on changes all the time, some times it even crashes on my google homepage constantly and often only a computer restart will sort it out. It will then run fine for a short while before inevitably Firefox will crash again. If i could find out whats causing these crashes i could then work on stopping them. Thanks in advance for any support.

The 'e' key stops working at seeming random times.
Several times now I've come to the computer to wake it up, and can't login to my account apparently because the 'e' key is not recognized when I try to type in the password. It does not seem to be a keyboard issue, because when I plug in a different one, it still has the same issue. When this happens, I have to turn off the compter by holding down the power button on the back. Of course this means I've lost anything that wasn't saved. After the computer boots up, it appears to work fine afterwards. Intervals between this problem have gone from once every couple weeks, to once every couple of days. It appears to be only the 'e' that is affected.
Any ideas? The problem seems to be related to an alternate keyboard layout I sometimes use for writing in Esperanto. It appears that if the computer goes to sleep when this layout is active, the password requester won't recognize either the 'e' or the 'a' keys. This is rather strange, since this layout doesn't redefine either of these keys.
The work-around is that I've changed my password so that it doesn't use either of these keys. One I'm properly logged in, the keyboard works normally.
The particular layout I use is an old one, with the last update on the readme file dated 2004. I haven't been able to find a newer version of this layout, and other Esperanto layouts I've found remap the keyboard differently from this one. It'd be like learning to type all over again. I don't want to do that if I can avoid it.
I appreciate the help and advice. I knew that just turning off the power was a bad idea, but I didn't know what else to do, if I was unable to log in in the first place. -
It happens completely randomly. Also, when I tried wearing a persona recently, it crashed after 10 seconds. The browser still crashes when I don't wear it.

IMac G3 333 Freezes at Seemingly Random Times
Hello all,
I have an iMac G3 333 that runs OS 10.4.10 beautifully... except it locks up/freezes and I can't figure out why. I will use it for a while and then suddenly the mouse pointer stops moving and the keyboard doesn't work. If iTunes is playing the music skips then stops. Nothing happens on the screen. At that point the Mac must be unplugged because the power button doesn't work either. I typically get about 20 minutes of use out of it before a crash. Everything else is normal. If it sits left alone and the screen saver turns on it's happy to sit indefinitely. It also is comfortable waking up after falling asleep.
It is a 333 that I upgraded to 256 MB of RAM (filled both slots). Original 6 gig or so hard drive (I know, cramped, but it works). I also changed the motherboard battery. No other software installed.
Weird part is that this problem also happened when running OS 9.2.2 with the original 32 MB of RAM. At the time, I attributed it to OS 9 extensions. I did do all firmware updates before upgrading to OS 10. I did a complete reformat and reinstall.
I have tried:
memtest in single user mode (all RAM checks out ok)
repair permissions
verify disk (several times and in single user mode)
reset PRAM multiple times
holding the motherboard reset button
reinstalling OS 10.4
not using my surge protector (stupid, but i tried it)
taking the fan out, cleaning all the dust from it, and reinstalling (maybe it was/is overheating?)
I cannot figure out what could be going on. I have spent a lot of time inside Macs (I also tinker with an SE/30), but this one baffles me. If you have a suggestion I would really appreciate it.
DaveA hard drive that's almost filled to capacity can have problems, especially if there's a lot of fragmentation. The drive could also have a hardware problem that's causing the read/write heads to stick, causing a system hang. If you want to continue using this Mac, I'd install a larger hard drive (120 GBs is the max. retail size that's recognized at full capacity). A worst case scenario would be a flaky processor. It started late last month i was just browsing some websites and all of a sudden my browser crashed. The sites I was browsing had nothing like flash or any other kind of video media on them, they were all text and image sites. And since then I've had several crashed at random and some very inconvenient intervals like online banking. These are the 5 most recent crashes I hope they can be helpful. Thank you very much for your help in advance.

'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click Help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled''.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on ''Help'' (or click on ''Help'' in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled''.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode''
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem. -
Firefox has been randomly crashing for two days. I always have google and facebook running. Firefox seems to crash at random times - no specific web page loading. My Firefox is up to date.
There can be multiple reasons for crashing. Seeing this article would be helpful as it lists out the solution for this-

Latest update causes seemingly random crashes
I recently updated to the new version of 2.2. The update seemed to go without a hitch. Within an hour I had my first taste of what was to come. Listening to the ipod music (not a third party app), it just crashed in the middle of a song. It shows the apple icon and reboots. about 8-10 minutes later, it just stops playing and locks up. When manually rebooting the phone, and reopening the ipod, it crashed after the third song. It also does this while watching video(s). Seemingly at random times with NO user interaction. Pandora application rarely gets by 1 or 2 songs now. I now have trouble syncing to the appstore, itunes and mail.
The 3G reception bars now suddenly drop from full to nothing, then back again. The wireless connection is less stable. .......I'm sitting here right now watching the bars go from full to nothing at seemingly random intervals never lasting more than 30 seconds. The phone is just sitting here doing nothing. It seems to me that the crashing/reboot behavior is similar to a memory leak or something similar that can allow the phone to handle so much (I don't know what it could be since it is seems so random, yet frequent) before crashing.
I have restored the phone and tried a new install and have the exact same results. The previous update left me happy if not at least functional. I didn't have any issues as frequent as this. My phone is basically useless now since none of the applications proprietary or not seem to work for long now.
Is anyone having similar issues they could share some secret iphone handshake to make it work again, or has anyone had any luck getting through to tech support? I'm not having any luck there currently.I suspect its most likely a Java bug.
You're best off reporting it to Sun, err I mean oracle. -
Firefox keeps on crashing, it seems to happen at random
I have been having a ton of issues with firefox just seemingly randomly crashing. It crashes probably once every 20 minutes of use and is very frustrating. It doesn't seem to consistently happen on any specific web page. It happens on both my macbook pro and my windows 7 machine. I have the same extensions installed on both machines. Even if it is an extension causing the crash shouldn't firefox be robust enough to withstand an extension crashing.
I'm not sure how to proceed.

3GS crashes every time it rings, and also at other random times
Hi - my 3GS is running OS4.2.1 and has recently started crashing whenever anyone calls me (which is useful in a phone), and also without warning at other random times.
It's like it dies - the screen fades out and I have to switch back on with the power button. If I'm near a speaker I can hear the signal interference still going on, but the phone is unresponsive and needs rebooting.
I had a macbook pro that used to do this as well - just turn itself off randomly, which was really infuriating. I hope it's not in-built apple trickery to try to get me to shell out more cash after a set period of time (had the phone a couple of years, had the mbp a couple of years)...
Any assistance much appreciated - I don't really want to restore the phone and wipe everything, but I'm bracing myself for that advice.
Thanks,
PaulFirst, replace your sim. Your carrier/provider should give you a new one for free. If no change, try restoring your phone from your most recent backup. Follow this with syncing your iTunes content back to your phone. You won't lose any data or settings. While this will restore a fresh copy of the OS, if your problem is being caused by corrupt data on your phone, this will merely restore the problem. If no change after doing this, the next step is to restore as a "new" device in iTunes, again followed by syncing your content back to your phone. All saved data on your phone will be erased. If no change after restoring as a new device, your phone most likely has a hardware issue. If under warranty, make an appointment at an Apple store. If out of warranty, Apple has an out of warranty replacement program. Cost in the US is $199.
