KDE problem

Just installed Archlinux-2007.05-Duke-current.
After making xorg.conf went into X (windowmaker).
Installed KDE: pacman -S kde. great.......
Started KDE and find the menu practically empty.
Have to start Konqueror via Run command.
Starting kcontrol gives an empty tree (left side of window), so can't configure desktop.
Have installed all packages as suggested by pacman, except ktoys and kdeedu.
What's missing?

pacman -Qi|grep kde:
kde-common 3.5.7-1
kdeaccessibility 3.5.7-1
kdeaddons 3.5.7-1
kdeadmin 3.5.7-1
kdeartwork 3.5.7-1

kdemultimedia 3.5.7-1
kdenetwork 3.5.7-1
kdepim 3.5.7-1
kdesdk 3.5.7-1

In konsole kcontrol & brings up the KDE Control center window and tells me:

  • Firefox File handling in KDE problem [SOLVED]

    Recently I've noticed that Firefox doesn't give me a default app to open a file anymore. I mean, if I click on a PDF file, it used to open a dialog offering me to open it with kpdf (default). Now that same dialog just offers me to browse for the application I want to open the file with, so I have to manually browse to /opt/kde/bin/kpdf each and every time ! And the same with other file types. Does anybody else experience this?
    You can test it clicking on this link:
    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.
    EDIT: I think this is related to this bug, since my /etc/mailcap and /etc/mime.types are empty except for java entry:
    http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6801
    EDIT2: No, it doesn't have anything to do with that bug. It should work without /etc/mailcap.

    Ok, I found the problem.
    In order to have Firefox offering you the default application to open a certain file, you need to install libgnome !
    I removed bluefish some days ago with its dependencies and since then it stopped working.
    libgnome depends on gnome-mime-data, gconf, gnome-vfs and libbonobo, but none of these are enough to make Firefox work correctly. It really needs libgnome.
    Not sure if it would be a good idea to put these dependencies on Firefox. Probably not. Each one should decide if it's worth or not. Maybe some info would be useful, though.

  • From KDEmod to KDE, problems

    Hi.
    I had installed KDEmod and I deleted it yestarday (pacman -R kdemod-uninstall) then i installed kde (pacman -S kde).
    But it generated some problems:
    - KDM won't start now now:
    (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
    (==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
    (EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad no synaptics event device found
    (EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8
    (EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
    (EE) PreInit failed for input device "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
    - I can't normally shutdown computer (no option in menu > leave)
    - I can't set processor speed for powersave etc.
    Please help.

    I dis the same as you some time ago, i.e. switched from kdemod to arch kde...I ran the command
    pacman -R kde-meta
    to solve my problems.   When I tried to simply install kde I ran into a plethora of problems.  Also make absolutely sure that you have no kdemod packages lyinga around before you do the update, run
    pacman -Q | grep kdemod
    and uninstall all packages.  Also least but not last, make sure you are not in the kde desktop enviroment when you run these commands.  Hope this helps.

  • KDE problems

    Since upgrading to xorg 7 and kde 3.5.1 i have the following strange problem.
    And i cant see whats missing , i even tried reinstalling xorg and kde.
    KDE starts up fine even the jittery startup audio is fixed but when i open a window be it a terminal or browser and then minimise it to put it in the kicker it disappears.
    But if i open the terminal again it says number 2 and on and on.
    I dont know where kde is putting these apps but they are not dead.
    But i cant see them on the task bar to maximise them its blank apart from the time and my start button and icons.
    HELP
    Justin Smithies

    I have found something out if this helps ?
    If i click my middle mouse button on the desktop i can see the opened terminal / browsers and open them.
    Why are they no longer going to the task bar ?
    How do i get this feature back that when i minimise an app it goes to the task bar, not just disapears until i click the middle button on the desktop ?

  • More KDE problems

    So yeah, I have managed to download KDE, and now I'm having trouble starting it...
    I feel dumb, forgive me for posting this much on the forums this evening.
    I see in the KDE wiki page that there are 2 ways to start KDE.  So I first try KDM.  When I did pacman -S kdebase-workspace it seems like it had already been installed.  I guess when I downloaded KDE?  Then I see on this wiki page that an "example configuration for KDM" can be found at /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.  So I try to vim that, and it's empty, oh joy.  I then try to ls /usr/share/config/kdm and I see there's a README file.  Oh wait, that's blank too -_-  Whatever, so then I try to enter this command as instructed:
    kdesu kcmshell4 kdm
    And the output is this:
    Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/20-unhint-small-dejavu-sans-mono.conf", line 1: no element found
    [insert about 5 more lines of "fontconfig errors" for different fonts here, all saying "line 1: no element found]
    kdesu: cannot connect to X server
    So at this point I throw my hands in the air and give up on "KDM" and decide to try method #2, "xinitrc."  I copy xinitrc to ~ and comment out "exec startkde" as instructed.  I then type xinit in the command line, and the output shows a bunch of initializing built in stuff, and then it says
    [dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF/, removing from list!
    /home/ben/.xinitrc: line 15: /usr/bin/startkde: Success
    xinit: connection to X server lost
    waiting for X server to shut down (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
    So then I try startx.  Same thing minus the bit about font path element.
    What should I try... ?

    ewaller wrote:Does X work on your machine?  Has it worked in the past, or is this a brand new installation?  Could you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ??
    Erm... startx does not work if that's what you mean.  I'm pretty sure that was the command that worked yesterday, before I started all of this KDE stuff.  It was just a very crude looking "GUI" if you can even call it that, with three windows that I had to type exit in to get back to the command line.  Yesterday was also when I installed this onto the flash drive, so it's a pretty new installation...

  • Ndiswrapper and kde problem

    hi!!
    i have arch with all the newst updates i use ndiswrapper and when i boot my arch i write this in the root tty1 console iwconfig wlan0 essid osv and connect to my network with dhcpcd but wen i write startx the kde is startting very slowly no i mean it wont start but wen i write dhcpcd -k wlan0 and turn of the network then it starts good
    i dont know if this is in use to know but i cannot ping 127.0.0.1 or myhost localhost osv.

    glad:  You can make this much easier on yourself by using the 'network' daemon on the DAEMONS array in rc.conf.  The comments in that file describe exactly how to properly configure it.
    I use the folowing settings:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    wlan_wlan0="wlan0 essid MyESSID"
    INTERFACES=(lo wlan0)

  • Catalyst and KDE Compositing Problem

    Hi,
    I'm new to Arch and just installed it using the chakra-livecd.
    I've had some issues with fglrx, but after installing the newest version from kensais repo + the patched xorg-server from AUR it works.
    Dmesg gets spammed with this error:
    [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_close] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7fa230d2b000,handle:0xe7532000
    I've stopped getting them logged with the help of this post: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 25#p571625
    Is there any way to get those errors out of dmesg, or to completly fix them?
    As for my KDE problem:
    I only have the thumbnails in Cover Switch.
    Present Windows, Taskbar, and the Desktop Grid don't show any thumbnails (black/grey boxes).
    thanks for your time

    Just checked the output of "kwin --replace"
    Another Error-Spam \o/
    kwin(2779) KWin::checkGLError: GL error ( PostPaint ): 0x "500"
    /edit: Hooray, renaming ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and restartin kwin fixed my KDE problem.
    /edit2: Just downgraded to 2.6.28, modified catalyst from AUR (dependencies to 2.6.28 and removing .29 Patch), and my dmesg is clear \o/
    So far I had to modify the PKGBUILD for my X-Fi (PCIe Versions need patching, i guess i should drop a comment at the ctxfi package) and catalyst. I expected this to be quite hard for me, but using yaourt and reading the PKGBUILDS was enough.

  • Non-Latin characters in Sylpheed's subject when in gnome/kde

    So, this is curious and i'm not expecting an answer, but anyway i post it:
    Sylpheed 0.9.5 [simple, not claws], works ok when opened in fluxbox or window maker; but when opened in gnome or kde, following curious behaviour shows:  in the "Subject" field, when I switch over to greek keyboard layout, it doesn't show greek characters but some not identified encoding, probably iso8859-2 or so.  This is mirrored everywhere where "Subject" field shows [ie in the headers on top of the message].  But then, if i type some greek characters in "Subject" field (which show weird there) and then copy-paste them in the message body (when composing a message), then they show allright as the greek characters i intended to type.  In the message body everything shows as it should be, ie greek, there's no problem there or when composing a message, only the subject (and only in kde & gnome).  Needless to say that this "subject" encoding behaviour also shows in message list, so most messages of mine cannot be identified via message list in sylpheed.
    Every locale setting in Arch is correct, so please don't focus there. This doesn't happen in slackware 9.0 or 9.1 or in debian sid, so it's probably either a gnome/kde problem or a sylpheed problem.
    I'm interested to know if there's someone else facing the same problem with sylpheed in arch [and probably with gtk+1.2 apps]. By this i don't neccessarily mean with greek but say with cyrillic or some other character set and encoding.
    So, this is it.  Any clues?

    The funny thing is that bold font [when message unread in message list] shows OK, ie in greek, but when i click on unread message, it is assumed to have been read, so it changes over to medium [non bold] and the encoding changes as well into the one that is not greek and thus unreadable.  In ~/.sylpheed/sylpheedrc the fonts are:
    widget_font=
    message_font=-microsoft-sylfaenarm-medium-r-normal-*-*-160-*-*-p-*-iso8859-7
    normal_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    bold_font=-monotype-arial-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    small_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    In /etc/gtk, for gtk1.2 apps the file refering to greek encoding [el] seems to be fine [exactly the same as in slackware 9.1].

  • Printers not shown in gtk apps under KDE 4.7

    Sorry if asked before, I searched a lot and tried many things but couldn't find a fix.
    No gtk based app are showing my configured printers. This includes LibreOffice, GIMP and Chromium. The printers are, however, shown properly in every kde app and in Opera. http://localhost:631/printers/ also shows "No printers."
    I'm running KDE 4.7.2.
    Things I already tried:
    - cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I already have installed libgnomeprint
    - HostNameLookups Double in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I'm already in lpadmin group, which I also added to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    I don't really know when this problem started, probably a few weeks ago.
    Thanks in advance.

    Same issue here. Problem only occurs if you are using a custom shortcut (not one of the shortcuts mentioned in Main Shortcut.
    I did a quick search and this is the only related post I have found on the topic so it seems like an Arch only problem. If it is a KDE problem, this http://www.commit-digest.org/issues/201 … 79ffe2ed8/ bug-fix could be the reason.

  • Spanish keyboard in KDE 3.5.4

    Hello!
    I've a problem with my keyboard in kde.
    I've installed 0.7.2 version.
    The problem is with spanish characters ñÑ, á, é, .... When i type those characters kde show a square instead of character.
    This is only kde problem, in console mode and in gnome keyboard works well, but if i use kde application in gnome (kwrite, kconsole, ...) doesn't work well.
    Before, i've another arch version and kde works well with spanish characters.
    How can i fix it? Is it a kde's bug?
    Thanks.

    It's a problem with locale.
    I uncomment the lines i need, run locale-gen and it's works.
    thanks

  • Kde 3.4 beta 2 transparency in taskbar

    kde 3.4 beta 2 rocks...one tiny thing though, and im not sure if its a kde problem or a package problem...when i select the transparency option for the panel, a small section towards the right of the panel doesnt show the underlying wallpaper perfectly...its just a little bit messed up, but only in that one area, which is rectified if i hide/unhide the panel...just a small problem...happens every time i log on..does anyone have a soultion?
    Thanks!

    I don't use KDE 3.4beta2 yet... but I could suggest the following:
    1. post a screenshot
    2. http://bugs.kde.org (it might get fixed in the release) - make sure you link the screenshot also

  • [SOLVED] Dota 2 Feels Laggy/Jumpy in KDE

    I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem playing games in KDE.  I noticed it just didn't feel smooth even though the frames per second was reporting as 90-100fps.  I could particularly tell when scrolling through the map, it kept "jumping" not a smooth scroll at all.  I confirmed it was a KDE problem by installing Openbox, reloading into a blank session and launching Dota 2 from there.  The fps stayed about the same but all the "jumpiness" went away and it was very smooth like it should be.
    I'm using the Nvidia 337.19 proprietary drivers from the [extra] repo and my specs are:
    Intel i2500K
    Geforce GTX 770
    16 GB RAM
    Last edited by weirddan455 (2014-05-28 16:49:56)

    Yea I know I *shouldn't* have problems but I am (and only with KDE.)  I'm not using Wine.  I'm using the native Steam client.  I was just wondering if any other KDE users ran into this problem and know of a possible fix.  At the moment I'm having to close out of KDE completely and start an empty Openbox session just to play.  I played a couple full games to confirm and the difference is night and day in terms of smoothness... definitely not a placebo effect.  It's like the frames aren't syncing up right in KDE or something.  I have a quad core processor and plenty of RAM so I would think that would be enough resources to handle KDE in the background but it looks like something else is at play here.

  • KDE 4 shutdown graphics glitches

    Most of these images came from Firefox, from a website called egotastic, though I didn't even have Firefox open when I took this. I can see a bit of Wikipedia at the bottom, too, and toward the top a letter from the graphic novel Watchmen.
    Maybe this is another nVidia 8xxx/9xxx and KDE problem? I guess that the graphics card might hold old images in RAM. It's not really a problem, just an oddity.

    milan wrote:Good news is that Nvidia published new Linux driver yesterday, so hopefully this issues have been solved.
    Take a look at this thread http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=115916 because if you have a newer nvida card you should try the beta versions. Perhaps it helps too if you take a look at the hints of the first page from this thread. Good Luck.

  • I cannot seem to find the DE for me

    See one problem that happens to many Linux users is that they become nomads. (My friend has fallen to this fate. Arch's simplicity isn't the solution to everyone I guess.) Distro hoppers. Liking parts of one distro and parts of others and changing their distro all the time.
    I have found my home in archlinux though. It seems to be the best distro for a desktop user who uses an Intel processor.
    But I cannot find the DE/WM that is right for me.
    I like xfce the most, but I cannot get icons working with it. (on 4.4) One day when I tried to install a theme xfce went kablooie. I also have to enable testing to download it, which means unstable stuff gets sent down my way and my computer screws up. (Unless I do something smart like only enabling testing to install xfce rather than pacman -Syu'ing the whole testing repo.)
    I hate gnome. I just never understood anything about it, other than gnome dependancies that infect many programs. (Sorry if I am using harsh words, gnome lovers will hate me.)
    I don't like KDE so much either, I just got it today but I already am looking to change it. I like it because of two things. Konqueror is the best file manager hands down. It isn't too bloated, it does files and executes things properly *glares at rox*. It also has a sense of fashion and you can put a backgroun image on it. (which I have done.) The other thing is the kdesktop is nice, no other virtual desktop app seems to be anywhere near as good as it. Maybe Enlightenment is the answer I seek, but it feels complicated and I'm too lazy to learn it. I also can't seem to get Japanese input support in Qt apps working at all, only gtk apps. The other problem is that KDE is a little bloated, I don't like things that take up memory, but Arche has a lot of ram, so some stuff Marc is saying is getting into my head. But KDE in general is hard to use, it is user friendly and user friendly things are hard to use. (Ironic isn't it?)They make expectations of you and things never work the way you want them to work. My Devil's Pie scripts fail in KDE. I cannot even seem to pin Kopete to all workspaces, and I feel it might be the same for all Qt apps. When I ran zsnes only to find that after I open a game the window borders come back despite my scripts telling it to not be there I was upset. Sure, this problem has an easy solution, use KDE but configure alternatives to use Openbox or something that doesn't get in the way of my scripts as a WM. But then I have the other KDE problems.
    So then all the DE's are out of the question and I have to go for a WM. The proplem with WMs is that things don't work well together. You are also stuck on things like file managers and stuff that seem to always come with DEs.
    I'm tempted to go back to xfce, but then I'll be back where I started, and I'll have testing enabled again. Unless I get the old version of xfce, I can use gkrellm to moniter my system so the system moniter isn't needed so much but xffm sucks. I have an ok terminal now with Japanese support so screw a file manager and well when I look at things the path looks green.
    The point is, I'm going in circles when it comes to my desktop environment. I need help. T_T What do you guys use for your desktop? Especially from the people who use window managers, how on earth do you get everything to fit together? WMs are the best solution, but the hardest to get working. (Or so I believe.)
    I also need a web browser, Opera is nice and all but it is non-free software. It also uses Qt so Japanese support isn't great. I haven't gotten any emails from my Japanese friends today but how would I write Japanese emails if my browser has no Japanese support. Firefox is getting to use a lot of memory, and all the other browsers may be fine but they need gnome/kde dependancies.
    I remember reading the Archlinux forums about a browser that didn't need gnome/kde dependancies. It had a Japanese name if I'm not mistaken, I can't find it anymore. If anyone knows it it would be helpful.
    Anybody can help me?

    here's mine. It's a bit of a mess at the moment and the menus are in a separate file. I'm trying to integrate FVWM with ROX at the moment, but haven't had much time for it.
