Kde screen resolution with nvidia driver

Hi,
I am completely new to ArchLinux.  I really enjoyed installing it and its a hoot to play around with!
I am having a problem getting the screen resolution to work well with the monitor and the resolution with KDE 4.3.  I found that by changing the resolution to 1024x768 and changing the refresh rate to 53 or 54hz, the fonts that otherwise display horribly with the nvidia driver and installed nvidia card will suddenly become beautiful.  I went to Kmenu, Settings, then display settings, and changed the configuration, and everything worked great.
But on next boot up after I have shut down the computer, X doesn't remember these settings and the fonts look terrible again.  If I open the kmenu again and look at the display settings, they are still set at 1024x768 and 54 hz.  Once I have looked at them, the screen on the monitor goes dark for a second.  Then the computer knows that I want those settings without me changing anything, and adjusts to them without having to hit the apply button.  Then the fonts look great again.
How can I get the display to start with those settings?  I have tried several configurations of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file without success, so I need some help.
Thanks

I know some time back using nvidia driver with my particular monitor, i had to tell it what resolution/refresh rate to use by default or else X would make a poor choice as to what it wanted the default to be (put me in 800x600 or something like that  by default).  I was able to tell X to default to what I wanted by adding in a Metamode line in my xorg.conf, i think under the screen section. I'm out right now and won't be back to my box to look up exactly what I did, but hopefully this might give a starting point if you havent tried it already.  Metamodes in xorg.conf under the Display section if i remember right.  I specified a resolution there and it now uses that as the default.

  • Changing screen resolution with a button

    Hi,
    I would like to ask if there is a way for an interface to change the screen resolution of the computer? I am wanting to build an interface that loads an interactive camera that works with processing however I am needing it to be at the resolution 800*900 as the webcam screen is too small on a full 1680x1050 resolution.
    Is there a way for the flash application to change the screen resolution with a button click? Are  there any alternatives to this?
    Thank you
    Jess

    It is to display a portfolio at my design school for assessment, they will accomodate any necessary things that i may need for assessment viewing so it is very important to me.
    Do you know what programs will work with this? What program would i have to install?
    I only need to do this for my assessment so it is almost a desperate search for something that would work.

  • Problem with nvidia driver (bumblebee)

    I have problem with nvidia driver. It's not work with bumblebee. nouveau works, but nvidia not. My laptop: Clevo W110ER (i7 3612, GF GT650M).
    ----- optirun glxspheres -----
    - nouveau: works, but 3d is very slow (on Intel is better)
    - nvidia: Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:1:0:0. Please ...
    Linux kernel: 3.4~ (latest from REPO).
    How to configure it? (On Ubuntu works, on Arch not).

    Your not the only one with nividia problems
    But on a more serious note, have you tried all configuration steps outlined in the Arch Wiki?

  • Problem with nvidia driver, causing system to be unusable

    Hello, I've got a problem I assume with nvidia driver. My graphics card is gtx 460, here's my usual glxgears output:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16474487/noerror.png
    After random amount of time (usually from 30 mins to ~2hours) something 'breaks' and here's what happens:

    I've tried different desktop environments, under xfce4 it also breaks, i've been testing also nvidia-beta and nvidia-all drivers, but it won't help. After 'breaking' i must restart nvidia module, then all again is working fine.

    Hey Vazz, there is a problem with the nvidia linux drivers/gtx460 hardware, but sadly it only affects a small population.
    There is a thread on the nvidia support forums with many others having more or less the same problems.
    Still no response from nvidia yet...  In the meantime use nouveau.

    There are maybe some hacks, but I tried many times in vista and linux. And it's always the same, only 1280x1024.
    did some googling:

    Thanks for the reply, but I don't believe that's the problem since that topic is from 2006 and I didn't had any problems last time I instaled arch (3 months ago).

  • Compositing causes screen tearing with Nvidia, is ATI a better choice?

    So far, every Nvidia card I've used with Ubuntu, Debian and Arch has had intolerable screen tearing with a compositing manager running, while watching any video. I've installed the proprietary driver from Nvidia on a Debian machine but the screen tearing is still there. The cards I've been using are an 8600GT and a 9600GT.
    I've tried xcompmgr, Xfce compositing and Gnome compositing all of which seem to cause the same symptoms.
    It seems like I read somewhere that there's a problem with the Nvidia compositing extension or something like that...
    Two questions...
    1) Do ATI cards tear video with compositing enabled? (I'm hoping they don't...)
    2) Is there any way to cure screen tearing with an nvidia card and compositing enabled?

    ATI Radeon 4670 user here, KDE w/ Arch Linux. While I can't speak for other video cards, this particular card runs absolutely fine using xf86-video-ati and some xorg.conf tweaks. Though I don't play many games, I can tell you Alice runs fine via WINE. As far as OpenGL goes, the screen savers that are supposedly OpenGL work fine, too.
    The only performance difference between this card and the 7600GS I was using beforehand that I can tell (minus the speed improvement) is being forced to view videos using the Xvideo driver in KMPlayer. If I view said videos via OpenGL, they display, however widgets on the desktop tend to offer display glitches while the video is ongoing.
    I understand there's a good deal of reason for the commenting, and yes, ATI drivers aren't nearly up to par with their Nvidia counterparts, however this doesn't mean some folks aren't having success with the available driver(s) using little effort on their parts. As an ATI user, it'd be nice to see some fellow reports of success with ATI drivers, open source or not.

  • Hires monitor with nvidia driver busted? [nevermind. used wrong cable]

    UPDATE: I'm an idiot. I screwed up connecting the cable and used a single channel DVI cable, despite being perfectly aware of the need to use dual. Swapped in the right cable and all's well.
    I got a Dell u2711 monitor and expected it to just work. When I try to run it at 2560x1440 everything looks wrong; it's not just fonts, even the mouse cursor is somehow screwed up. Text is unreadable. Yes, I'm using the dual channel DVI cable.
    The information xrandr reports appears correct:
        $ xrandr
        DVI-I-2 connected 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 597mm x 336mm
           2560x1440      60.0*+
    xdpyinfo says something else, though.
        $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
        screen #0:
          dimensions:    4240x1440 pixels (997x342 millimeters)
          resolution:    108x107 dots per inch
    I thought maybe the disagremement on dimensions was the problem so I plopped
    this into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf
        Section "Monitor"
            Option    "UseEdidDpi"    "false"
            Identifier "Monitor0"
            DisplaySize 597 336
        EndSection
        Section "Screen"
            Identifier    "Screen0"
            Monitor       "Monitor0"
        EndSection
    It did indeed change what xdpyinfo reports, but everything looks the same (squished and pixely). So it didn't work.
        $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
        screen #0:
          dimensions:    4240x1440 pixels (598x339 millimeters)
          resolution:    180x108 dots per inch
    I'm using the binary nvidia driver. I tried starting up with the Nouveau driver but that didn't improve things.
    I'm using a GeForce GTX 460 graphics card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814127510
    I do not know what's going on here or how to fix it. Is there a known issue using the Dell U2711 monitor with xorg and nvidia? Google doesn't seem to know about it.

    Vista Ultimate 64-bit recognizes 8 cores. 32-bit recognizes one physical cpu.
    I've had very little trouble in two years. And now I do like Windows 7 but also eager for the RC.
    I've been using the latest Nvidia. There is a method to the madness of how to uninstall/delete and install graphics drivers, or madness in the method. The W7 drivers are easier.
    Nope. Something else. More sensitive to disk errors. You aren't running a program to boost fans. Something.
    And some AV software is more prone to causing trouble. But all you need is a good AV/malware program, and even Norton AV 2009 is acceptable, or Avast or one of the others.

  • Laggy performance with Nvidia driver

    Greetings,
    I am trying to use my nvidia 9800 GTX card with the Nvidia driver in the official repos.  I have a dual monitor setup with gnome 3.10 installed.  Everything is snappy with the default configurations with the Noveau driver.
    A typical extended desktop environment would be preferable.  From what I understand from the multihead and multiple monitor sections of the wiki is that twinview or xinerama would accomplish this, but it is mentioned that xinerama does not work for this newer version of the nvidia driver.  I used nvidia-settings to set up the monitors in the right location and saved the config file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf as suggested in the wiki. I tried making some configuration changes to the tune of the examples in the wiki, but every change I make seems to result in an even buggier or unbootable x server.  I scrapped the nvidia driver and installed noveau to test it out, now  I'm back to the initial configuration on the nvidia driver.
    The display configuration is actually what I want now, but the system feels overly heavy and laggy.   Any suggestions?

    Is it safe to conclude that I did not properly install the nvidia driver since the output in the xorg file shows that nouveau module is being loaded?  I am not sure where I went wrong since the wiki says to simply
    pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils
    and the nouveau driver will be automatically blacklisted and the nvidia driver installed.
    I found this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … au_drivers which provides a script for switching between nvidia and nouveau drivers. It states the scripts may be
    out of date and the sed lines not necessary.  From what I see there was no "nouveau" module being loaded in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.
    As of now I removed the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages and reinstalled the nouveau driver as described in the wiki.  It is quick and stable now, but does not look nearly as nice as it would be with the proprietary drivers.  My system was incredibly buggy and unstable with the nvidia drivers installed, which I just don't understand.  My keyboard would not work at the login screen, and would complain about mounting some partitions I have in fstab.
    Here is the current information from my system:

    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array. For instance:
    # MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES=""
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
    # wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
    # override the actual binaries included by a given hook
    # BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES=""
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
    FILES=""
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    ## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.

  • W510 problems with Nvidia driver recovery under Windows 7 (64 bit)?

    Lenovo W510, Nvidia Qudardo FX 880M video, FHD:
    What I'm seeing on occasion is a Windows 7 (64-bit) recovery, screen blanks out, goes 2-3 seconds, then recovers, things go back to normal, but a message displays saying that an error was detected in the video driver, and it has recovered. The new Firefox (4.0.1) seems to be one of the things that may be a contribution, hard to tell.  Per System Update at least, I'm current on the Lenovo downloads. SIW shows the driver level as 8.17.12.5738 (2010-06-27). Nvidia web-site shows their current driver level on the wen-site as 270.61 (2011-04-18), which is a considerably newer date at least. So two questions:
    Has anyone else seen Driver/Recovery issues on Win 7 (64)
    Has anyone directly run the Nvidia video drivers and had them run OK?
    Seems like it would be nice for Lenovo to update their drivers, if indeed this is a driver issue, they appear back-level.

    I used to have this problem with my W510 running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit, especially Firefox 4 crashing the Nvidia display driver almost constantly. I googled and found that this is a known problem between older Nvidia driver and Firefox 4. Later on I downloaded the latest version of Nvidia driver from Lenovo website (it was not posted on the System Update server yet but was available on the regular download site). I clean-installed it (i.e., removing all files and settings created by the old driver) and I haven't experienced the problem since then.

  • Changing screen resolution with xrandr [SOLVED]

    My current setup consists of two different monitors (different resolutions) being connected to a single Nvidia card (neouveau driver).
    The problem is that the monitor resolution does not change when I use xrandr to change the resolution. What does happen is the resolution of the output changes so that all items on the screen are smaller, but as a consequence of the monitor resolution staying constant (at 1440x900) this also leads to everything getting blury.
    Output for xrandr after booting:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 8192 x 8192
    DVI-I-1 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 360mm x 290mm
    1440x900 60.2*+
    1920x1080 60.0
    1280x1024 75.0 60.0
    1360x768 60.4
    1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0
    832x624 74.6
    800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
    640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0
    720x400 70.1
    DVI-I-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    Output after changing the resolution to 1920x1080:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
    DVI-I-1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 360mm x 290mm
    1440x900 60.2 +
    1920x1080 60.0*
    1280x1024 75.0 60.0
    1360x768 60.4
    1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0
    832x624 74.6
    800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
    640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0
    720x400 70.1
    DVI-I-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    I have set up both of these monitors to work fine today, except for the resolution problem. The DVI-I-2 seen has a maximum resolution of 1440x900, which is what both monitiors are running at although DVI-I-1 has a max of 1920x1080.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how to succeed in setting DVI-I-1 to the desired resolution?

    Yes, GPU support for dual head is there. I think I will try out the Nvidia drivers.
    Edit: I have installed the Nvidia driver and everything is working perfectly. Thanks for your suggestion.

  • [SOLVED] Changing screen resolution with xrandr.

    Been googling around after a way to change my screen resolution.
    I'm on a Acer Aspire Timeline 3810t with the resolution 1366x768.
    I wanted to change my resolution to something like 1900x1200 and found a guide explaining how to do this with xrandr.
    This is what I did:
    jorgen ~ $ xrandr
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
    LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 293mm x 165mm
       1366x768       60.0*+
       1024x768       60.0
       800x600        60.3     56.2
       640x480        59.9
    VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    jorgen ~ $ cvt 1900 1200
    # 1904x1200 59.93 Hz (CVT) hsync: 74.61 kHz; pclk: 191.00 MHz
    Modeline "1904x1200_60.00"  191.00  1904 2032 2232 2560  1200 1203 1213 1245 -hsync +vsync
    jorgen ~ $ xrandr --newmode "1904x1200_60.00"  191.00  1904 2032 2232 2560  1200 1203 1213 1245 -hsync +vsync
    jorgen ~ $ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 1904x1200_60.00
    X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
      Major opcode of failed request:  150 (RANDR)
      Minor opcode of failed request:  18 (RRAddOutputMode)
      Serial number of failed request:  33

    Does anybody have an idea about what I am doing wrong, or why I get this error?

    Ok, I found some good documentation - the wiki. (Been in ubuntu so long that I forgot to check the official documentation before going to the forums :S)

        Identifier    "Monitor0"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
        Identifier    "Device0"

    But it still won't switch to any other resolution than 1366x768. Anybody see anything wrong with this?
    Good, you've learnt to use the wiki, please do that first from now on (google as well). Also, please use code-tags, makes it easier to read code/conf-files.
    It looks like you're trying to set your laptop screen to a resolution higher than it can go. Hint: not possible. If you had an external screen with a higher res then you could use that, but the resolution is limited both by the screen and the graphics card, and I haven't heard of any laptop screen with such a high resolution.

  • X wont start with nvidia driver?

    Hi, installed x and it runs fine with the xf86-video-nv driver but when trying to install the fine "nvidia" driver X wont start, have followed the wiki but errors appears:
    Failed to load the Nvidia kernel module
    Screens found, but none have a usuable configuration
    Fatal Server Error
    No screens found
    Giving up
    Xinit: no such file or directory...
    Writing this post from lynx so it might look kinda bad without BB code...=)
    Also did a new installation.
    1. Updated the system (Pacman -Syu)
    2. Installed Xorg (Pacman -S xorg)
    3. Installed nvidia driver (Pacman -S nvidia) Have a Quadro FX570M.
    4. Tried both X -configure and nvidia-xconfig and then followed the wiki changed any mesa, nv to nvidia. Also removed the Type1 entry.
    5. moved the xorg file cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    What have I missed? It's kinda hard to copy my xorg.conf file here using lynx and have no other computer here at the moment, might be able to post the file later on today!

    you might want to look at:
    Failed to load the Nvidia kernel module
    that might be a clue
    what happens when you do
    modprobe nvidia

  • [solved]No video output in Skype with nvidia driver - vesa works fine!

    Hi,
    I'm struggling to get Skype video working. The webcam works perfectly - the other side can see me. But I can see neither myself nor my opponent - the corresponding place in the Skype window just gets white. It doesn't matter whether Compiz is active or not. I can also see myself when using cheese, video output also works properly.
    Now, I supposed that it's an issue with my graphics driver (the proprietary nvidia driver) and changed it to vesa in the xorg.conf. Well, I have a resolution of 800x600 now, but the video in Skype is working perfectly! I will go ahead and try an older version of the nvidia driver but maybe it's a known issue and there is a workaround?
    Thanks,
    PhotonX
    edit: Same problem on the 173 driver version.

  • Screen resolution with Mode in BDC

    Hi All,
    In call transaction statement I am using mode as well as options from statement but 1 error is coming that i can't use mode and update with options from statement. But I want to run in background as mode 'N' as well as I want the default screen resolution.
    Please tell me some way to solve this issue.
    Regards,
    Sivaram

    Hi ,
    You need not use mode. You can set the values in OPTIONS itself.
    Eg :
    Declare a structure of type ctu_params.
    Data :gs_params type ctu_params.
         gs_params-dismode  = 'N'.
         gs_params-defsize  = 'X'.
    Call transaction 'MM01' using gt_bdccat
                                         messages into gt_bdcmsg
                                         options from gs_parms.
    Try this .
    Best Regards,
    Hari

  • Help!..Urgentfixed Screen Resolution with Graphics Configuration

    Hello, i am try to make our swing application resolution fixed.
    whatever is system resolution does't matter.
    my application always running on 1024 *768 mode.
    But i face some problem when i run the project with is feature and open any dialog by clicking on button and move that dialog box that dialog box is not visible(transparent) to me.
    I am try most of thing but my problem was not solve.
    Please give me any suggestion as soon as possible
    It's very very urgent....
    my code is : -
    GraphicsDevice graphicsDevice = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getDefaultScreenDevice();
    GraphicsConfiguration graphConfig = graphicsDevice.getDefaultConfiguration();
    DisplayMode displayMode = new DisplayMode(1024, 768, 32,DisplayMode.REFRESH_RATE_UNKNOWN);
    mainframe = new JFrame("",graphConfig);
                             graphicsDevice.setFullScreenWindow(mainframe);
    if(graphicsDevice.isDisplayChangeSupported()){
                                  graphicsDevice.setDisplayMode(displayMode);
         }

    I am using Images in my swing project if i used make
    my project screen resolution free than my image
    module in great trouble so that's the reason i could
    not made my swing application resolution free (run on
    any resolution).
    Bullshit. I have used Photoshop (various versions) and Illustrator (various versions) for 5 years now and not once have they forced resolution changes on me.
    This is a dumb idea and unneeded. Please give it up.
    Now here is what you should do. Post a question in the Swing forum about how you are having problems with LayoutManagers when you use images and blah blah. Be prepared to post a concise, compilable and executable program that demonstrates your problem.
    Best of luck.
