[KDE] sftp:// and smb:// are turtles

I have had experiments wrt speed between self-made home NAS and my workstation (with NetGear router between them). If I use smbclient to connect samba on NAS or lftp to connect to SSH on NAS, all is OK: the speed is about 12MiB/s, and this is a limit for 100Mbit LAN. If I use Krusader, a speed drops down to 8-9MiB/s for samba, and to 3MiB/s (!) for SSH. CPU consumption is about zero.
Is there those KDE secret configuration places to cure this KDE's shame?

  • Enabling UPNP and SMB in Macbook Pro

    Hi
I was running Universal Media Player on Macbook Pro (OSX 10.8) and my DLNA renderer (TV) was able to detect the server and play the media.
It was issued by my previous company and I returned it when I left.
I joined a new company where I got a Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9) and now I can't share media through Universal Media player. It can't find any renderers and the TV cannot find any servers. I'm using the same router settings and my TV is able to detect the servers from my other home devices.
I have enabled File Sharing and Remote Login in my Macbook's System preferences, and tried connecting through SMB or AFP, but I get server not found error messages.
I have even confirmed that the ports required using "Network Utility". The TCP ports 22(SFTP), 445(SMB) and 548(AFP) are open, but the UPNP(2869) is not open. The network utility did not report even a single open UDP port. Can it scan for UDP ports OR does it mean that there are no open UDP ports which is the main issue?
I also have my firewall turned off.
Still I'm unable to use SMB or UPNP. What is preventing me from accessing them?

I do have a bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse...This means i can work.
But the problem is i need to work out of home, and i don´t want to carry all those things everytime i have to go out.
    And you´re right, i don´t have warranty...
I´m sure i didn´t drop liquids over it. And although it did dropped once when it was new, nearly 4 years ago, it worked just fine for 3 years. About 8 months ago, keyboard and trackpad started to fail, until they just died.
I tried cleaning it and reinstalling OS, but nothing so far.
    Help!

  • Performance problems with DFSN, ABE and SMB

    Hello,
We have identified a problem with DFS-Namespace (DFSN), Access Based Enumeration (ABE) and SMB File Service.
Currently we have two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers providing the domain-based DFSN in functional level Windows Server 2008 R2 with activated ABE.
The DFSN servers have the most current hotfixes for DFSN and SMB installed, according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968429/en-us and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2473205/en-us
We have only one AD-site and don't use DFS-Replication.
Servers have 2 Intel X5550 4 Core CPUs and 32 GB Ram.
    Network is a LAN.
    Our DFSN looks like this:
    \\contoso.com\home
        Contains 10.000 Links
Drive mapping on clients to subfolder \\contoso.com\home\username
    \\contoso.com\group
        Contains 2500 Links
Drive mapping on clients directly to \\contoso.com\group
On \\contoso.com\group we serve different folders for teams, projects and other groups with different access permissions based on AD groups.
We have to use ABE, so that users see only accessible Links (folders)
We encounter sometimes multiple times a day enterprise-wide performance problems for 30 seconds when accessing our Namespaces.
After six weeks of researching and analyzing we were able to identify the exact problem.
Administrators create a new DFS-Link in our Namespace \\contoso.com\group with correct permissions using the following command line:
    dfsutil.exe link \\contoso.com\group\project123 \\fileserver1\share\project123
dfsutil.exe property sd grant \\contoso.com\group\project123 CONTOSO\group-project123:RX protect replace
This is done a few times a day.
There is no possibility to create the folder and set the permissions in one step.
DFSN process on our DFSN-servers create the new link and the corresponding folder in C:\DFSRoots.
At this time, we have for example 2000+ clients having an active session to the root of the namespace \\contoso.com\group.
Active session means a Windows Explorer opened to the mapped drive or to any subfolder.
The file server process (Lanmanserver) sends a change notification (SMB-Protocol) to each client with an active session \\contoso.com\group.
All the clients which were getting the notification now start to refresh the folder listing of \\contoso.com\group
This was identified by an network trace on our DFSN-servers and different clients.
Due to ABE the servers have to compute the folder listing for each request.
DFS-Service on the servers doen't respond for propably 30 seconds to any additional requests. CPU usage increases significantly over this period and went back to normal afterwards. On our hardware from about 5% to 50%.
Users can't access all DFS-Namespaces during this time and applications using data from DFS-Namespace stop responding.
Side effect: Windows reports on clients a slow-link detection for \\contoso.com\home, which can be offline available for users (described here for WAN-connections: http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2011/12/14/slow-link-with-windows-7-and-dfs-namespaces.aspx)
Problem doesn't occure when creating a link in \\contoso.com\home, because users have only a mapping to subfolders.
Currently, the problem doesn't occure also for \\contoso.com\app, because users usually don't use Windows Explorer accessing this mapping.
Disabling ABE reduces the DFSN freeze time, but doesn't solve the problem.
Problem also occurs with Windows Server 2012 R2 as DFSN-server.
There is a registry key available for clients to avoid the reponse to the change notification (NoRemoteChangeNotify, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812669/en-us)
This might fix the problem with DFSN, but results in other problems for the users. For example, they have to press F5 for refreshing every remote directory on change.
Is there a possibility to disable the SMB change notification on server side ?
    TIA and regards,
    Ralf Gaudes

  • HTTP and SMB over Cisco LAN-to-LAN IPSec-VPN

we are connecting Cisco 887VA router with various other Non-Cisco routers.
VPN tunnels are up and we can ping devices on the remote network through the VPN.
However, we have a few devices (on the Cisco lan) that provide a web interface (NAS etc) and these are not accessible over the VPN, the connection seems to just hang like its waiting for a response but it never gets one and eventually the browser times out.
Strangely, if I request a page that does not exist from the NAS (eg. http://192.168.3.x/test) I will receive a 404 error so it is kind of working.
Similar problems with SMB, if I access \\192.168.3.x I can list the content (4 items) but if I go into one of those folders (containing 10+ items) it hangs and eventually gives up.
I have tried adjusting MTU and MSS with no change.
Any ideas cause I'm running out of hair

  • KDE lag and artifacts

Hi, im very new in linux.
I used other distros (manjaro for example) with kde preinstalled and i dont had any issues.
After arch installation, i installed with pacman the propietary drivers of nvidia for my gtx 260 and then kde.
Sometimes when minimize/maximize a window, kde feels slow.
I do a pacman -Syu that update the graphics drivers. Reboot the system and only saw a black screen. I try start X and KDE, but i cant.
I uninstalled nvidia drivers and installed noveau. The same black screen. I installed again nvidia drivers (the old version, from pacman cache) and now all is like in the begining.
KDE runs fast and ocasionally lags a lot. Also, i have an 'artifact' (see the image below).
I also try changing openGL version, Qt graphics system and vsync in system settings => desktop effects, but don't fix my problem.
Also disable oxygen effects, but its the same.
The artifact is the white rectangle in the title bar. If the window isn't maximized i have no problem.
    The image link: http://i61.tinypic.com/2448y91.png
I don't use [img*] because the screen is big.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad english.

KDE is a pretty heavy-weight desktop environment. You should expect some lag if you're running on relatively old hardware.
That being said, you can change some settings around to make sure you're getting the best performance out of your system.
    1) Make sure you're using the proper drivers for your graphics card.
If you want to use the proprietary nvidia driver, make sure you're using the proper version. There are three versions of the nvidia proprietary drivers (one new and two legacy). I recommend checking all three to deterine which best supports your hardware. See [1].
    2) Tweak some KDE settings in "System Settings > Desktop Effects"
If you're on an nvidia card, you're safe to use OpenGL 3.1 as your compositing type [2]. Furthermore, various sources [3] (including the tool tip if you mouse over the box) recommend using Raster when using OpenGL.
Finally, see how smooth things get by toggling all desktop effects (Alt+Shift+F12). If you can live without compositing and nice effects, that's a good way to make KDE run faster. You can make this change persistent by unchecking "Enable...startup" under the "General" tab.

  • SAP XI support SFTP and FTPS?

    Hi Gurus,
I would like to find out if SAP XI supports both SFTP and FTPS. If yes, how do I perform the configuration?
    Thanks in advance.

    Business Case:
In many implementations Business requirement is to "secure" the file/data transfer between XI and any third-party system. So there is a need of secured connection between XI/PI and any file based third-party legacy systems.
Following solutions are proposed to cater secure connection between XI/PI and any third party systems.
    1) SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol)
"SSH File Transfer Protocol" or SFTP is a network protocol that provides file transfer and manipulation functionality over any reliable data stream. It is typically used with the SSH-2 protocol to provide secure file transfer. SFTP encrypts the session, preventing the casual detection of username, password or anything that is being transmitted. One key benefit to SFTP is its ability to handle multiple secure file transfers over a single encrypted pipe. By using a single encrypted pipe, there are fewer holes in the corporate firewall.
    2) FTPS (FTP over SSL)
FTPS (FTP-SSL) is a real ftp that uses TSL/SSL to encrypt the control session and if required the data session. With FTPS, the control session is always encrypted, but the data session may not be always encrypted. FTPS is a file transport layer on top of SSL. SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a method by which an encrypted u2018pipe' or tunnel is established between the FTP client and FTP server. Once the secure tunnel has been established (which is done using 128-bit encryption techniques), standard FTP is used to transfer data over the secure connection.
Feasibility of SFTP and FTPS in XI:
    SFTP:
As per the latest SAP PI/XI support pack, it does not support SFTP via File Adapter.
So alternative approach to cater this requirement from XI is to make use of Unix Script at OS level to transfer the files from/to third-party systems.
    Inbound Interface - i.e. third-party system ->XI->SAP:
File is transferred to a folder in SAP XI landscape from the third-party legacy system using UNIX Script with secured protocol. Once the file is ready in the XI landscape, File Adapter will poll this directory and file is picked up by NFS protocol.
    Outbound Interface u2013 i.e. SAP->XI->third-party system:
XI is responsible for writing a file into a folder in the XI landscape. These files are transferred to the third-party system by executing UNIX scripts with secured protocol i.e. via sFTP.
    Pre-Requisites:
Public key should be exchanged between external systems and the PI system.
UNIX shell script has to be developed and scheduled.
    Advantages:
    Highly Secured.
Ability to handle multiple secure file transfers over a single encrypted pipe .By using a single encrypted pipe, there are fewer holes in the corporate firewall.
    Disadvantages:
    Two-Step process i.e. XI>Temporary folder>External System and vice-versa
Files have to be temporarily stored in XI server.
Multiple failure points i.e. XI and Unix script execution
Maintenance of an external UNIX script.
Difficulty in monitoring the execution of the shell script as it cannot be monitored thru XI.
Need to generate keys and install it in the SFTP site as a pre-requisite i.e. SFTP clients must install keys on the server.
SFTP uses keys rather than certificates. This means that it can't take advantage of the "chains of trust" paradigm facilitated through Certificate Authorities.
Files from the XI server should be deleted/archived in a periodic manner to increase the disc space so that it will increase the performance.
Note: UNIX shell Script can be executed as a background job u2018or' can be triggered from SAP XI through OS command at File adapter level.
FTPS (File Transfer Protocol Using SSL/TLS):
This is a built-in feature of File adapter in XI. But SAP Java Cryptographic Toolkit must be deployed as a prerequisite. (Refer to note https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/821267 Question 28). By default following ports are used:
Implict FTPs 990 (Control) and 989 (Data)
Explicit FTPs 21 (Control) and 20 (Data)
Both use cases can be combined with active and passive mode.
    Advantages:
Direct transfer of files to/from third-party systems. It is not required to store the files in the XI server temporarily.
Built-In feature from XI File adapter
No extra effort in development and maintenance of Unix Script.
    Centralized Monitoring tool from XI
FTPS uses certificates and therefore can take advantage of "chains of trust" paradigm facilitated through Certificate Authorities. This paradigm makes it possible for two entities to establish a trust relationship without directly exchanging security information, which is important for some applications.
    Disadvantages:
Requires opening multiple ports forenabling SSLin the firewall. So there are multiple holes in the corporate firewall.
Not every FTP server supports FTPS and many that do, require a configuration change to activate the FTPS protocol extension.
Cryptographic toolkit should be installed in XI system though it is not very complex or expensive.
    Conclusion:
Though SFTP seems more secure as it works through one port, FTPS is easier to configure, monitor and maintain from XI point of view. However, the decision depends on many parameters like, cost/effort, flexibility in use, ease of maintenance, company security policy, failure possibilities etc.

  • Java API that implements the SSH, SFTP and Telnet protocols

    Hi,
I'm looking for a Java API that implements the SSH, SFTP and Telnet protocols. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Any Suggestions are really appreciated ?
    Thanks,

I believe SSH and telnet are used for interactive command line sessions, don't know how you want to use them in a program.

  • DW on Mac, CS3/CS5 using SFTP and/or FTP, need it secure!

    Folks:
DW CS3 or CS5 running on an quad-Intel iMac, 10.6.4, connecting to a host that uses identical credentials for SFTP and FTP.
It's important to be assured that the connection is in fact secure.
If you set  "connect using SFTP" will DW CS3 complain if the connection cannot be made securely?  Will DW then default to ordinary, insecure FTP?  If so, will DW inform you?   Is there an easy way of verifying the current connection mode, SFTP or FTP, within DW? (The FTP connection log does not say.)  Is there an easy way of doing it in MacOS or with a simple utility? (Can be done, but not conveniently, with L'il Snitch.)
    Is DW CS5 any different?
    TIA,
    hen3ry

    Folks:
    Problem solved.
It's clear that FTP and SFTP are fundamentally different protocols, but the DW protocol selection strongly implies similarity by offering SFTP as a minor option under the main selection of FTP.    I think it would be much clearer if SFTP were offered as a major option -- and then there would be an opportunity for offering SFTP options, too.
Here's a way of distinguishing which of these two is active:  Connecting to the target site using FTP results in a succession of text entries in the optionally viewable FTP log  -- no surprise.   I discovered that connecting to the same site with the same credentials and the addition of checking the "Use SFTP" option results in only line feeds --scrolling, but no visible text-- in the FTP log window.  I guess that's a reasonable though a bit indirect way of informing users that the link is active and secure.   (What does one do to diagnose problems with SFTP for hosting services that don't support FTP?  I don't know there are such services but it should be the great majority of them.)  Works in DW CS3 but I didn't check CS5.
Another option, untested but fairly obvious:  It's fairly easy these days to control host s/w (personal) firewalls -- even for low-tech users.  Establish and verify a link to your server using SFTP, then disable FTP; the link should fail.  And vice-versa.  This meets my specification of "simple" and should be  available with no extra expense and little trouble.
Brief Editorial:  From the recent reading I've done on FTP versus SFTP,  it is clear that the time to discontinue all support for FTP  is long past.

  • Sun 7210 Storage System - SFTP and Active Directory

    Good Afternoon
I have recently acquired a Sun 7210 Storage System which I have joined to my Microsoft Windows Active Directory domain. I have also specified the required LDAP Directory Service details under the Configuration tab. I am fairly sure these are correct as I can add a Directory user to the Users part of the device.
What I am having problems with is having my Windows A/D users connect to their shares via either HTTPS or SFTP. They are able to use the shares fine with CIFS and/or NFS.
The only user that can connect with SFTP and HTTPS it the local "root" user on the appliance.
Do people know if Directory users are able to use SFTP and HTTPS to access shares?
My current O/S on the 7210 is 2009.04.10.1.1,1-1.9.
Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

    Stephen,
I ran into this same issue yesterday with SFTP. Unfortunately the answer is that the storage system does not authenticate to AD for local logins (for which FTP, SFTP, HTTP qualify). I placed a support call yesterday to Sun on this matter and was given this information as well as the fact that there are no current plans to do so.
You have taken the functionality one step further by "tricking" the system into using AD as LDAP. I'm not sure it's truly compatible, but that was my next step as well. I was also going to experiment with creative id maps to see if I could make it work. Unfortunately, I've found that if you take the system too far from it's designed use, strange things can happen. I'm not sure that is a chance I want to take with home directories or other "secure" information.
Let me know how you fare and I'll do likewise.

So does anyone know how I can fix this problem so that I can update all the packages on my system?
I don't have any baloo packages installed right now.  I ran "pacman -Q | grep baloo" and it showed nothing.
I looked into it a little bit:
I'm using KDE, and some of their packages depend on baloo-widgets (which must be a recent change), so that is probably the root cause of my problem.
    baloo-widgets is at 4.14.0-1.
    baloo is at version 4.14.0-1.
baloo4-widgets is at version 4.14.0-1, provides replaces and conflicts with baloo-widgets,
libbaloo4 is at version 4.14.0-3, and conflicts with baloo<=4.14.0-1
baloo4 is at version 4.14.0-3, conflicts with baloo<=4.14.0-1, and is supposed to provide and replace baloo.
The three baloo4 packages were updated less than 24 hours ago by Andrea Scarpino (2014-09-13 07:35 UTC).  I'm not sure when they were created.
This thread from 11 hours ago seems to be related: baloo4 update and not more necessary.
I don't update my Arch system very often. It's possible that the last time I updated was before 2014-08-20, which was the last time the old baloo packages were updated.
I tried to install baloo4-widgets manually but got a weird error:

Removing a package from a repository doesn't seem like a very nice thing to do, but is that how things are done in the Arch world?  Does it need to be removed so that all the packages listing a dependency on "baloo" will use "baloo4" instead?  I would prefer if packages never got deleted so I could restore my system to any arbitrary point in the past.

  • KDE, ntpd and drag&drop issues

    Hi,
I use KDE and when I install ntpd (the problem disappears when I remove it) and I want to drag something (like windows), the dragging procedure starts after 5-6 seconds, so I have to hold the mouse in the position for 5-6 seconds. (it also happens when I try to select text).
Do you have encountered such a problem? Do you know how to fix the problem?

Okay, so when kde and ntp are installed, and ntpd is running, where are your processors spending their time?  Use htop, or whatever that process monitor thing in KDE is called to find out what, if anything is sucking up processor cycles.  Let us know.
Everything seems normal to me (htop).
Also, it happens on XFCE and Gnome, so it may be X11 issue.
Also, when I have ntp and timezone set to GMT+2, when I reboot my time sets to GMT+4 (not timezone, just time)...

  • ACL and smb

I want to do something relatively simple (or so I thought):
    - Have one volume shared (firewire drive)
    - SMB read-only for that volume for guests or a specific user
    - SMB complete access (read/write, etc) for that volume for a different specific user.
That's it, seriously. How can this get done with smb?

I would like to know how to do this as well. I've shared a folder on my MBP with read only permissions for everyone but I can still edit and delete files on the share from my Imac. I know I don't need smb for mac to mac file sharing but after 2 hours of googling and testing suggestions I couldn't get AFP to work.
I'll give a bit of detail about my AFP issue in case its an easier fix. Both machines have Appletalk enabled. On the MBP under system preferences, I have 2 folders, the public folder and a video folder. The public folder was shared by default but the video folder is the only thing I have added. It has afp and smb checked and read only attributes for everyone (including my username). When browsing with the imac to the MBP in finder I only see the public folder but if I connect with my username on the MBP I see my home folder, my root /, my time machine partition on my external drive and these are not shared. I don't see the video folder though. cmd-k smb://mycomputer/video gives the error the volume could not be mounted. So I tried cmd-k smb://mycomputer/video and volia I get a mounted video folder but I'm able to edit and delete files as guest or as me. Any help is greatly appreciated, and apologies if I'm hijacking this thread by posting my afp issue too.

  • KDE apps and kanji

    hi,
using XFCE actually but amarok is there too
I noticed i can't see kanji symbols in amarok, but ONLY kanji. Other unicode symbols are ok.
Katakana and hiragana are shown properly.
The same situation is with ID3 tags and filenames when displayed by amarok.
And yes both filename nad ID3 tags are 100% unicode.
In terminal and applications like thunar filenames are displayed properly even with kanji.
    My locale is using utf8.
Asked some of ppl i know and they had the same problem. Not only with amarok but other KDE apps too.
    So what could it be?
Is it that KDE applications use fonts that can't display kanji yet can display katakana and hiragana?
    Makes no sense to me...
    Hope anyone knows the solution
    thx

    Hey _saiko,
I'm running XFCE on arch64, and am living in 熊本 right now so I deal with kanji on a daily basis.  Both kanji and kana work for me in Amarok (and everywhere else, for that matter), here are the instructions that I followed step by step in order to achieve it.

I also had the following fonts installed by pacman:
    ttf-arphic-ukai
    ttf-arphic-uming
    ttf-dejavu
    ttf-fireflysung
    もしそうするとまだ漢字を見えなかったら、どうすればいい分かりません。
    many thanks
after i installed the fonts amarok displays kanji too!
the thing is... i didn't think fonts would be the problem since all my other applications successfully showed kanji with like.. default fonts
tho... those kanji appear in amarok as if they really are from some other font
actually... it's my font rendering that has problems...
only those kanji and only in amarok... they appear as if they aren't rendered properly...

  • What is the difference between SmartNet and SMBS service level

    Good Afternoon
I would like to ask if what is the difference between Cisco's SmartNet and Cisco's SMBS service level?
    Thank you

    Hi Rey,
SMARtnet covers traditional Cisco products (enterprise products ie. ISR routers), Small Business Support Center covers the small business line.
In the UC group of products, for some reason, Cisco considers the UC520, AP521, and WLC526 which are branded small business to be traditional Cisco products and are covered under SMARTnet. But, the UC540 and UC560 are covered by SBSC. One major difference in the UC arena is the support for CLI vs CCA config.
However, I noticed your post was in the Small Business - switches category. If you have a small business switch  those are covered by SBSC not TAC. SBSC will support the CLI and web gui config of the small business switches, where CLI is applicable to the model.
SBSC contracts tend to be for 3 year periods and can be significantly less expensive than SMARTnet agreements.
    Hope that helps.
    Best,
    David

  • Difference between afp and smb

I'm running OS X server 10.5.8. unlimited license with only file sharing enabled.
When a large number of users (more than 7 or 8) try to log on the server at the same time, the server goes AWOL. A few users get on and that's it. When I check the server preferences, file sharing has turned off by itself. When I try to restart it, it just turns off again. After waiting a while, I can turn it on again, or it'll turn on again by itself after a good long while.
This is in the setting of a computer lab. The users get on via afp. Would smb work better? What's the difference between the two?
I'll appreciate any help or suggestions on this.
    Hans

When I check the server preferences, file sharing has turned off by itself. When I try to restart it, it just turns off again
That's clearly not normal. What do the logs have to say?

AFP was designed by Apple and is the native file sharing protocol in Mac OS X.
SMB was designed by Microsoft and is the native file sharing protocol in Windows.
At one time Macs would use AFP, Windows systems would use SMB. That line is now blurred by the fact that Mac OS X can talk both AFP and SMB, and Windows machines can be persuaded to talk AFP.
There are some under the hood differences and in general your Mac clients should use AFP if possible. Whether SMB is more or less reliable in your case depends on why the server is having these issues in the first place - if it's a resource issue (i.e. not enough memory/cpu/etc.) then enabling SMB is likely to make things worse since the server now has an additional process to keep running.
