Kde start up is slow first time every day

I use kdm. The time waiting for the last icon on splash screen is about 15 seconds or more (may be 1 minutes). But it only happens on first time everyday. If I reboot the machine immediately, the time is about 5 seconds, not so fast, but OK. Heavy disk I/O when waiting for boot.
I have no daily cron tasks but default.

I find the reason: wdc disk works bad in low temperature condition. Is it a bug or "feature"?

It was working fine and I had no problems, and then one day I tried opening a window and it froze. When I tried quiting the program my whole window went black. The x to the close the window doesn't work. The only option I have in my tool bar is Firefox and nothing happens when I try to quit firefox. Every time I try to shut down my computer Firefox prevents it. I haven't updated Firefox yet, so it's an older program, but only by a month or two. What's going on and how do I fix it?
    </blockquote>
This is the first time it's ever happened. I downloaded the new operating system for Firefox but I can't install it until the Firefox currently running on my laptop quits, which it won't.

  • Yahoo is taking over and nothing is fixing it. oh and every time i start Firefox is acts like its starting up for the first time every time.

when i open Firefox its says something about checking add-ons or something for like 1sec then opens up with the main Firefox home page and the Firefox Google page.
that and the main issue is the whole yahoo thing, i HATE yahoo and its taking over my Firefox. now i have tried going into about:config and changing the keyword.URL back to Google but i get nothing and even if i find something that works as soon as i close it and reopen it its all reset.

    Hi,
If you have another Yahoo application installed, there may be a legitimate helper app that runs in the background and detects changes to Yahoo settings and reverts it. You can check for any such program in the Start menu and also in the OS Control Panel Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs). Please also check '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons''', click '''Extensions''' on the left, for any Yahoo add-ons and try disabling it or change it's settings.
Regarding the second issue: In Firefox, '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information''' > '''Open Containing Folder'''. This opens your current [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder & Files.] Exit Firefox and delete the files (not the folder) named '''extensions.'''*.

  • Powerbook g4 shut down after turning on for the first time every day

in recent 2 weeks, my g4 suddenly shut down after turning on 5min to several hours the 1st time everyday. after turning on 2nd time, a note show on the screen that "your computer clock is set to a date before March 24th, 2001, this may cause some applicaiton to behavior erratically" and recommed to reset the date and time. but the time is correct when i check the date&time. the battery is not out of power at that time. anyone has the same problem?

I'm not really familiar with System Optimizer, but I guess it is somewhat like Onyx or Cocktail, a system utility. You must be cleaning your caches too deeply. When you launch a document after this, an alert message appears. This relates to Security Update 2004-06-07 which was issued before 10.4 was released. So it existed in Panther, too. I would say if your utility gives you any control of what is cleaned in your caches, be choosy about it. See Dr. Smoke's FAQ here:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
If I might quote one passage:"However, after performing a System-level cache cleaning, you may again see these alerts for previously-approved applications as a System-level cache cleaning may remove the
    com.apple.LaunchServices*.csstore
files in your Computer > Mac OS X > Library > Caches folder. These files save, among other things, information indicating the applications you have previously approved for launch. Some cache-cleaning utilities retain these files to preserve your list of approved applications, while others remove them as they are saved in a System-related cache folder."
However, it would be best if you read the entire FAQ.

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but my macbook keeps ejecting the disc.  It started to install the first time and said it needed to restart to finish, restarted but ejected the disc.  It ejects every time now.  I've also installed the 10.5.8 combo update but that didn't help it.  I've tried restarting the macbook with the disc in, holding c, all that.  Why won't this work?!

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Macbook slows down at the same time every day.

I know this makes me sound crazy, but my Macbook (running Mac OS X) starts to get inexplicably sluggish at the same time every day – roughly between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Applications start temporarily freezing up and I get that beachball-looking thing, and I have to force quit applications because they won't quit normally. I have McAffee virus protection through my school and a full scan reveals nothing. I also have the latest security updates.
The applications I run on a given day are pretty typical: Chrome, Acrobat, Dropbox, Twitter desktop and Word. I never download any unauthorized software or shady files. No idea what it could be, but it is not just in my head. Any educated guesses?

Is the McAffee anti virus set to scan automaticaly around 4:30 -5:00?
.....you might want to open Activity Monitor and check what apps are running and check their CPU usage.......sounds like something is running in the background.....

  • What's the power of spending more time every day in your IT career ?

What's the power of spending more time every day in your IT career ?
When you do the research to find the factors of the successful people, you'll find that they ALWAYS spent a lot of time every day in their businesses.
The IT technologies change so fast and explode. The performance of IT people with 20 years experiences can be EASILY catched up by a IT people, maybe you, who has only 6 or 7 years or even less if you spend over 80 hours or even more every week on your job and on the latest technologies.
    The reasons are listed below:
    1. The out-of-date IT technologies is no use anymore. It's like the out-of-date IT books. The people with 20 years experience can't rely on his last experience any more.
    2. If you spend 80 hours every week, you'll absorb doubled the knowledge and experience than the people who spends only 40 hours every week. You may catch up with him who has 20 years experiences with your 10 years experiences. Not only this, most of your knowledge and experiences are newer and useful than his.
    3. Because you spend 80 hours, you have plenty of time to focus on your tasks. When the task comes in, you may finish your tasks many times faster than him and you may be the only person who still has the time to do any extra or urgent tasks. Because you have more time, you may prepare your next task to be ready to finish your next task even faster and you may absorb the latest IT technologies from a learner level to an expert level while other people is still doing his tasks. And due to your more spare time to learn the technologies all the time needed to do your task, you have much more knowledge needed to do your task and can finish your task much faster than others.
According to my experience, if the comparison of the knowledge the worker has is 1 to 5, the real hours needed to finish a task may be 1 to 10. In IT field, if you know how to do it, you need minutes, but if you don't know how to do it, you need months to do the error-try or starting to learn it and do it. Please notice that the knowledge can be used for many times and the 1 to 5 and 1 to 10 comparisons will repeat again and again. Without spending more time on getting more knowledge, the comparison of 1 to 10 is still happening.
    4. Like trying to save the money, most of his 40 hours will be spent on his tasks. He may have only 5 hours left to learn new IT technologies. If you still need to spend the same time to finish your tasks like him, you still will have 45 hours to learn new technologies. You grow 9 times, 5 hours to 45 hours, faster than him. If you keep working and learning the new IT technologies 80 hours every week, you'll find that you'll need much less than 35 hours like him, you may have 60 or even more hours every week to do more tasks to get more experiences and to learn more latest technologies.

    1) LabVIEW is a graphical based programming environment and
LabWindows/CVI is a C based programming environment.  Both can be used
for similar tasks.  Users familiar with C may prefer CVI.  LabVIEW is
typically easier to learn if you are unfamiliar with both.
     2)
The Run-Time Engine is a separate component that can be installed to
execute LabWindows/CVI programs and LabVIEW programs.  It is free of
charge for both LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI.
    3)
LabWindows/CVI does not convert any LabVIEW programs into C code.
LabVIEW programs are already compiled as you write them, so you won't
need to convert them to C to use them.  You should see similar
performance in similar LabVIEW and CVI code.

  • Render at a Specific Time Every Day

Is there a way to have a specific Final Cut Pro project to render automatically at a specific time every day?
I work at a CG house, and shots are updated at random intervals, but are always in a fixed, specific location. So by rendering out the project everyday we would always have an up to date complete edit. And by automating it it could be rendered off hours and be ready first thing in the morning for review.

Or page 548 of Volume III, if you're on Final Cut Pro 5 (FCStudio 1).
    'Main Menu/Final Cut Pro/User Preferences/General tab'
FCS2 may allow specific time of day, but FCS1 simply lets you set a period of time (while the program is open, but idle). So set it for 2 hours, leave FCP open when your last editor leaves the office.
This also offers several choices on which sequences you actually want to 'auto-render'.

  • Mouse/keyboard freezing machine around same time every day

Using a silver tower G5 here and around the same time every day for the past week I've had to power down the machine. The mouse and keyboard just freeze. About a week ago we did put this on a KVM to switch between this and a G4 connected to a SCSI scanner. The KVM has only PS/2 ports so we're using the Belkin Y PS/2 to USB adapters. The problem seemed to have started a day or so after starting to use the KVM but I'm not sure if this is related to the freezing problem. Here's what's in the Console around the time of the freeze:

Too many adapters. For troubleshooting purposes can you go with a mouse and keyboard connected as directly as possible?
Do you know what Adobe LM is? That seems to be buggering things up a little.
If you still have the errors after trying it with as few adapters as possible, try repairing your startup disk.

You can use lauchd to run the script.
Here's an example of an Automator App that I have scheduled to run at 7am daily:
You would save this as com.yourname.plist and put it the the Folder: ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ (then log out and back in, or reboot)

  • When I schedule my computer to sleep at a certain time every day, it goes to sleep at a completely different time.

I've been struggling with this problem for a bit.
I want the computer to sleep every night at 11pm, and wake every day at 9am.
I've set the times in the power saving preferences panel. No problem. However, at 19:42 every day, I'm told that the computer is scheduled to shut down, and do I REALLY want to do that? Of course I don't, so I cancel.
It wakes up pretty reliably at 9am, I'm pretty sure, but of course I have to put it to sleep myself.
I tried unchecking both items and quitting preferences, then coming back in, and the times are set back to 12:00AM. Then I set them to the times I want.
I THINK it might work for a little while after that, but then go back to this odd behaviour of trying to go to sleep at what seems to be an arbitrary time, though it's the SAME arbitrary time every day. :/
    Anyone seen this?

Its due to one of two reasons, you have mains supply spikes/blackouts or the power supply is faulty in the router. Because it's occurring at a regular timed intervals, I'd say it's more likely to be the former. You need to check whether something in the premises  is switching on at that time, examples would be electrical water heaters on timers, etc... And also confirm that the router mains cable is plugged firmly into the socket, as if it's loose it would make it more subseptable to such spikes/blackouts.

  • Why are Weekly Emergency Alerts now occurring multiple times every day?

Hi, up until recently, it seemed Weekly Emergency Alerts occurred Weekly, and Monthly occurred Monthly.Recently, it seems the Weekly EAS Alerts are occurring an average of 3 times every day, and I am wondering what has changed. It is getting annoying to experience an Alert every six hours or so, and makes little sense to me.Thank you in advance for any explanation or information.

I could be wrong, but I bet the EAS system (which Comcast has no control over) has taken a more aggressive stance on warnings after all the tornados and floods and fires the US is experiencing. I haven't seen an EAS since we had our last flood warning in Houston about 30 days ago.

When I open my MacBook Pro for the first time each day, I find condensation on the glass.  What can I do to prevent the condensation?

This thread and all the followups are hilarious, if it weren't such a serious problem. OP, you may want to add a bit more information on how this drippy screen problem occurs: where do you live, what are the weather conditions, what are you doing with the Mac when it occurs, etc.
Yes, extreme moisture, to the extent of causing visible condensation, is Very Bad News for any electronic device, and more so with one that isn't tropicalized like the Mac. Besides trying to avoid subjecting it to such extreme temperature changes, using some kind of desiccant to absorb close range moisture and avoidint its use until it dried out, I can suggest placing some kind of absorbent material between the display and the keyboard to prevent the moisture on the glass from finding its way into the computer. Like the protective poliethylene foam protector that came with the Mac when new. Or something like RadTech's ScreenSavrz: http://www.radtech.us/Products/NotebookScreenSavrz.aspx

  • Can only connect to enterprise wifi the first time each day, then does not reconnect and got the "Association Failed" error

To save battery, I leave my wifi off when the TP's screen is locked.  At home, my TP has no problem reconnecting to wifi after the screen is unlocked.  However, at work, which uses enterprise wifi, I can only connect the first time.  If I lock the screen and then unlock it (causing the wifi to turn off and on again) then the TP will not reconnect and I would get the "Association failed" error over and over again.  If I were to turn the TP off and on again, I would still get the same error.  Here's the strange part, if I come in work the next day, it would be able to connect to the wifi.  If I were to leave the wifi on all the time, it would not disconnect even if I lock the screen.  Now if I were to turn off the wifi and then turn it on again, the TP would not reconnect.  So it seems like the TP can only connect the first time each day....very strange...and frustrating.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

Scimmia is right.  But you AcousticBruce are still very wrong.  You claim there were no error messages.  Yet after much proding and denial you finally provide small portions of error messages which fully identify the problem and can be found in many other posts in these forums.  Yet still, you haven't actually provided full output - instead you paraphrased the output after a couple of "//" symbols.
If you don't give us the actual output we can't help - except in this case the error is so common we could very easily help.  So could the wiki page on wpa_supplicant if you had read it, as your problem is explictly listed there in a "NOTE" box.  But more importantly if you are reluctant to give us actual output we will not want to help you.
This issue would have been solved instantly if you would have provided the actual output instead of lying about it.
