KDE startup delay

Hey there,
ever since I installed KDE (plasma) on my notebook it has been really slow to start and doesn't show a progress bar, just fades in after 30 seconds or thereabout.
I looked at my journal and it presented this to me
Apr 27 18:44:58 HOSTNAME kglobalaccel5[647]: Registering key "Screensaver" for "ksmserver" : "Lock Session"
Apr 27 18:44:58 HOSTNAME kdeinit5[628]: powerdevil: ACTIVE SESSION PATH CHANGED: "/org/freedesktop/login1/session/c2"

Apr 27 18:45:23 HOSTNAME kdeinit5[628]: kcm_keyboard: id: 5 name: Virtual core XTEST keyboard used as: 3
It registers and unregisters like a million keys but that 24 seconds delay seems unnecesarry. Do you guys have an idea to what could cause this?
I attached the whole kde startup log here:

  • [RESOLVED] Script at KDE startup

I'm trying to run a script at KDE startup, I tried the following:
    user.desktop file in:
    $HOME/.config/autostart
    or a all.sh file in:
    $HOME/.kde4/Autostart
The former has my preference. I checked that these scripts and paths are present and enabled in KDE System Settings -> Startup and Shutdown but these files do not seem to be triggered by KDE. What could be the problem? If I double-click on the desktop file in a file explorer, then the script does get launched, so it does not seem the be a corrupt desktop file.
    My desktop file:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Exec=sh -c "${HOME}/%/start/all.sh"
    Hidden=false
    Name=User Startup
    Type=Application

You could try using the autostart kcm in systemsettings. By default, you should find that plasma-desktop (or netbook) and perhaps krunner are pre-enabled for autostarting. If you want to dig deeper, these files are being placed in .kde4/share/autostart/, not in the directories you've been trying. Try the GUI for easy set up. Or place your .desktop files in that directory and edit accordingly (using the already working .desktop files as a guide) to have it work.

  • No sound at KDE Startup

Until yesterday my sound worked fine, both at KDE startup and in KDE. After Syu'ing yesterday no sound at KDE startup. However, sound works to extent that aplay plays .wav files. Suspecting that the upgrade altered a config file, I checked the alsa config files and nothing had changed. I don't know where to look in KDE itself other than the sound section, which was also unchanged.
No big deal, upgrading is always a digital experiment. Just curious.
Any intel would be most appreciated.

Correct, arts is running and sound is working. After a bit more research, I realize that I have not stated my question precisely. It is a Systems Notifications issue. None of the System Notifications using sound work, not just the startup sound.
    Many thanks for your efforts.
he he .. ups, i was thinking that arts do not work and you have no sounds in kde --- can be my bad english or not so exact reading :-)
    Control>Sounds & Multimedia>System Notifications>KDE System Notifications
is the only thing to set notifications in kde, but it is a tricky one (the UI is not well made):
    - check if the volume is set ok: in the "Configure - System Notifiactions" check under the button "Player Settings..." if your volume is not muted (you do not need other player)
    - if you select a notification that has sound set ... if you click on the button to test sound, does it work? ... check if the files exist
else i dont know what to try to check why it is not working right ... arts works, so it's not a backend problem ... but a kde-one :-(

  • Startup delay with new HDD

I cracked my late 2006 iMac 24" open and replaced the stock drive with a Velociraptor. It's been working great, except for the fact that it has introduced a 30 second delay at system startup. This is a delay at the grey screen stage, before the apple logo appears. There doesn't seem to be any drive activity during this delay. I've repaired permissions, fsck'ed, and eliminated all peripherals except for the keyboard and mouse.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • [solved] lxdm, slim: startup delay

I'm trying to switch from lightdm to lxdm in order to work around the awesome keymap bug.
When I start lxdm using systemctl start lxdm.service I get a black screen and nothing happens for about 70 seconds. Then the lxdm greeter finally shows up, everything works fine and there are no errors or hints in the logs.
Any idea what could cause the delay? I tried lxdm-git from AUR, but no difference.
    Thanks in advance,

Okay, solved my own problem (another episode of strace-to-the-rescue)
The login managers in question seem to open a connection to '::1' (the IPv6 loopback) on startup. My ip6tables lacked a rule for accepting all loopback traffic, and as my default target for INPUT is DROP, the connection attempt was dropped and startup therefore delayed until the timeout for connection establishment is reached.
    Damn this was weird...

  • Help Network Startup delay

    Hi,
About a year ago we upgraded most of our computers from 10.3.9 to 10.4.x. Ever since then there is a 30 to 40 sec delay at startup before the Network initializes. This issue is only present in 10.4.x and it happened the 1st day we upgraded to 10.4.x. It does not happen on either of the two remaining 10.3.9 machines.
Basically, on the 10.3.9 machines the Network is available (I can surf the net and mount Network volumes) as soon as the Desktop finishes loading. On the 10.4.x machines, there is a 30 to 40 second delay between the time the Desktop finishes loading and when the Network is really available to surf or Mount Network Volumes.
I have opened the Network Preference and before our Network is really active (so I can Surf the Net) I have a valid IP Address and the Green Light is lit, indicating that the Compter thinks it has a valid connection, even though it doesn't. This has happened on every version of 10.4.x we have used, all the way up to and including 10.4.9.
We were using a 4 year old Router up to about 3 weeks ago, so I was hoping that upgrading the Router might help this situation, but it didn't. Even our Network with the new Router has the same problem.
Has anyone run into this before? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Kalagan

I am in the process of updating the Firmware on our Cisco Gigabit Switches to see if that will help.
    Just an update

  • BEx7 startup-delay of 10-20 secs - normal?

    Hi experts,
when the BEx-Analyzer 7 ist started we experience a delay of 10-20 seconds till the excel-windows appears and it is useable.
With BEx 3.5 we did not experience such delays.
Could you please let me know if that delay is "normal" or if there's any possibility to get rid of that waiting-period?
CPU and memory aren't stressed by the BEx-startup.
    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hi Marco,
10 seconds is quite normal for BEx 7.0. It uses more resources since it has more functionality than BEx 3.5.
Have you tried on a PC with at least 1 - 1.5 GB of RAM?
I have had customers that also took up to 10 - 15 seconds for Bex Analyzer to load on their 2.0 GHz PC with 512 Ram.
If you have a good spec'd PC, you may want to look at reinstalling your frontend. Refer to SNOTE 1040856 for the right steps to install the BEx 7.0 frontend.
    Regards,
    Gary.

  • POE startup delay

    I have a SG30010-MPP
Is there a way to delay applying POE to a port until after the switch is fully booted?
I have a situation where I am using the switch with DCHP capabilities, but I need the switch and DHCP server to be fully booted before power is applied to the port.  Since power is applied before the switch is fully booted, my devices configure with auto-IP and never see the DHCP server.  is there a way to control the boot sequence to make sure the DCHP server if fully functional before power gets applied to the ports?

  • Loginwindow startup delay

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue...
Is there a way to delay the login window from starting up before the network services are available? I know there is an option in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist to use a "StartupDelay" value, however this does not work for me for some reason.
So I got to thinking that I could create a LaunchAgent that would run on startup and maybe just sleep the system for 30 seconds at the blue screen before the login window loads, but instead of sleeping it just blows right on through to the login window. The rest of my launch agent works, but I can't seem to delay the startup no matter what I try.
Any ideas? /var/log/system.log isn't much help, shows that the launch agent is loading on startup.

Yes that's true, but on the other side of the coin if a user is trying to login and the directory services aren't yet bound, they will get a screen shake and assume the system isn't working. I know most people with a clue could just look at the login window and realize that it isn't yet ready (I enabled the DSStatus option of the loginwindow.plist), however that isn't the case most times. If I had just an extra 30 seconds before the login window launched, I would be good.
Strange thing is I know I had this working before using the StartupDelay -int parameter.
Is there any reason why a launchctl couldn't execute a script with a sleep command inside? Everything else in the script runs, just not sleep.

These kinds of delays can happen when a service is bound to a particular piece of hardware.
So as an example the [email protected] uses "BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-%i.device".  So when you enable [email protected], the part between the '@' and '.service' is what it will use in place of the '%i' of the BindsTo parameter.
This was a common problem when there was the change from the old kernel namespace used for network devices to the persistent udev naming scheme.  During installation (or any time one was in the live media), it would use dhcpcd@eth0, so it would make sense that enabling dhcpcd@eth0 would set you all up for a nice ethernet connection when you launch the system for the first time.  But then the 80-net-slot-names.rules udev file would change the interface name, making the BindsTo parameter time out after a while, since it would not be named something like enp2s0.
See if there are any failed units in the output of systemctl.  Of course you will have to do this after systemd claims to have "finished" booting.
thanks, will digg into that. i do have some renaming policy there.. cause i have eth0 shown in ifconfig for example
i remember i did something about it in the past, because i never got used with the new naming scheme.
    anyway systemctl --failed

To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.
and that fluidsynth is no issue. cause with this installed, it still does same. i have fluidynth uninstalled because my pulseadio doesnt work when that is enabled

  • [Solved] power management during kde startup not loading

    Hi,
after solving one problem here comes another. From on side it's onying, but on the other side I lesrn a lot about my system.
Well this time after the last kde update, I get the following message:
KDE Power Management System could not be initialized. The backend reported the following error:
No valid Power Management backend plugins are available. A new installation might solve this problem.
    Please check your system configuration.
So I went to:System Settings>>Power Management and the pane on the right is greyed out and there is a message:
Power Management configuration module could not be loaded. The Power Management Service appears not to be running.
This can be solved by starting or scheduling it inside "Startup and Shutdown"
System Settings>>Startup and Shutdown>>Service Manager, shows that Power management is running.
If I try to start upower manually I get the following message:
    /usr/lib/upower/upowerd
    (upowerd:30849): UPower-WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.freedesktop.UPower: Connection ":1.77"
is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.UPower" due to security policies in the configuration file
(upowerd:30849): UPower-WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
    I found this post: http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.p … KDE-4-11-1
where it states tha this was a bug in some previous kde releases.
Well apparently it happened again here.
I read somewhere that it could be because the policykit rules weren't update. I tried to understand policykit conf files but for no avail. I'm twice lefthanded on that matter.
    Any takers?
    PS.: Checking with journalctl -r I found that upowerd was masked, so I did;
    #systemctl unmask upower.service
    than I enabled it;
    #systemctl enable upower.service
    and if you want to start it right away than;
    #systemctl start upower.service
    Well that's it.

    Thanks for your answers!
arojas wrote:is the upower daemon running?
Not sure about that. I installed upower but I don't know how to configure it or if any configuration is needed. If I understand official documentation correctly, upower daemon should be started automatically if some application needs it.

I have full KDE installation (# pacman -S kde-meta) so problem should be in my Arch installation, no in KDE itself. I have only installed Arch, Xorg, proprietary Nvidia drivers and KDE so far, so there is only small chance I break or messed up something - it's more likely something I didn't install yet or didn't know how to configure.

  • Is there an equivalent in Lion to the PC configuration system where you can choose which programs are startups , delayed or manual

Help, I want to be able to choose which programs I wan tot run at start up because after 6 months of usage it takes about 2plus minutes for a cold system to start up and 5 seconds to shut down. I wan tot speed up the startup and I think I have to many programs runnning at startup. On my PC I used to control that from sys config,is there an equivalent in Lion.

Go to System Preferences/System/Users & Groups. Click on Login Items and add or delete the apps as you choose.

  • 4900M WS-X4908-10G-RJ45 Port Startup Delay

    Hi all,
We have recently purchased 2 x 4900M switches with the following configuration:
    2 x X2-10GB-SR installed in port te1/1, 1/2 (optical)
    1 x 20 x 1GB RJ45 installed in the top left of chasis ge2/1 - 2/20
    1 x WS-X4908-10G-RJ45 8 port 1/2 card in the top right of chassis te3/1 - 3/8
We have te1/1 connecting the 2 switches, and various vlan's and connections on the 1GB RJ45's with no problems.
However, we have a number of 10Gbps BaseT connections te3/1 - te3/5 which are causing us issues. On a reload of the switch or removal / re-install of the cable it can take anywhere up to an hour for the port to become active again. So when we reload the switch, we may get a connection come up after say 3 mins, but the port next to it may not come up for 15-60 min. The cabling is all the same (CAT6 and has been tested/verified) and all connections go to Broadcom 10Gb cards in Dell 820 servers running vmware. We have the following set on the ports:
    switchport mode access
    spanning-tree portfast
No speed or duplex can be set on these ports - these options are not available in the config.
Is this normal? Is there something I am missing in config for these ports? By the way, once a link is finally established, it will hold the link solid with no problems, but this is a problem for us, we can't have a reboot take an undetermined amount of time for the link to come back.
    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Shane

I just upgraded to 15.1.2 SG2 that was released in Sept 2013 and am having this same issue with upgrade from 12.2.54.  Took 2 of my ESX ports on the WS-X4908-10G-RJ45 a range of 11 min and 28 min to come up.
I applied the commands to set the 10G to the ports, but on reboots it seemed to make little difference for delay coming up:

    hw-module module 2 port-group 1 select tengigabitethernet
    hw-module module 2 port-group 2 select tengigabitethernet
    hw-module module 2 port-group 3 select tengigabitethernet
    hw-module module 2 port-group 4 select tengigabitethernet
    exit
I watched the ports in "sh hw-module module 2 port-group" and they would bounce individual ports around from Active to Inactive:

I don't see anything out of the ordinary in there.  Is anyone else seeing this issue?  After the timeout everything works fine so this isn't a terrible issue but I'm learning Arch and am just trying to understand what is happening behind the scenes.

Sorry to necro this but I solved this eventually.  Disabling UPNP port forwarding for transmission fixed this issue.
