Which KDE is it?  If it is KDEMod, then the answer is that there was a compatibility issue with the recent openssl update and qt that caused kdm to crash.  Unfortunately, the kdemod devs were traveling when the openssl update hit the repos.  As of Sunday morning, the devs placed the compatible version of qt up in the kdemod repos.  I tried it and now kdm is back up and running.

  • KDE update to 4.10.1 broken

Has anyone encountered any problems with recent KDE update? I barely started my desktop and almost all widgets are unavailable. Reinstalling packages did not help/
http://pho.to/1jHMN this is how my desktop looks now.
    Any clues?

I am experiencing some weird stuff too. Firstly, i have updated the system (pacman -Syu) but when i reboot it my KDE desktop was unfunctional. Then i did another pacman -Syu (about 1 hour later) and kdelibs package was pulled in wich at least made my desktop functional. But, all my panels disappeared. Really weird.

  • Black screen after KDE update (14.12.1)

A few errors or warning in .xsession.errors (don't know if they're relevant):
plasma-desktop(865)/libplasma Plasma::isPluginVersionCompatible: unversioned plugin detected, may result in instability
plasma-desktop(864): Communication problem with "plasma-desktop" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" "
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
Renaming $HOME/.kde4 and deleting /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER didn't solve anything.
I can launch applications with Alt-F2, but the screen remains black.
    Thanks for your help.

  • 10.4.11 update troubles

OK, so I updated to 10.4.11. 1st thing that happens is Safari doesn't work anymore--spontaneously quits immediately after opening. Now I can't even install software I've downloaded to try to solve this problem, for example the Combo update I got from here and Pacifist to extract Safari from it. I get this error message-disk images failed to mount-device not configured.
I'm not a troubleshooting wizard so what next?

You are not alone. Here are some suggestions from MacFixIt:
+We've received several reports from Tiger users that after updating to 10.4.11, Safari 3 (which is now included "for real" and no longer an optional beta add-on) crashes constantly. But in every case, so far, third-party add-ons have been present. It is perfectly believable that there is some serious crashing bug in Safari 3 on Tiger, but before testing, please do make sure you are not using anything that might cause an incompatibility.+
    +For example, reader James wrote:+
+After installing the latest 10.4.11 update (and security updates), I found a new bug in Safari 3. Every single time I click the red close box in the last open window within Safari, Safari will crash. It happens every single time. I have no third party software added to Safari at all. This is very troubling.+
+But then it turned out that third-party software was to blame. James was using an InputManager to inject modified functionality into Safari (in this case, it was Speed Download). As we have warned in the past, Input Managers are tricky beasts. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. (This loophole is, to some extent, tightened in Leopard - though it does not seem to be completely closed. Stay tuned for more on that, as we learn more.) If you've installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again. As James' case shows, you can quite innocently, honestly, and reasonably believe you have "no third-party software added to Safari", and be wrong. InputManagers is a key place to suspect that such software may reside. (James' persistence in tracking this down is really commendable.)+
    +Similarly, another reader writes:+
+I updated my G4 PowerBook 1.33ghz to OS X v10.4.11, everything seems well after restart, but the new Safari cannot even be launched, once click in the Dock, the "unexpected quit" message will pop out. I have repair permission, use Single User mode with no avail, still quit unexpectedly. I am not sure what went wrong, I have peformed the pre and post OS update procedures (repair permission, unplug everything etc). The only "possible culprit" is that I have installed an additional "hack" to Safari, an additional Tab button being added to Safari's Address Bar. Now I am trying to see if I can uninstall it.+
+Yes! Uninstall it, log out and in, and then let's see how we go. There might still be a crash, but let's eliminate anything that might be unfairly sideswiping Safari first, so we can track it down more reasonably.+
    +Again, reader Rich says:+
+I've just upgraded (using the combo updater) from OSX 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. The upgraded Safari 3 now crashes on launch. I'd be interested if others are having this problem. Note that I've never encountered a serious problem with an OSX update until now. I'm using a PowerMac G5 dual 2 GHZ with 3.5 GB of memory.+
+So I asked for the crash log, which Rich very obligingly sent along, and the very first thing I observed is that he's using several "haxies" - Mighty Mouse, LCC Scroll Enhancer, and the Application Enhancer framework. (These are visible in /Library/Application Enhancers.) So my initial recommendation was, let's at least try uninstalling these and then try again. Again, it might be a red herring, but with these things present, rational testing is made much more difficult, and it can't hurt to eliminate them temporarily as part of the investigation procedure.+

  • [SOLVED] Plasma Desktop segfaults after recent KDE update to ver. 4.6

Today after upgrading some amount of packages, including the new KDE 4.6, my Plasma Desktop "segfaults" every single time I login into my account. I tried to send some information regarding this issue using KDE's internal reporting system, but unfortunately it tells me, that those information are irrelevant. Does anyone experience "segfaulting" of the Plasma Desktop after recent KDE upgrade? I'm looking for some help on how to solve this issue, as for the moment my Arch is dead...

Actually, it is KDE that is giving you trouble, not the OS . When you reach the kdm login screen, don't login. Instead, switch to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1, for example) and login from there. Then, you can see a list with all your plasmoids with
    plasmapkg -l
If you find the culprit plasmoid, and it is a plasmoid downloaded outside Arch's repos (from kde-look.org, for example), remove it with
    plasmapkg -r plasmoid_name
If the plasmoid is installed as a package, it is probably better to uninstall/upgrade it using pacman.
panosk wrote:do you use some extra plasmoid? if so, you need to rebuild them.
    Hi all,
I have the same problem. I tried using tty, but I got  "cannot access to X server". Than I tried
Alt+F2 to run Terminal, I used
    plasmapkg -l
in order to see the list of all the plasmoids, but I couldn't find the "culprit" plasmoid. I don't know if I am doing it right. Here the list of my plasmapkg:
    [encho@x~]$ plasmapkg -l
plasmapkg(1986)/libplasma Plasma::PackageStructurePrivate::createPackageMetadata: No metadata file in the package, expected it at: "/home/encho//metadata.desktop"

  • Software Update troubles

I have two software updates that I'm having issues with. I'm running Leopard 10.5.2 on a 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro.
Whenever I attempt to install a Keyboard Firmware Update, version 1.0, it tells me: A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.
I have tried this on several different connections, wired and wireless, and continue to be unable to install.
I also am having trouble with the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware update, version 1.5. I have "successfully" installed this update about 4 times, yet the update continues to appear in my update box.

See if downloading it directly works:

If you look at the list of software updates in the Systems Preferences you can see if it actually installed or not. If it is listed it installed. Otherwise download it from the same page previously referenced and see what happens.
Installing a firmware update is not the same as installing a regular update. Also installing the EFI firmware update is even more different.
Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter.
If you find that these updates are indeed installed, then check your startup folder in Users in
System Preferences and remove it from the list.

  • Software Update Trouble

I've been having a lot of troubles with my MacBook and now it seems like my software update doesn't work. Its stuck on about 70% and its not moving at all. My internet connection is fine and it worked a while ago. Here is how it looks like
    http://img195.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1zgk.png

Cancel your update process and quit Software Update. Then try the following:
    Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
    Delete the following files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist
    "xxx" is a number.
    /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)
    Now, do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now restart Software Update and see if it works properly.

  • Freenx bombs after KDE update

    Howdy folks,
This morning freenx was fine on my Arch box - I could work with it just fine from a XP client. I ran pacman update and there was a kde upgrade along with a few other packages.
After the update, I can connect from XP client and OSX client but I get a black screen with an "X" flashing between mouse movements. It almost looks like some kind of xscreensaver x-org screensaver but xscreensaver it not running. As long as the mouse is moving I have my desktop, but click a button or stop the mouse and I get the funky "X" on a black screen.
    Any ideas?
    -Shawn

Looking at this some more and still baffled. I don't think it was caused by a KDE package, it looks more like an xorg thing. Here is the upgrade list:

  • Kde update 4.9 & problems with auto-grouping windows

Since upgrading kde to the latest version (4.9), I'm having problems getting the window manager to automatically group windows as it used to. It should group windows of okular, for example, by default, but no matter what I do, I can't get this to happen.
I've tried modifying (basically reasserting) the settings for okular in the "windows rules" settings (under "more actions > window manager settings". I've also tried doing this via the new option "more actions > special application settings" which creates a second entry in the list of window rules. I basically have "autogroup with identical" set to "force" "yes" which seemed to do the trick before but no longer seems to have any effect. It is still enforcing placement and geometry for okular windows so it can't be that it isn't recognising the windows as ones to which the settings apply. It seems to be specific to the grouping stuff.
Does anybody have any suggestions? The config seems to have changed a bit and I'm thinking I must have missed some new setting somewhere but I just seem to keep going in circles.

Unfortunately, I am using Oxygen window decorations already.
I do have the "Attach as tab to" option but it is a pain to have to group every window manually.
I've discovered that auto-grouping does work for windows opened on the same virtual desktop but if I open a new okular window from konsole, say, I get a new window on that desktop rather than having it end up attached as a new tab to an existing window on another desktop. I can work around it by having all okular windows start on a standard desktop but this is a pain as I didn't want okular to behave this way.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. I found a lot of my window behaviour got messed up by this update. Mostly it's just a question of resetting things but this one has me stumped.

  • IOS 4.3.5 update trouble

I have an iPhone 3GS its current software version is 4.1.  My iTunes says there is an update to software version 4.3.5.  When I click on the update button iTunes pops up a window stating that the iTunes software is up to date and does not update the iPhone.  Is my 3GS too old for the update to 4.3.5?  I have not reinstalled iTunes and I am still using an iMAC G5, pre iSight camera.
    Thanks
    Blaster

Ok after reading through related discussions, I found out that the 3GS should be updated to 4.3.5 according to this thread.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/15982138#15982138  So my trouble is that iTunes will not update my 3GS to 4.3.5?  I will ask this same question in the iTunes discussions.
      Thanks

  • Kalgebra won't start after a KDE update

    [archie@localhost ~]$ kalgebra
kalgebra: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libkhtml.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZN6Phonon11VideoPlayer5eventEP6QEvent
Used to work just fine. haven't launch the program in a long time and now I'm getting this. Must have been an update that happened in the last 2 months.

  • IPhoto '11 update trouble - "quit unexpectedly"

    Hey Hey!
    On a MacPro running 10.6.8, I just updated to iLife '11 (9.1.5).
Upon opening iPhoto '11, after a minute or so of the spinning bar (not the pinwheel, but hte white/gray clock-hands-like thing) I get "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto". I click Upgrade. It indicates "Examining iPhoto Library" for 10 seconds. Then it gives a progress bar and "Upgrading iPhoto database". After a few minutes, when the progress bar is near finished, that subwindow disappears, then the program window disappears and a "Problem Report for iPhoto" "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" window pops up.
I've tried four or five times. Once or twice among those times I also then got a window saying that my backup was full and that my Mac had been running without power (I've got it on a UPS that's connected via USB).
I've disabled Time Machine, set my desktops to individual, OS included photos that aren't from my iPhoto library, and disabled my screen saver, that would normally be set to draw from iPhoto.
Nothing's worked. I keep getting this "quit unexpectedly". I fear for my 110GB iPhoto library!
    Help?
    Thanks,
    Archmart

    Hey Hey!
Sorry to not post this sooner. It eventually turned out to be a dying hard drive. Strange, but true. The same drive, which I use for iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie content, was doing just fine with my iTunes library for weeks while this trouble with iPhoto went on. Eventually, it started failing to mount and so a replacement and then a restore from Time Machine did the trick. Not sure if that's any help.
    Thanks,

  • Mac OS 10.8.5 update trouble

    Hi,
I'm new here and I would be grateful to anyone able to help me. Today I have made the Mac OS 10.8.5 update on my 2010 Macbookpro (Apple care ending on November 10). It has downloaded the update from the application center and has started to install it. All went fine. However it has been half an hour now that the screen is blocked at "less than a minute before restart". I have all the right to suspect something is wrong.
So what to do? Wait one or two hours? Restart? I'm not very hot on restarting as it is a Mac OS update.
Of course, I don't have time machine and haven't saved my system (reason why is: never any problem with updates). I'm mac since 1996 and do handle the machines pretty well but this is the first time something si liar happens and I'm not quite sure what to do.
    Any advice to give me?
    Thanks in advance!

Call AppleCare. That is the best suggestion I can make.
    Best.
